Sensors And Smart Food Packaging For Supply Chains: Bridging Expiration Dates And Actual Perishability, Muhammad Umar Azam, Jolina Rodrigues, Mohamed Hamid Salim, Sarath Haridas Kaniyamparambil, Khalid Askar, Imane Belyamani, Blaise L. Tardy, Nouha Alcheikh

All Works

The food supply chain is undergoing critical changes to minimize environmental hazards, such as those associated with packaging, and reduce food waste and loss. One of the critical components of the latter is associated with the high variance in the perishability of individual foodstuffs. Herein, we review the state of the art in smart sensor systems and emphasize the critical role they could play in addressing the mismatch between “batch” based expiry dates and individual food products’ time-dependent responses to spoilage. Following a brief overview of food shelf life and associated legislation, a subsequent section summarizes the development of sensors …

Dipl 3850/Core 3850 Church, State, And Politics In Latin America, Benjamin Goldfrank Ph.D.

Diplomacy Syllabi

This course has two central objectives: to provide students with an understanding of the evolving role of religion in Latin American politics, with a primary emphasis on the role of Catholicism and the Catholic Church from the period of the Second Vatican Council until the present; and to provide students an opportunity to reflect on the normative questions of how religious beliefs and religious institutions should affect politics and of how different political systems and state policies should affect the practice of religion. Major themes, examined through both Catholic and non-Catholic perspectives, include the institutional relationship between the Catholic Church …

Sacred Loss And Moral Authority: Religious Leadership And Identity Reconstruction In Post-Conflict Societies, Kimberly C. Kennedy Oct 2026

Sacred Loss And Moral Authority: Religious Leadership And Identity Reconstruction In Post-Conflict Societies, Kimberly C. Kennedy

Interdisciplinary Journal of Leadership Studies

This paper examines how religious leaders shape narratives of identity formation and reconciliation in post-civil conflict societies where violence, defeat, or political transition produces moral injury and crises of meaning. By drawing on themes of justice, forgiveness, and accountability, religious leadership can wield moral authority to influence public perception, guide healing processes, and support transitions from active conflict to more stable forms of peace. The paper explores how religious leaders reframe narratives of defeat, particularly in cases where a community’s cause was endowed with sacred meaning, creating a crisis of faith. It argues that this work is best understood as …

Listening, Partnering, Designing: Smu Libraries’ Journey Towards Human-Centered Wellness, Vincent Ong, Devika Sangaram, Zhenyan Li

Research Collection Library

As student wellness emerges as one of the most pressing concerns facing academic institutions today, libraries are uniquely and powerfully positioned to reimagine their spaces and services as holistic, human-centered environments that nurture the whole person. This paper presents three initiatives by the Singapore Management University (SMU) Libraries that embody this vision, collectively affirming the library's evolving role as a human-centered wellness hub and its commitment to actively shaping a more inclusive and people-first future.

The first initiative repurposed a vacated collection space into a wellbeing-centered quiet study environment, incorporating user experience (UX) design principles and longitudinal survey evidence, to …

Marital Status And Wellbeing Of Females In Egypt: Informing The Discourse And Exploring A New Framework, Hoda Rashad, Mohamed Hassan, Amr El Sayed, Rania Elsebaie Oct 2026

Marital Status And Wellbeing Of Females In Egypt: Informing The Discourse And Exploring A New Framework, Hoda Rashad, Mohamed Hassan, Amr El Sayed, Rania Elsebaie

Faculty Books

Egypt is experiencing important changes in marriage formation and dissolution amid broader social, economic, and gender transformations. This study examines these changes by analyzing the recent patterns and social distribution of delayed and non-occurrence of marriage and divorce, their association with women’s empowerment, and their implications for women’s subjective wellbeing. Drawing on nationally representative quantitative data alongside exploratory qualitative evidence, the study also develops and investigates a “Conscious Decision Model” to examine how resources, agency, aspirations, and prevailing gender relations may shape women’s marital decisions and wellbeing. The analysis responds to public narratives that frequently attribute delayed marriage and divorce …

Women's Experiences Of Menstrual Pain And Perceptions Of Acupuncture: A Qualitative Study, Weiting Liu, Amanda Towell-Barnard, Khui Hung Lee Oct 2026

Women's Experiences Of Menstrual Pain And Perceptions Of Acupuncture: A Qualitative Study, Weiting Liu, Amanda Towell-Barnard, Khui Hung Lee

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Introduction: Menstrual pain is a common reproductive health concern that can substantially disrupt physical, emotional, and social well-being, yet it is frequently normalised and insufficiently addressed within healthcare encounters. Acupuncture is increasingly used as a complementary approach for menstrual pain management; however, little qualitative research has explored how women understand, interpret, and navigate this option within their menstrual care.

Methods: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted using four online focus groups with 14 women aged 19–46 years residing in Australia who self-reported primary dysmenorrhea. Participants were purposively sampled from respondents to a previous cross-sectional survey study who had indicated willingness …

A Country-Specific Oil Price Uncertainty Index For The Philippines And Its Implications For Inflation Expectations, Aris Zoleta Oct 2026

A Country-Specific Oil Price Uncertainty Index For The Philippines And Its Implications For Inflation Expectations, Aris Zoleta

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

This paper examines the role of oil price uncertainty in shaping household inflation expectations and broader inflation dynamics in the Philippines. It develops a novel country-specific oil price uncertainty (OPU) index using a news-based approach and combines this measure with quarterly household inflation expectations from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Consumer Expectations Survey. Using a Bayesian structural vector autoregression identified via narrative sign restrictions, the paper isolates unexpected oil price uncertainty shocks and compares their macroeconomic effects with shocks associated with realized movements in Brent crude oil prices. The results show that positive oil price uncertainty shocks increase household inflation …

Evaluating Large-Scale Propensity Score Adjustment When Sample Size Is Small, Fleur Vereijken, Jenna M Reps, Marc A Suchard, Linying Zhang, George Hripcsak, Peter R Rijnbeek, Ross D Williams, Martijn J Schuemie Oct 2026

Evaluating Large-Scale Propensity Score Adjustment When Sample Size Is Small, Fleur Vereijken, Jenna M Reps, Marc A Suchard, Linying Zhang, George Hripcsak, Peter R Rijnbeek, Ross D Williams, Martijn J Schuemie

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Large-scale propensity score (LSPS) models are increasingly used to control confounding in observational studies, but their reliability in small-sample settings is unclear. Small samples can limit a study's ability to estimate propensity scores accurately and achieve adequate covariate balance, raising concerns about insufficient confounding adjustment. Resulting in small datasets being excluded, despite potentially containing valid information.

METHODS: We evaluated the balancing and bias reduction performance of LSPS models using six target-comparator pairs. To emulate a distributed data network analysis setting, we partitioned two large real-world data sources into smaller subsets. Within each subset, LSPS models were fit locally and …

Mora Valley Of The Mills 2026: A Documentary Report History Of The Milling Industry And Cultural Heritage Preservation, Jose A. Rivera Oct 2026

Mora Valley Of The Mills 2026: A Documentary Report History Of The Milling Industry And Cultural Heritage Preservation, Jose A. Rivera

Faculty Publications

The flour mills along the upper Mora River constitute the largest number of still standing commercial mills in the State of New Mexico, namely the Cleveland Roller Mill, the St. Vrain Mill, the Gordon-Sánchez Mill, and the La Cueva Mill at the Houser Raspberry Ranch. Notably, all four mills are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. During their heyday, 1964-1920, Mora County was seen as the “breadbasket of New Mexico” due to its bountiful supply of cereal and cool climate vegetables. Local acequia farmers supplied the mills with the input of wheat, corn and other grains that led …

Analysis And Design Of Multi-Winding Current Ballasted Magnetics For Integrated Dc-Dc Conversion, Kishalay Datta Oct 2026

Analysis And Design Of Multi-Winding Current Ballasted Magnetics For Integrated Dc-Dc Conversion, Kishalay Datta

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Power conversion circuits have become a bottleneck in terms of reducing the size and cost of modern electronic systems in a vast number of applications ranging from personal devices, to automotive systems, to data centers. This has motivated designs at higher frequencies where smaller passive components can be used. Unfortunately, magnetic components scale poorly to smaller dimensions. In addition, the AC resistance of magnetic components deteriorates due to current crowding effects at high frequencies. This has resulted in fully- integrated power converters with planar magnetic components having efficiencies lower than what may be theoretically achieved. In this work, we investigate …

On Canvas: The Origins And Implications Of A Common Phrase, Kerr Houston Oct 2026

On Canvas: The Origins And Implications Of A Common Phrase, Kerr Houston

Art Inquiries

Why do modern art historians and conservators describe paintings executed on cloth in Europe in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries as works on canvas, when late medieval and early Renaissance sources never do the same? This article answers that question by tracing and analyzing the evolution of canvas as a term in the history of painting. Until the late 1400s, it will be argued, the term canvas and its regional variants connoted coarse woven fabrics made of hemp that were associated with rugged, utilitarian needs and rural poverty—but not with painting. By contrast, artists and related texts relied on …

Marie Taylor Barton And Southern Modernism, Cynthia Fowler Oct 2026

Marie Taylor Barton And Southern Modernism, Cynthia Fowler

Art Inquiries

This paper examines the efforts by Southern artist Marie Taylor Barton (1904-1992) of Nashville, Tennessee to spread the principles of modern art to her community through her art practice and her advocacy for modern art. Barton emerged as an artist in the first half of the twentieth century. She studied with New York modern artist Ralph Pearson (1883-1958), an underrecognized but highly influential art teacher, at his summer school in Gloucester, Massachusetts. While in Gloucester, she also heard lectures by artist Hans Hofmann and visited Dartmouth College to see José Clemente Orozco’s mural The Epic of American Civilization (1932-34) that …
