Dunsmuir: A View From South Of The Border, Jeffrey Pojanowski Jan 2018

Dunsmuir: A View From South Of The Border, Jeffrey Pojanowski

Journal Articles

First, I would like to thank Leonid and Paul for inviting me to contribute to this symposium. Reading up on Dunsmuir and its legacy has expanded my horizons on administrative law and introduced me to great Canadian legal scholarship. My sense is that Canadian administrative law scholars are engaged in important conversations with their counterparts in Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K., whereas U.S. scholars, per usual, are doing their own thing. For reasons I discuss below, that separation may make some sense. But I am also convinced that further conversation between these wings of Anglo-American public law is important, …

Asean Bond Market Integration: What Drives Cross-Border Bond Investment In Asean?, Angelo Taningco Jan 2018

Asean Bond Market Integration: What Drives Cross-Border Bond Investment In Asean?, Angelo Taningco

DLSU Business & Economics Review

Bond market integration in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) appears to be relatively low or weak especially in terms of intraregional bond investment despite the robust growth in bond market size in recent years and policy initiatives in support of developing bond markets in the region. This paper aims to contribute to the literature on ASEAN financial integration by providing empirical evidence and policy insights on what can help boost intra-ASEAN bond investment. Using panel regression following a gravity model framework and spanning five major ASEAN member countries—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand—over the 2001–2014 period, this …

Messianic Time And The Book Of Mormon, Alana Smith Jan 2018

Messianic Time And The Book Of Mormon, Alana Smith

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Walter Benjamin famously claimed that "only a redeemed mankind is granted the fullness of its past-which is to say, only for a redeemed mankind has its past become citable in all its moments. Each moment it has lived becomes a citation a l'ordre du jour. And that day is Judgment Day." The Book of Mormon (1830) posits a pathway to redemption for believers and organizes all time around the coming of Christ. I aim to use Benjamin's model of messianic time to interpret the complicated formal and narrative temporalities in The Book of Mormon and to offer a possible answer …

Reckoning With Race In The Book Of Mormon: A Review Of Literature, Russell W. Stevenson Jan 2018

Reckoning With Race In The Book Of Mormon: A Review Of Literature, Russell W. Stevenson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Scholars of Mormonism have seen a deluge of race literature on the Book of Mormon flow over the past five years. Compared to the robust scholarship on the use of biblical literature in constructing race, Mormonism strikes one as the particularly colorful character who showed up late to the party. For a faith system that has started to imagine itself in global terms, the implications of this recent increase are profound and invite commentary from a variety of disciplines ranging from literary criticism to forensic anthropology. This review essay holds humble aspirations for itself: to trace the basic contours of …

"Skin" Or "Scales" Of Blackness? Semitic Context As Interpretive Aid For 2 Nephi 4:35 (Los 5:21), Adam Oliver Stokes Jan 2018

"Skin" Or "Scales" Of Blackness? Semitic Context As Interpretive Aid For 2 Nephi 4:35 (Los 5:21), Adam Oliver Stokes

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Few verses in the Book of Mormon are as problematic and controversial as 2 Nephi 4:35 (LDS 5:21). Critics of the Book of Mormon have routinely pointed to this verse and its reference to Lamanites receiving a "skin of blackness" as evidence of racism and racist theology in Mormonism's sacred scriptures. The verse has also failed to escape ridicule in pop-cultural depictions of Mormonism, as seen most recently in the hit Broadway musical, The Book of Mormon. The verse and its interpretation are of perennial interest to readers of the Book of Mormon, believing or not, since the racial stance …

Building The Temple Of Nephi: Early Mormon Perceptions Of Cumorah And The New Jerusalem, Don Bradley Jan 2018

Building The Temple Of Nephi: Early Mormon Perceptions Of Cumorah And The New Jerusalem, Don Bradley

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

As a new faith's purported "Gold Bible" began rolling off the presses at the E. B. Grandin print shop, the public was curious to know the nature of that faith. Protestant sects proliferated wildly during the Second Great Awakening, particularly in the fertile soil of upstate New York's "Burned-over District:' And restorationists, like the Christian primitivist Disciples of Christ, who aimed to restore the New Testament Church, were a familiar breed among them. Such sects provided the best model for what the public might expect Palmyra's new faith to become, but actual information was still hard to come by.

The Theological Value Of The King James Language In The Book Of Mormon, Jan J. Martin Jan 2018

The Theological Value Of The King James Language In The Book Of Mormon, Jan J. Martin

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

In 1831, Alexander Campbell (1788-1866), the founder of the Disciples of Christ Church and leader in the early nineteenth-century religious reformation known as the Restoration, published a short pamphlet entitled Delusions: An Analysis of the Book of Mormon: With an Examination of Its Internal and External Evidences, and a Refutation of Its Pretences to Divine Authority. In the pamphlet, Campbell argued that the Book of Mormon was a linguistic hodgepodge, "patched up and cemented with 'And it came to pass' - 'I sayeth unto you'-'Ye saith unto him'-and all the King James' haths, dids and doths-in the lowest imitation of …

Property And The Construction Of The Information Economy: A Neo-Polanyian Ontology, Julie E. Cohen Jan 2018

Property And The Construction Of The Information Economy: A Neo-Polanyian Ontology, Julie E. Cohen

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

This chapter considers the changing roles and forms of information property within the political economy of informational capitalism. I begin with an overview of the principal methods used in law and in media and communications studies, respectively, to study information property, considering both what each disciplinary cluster traditionally has emphasized and newer, hybrid directions. Next, I develop a three-part framework for analyzing information property as a set of emergent institutional formations that both work to produce and are themselves produced by other evolving political-economic arrangements. The framework considers patterns of change in existing legal institutions for intellectual property, the ongoing …

Stewarding Treason: Political Instability In Amis And Amiloun, Maia Farrar Jan 2018

Stewarding Treason: Political Instability In Amis And Amiloun, Maia Farrar

Quidditas

When the unnamed steward in the medieval romance Amis and Amiloun attempts to join the knights’ brotherhood and prevent Amis from defiling the duke’s daughter, he is simultaneously lauded for his fidelity and reviled as a “fals feloun.” Medieval stewards are defined by their status as assistants to the king’s interests, and yet if the narrative or scholarship remember him at all, it is as the stereotypical “fals steward” who betrays his post. This article considers the implications to the political body when the “traitor” has a superior legal political standing than the protagonist(s). The work legitimizes the traitor by …

The Work Of Their Hands, Taylor Cozzens Jan 2018

The Work Of Their Hands, Taylor Cozzens

BYU Studies

When I turned eighteen, I took a job as a laborer for a construction company that was building dormitories on a university campus in High Point, North Carolina. It was a new world for me, one of mud, concrete, and rebar. The Lulls, excavators, and flatbeds crawled around the job site, engines roaring, back-up beepers blaring. Meanwhile, the chop saws competed with the quickie saws to see which could scream the loudest as they sliced through wood, metal, and concrete. I soon came to know the tingling in the fingers after using a Sawzall and the smell of hot metal …

The Agency Of Wives In High Medieval German Courtly Romances And Late Medieval Verse Narratives: From Hartmann Von Aue To Heinrich Kaufringer, Albrecht Classen Jan 2018

The Agency Of Wives In High Medieval German Courtly Romances And Late Medieval Verse Narratives: From Hartmann Von Aue To Heinrich Kaufringer, Albrecht Classen

Quidditas

In some secular medieval literature married life increasingly gained respect and literary traction, as illustrated by the rise of genres such as verse narratives (fabliaux, mæren, novelle, tales), early prose novels, didactic literature, and Shrovetide plays. In that world we encounter many discussions about the proper relationship between husband and wife, about the individual’s role within society, and also about economic and financial aspects that had a large impact on private life, and hence also on the gender relationship. The phenomenon of female agency within marriage, which this paper will investigate, comes to the fore in more texts than …

Review Of The Trek East: Mormonism Meets Japan, 1901–1968, By Shinji Takagi, Emily Anderson Jan 2018

Review Of The Trek East: Mormonism Meets Japan, 1901–1968, By Shinji Takagi, Emily Anderson

Mormon Studies Review

Shinji Takagi’s The Trek East: Mormonism Meets Japan, 1901–1968 is a sweeping and detailed account of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ struggle to establish and sustain a mission in Japan. Organized both chronologically and thematically, it recounts the hardships and frustrations endured by the first group of missionaries who ventured to Japan between 1901 and 1924—the first attempt at establishing the Japan Mission—and the more successful second attempt initiated during the Allied occupation of Japan and further reinforced during a particularly dynamic period of leadership and activity in the 1960s. While earlier studies of Mormonism in Japan …

Investigating The Third Space: A New Agenda For Teacher Education Research, Jori S. Beck Jan 2018

Investigating The Third Space: A New Agenda For Teacher Education Research, Jori S. Beck

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to advocate for an expansion of third-space ideology to the research conducted in clinical teacher preparation programs including research designs and methods of data collection. Clinical teacher preparation has been advocated since the 1980s and is now being systematically realized in the early 21st century. Thus, it is time to revisit research designs and data collection related to this model. The author illustrates first-, second-, and third-space programs, including an overview of teacher residency programs, before advocating a mixed methods research paradigm that aims to create democratic spaces for teacher education research. Research and …

Perceptions Of Pre-Service Teachers On Mentor Teachers’ Roles In Promoting Inclusive Practicum: Case Studies In U.S. Elementary School Contexts, Jihea Maddamsetti

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

This case study examines a Chinese and Korean-Chinese pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their mentor teachers’ role in supporting inclusive practicum experiences in U.S. elementary school contexts. The findings demonstrate that a mentor teacher’s open conversations and willingness to host those students bring positive influence on their learning and growth. The findings also indicate that the facilitative roles of mentor teachers in the promotion of inclusive environments are intersected with the socio-cultural and political contexts of practicum schools and universities. The study concludes with implications for enhancing the inclusion of diverse pre-service teachers through collaborative roles of multiple practicum stakeholders, including …

The Modulatory Effect Of Expectations On Memory Retrieval During Sentence Comprehension, Luca Campanelli, Julie A. Van Dyke, Klara Marton Jan 2018

The Modulatory Effect Of Expectations On Memory Retrieval During Sentence Comprehension, Luca Campanelli, Julie A. Van Dyke, Klara Marton

Publications and Research

Memory retrieval and probabilistic expectations are recognized factors in sentence comprehension that capture two different critical aspects of processing difficulty: the cost of retrieving and integrating previously processed elements with the new input words and the cost of incorrect predictions about upcoming words or structures in a sentence. Although these two factors have independently received substantial support from the extant literature, how they interact remains poorly understood. The present study investigated memory retrieval and expectation in a single experiment, pitting these factors against each other. Results showed a significant interference effect in both response time to the comprehension questions and …

How Do You Depict The Life Of A Soul?: Word And Text In And As Image In Soviet Nonconformist Art, Matthew Blong Jan 2018

How Do You Depict The Life Of A Soul?: Word And Text In And As Image In Soviet Nonconformist Art, Matthew Blong

MA Theses

Visual artworks by Soviet nonconformist artists, especially those associated with the Moscow Conceptualist and Sots-Art movements of the mid-1960s to mid-1980s, prominently feature experimentations with word and text—both in and as image—for a wide variety of reasons that have been studied by scholars of Soviet and Russian art.

In this paper, a formal and conceptual analysis of nearly thirty text-and-image artworks by nonconformist artists of the period traces the motivations and inspirations for this highly creative and generative practice. Beginning with the desire to resume where the historic Russian avant-garde had left off, these artworks challenge notions of language as …

Understanding The Abrahamic Covenant Through The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2018

Understanding The Abrahamic Covenant Through The Book Of Mormon, Noel B. Reynolds

BYU Studies

Latter-day Saint discourse concerning Abraham and the blessings and covenants given to him by the Lord is distinguished by its reliance on the restoration of ancient scriptures and other revelations given to Joseph Smith. The revival of scholarly interest in Abraham in recent decades provides a timely opportunity to explore the contemporary findings of biblical scholars from a Latter-day Saint perspective—which, in turn, invites an in-depth exploration of how the Lord’s covenants with Abraham were understood by the Nephite prophets in the Book of Mormon, how their perspectives compare with contemporary biblical scholarship, and how the Nephite perspective may modify …

Multicultural World In The Poetry Of Shota Rustaveli And The Issue Of Paradigm Shift In The Multicultural World Context, Nino Pirtskhalava Jan 2018

Multicultural World In The Poetry Of Shota Rustaveli And The Issue Of Paradigm Shift In The Multicultural World Context, Nino Pirtskhalava

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The paper scrutinizes the thematic diversity of the seminal piece of the medieval Georgian poetry by Shota Rustaveli. The rich set of spiritual some emotional values of the poetry is placed within the broadest context of the Oriental and Occidental traditions of classical poetry and world outlooks. The important point is made about moving themes and poetic instruments from Orient to West. Linkages of the epical poems of Western poetry and the Orient are argued to demonstrate the thematic convergences in creativity of Western and Oriental genius poets of the classical period. Representation of richest variety of values and eternal …

A Caucasian Utopia In Russian Literature And Politics: Alexander Griboedov And Iuri Tynianov, Ekaterina Dmitrieva Jan 2018

A Caucasian Utopia In Russian Literature And Politics: Alexander Griboedov And Iuri Tynianov, Ekaterina Dmitrieva

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The protagonists of my paper are the Russian writer and diplomat Alexander Griboedov, the author of the “Project for the Establishment of the Russian Caucasian Company,” which he considered, if one can believe some sources, the main achievement of his life. Approximately 100 years after the death of Griboedov, Iuri Tynianov wrote his fictionalized biography where all of the action revolves around the Caucasus Project, with which, according to Tynianov, Griboedov signed his own death sentence. Here the question naturally arises: why did Tynianov, forced, after the defeat of Formalism, to turn to fiction and literary heroes, shy away from …

Investigating Tesol Teachers' Awareness Of Critical Pedagogy At Higher Education Institutions In Oman: Implications For Critical Professional Development, Thuraya Al Riyami, Ali Al-Issa Jan 2018

Investigating Tesol Teachers' Awareness Of Critical Pedagogy At Higher Education Institutions In Oman: Implications For Critical Professional Development, Thuraya Al Riyami, Ali Al-Issa

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Critical Pedagogy (CP) has been proposed as an alternative pedagogy capable of meeting the complex demands of teaching English within a particular sociopolitical context. Despite the fact that CP has been present in education since the 1960s, much of the research on CP has been conducted recently in Teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) contexts. There is a growing but as yet small amount of research that addresses the usage of CP in TESOL contexts, to which this study hopes to make a useful contribution. Therefore, this study investigates the extent to which TESOL teachers from four …

Condemnation Of Religious Concepts: An Examination Of Chubak's "An Afternoon In Late Autumn" Through Bakhtin's Theory Of Grotesque Realism, Sayed Mohammad Anoosheh, Muhammad Hussein Oroskhan

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The first traces of modernism in Iranian society can be found in the second decade of twentieth century which was deeply embedded with religious concepts. With regard to Persian literature, short story was developed as a new genre and a sign of modernism of that period by prominent Iranian writers such as Sadeq Hedayat (1903-1951), Mohammad Ali Jamalzadeh (1892-1997) and Sadegh Chubak (1916-1998). In this way a cultural clash was broken out between the traditional religious concepts and the new modern ideas. Among these writers, Chubak was more influenced by the doctrine of modernism. He expressed his message colloquially through …
