The goal of this meta-analysis is to evaluate how instructional technology has impacted advanced second language (AL2) development. Although numerous meta-analyses have been conducted within the CALL literature over the past two decades, they primarily focus upon learning outcomes and related effect sizes. None focus on advanced learning per se. Where AL2 is even mentioned, which is only rarely, little or no attention is paid to critical research parameters within the studies that are analyzed. Most notably, in summarizing learning outcomes, the linguistic competence of learners claimed to be at advanced level is simply taken at face value. So, …

In recent years, culinary mysteries have enjoyed immense popularity in Germany. Marketed to both fans of detective fiction and food aficionados, they enjoy a large crossover appeal, which at least partially explains their commercial success. Ella Danz is the author of the Georg Angermüller mystery series (started in 2006, nine books so far) set in the Northern German Lübeck area. While this series, whose main protagonist is a police inspector who likes to cook and eat, did not start out as a culinary mystery series per se, it has developed into one of the most popular manifestations of this subgenre. …

Shared Landscapes, Contested Borders: Locating Disciplinarity In An Ma Program Revision, Whitney Douglas, Heidi Estrem, Kelly Myers, Dawn Shepherd
English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations
It is not unusual to consider a discipline spatially as a "space defined or touched by a particular characteristic or force" (Wardle and Downs, this collection, emphasis added). This conceptualization makes visible the metaphor at play here: territories are demarcated and differentiated from neighboring environments by borders that can be more or less visible. In this chapter, we use our experience as faculty members invested in a substantive revision of an MA program revision to explore how that process of delineation opens up new questions about disciplinarity. We sought to create a generous curricular space within an MA degree, …
Distribution And Community Reception Of Medication Disposal Pouches Compared With Distribution Of Unintentional Overdose-Related Deaths In Montgomery County, Ohio, Parvaneh K. Nouri
Distribution And Community Reception Of Medication Disposal Pouches Compared With Distribution Of Unintentional Overdose-Related Deaths In Montgomery County, Ohio, Parvaneh K. Nouri
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Introduction: Substance misuse is a significant problem nationally, where Ohio ranks within the top five states contributing to this burden. Montgomery County experiences the most deaths in the state. While illicit fentanyl and analogs are increasingly responsible for overdose-related deaths, prescription misuse is a significant risk factor for progression to illicit substance use. Methods: Survey data from a pilot medication safety campaign utilizing medication disposal pouches were evaluated by descriptive analysis and qualitative analysis. Survey findings were compared to data of all unintentional overdose-related deaths in Montgomery County from January to October, 2017. Secondary analysis of death data was performed …
Marijuana Use Among Pregnant Women In A High-Risk Population, Shanice A. Akoto
Marijuana Use Among Pregnant Women In A High-Risk Population, Shanice A. Akoto
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Background: Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit substance in pregnancy, often used concurrently with tobacco, increasing the risk for prematurity and low birth weight. Programs such as Healthy Start and CenteringPregnancy® provide resources and prenatal care to women in underserved communities in hopes of improving birth outcomes.
Objective: Evaluate marijuana use in pregnant women living in Montgomery County, Ohio in the highest risk zip codes (45402, 45403, 45405, 45414, 45416, 45417, 45426) and determine if use at delivery is lower in women enrolled in CenteringPregnancy® compared to women who were not. Methods: A secondary analysis of previously collected de-identified …
Ontology Design Patterns For Winston’S Taxonomy Of Part-Whole Relations, Cogan Shimizu, Pascal Hitzler, Clare Paul
Ontology Design Patterns For Winston’S Taxonomy Of Part-Whole Relations, Cogan Shimizu, Pascal Hitzler, Clare Paul
Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications
While the formal modeling of part-whole relationships has been of interest, and studied, in many fields including ontology modeling, as of yet there has been no dedicated ontology design pattern which goes beyond the modeling of an absolute minimum. We correct this by providing two patterns based on Winston's landmark paper, "A Taxonomy of Part-Whole Relations".

Metrics For Evaluating Quality Of Embeddings For Ontological Concepts, Faisal Alshargi, Saeedeh Shekarpour, Tommaso Soru, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
Although there is an emerging trend towards generating embeddings for primarily unstructured data and, recently, for structured data, no systematic suite for measuring the quality of embeddings has been proposed yet. This deficiency is further sensed with respect to embeddings generated for structured data because there are no concrete evaluation metrics measuring the quality of the encoded structure as well as semantic patterns in the embedding space. In this paper, we introduce a framework containing three distinct tasks concerned with the individual aspects of ontological concepts: (i) the categorization aspect, (ii) the hierarchical aspect, and (iii) the relational aspect. Then, …

Kratylos: A Tool For Sharing Interlinearized And Lexical Data In Diverse Formats, Daniel Kaufman, Raphael Finkel
Publications and Research
In this paper we present Kratylos, at www.kratylos.org/, a web application that creates searchable multimedia corpora from data collections in diverse formats, including collections of interlinearized glossed text (IGT) and dictionaries. There exists a crucial lacuna in the electronic ecology that supports language documentation and linguistic research. Vast amounts of IGT are produced in stand-alone programs without an easy way to share them publicly as dynamic databases. Solving this problem will not only unlock an enormous amount of linguistic information that can be shared easily across the web, it will also improve accountability by allowing us to verify analyses across …

I consider my media praxis project to be labs, encounters, theory-making and scholarly output where doing and thinking in community (often the classroom and its linked spaces) in the sites or technologies under consideration is the “scholarly” product. That is to say, the doing and the process is the product, and what remains can also be shared and/or evaluated, as needed. This sharing of process is what I model now. I describe my most recent project, Ev-Ent-Anglement, engaging again critically with social media networks from inside them, share some of my lessons learned about production and action-based New Media/DH research, …

Escaping The Logic Of Anarchy: A New Model Of Collective Security, Bryan H. Druzin
Escaping The Logic Of Anarchy: A New Model Of Collective Security, Bryan H. Druzin
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Past attempts to create collective security, such as the League of Nations and the United Nations, have failed. This article argues that this is because the anarchic structure of the international system does not permit a top-down approach to the problem. It is argued that the solution is to create a collective security model that is bottom-up rather than top-down.
This article proposes a model of collective security that uses positive feedback generated by network effects to trigger the bottom-up emergence of a global collective security organization. Driven by fear and self-interest, weak states join this fledgling organization, increasing its …

Meeting The Demands Of A Multi-Dimensional Professional Writing Course For Tertiary Students, Pei Soo Ang, Rema Menon
Research Publications (2016 to 2020)
What distinguishes English for Specific Purpose (ESP) from General English (GE) is not the existence of a need but the awareness of it (Hutchinson & Waters, 1987). And thus, in designing a compulsory English course for advanced users of English (CEFR B2/Low C1), the Faculty of Languages & Linguistics, University of Malaya (a Malaysian public university) faces the challenge of meeting the multi-dimensional demands of a holistic ESP course. Hence, this paper concerns how we have aligned the course design of an advanced professional writing course for tertiary students with the various institutional demands to equip undergraduates with employable skills …
Culture And Time Perception: Implications For Mental Representation And Decisions, Siew Hong Tan
Culture And Time Perception: Implications For Mental Representation And Decisions, Siew Hong Tan
School of Psychology Theses
This thesis examines cultural variations in time perception, as well as the possible influences on mental representation and decisions. Building on prior research on cultural differences in time-related perceptions, two main time perceptions were identified and focused on, namely temporal orientation and the use of time metaphor. The temporal orientation line of investigation explores the implications of a stronger future versus past orientation among English and Mandarin-speakers respectively. Based on Construal Level Theory, temporal orientation is expected to be related to psychological distance, which in turn affects the mental representations individuals form. The findings supported a stronger future orientation among …

Use Of Memantine In Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Report, Adam Schindzielorz Md, Kristina Bryant-Melvin Md, Suzanne Holroyd Md, Kelly Melvin Md
Psychiatry
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder of varying severity and phenotypic expression that is characterized by persistent deficits in social relatedness, communication skills, and interfering repetitive behaviors. Associated behavioral pathology can include inattention, aggression, irritability, hyperactivity, anxiety, and self-injury. Currently, FDAapproved treatments exist to treat secondary symptoms but not core symptomatology. The etiology of autism and other ASD is thought to be multifactorial but is not well understood. Some studies suggest that glutamate excitotoxicity may play a role in the pathogenesis of ASD. Memantine, an NMDAreceptor antagonist, could potentially address core symptoms in ASD by targeting disease-specific pathophysiology. …
English Proficiency And Earnings Of U.S. Immigrants, Toni F. Moeller
English Proficiency And Earnings Of U.S. Immigrants, Toni F. Moeller
Honors Program Theses
Every year thousands of immigrants come to the United States and look to join the labor force. Most of these immigrants have a first language that is not English. This study analyzes how wage income, business and farm income, and investment income are affected by English proficiency in 2004, 2009, and 2014. I use data from the American Community Survey and a log-linear econometric model to explore this relationship. I conclude that wage income and business and farm income had a positive relationship with English proficiency in 2004, 2009, and 2014 whereas investment income only had a significant positive relationship …

On The Problem And Promise Of Metaphor Use In Science And Science Communication, Cynthia Taylor, Bryan M. Dewsbury
On The Problem And Promise Of Metaphor Use In Science And Science Communication, Cynthia Taylor, Bryan M. Dewsbury
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
The language of science is largely metaphorical. Scientists rely on metaphor and analogy to make sense of scientific phenomena and communicate their findings to each other and to the public. Yet, despite their utility, metaphors can also constrain scientific reasoning, contribute to public misunderstandings, and, at times, inadvertently reinforce stereotypes and messages that undermine the goals of inclusive science. This paper 1) examines the generative potential of metaphors to the advancement of scientific knowledge and science communication, 2) highlights the ways in which outdated metaphors may limit scientific inquiry and contribute to public misunderstandings, and 3) critically analyzes the implications …

Information Needs Of Korean Immigrant Mothers In The United States For Their Children’S College Preparation, Jungwon Yoon, Soojung Kim, Natalie Taylor
School of Information Faculty Publications
This study aims to understand the information needs of Korean immigrant mothers in the United States for their high school children’s college preparation. A content analysis was conducted for the messages posted to a “motherhood” forum on the MissyUSA website. In total, 754 posts were analyzed in terms of a child’s grade, college preparation stage, type of post, and topic of post. The study found that there is a range of information needed at different stages in a child’s education. Many of the demonstrated information needs showed similarities to those of other immigrant groups, but there were also community-specific themes, …

Privileging Public Defense Research, Janet Moore, Ellen Yaroshefsky, Andrew Davies
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
Empirical research on public defense is a new and rapidly growing field in which the quality of attorney-client communication is emerging as a top priority. For decades, law has lagged behind medicine and other professions in the empirical study of effective communication. The few studies of attorney-client communication focus mainly on civil cases. They also tend to rely on role-playing by non-lawyers or on post hoc inquiries about past experiences. Direct observation by researchers of real-time defendant-defender communication offers advantages over those approaches, but injecting researchers into the attorney-client dyad is in tension with legal and ethical precepts that protect …
The Association Between Designation As Leader In Lgbt Healthcare Equality And Hospitals' Patient Experience Scores, Rita Dileo
All ETDs from UAB
ABSTRACT There are an increasing number of LGBT individuals who openly acknowledge their sexuality and are visibly part of society. Unfortunately, a stigma remains among this group and a fear of discrimination that prevents many individuals from seeking healthcare. This is a long-standing issue and further challenged by lack of culturally competent LGBT healthcare providers. Using a conceptual framework based on the Resource Dependence and Resource-Based theories, the association between designation as a 2016 Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality and patient experience scores are evaluated. Regression analyses were performed to assess the association between market factors, organizational characteristics, HCAHPS survey …

OUT OF AMERICA WILLIAM ‘BO’ KING ENGLISH ABSTRACT Out of America is a creative nonfiction novella that tells the story of my life as an expatriate minor, living away from the United States where I was born. The story covers a number of themes including divorce, kidnapping, race, anti-American sentiment, death, rebirth, and figuring out my place in the middle of all of it. I wanted to write this piece to finally give voice to myself and my history. The story begins with my family’s flight from the United States. This came after legal recourse had been denied following allegations …

Exploring Relational Ethics And Care: A Longitudinal Study Of A Hong Kong Cellist's Marriage Disintegration And Identity Change, Annabella S K Fung Ms
The Qualitative Report
I am a survivor of divorce. When I visited Hong Kong, a mutual friend introduced me to a cellist going through a divorce as a participant for my research which investigates music learning and identity of Chinese musicians. My research took a different path because I decided to explore how she constructed meaning through divorce, leading to her identity change. I referred her to counselling and supported her through regular messaging. Research is more than just data collection; the wounded-healer standing by the wounded is therapeutic for both of us. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study reports our conversations, …

In 1942 Mao Zedong presented an influential policy for revolutionary culture in his “Talks at the Yan’an Conference on Literature and Art.” Mao detailed how the arts could act as a “powerful weapon” in uniting and educating the masses, “attacking and annihilating the enemy,” and simultaneously foster solidarity in the struggle (Translated by Bonnie McDougall. Ann Arbor: Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan, 1980). Accordingly, revolutionary music should focus on the three pillars of socialist society: workers, peasants, and soldiers. Many children’s songs were composed and disseminated in attempts to educate the next generation of Chinese socialist society. Songs …

Scripts have been proposed to model the stereotypical event sequences found in narratives. They can be applied to make a variety of inferences including filling gaps in the narratives and resolving ambiguous references. This paper proposes the first formal framework for scripts based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). Our framework supports robust inference and learning algorithms, which are lacking in previous clustering models. We develop an algorithm for structure and parameter learning based on Expectation Maximization and evaluate it on a number of natural datasets. The results show that our algorithm is superior to several informed baselines for predicting missing …
