Investigating Tesol Teachers' Awareness Of Critical Pedagogy At Higher Education Institutions In Oman: Implications For Critical Professional Development, Thuraya Al Riyami, Ali Al-Issa
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
Critical Pedagogy (CP) has been proposed as an alternative pedagogy capable of meeting the complex demands of teaching English within a particular sociopolitical context. Despite the fact that CP has been present in education since the 1960s, much of the research on CP has been conducted recently in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) contexts. There is a growing but as yet small amount of research that addresses the usage of CP in TESOL contexts, to which this study hopes to make a useful contribution. Therefore, this study investigates the extent to which TESOL teachers from four …

Condemnation Of Religious Concepts: An Examination Of Chubak's "An Afternoon In Late Autumn" Through Bakhtin's Theory Of Grotesque Realism, Sayed Mohammad Anoosheh, Muhammad Hussein Oroskhan
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The first traces of modernism in Iranian society can be found in the second decade of twentieth century which was deeply embedded with religious concepts. With regard to Persian literature, short story was developed as a new genre and a sign of modernism of that period by prominent Iranian writers such as Sadeq Hedayat (1903-1951), Mohammad Ali Jamalzadeh (1892-1997) and Sadegh Chubak (1916-1998). In this way a cultural clash was broken out between the traditional religious concepts and the new modern ideas. Among these writers, Chubak was more influenced by the doctrine of modernism. He expressed his message colloquially through …

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Body Language In Intercultural Communication, Miramar Damanhouri
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
This study is an attempt to explore the advantages and disadvantages of non-verbal communication, specifically body language, in intercultural settings, and the extent to which non-verbal factors contribute to the success of communication , by interviewing 31 English language instructors at the English language Institute at King Abdulaziz University. The instructors came from different cultural backgrounds and their length of stay in Saudi Arabia varies from 1 year to more than 7 years. The findings show that although the main function of body language in an intercultural setting is to clarify meaning when language is a barrier, the difference in …

That Was Close! Reward Reporting Of Cybersecurity “Near Misses”, Jonathan Bair, Steven M. Bellovin, Andrew Manley, Blake Reid, Adam Shostak

Building, deploying, and maintaining systems with sufficient cybersecurity is challenging. Faster improvement would be valuable to society as a whole. Are we doing as much as we can to improve? We examine robust and long-standing systems for learning from near misses in aviation, and propose the creation of a Cyber Safety Reporting System (CSRS).
To support this argument, we examine the liability concerns which inhibit learning, including both civil and regulatory liability. We look to the way in which cybersecurity engineering and science is done today, and propose that a small amount of ‘policy entrepreneurship’ could have substantial positive impact. …
The Consensus Myth In Criminal Justice Reform, Benjamin Levin
The Consensus Myth In Criminal Justice Reform, Benjamin Levin
Publications
It has become popular to identify a “consensus” on criminal justice reform, but how deep is that consensus, actually? This Article argues that the purported consensus is much more limited than it initially appears. Despite shared reformist vocabulary, the consensus rests on distinct critiques that identify different flaws and justify distinct policy solutions. The underlying disagreements transcend traditional left/right political divides and speak to deeper disputes about the state and the role of criminal law in society.
The Article maps two prevailing, but fundamentally distinct, critiques of criminal law: (1) the quantitative approach (what I call the “over” frame); and …

Deconstructing The Epistemic Challenges To Mass Atrocity Prosecutions, Nancy Amoury Combs
Deconstructing The Epistemic Challenges To Mass Atrocity Prosecutions, Nancy Amoury Combs
Faculty Publications
Mass atrocity prosecutions are credited with advancing a host of praiseworthy objectives. They are believed to impose much-needed retribution, deter future atrocities, and affirm the rule of law in previously lawless societies. However, mass atrocity prosecutions will accomplish none of these laudable ends unless they are able to find accurate facts. Convicting the appropriate individuals of the appropriate crimes is a necessary and foundational condition for the success of mass atrocity prosecutions. But it is a condition that is frequently difficult to meet, as mass atrocity prosecutions are often bedeviled by pervasive and invidious obstacles to accurate fact-finding. This Article …

The proficiency in multiple foreign languages is a basic assumption for successful communication in tourism. Tourism and mobility have a significant and important role, where intercultural contacts contribute to the development of intercultural dialogue. This paper attempts to explore gender differences in the perceptions of students from the Rochester Institute of Technology, RIT Croatia regarding the importance of knowing various foreign languages in tourism. The results obtained could help in raising the awareness of the importance of the role of learning and teaching foreign languages, with potential effects in developing and promoting tourism in Croatia. The key research finding is …

Improved Method Of Heuristic Classification Of Vowels From An Acoustic Signal, Josef Krocil, Zdenek Machacek, Jiri Koziorek, Radek Martinek, Jan Nedoma, Marcel Fajkus
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
This paper describes research in the field of the improved methodology of the classification of vowels /a, a:/, /$\varepsilon$, $\varepsilon$:/, /ı, i:/, /o, o:/, and /u, u:/ (vowel symbols according to IPA, i.e. International Phonetic Alphabet). The aim is to develop an improved method enabling the automatic allocation of vowel symbols to the corresponding time segments of acoustic recordings of an undisturbed speech signal. The combined classification method is based on finding frequencies of the first two local maxims (formants) in a smoothed linear predictive amplitude spectrum (LPC, linear predictive coding) and zero-crossing values of each speech active voiced short-term …

Rewriting Spinsterhood : Single Women In American And British Women's Novels Since 1960, Kimberly Volmer
Rewriting Spinsterhood : Single Women In American And British Women's Novels Since 1960, Kimberly Volmer
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation argues that stereotypes about the Victorian spinster continue to influence the depiction of the single woman in American and British literature since 1960. Perceived as a threat to heteronormative culture, the single woman protagonist must contend with stereotypes of the "old maid" and the "spinster" that culminate in three characteristics of single woman fiction: that the protagonist is perceived as an object of speculation, that she must answer for her singlehood, and that she should find work caring for a surrogate family. Writers engage in several narrative strategies to deflect, revise, and occasionally reinscribe stereotypes of single womanhood. …

Here Comes The Monkey! : Best Practices For Using Student Test Scores As Part Of The Teacher Evaluation Process Based On An Analysis Of Legislation And Litigation In Early-Adopting Race To The Top States, Julie Dausey Oziemkowski
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Numerous lawsuits have been filed against school officials since the first Race to the Top (RTTT) monies were awarded in 2011, requiring school districts in participating states to incorporate student scores on standardized tests into their teacher evaluation processes. This study researched the history of standardized testing in the United States from Horace Mann to Common Core, the timeline of education reform in the United States, changes to state statutes in response to the federal Race to the Top program, and litigation filed in early-adopting RTTT states in response to the student growth component. It concludes with findings that provide …
The Death Penalty As Incapacitation, Marah Stith Mcleod
The Death Penalty As Incapacitation, Marah Stith Mcleod
Journal Articles
Courts and commentators give scant attention to the incapacitation rationale for capital punishment, focusing instead on retribution and deterrence. The idea that execution may be justified to prevent further violence by dangerous prisoners is often ignored in death penalty commentary. The view on the ground could not be more different. Hundreds of executions have been premised on the need to protect society from dangerous offenders. Two states require a finding of future dangerousness for any death sentence, and over a dozen others treat it as an aggravating factor that turns murder into a capital crime.
How can courts and commentators …

The Human Costs Of Exiting And Revising Trade And Investment Agreements: Local Community Interests, Human Rights, And Global Politics, Diane Desierto
Journal Articles
International law is both a process of assertion and reliance and a system of principles and rules: together they constitute the course of international law, confounding those critics who simplemindedly assert that it can be one (process) or the other (system) but not both. . . . we treat the international legal system as an axiom—a social fact. We differ on many other ideas: new subjects, the limits of multilateralism, fragmentation, pluralism and universality, as a result of which we continue to debate the true characteristics of the international system. States intent upon effecting changes in the law will naturally …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, the retrospective perspectives of five Ecuadoran English teachers regarding their experience in a seven-month professional development program in the US were investigated. Attention was given to how they believed the program impacted their identity, self-efficacy and how they perceived the program functioned as a community of practice (CoP). Data were collected through interviews using stimulated recall based on classrooms observation notes and memos in the teacher participants' Ecuadoran schools. Findings included that the Ecuadoran teachers felt they were positively impacted by the program. They perceived themselves as more legitimate speakers of English and more effective educators; however, …

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
I investigated statistically significant factors that effect syntactic changes in French and
English during translation of by phrases using the passive voice. Relative clauses containing this
structure were also looked at. This feature was chosen from information that was gathered from
experts in the form of academic texts on English-French translation, as well as handbooks
intended for an audience of professional translators. Data came from the proceedings of the
Canadian Parliament (the Hansard), which are published in French and English. Passive
sentences were collected from the output of the Stanford Parser. Animacy was found to be a
significant factor in …
A Tongan Cultural Model Of Identity, Tevita Molisi Manu'atu
A Tongan Cultural Model Of Identity, Tevita Molisi Manu'atu
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
This thesis examines Tongan people's assumptions and perspectives about the Tongan identity as expressed through discourse in relations to the subject. The data from these discourses were collected by conducting semi-structured interviews with twenty-eight participants from various backgrounds, focusing on two representative populations; The Kingdom of Tonga and the United States of America. The collective data was then analyzed using cultural model theory and background as a framework. This thesis examines how Tongan identity is affected from the perspectives of Tongans themselves, and what the shared conceptualization---cultural model---of Tongan identity is. This study uncovered five main components of the Tongan …

Two Filipino students, one from the Southwest and the other from the Midwest regions of the U.S. participated in the study. Two research questions guided this study; what factors influence the ethnic identity development of the 1.5 generation Filipino American immigrants, and what strategies educators can use to facilitate 1.5 generation Filipino American immigrant student success. The results of the study revealed six themes. Three themes emerged from research question one …
Linguistic Correlates Of The Quiet Ego In Narratives About The Self, Katherine Maurer
Linguistic Correlates Of The Quiet Ego In Narratives About The Self, Katherine Maurer
Masters Theses
Increasingly, research has shown that the drive to elevate the self and the excessive pursuit of self-esteem have negative effects on well-being and mental health. In addition, many of the defensive and aggressive tendencies seen in psychological research can be seen as efforts to defend and elevate the self. In contrast to these tendencies, the quiet ego construct describes a state of ego balance characterized by an inclusive sense of identity, perspective-taking, detached awareness (mindfulness), and growth orientation. The quiet ego and related qualities have been associated with many positive outcomes. A body of research using the Linguistic Inquiry and …
Assessing And Supporting The Use Of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps To Simulate Complex Phenomena, Eric Lavin
Assessing And Supporting The Use Of Fuzzy Cognitive Maps To Simulate Complex Phenomena, Eric Lavin
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
To study complex phenomena, modelers have used a wide variety of modeling techniques (e.g. agent-based modeling). While these are powerful and useful modeling methods, they are not perfect. To improve our models of complex problems, we need to apply methods that handle uncertainty such as Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCM). This thesis will show that while we use simulation models to evaluate complex phenomena, we do not apply FCMs in these evaluations very often. While they are commonly used in participatory modeling to handle uncertainty in small models, this thesis proposes and evaluates a new method to handle uncertainty in much …
Embracing Success : The Experiences Of First-Genration Students In A Freshman Learning Community, Charnell Gilbert-Thomas
Embracing Success : The Experiences Of First-Genration Students In A Freshman Learning Community, Charnell Gilbert-Thomas
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
One-third of the entering freshman class is a first-generation college student. Prior studies show that first-generation college students are low-income, they tend to graduate in six-years, and likely to leave college after their first year. Researchers have found that high-impact practices is one way to help remedy the various challenges that first-year, first-generation students' encounter. A learning community as an example of a high-impact activity makes a positive difference for students which helps first-generation students build their identities as learners. This study examined the experiences of first-generation students about how they perceive their FLC. A basic interpretive qualitative research study …

The three assertions and eight themes that emerged from the analysis of the interviews produce a more complete understanding of participants' experiences. The participants were influenced in their adaptation by emotional and ambivalent interactions, dissonances experienced day-to-day, and cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Reflecting on their …
Searching For Greener Grass : The Experiences Of African-American Educators Who Left High-Poverty, High-Minority Schools For Employment In Middle- And Upper-Class Suburban Schools, Natalie Young
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Frequently plagued by high teacher turnover rates, schools in urban areas serving high populations of minority students become labeled as "hard-to-staff schools. Research reflects that African-American teachers are highly populated within these schools. In contrast, the number of African-American teachers employed in suburban schools with smaller numbers of minority students are significantly lower. There is a deficit in the literature examining the experiences of teachers, specifically African-American teachers, who leave urban schools and gain employment in suburban, middle and upper-class schools. Teachers who leave high minority, high-poverty urban schools and gain employment in middle- and upper-class schools in suburban settings …

Exploring Factors Related To Acceptance Of 1:1 Devices Among High School Students, Victoria Therriault
Exploring Factors Related To Acceptance Of 1:1 Devices Among High School Students, Victoria Therriault
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Studies show that students in lower socioeconomic status (SES) districts tend to have fewer resources, and in turn have greater achievement gaps than their affluent peers from neighboring districts. In an effort to bridge these gaps, schools have turned to 1:1 computing to bring electronic resources to their students that they might not have otherwise. However, to date there are minimal studies indicating whether or not high school students are willing to accept technology for classroom instructional purposes. This study examined the extent to which student demographic characteristics (e.g., sex, race/ethnicity, SES) are related to their acceptance of Chromebook use …

This study also examines the roles of the student learners and the teacher in developing oral proficiency skills during two different types of tasks in the high school foreign language classroom, namely the power of the social interactions between learner groups and between learners and teacher in developing oral proficiency. Over the course of an eight-week unit of study, three participating French 2 classes and one participating French teacher completed a prescribed series of speaking tasks. Class …
Online Values Intervention For Mothers : Associations With Valued Living, Affect, And Stress, Nicole J. Holmberg
Online Values Intervention For Mothers : Associations With Valued Living, Affect, And Stress, Nicole J. Holmberg
Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) argues that psychological distress is partially due to engagement in behaviors that are not aligned with one's values. Mothers often experience psychological distress associated with their roles as parents, and this distress is negatively associated with child and family outcomes. Experimental research has shown that ACT-based values interventions can increase values-consistent behaviors, but this research has not yet been replicated in the parenting context. To address this, two brief, online, ACT-based values interventions were compared to a control task. One intervention aimed to help mothers reflect on their parenting-specific values, and the other intervention aimed …
