Identification Of Drought-Tolerant Local Cowpea Varieties Of Southwest Maluku (Indonesia), Ritha Lusian Karuwal, Suharsono Suharsono, Aris Tjahjoleksono, Novriyandi Hanif
Makara Journal of Science
Cowpeas grown in Southwest Maluku have local potential due to their diversity and ability to adapt to drought stress conditions that otherwise cause low productivity. The purpose of this study was to identify of local cowpea varieties of Southwest Maluku that show tolerance to drought. The experimental samples were seven local varieties and threereference cultivars. The drought stress treatment was altered watering periods, i.e., every two (P0) and ten days (P1) from growth to harvest. The results of this research showed that a ten-day watering period significantly decreased plant height, number of leaves, number of root nodules, root and shoot …

The Influence Of Nutrient (N And P) Enrichment And Ratios On Phytoplankton Abundance In Keunekai Waters, Wehisland, Indonesia, Ulung Jantama Wisha, Koko Ondara, Ilham Ilham
Makara Journal of Science
The Keunekai waters around Weh Island, Indonesia, have become a prone coastal area because of degradation from climate anomalies and anthropogenic pressure. The high level of coral mortality caused by mass bleaching and fish bombing several years ago may have led to the deterioration of the water conditions and the disruption of the biogeo-chemical cycle, resulting in potential nutrient enrichment and algae blooms (eutrophication). This study aimed to de-termine the influence of nutrient ratios on phytoplankton abundance and monitor the existing waterconditions aroundKeunekai. Spectrophotometry analysis was used to determine the concentrations of the nutrients, and the Sedgewick-Rafter counting method was …

Comparison Of Switched Reluctance Motor And Double Stator Switched Reluctance Motor, Nirdesh Neupane
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is concerned with the design and analysis of Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) and its improved structure Double Stator Switched Reluctance Motor (DSSRM). Three configurations of SRM viz. Inner Stator, Outer stator and Double Stator are designed and simulated in ANSYS Maxwell Suite. Design parameters are chosen by aiming optimum performance of motor after literature review and analytical study of the motor. SRM is not a line start machine, so power converter circuit is required to excite the motor. Without proper switching of current, desired torque is not obtained in SRM. The converter circuit and switching unit is built …

Singing Their Stories: A Musical Narrative Of Teaching And Testing, Desi Richter
Singing Their Stories: A Musical Narrative Of Teaching And Testing, Desi Richter
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This musical, arts-based educational research describes the lived experiences of four K-12 New Orleans educators who believe that end-of-year standardized tests hinder their ability to teach in ways they believe are best. Using songwriting as a form of data elicitation and narrative restorying, this study documents the lived experiences of teachers who have experienced test-related cognitive dissonance. While curricular narrowing and other test-related practices have been studied in many contexts, the perspectives of New Orleans teachers are barely documented. Thus, this study fills a content gap in the testing literature. Musically restorying the data contributes to the accountability literature in …
A Sociopolitical View Of Mental Health: An Exploration Of The Lived Experiences Of Policymakers Regarding Their Perspectives Surrounding Mental Health Policy Construction, Katie C. Fetzer
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
A substantial gap exists between those who are considered experts on mental health (e.g., academics, mental health professionals) and those in charge of constructing mental health policies (e.g., legislators, Senators). This gap is in areas of both knowledge and professional relations. Mental health professionals are not adequately trained to engage in policy advocacy and reform efforts and have little to no policy advocacy training (Smith, Reynolds, & Rovnak, 2009). Policymakers lack necessary knowledge related to mental health for effective mental health policy construction (Corrigan, Druss, & Perlick, 2014; Lee, Smith, & Henry, 2013). As a result of this gap, mental …

An Exploration Into Teachers' Perceptions Of School Leaders' Emotional Intelligence, Lindsey E. Caillouet
An Exploration Into Teachers' Perceptions Of School Leaders' Emotional Intelligence, Lindsey E. Caillouet
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Although the benefits of school leader emotional intelligence are well-known, leadership preparation programs lack training in emotional intelligence, thus calling for reform (Darling-Hammond, LaPointe, Meyerson, Orr, & Cohen, 2007; Johnson, Aiken, & Steggerada, 2005; Guerra & Pazet, 2016; Mills, 2009; Wallace, 2010). Emotional intelligence competencies, such as empathy, self-awareness and motivation, are closely aligned with components of transformational leadership theory, including idealized influence, individualized consideration, and inspirational motivation (Kumar, 2014). Highlighting these connections can provide guidance in identifying significant components of emotional intelligence. This study examined teachers’ perceptions of school leaders’ emotional intelligence in order to identify critical components of …
Promoting Positive Student Development: A Qualitative Case Study Of School-Wide Social And Emotional Learning In An Elementary School, Kathleen Theodore
Promoting Positive Student Development: A Qualitative Case Study Of School-Wide Social And Emotional Learning In An Elementary School, Kathleen Theodore
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Many schools have adopted social and emotional learning programs, but few schools have achieved significant impacts on student outcomes because of challenges with implementation quality. Although there is guidance on selecting evidence-based social and emotional learning programs for classroom use, schools need guidance on how best to integrate social and emotional learning in context. This study examines how an elementary school integrated school-wide social and emotional learning into its daily practices, using a qualitative single case study grounded in Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. The study, which was conducted during an eight-week period, identifies promising practices that could be beneficial for …

The Effectiveness Of Government Mandated Disclosure Reform, Sakshi Raj
The Effectiveness Of Government Mandated Disclosure Reform, Sakshi Raj
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The higher the level of information asymmetry between a firm and its investors, the higher is the firm’s reluctance to raise money externally, potentially leading to investment distortions. An improved disclosure system reduces information asymmetry and therefore, lessens the adverse selection effects of external financing, thereby moderating investment inefficiencies. In this paper, we examine the impact of potentially improved transparency stemming from stricter disclosure requirements (Clause 49) on financing and investment decisions of Indian firms. The results show that reliance of Indian firms on internal financing in the pre-reform period gives way to greater use of external financing …

In Response To Totalitarianism: The Hawkish Cold War Foreign Diplomacy Of The Europeans Kissinger And Brzezinski During American Détente, D'Otta M. Sniezak
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Despite historians describing the 1970s as a time of détente, both National Security Advisors that dominated America’s foreign policy pursued harsh stances against the Soviet Union. Henry Kissinger and Zbigniew Brzezinski sabotaged peace talks in order help the United States keep its edge against the other world superpower. Most historians point to the similarities between these two men, but what is most often left out of the narrative is that both men witnessed persecution at the hands of totalitarian governments: Kissinger by the Nazis and Brzezinski by both the Nazis and the Soviets. This influence is strong in their first …
“Your Love Is Too Thick”: An Analysis Of Black Motherhood In Slave Narratives, Neo-Slave Narratives, And Our Contemporary Moment, Kaitlyn M. Spong
“Your Love Is Too Thick”: An Analysis Of Black Motherhood In Slave Narratives, Neo-Slave Narratives, And Our Contemporary Moment, Kaitlyn M. Spong
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, Kait Spong examines alternative practices of mothering that are strategic nature, heavily analyzing Patricia Hill Collins’ concepts of “othermothering” and “preservative love” as applied to Toni Morrison’s 1987 novel, Beloved and Harriet Jacob’s 1861 slave narrative, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Using literary analysis as a vehicle, Spong then applies these West African notions of motherhood to a modern context by evaluating contemporary social movements such as Black Lives Matter where black mothers have played a prominent role in making public statements against systemic issues such as police brutality, heightened surveillance, and the …

Prenatal Risk For Autism Spectrum Disorder (Asd): Fetal Cortisol Exposure Predicts Child Asd Symptoms, Sheena Ram, Mariann A. Howland, Curt A. Sandman, Elyssia Poggi Davis, Laura M. Glynn
Psychology Faculty Articles and Research
The etiology of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is multifactorial, complex, and likely involves interactions among genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. With respect to environmental influences, a growing literature implicates intrauterine experiences in the origin of this pervasive developmental disorder. In this prospective longitudinal study, we examined the hypothesis that fetal exposure to maternal cortisol may confer ASD risk. In addition, because ASD is four times more prevalent in males than in females, and because sexually dimorphic responses to intrauterine experiences are commonly observed, we examined whether or not any associations differ by fetal sex. Maternal plasma cortisol was measured at …

This commentary delivers a practical perspective on the current state of subjective training load (TL) monitoring, and in particular sessional ratings of perceived exertion, for performance enhancement and injury prevention. Subjective measures may be able to reflect mental fatigue, effort, stress, and motivation. These factors appear to be important moderators of the relationship TL has with performance and injury, and they also seem to differ between open and closed skill sports. As such, mental factors may affect the interaction between TL, performance, and injury in different sports. Further, modeling these interactions may be limited due to the assumption that an …

Techniques For Checking As-Worn Alignment Of Eyewear With Display Optics Or Progressive Prescription Lenses, Ozan Cakmakci, John Stuart Fitch, Vladimir Krneta, David Hoffman
Defensive Publications Series
Fitting eyewear with display optics to a user’s head can be problematic because lenses of the eyewear are typically not on hand during product development. This can cause problems with alignment of eyeboxes of the lenses when the user wears the eyewear with finished display optics. Generally, the eyebox of a lens or display optic is a volume within the lens such that parameters of image quality criteria is met. For example, if the eyeboxes of the lenses do not align correctly with the user’s eyes, then the eyewear does not fit or align with the user’s head. Incorrect alignment …

When Students Drive Design: Creating A Family Study Room For Students Who Are Parents, Jennifer F. Paustenbaugh, C. Jeffrey Belliston
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The paper focuses on a user-centered design project in the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University (BYU). BYU students who are parents comprise about 25% of the student population. University leaders have a goal for students to graduate in fewer semesters. Some students—especially females—drop out of school upon becoming a parent. Other students delay graduation by taking fewer classes in order to attend to their parental duties. Student parents who use the library frequently did not feel welcome when accompanied by their children. Oftentimes the parents elected not to use the library as the study resource it was …

User experience (UX) refers to users' emotions, experiences and behavior when using products, systems and services. Traditionally, UX is applied to assess changes with websites and operating systems, but libraries have started applying the same usability principles to their physical spaces and services. NMC´s Horizon Report 2017 estimates that valuing the user experience is on-trend the coming years. Used as a set of tools in library development, UX methods enables us to understand and improve library users' experiences. Mixing qualitative and quantitative techniques to obtain deeper insights into user needs: A key point being to discover needs users themselves are …
Roboter Ante Portas? About The Deployment Of A Humanoid Robot Into A Library, Benjamin Stahl, Janett Mohnke, Frank Seeliger
Roboter Ante Portas? About The Deployment Of A Humanoid Robot Into A Library, Benjamin Stahl, Janett Mohnke, Frank Seeliger
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
Robots are common practice in industrial production, where they already control production processes. In many hospitals they support medical staff during complicated operations. There are robots in some libraries, that support the time-consuming process of inventory. However, in general libraries have been a rather unusual place for introducing robot applications so far and especially humanoid robots are still more than unusual in public nowadays. Can humanoid robots be useful in daily life? What makes sense and what is just technical gimmick? For almost two years, the Technical University of Applied Sciences in Wildau has owned two so called Pepper robots1. …

This also includes R&D in the creative and performing arts. OsloMet shall further “stimulate students and staff to participate in public debates” and “develop activities at an institutional level in order to strengthen engagement, unity and common identity among students and staff” (Strategy 2024).How can the University Library help achieve these goals? …
Selecting And Implementing Leading Edge Technology Services: Library As Partner In The Innovation Ecosystem, Patrick Tod Colegrove
Selecting And Implementing Leading Edge Technology Services: Library As Partner In The Innovation Ecosystem, Patrick Tod Colegrove
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
The practice of libraries – and with it, librarianship – continues to evolve. New technology and services are fundamental to library support of innovation and creativity; deciding which technologies and/or services to implement can be less clear. The overlap of design thinking with best practices of emerging technology and libraries offers a practical approach: real-world examples of success and failure reveal the outlines of an emerging framework for improved selection and implementation of leading-edge technology in the library environment. Novel services and technologies offered by a library that is part makerspace, part accelerator, and full partner in the innovation ecosystem …

Studio 55: Library Makerspace With A Difference, Gillian Barthorpe, Hans Tommy
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
AUT Library launched Studio 55, the Library Makerspace in 2017, the first in a New Zealand university library. While the concept of a library makerspace is not unique our approach has been a little different. We have adopted a more ‘low-tech’ approach in that we don’t have a 3D printer and other more ‘hi-tech’ equipment that is fairly standard in most makerspaces. It is a highly visible space that is open to all to ‘think, make, do’ and share skills, ideas and work together across disciplines. It is designed to engage the community in new ways of working and learning …
