Privileging Public Defense Research, Janet Moore, Ellen Yaroshefsky, Andrew Davies Jan 2018

Privileging Public Defense Research, Janet Moore, Ellen Yaroshefsky, Andrew Davies

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Empirical research on public defense is a new and rapidly growing field in which the quality of attorney-client communication is emerging as a top priority. For decades, law has lagged behind medicine and other professions in the empirical study of effective communication. The few studies of attorney-client communication focus mainly on civil cases. They also tend to rely on role-playing by non-lawyers or on post hoc inquiries about past experiences. Direct observation by researchers of real-time defendant-defender communication offers advantages over those approaches, but injecting researchers into the attorney-client dyad is in tension with legal and ethical precepts that protect …

The Association Between Designation As Leader In Lgbt Healthcare Equality And Hospitals' Patient Experience Scores, Rita Dileo Jan 2018

The Association Between Designation As Leader In Lgbt Healthcare Equality And Hospitals' Patient Experience Scores, Rita Dileo

All ETDs from UAB

ABSTRACT There are an increasing number of LGBT individuals who openly acknowledge their sexuality and are visibly part of society. Unfortunately, a stigma remains among this group and a fear of discrimination that prevents many individuals from seeking healthcare. This is a long-standing issue and further challenged by lack of culturally competent LGBT healthcare providers. Using a conceptual framework based on the Resource Dependence and Resource-Based theories, the association between designation as a 2016 Leader in LGBT Healthcare Equality and patient experience scores are evaluated. Regression analyses were performed to assess the association between market factors, organizational characteristics, HCAHPS survey …

Out Of America, William Ervin King

All ETDs from UAB

OUT OF AMERICA WILLIAM ‘BO’ KING ENGLISH ABSTRACT Out of America is a creative nonfiction novella that tells the story of my life as an expatriate minor, living away from the United States where I was born. The story covers a number of themes including divorce, kidnapping, race, anti-American sentiment, death, rebirth, and figuring out my place in the middle of all of it. I wanted to write this piece to finally give voice to myself and my history. The story begins with my family’s flight from the United States. This came after legal recourse had been denied following allegations …

Exploring Relational Ethics And Care: A Longitudinal Study Of A Hong Kong Cellist's Marriage Disintegration And Identity Change, Annabella S K Fung Ms Jan 2018

Exploring Relational Ethics And Care: A Longitudinal Study Of A Hong Kong Cellist's Marriage Disintegration And Identity Change, Annabella S K Fung Ms

The Qualitative Report

I am a survivor of divorce. When I visited Hong Kong, a mutual friend introduced me to a cellist going through a divorce as a participant for my research which investigates music learning and identity of Chinese musicians. My research took a different path because I decided to explore how she constructed meaning through divorce, leading to her identity change. I referred her to counselling and supported her through regular messaging. Research is more than just data collection; the wounded-healer standing by the wounded is therapeutic for both of us. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study reports our conversations, …

“Tiny Little Screw Cap” (“Xiao Xiao Luosimao”): Children’S Songs From The Chinese Cultural Revolution, Lei X. Ouyang

Music Faculty Works

In 1942 Mao Zedong presented an influential policy for revolutionary culture in his “Talks at the Yan’an Conference on Literature and Art.” Mao detailed how the arts could act as a “powerful weapon” in uniting and educating the masses, “attacking and annihilating the enemy,” and simultaneously foster solidarity in the struggle (Translated by Bonnie McDougall. Ann Arbor: Center for Chinese Studies, University of Michigan, 1980). Accordingly, revolutionary music should focus on the three pillars of socialist society: workers, peasants, and soldiers. Many children’s songs were composed and disseminated in attempts to educate the next generation of Chinese socialist society. Songs …

Learning Scripts As Hidden Markov Models, J. Walker Orr, Prasad Tadepalli, Janardhan Rao Doppa, Xiaoli Fern, Thomas Dietterich

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Scripts have been proposed to model the stereotypical event sequences found in narratives. They can be applied to make a variety of inferences including filling gaps in the narratives and resolving ambiguous references. This paper proposes the first formal framework for scripts based on Hidden Markov Models (HMMs). Our framework supports robust inference and learning algorithms, which are lacking in previous clustering models. We develop an algorithm for structure and parameter learning based on Expectation Maximization and evaluate it on a number of natural datasets. The results show that our algorithm is superior to several informed baselines for predicting missing …

Event Detection With Neural Networks: A Rigorous Empirical Evaluation, J. Walker Orr, Prasad Tadepalli, Xiaoli Fern Jan 2018

Event Detection With Neural Networks: A Rigorous Empirical Evaluation, J. Walker Orr, Prasad Tadepalli, Xiaoli Fern

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Detecting events and classifying them into predefined types is an important step in knowledge extraction from natural language texts. While the neural network models have generally led the state-of-the-art, the differences in performance between different architectures have not been rigorously studied. In this paper we present a novel GRU-based model that combines syntactic information along with temporal structure through an attention mechanism. We show that it is competitive with other neural network architectures through empirical evaluations under different random initializations and training-validation-test splits of ACE2005 dataset.

An Online Training To Prepare Occupational Therapy Students To Work With Clients With Limited English Proficiency And Interpreters, Elizabeth A. Harrison, Mansha Mirza Jan 2018

An Online Training To Prepare Occupational Therapy Students To Work With Clients With Limited English Proficiency And Interpreters, Elizabeth A. Harrison, Mansha Mirza

Journal of Occupational Therapy Education

Effective communication between occupational therapists (OTs) and their clients is key to quality, client-centered services. Most OTs can expect to work with clients with Limited English Proficiency (LEP). Language barriers may negatively impact client safety and client satisfaction. Working with language interpreters is a key means for OTs to best serve clients with LEP; however, few OT curricula provide adequate training in working with interpreters. This paper presents a new, innovative online training for preparing OT students to work with clients with LEP and interpreters. The brief online training used informational slides, video role plays and written case studies to …

The Language Of Protest: Acts Of Performance, Identity And Legitimation, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill Jan 2018

The Language Of Protest: Acts Of Performance, Identity And Legitimation, Mary Lynne Gasaway Hill

Faculty Publications

Rooted in the performative of Speech Act Theory, this interdisciplinary study crafts a new model to compare the work we do with words when we protest: across genres (chants, songs, poetry, prose), from different geographies (Turkey, U.S., West Germany, Romania, Great Britain, Guatemala, Northern Ireland) and from different languages (Turkish, Spanish, English, German, Romanian, Ki’che’, Irish Gaeilge). This model generates two new concepts: pragmatic legitimacy, when a hearer recognizes a speech act, regardless of genre, as one of protest; and convocativity, the effect of convoking hearers into distinct camps, creating degrees of solidarity or distance on the protest issue. Framed …

Participants were randomly assigned to the intervention or control group. The intervention group received a total of four sessions of expressive group counseling interventions while the control group was asked to color pictures at home. Pearson correlations found statically significant relationships between acculturative stress and depressive symptoms in Korean immigrant women. The results of a one-way analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) indicated no statistically significant difference in the effect …

Consociationalism Vs. Incentivism In Divided Societies: A Question Of Threshold Design Or Of Sequencing?, Clark B. Lombardi, Pasarlay Shamshad Jan 2018

Consociationalism Vs. Incentivism In Divided Societies: A Question Of Threshold Design Or Of Sequencing?, Clark B. Lombardi, Pasarlay Shamshad

Articles

Scholarship on constitutional design for post-conflict or divided societies focuses a great deal of attention on two issues: (1) the processes and timing by which constitutional rules should be established and (2) whether constitutions should reflect a consociationalist or incentivist approach to governance. Scholars are increasingly willing to entertain the possibility that constitutions drafted during period of transition from civil war or authoritarianism need not, and often should not, answer immediately all questions that constitutions tend to answer; however, they tend to assume that the question of whether constitutions should be consociationalist or incentivist is one that should not be …

Freedom In Structure: Helping Foreign-Trained And International Graduate Students Develop Thesis Statements By Component, Elizabeth R. Baldwin Jan 2018

Freedom In Structure: Helping Foreign-Trained And International Graduate Students Develop Thesis Statements By Component, Elizabeth R. Baldwin

Articles

This article explains how foreign-trained and international graduate students can use a thesis development template to find and articulate narrow, novel, non-obvious, and useful claims for their final, academic papers in law. These students, in particular, are in need of clear direction and methods for crafting well-developed claims (or thesis statements), given that many are non-native speakers of English who trained in different legal and educational systems with different expectations about what constitutes good academic writing—in any genre, let alone law. Through the use of a thesis development template (adapted from writing advice by Joseph M. Williams and Eugene Volokh), …

An Exploration Of Research And Resources Related To Aphasia: Creating A Resource Guide, Lexie Anne Velez Diaz

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The purpose of educators is to aid their students as they develop as their own individuals. Only through education can individuals grow to become the best version of themselves, in and out of the classroom. It is crucial for educators to be aware of the many different learners in the world, so teachers are prepared for any exceptional student that enters their classroom. That is why it is so important to educate oneself on the many exceptionalities and circumstances students are facing. Encompassed within the 13 disabilities identified in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA, 1975), are sub categories …

A Cultural Competency Training Model For The Public Health Workforce: Public Health Cares, Hana E. Hinkle Jan 2018

A Cultural Competency Training Model For The Public Health Workforce: Public Health Cares, Hana E. Hinkle

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Cultural competency training (CCT) programs are often used to train healthcare providers on the cultural needs and related healthcare disparities of patients. However, the current literature does not provide standardized best practice methods for CCT implementation, and CCT content is not consistent within healthcare disciplines and/or across disciplines (Beck & Boulton, 2012; Betancourt, Green, Carrillo, & Owusu Ananeh-Firempong, 2016; Crandall, George, Marion, & Davis, 2003; Lie, Lee-Rey, Gomez, Bereknyei, & Braddock, 2011). Additionally, current training programs do not typically address other factors of culturally appropriate care delivery in practice, such as provider bias. Current training programs also lack evaluation standards …

"It's Because You Are White": A Qualitative Study On The Impact Of Whiteness And White Privilege In Interracial Relationships, Adrienne Gruenes

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Previous research has produced numerous studies on the dynamics of interracial relationships. However, there is still a gap in the existing research concerning how whiteness and white privilege impacts interracial relationships. This qualitative study sought to examine how whiteness and white privilege impacts interracial relationships when one person in the relationship identifies as white and their partner identifies as a person of color. I conducted in-depth interviews with four interracial couples who had one person in the relationship that identified as white and their partner identified as a person of color. Each couple participated in a dyadic interview and then …

Effects Of Integrated And Independent Speaking Tasks On Learners' Interactional Performance, Yen Vo Jan 2018

Effects Of Integrated And Independent Speaking Tasks On Learners' Interactional Performance, Yen Vo

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Interaction has been considered an important element in second language acquisition (Long, 1983). Also, the ability to effectively and appropriately interact with others is one of the important sub-constructs of oral communication (Kramsch, 1986; Ockey & Li, 2015). Researchers in the field of language teaching have raised the importance of how different task types or task formats affect learners’ interaction. As a result, many efforts have been made for a better understanding of what task types/formats are more appropriate for promoting language acquisition as well as interactional ability. However, little has been done to investigate how integrated speaking tasks and …

Archiving Oral Histories: A Practical Guide For Practitioners And Their Collaborators, Jenna E. Nolt Jan 2018

Archiving Oral Histories: A Practical Guide For Practitioners And Their Collaborators, Jenna E. Nolt

Instructions, Forms, and Toolkits

This guide takes a technical approach to educating practitioners (faculty, students, local historians) about the collection, processing, hosting, access, and preservation of oral histories. These technical processes are a critical component to an oral history project because they provide the means to project, share, and distribute the important work narrators and interviewers do. Therefore this guide works in conjunction with other professional guides that emphasize the development of historically significant research questions, and the ethical and legal considerations of the project as a whole. A earlier version of this document was initially created for the Oral History in the Liberal …

Using Hashtags To Disambiguate Aboutness In Social Media Discourse: A Case Study Of #Orlandostrong, Nicholas Dearmas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While the field of writing studies has studied digital writing as a response to multiple calls for more research on digital forms of writing, research on hashtags has yet to build bridges between different disciplines' approaches to studying the uses and effects of hashtags. This dissertation builds that bridge in its interdisciplinary approach to the study of hashtags by focusing on how hashtags can be fully appreciated at the intersection of the fields of information research, linguistics, rhetoric, ethics, writing studies, new media studies, and discourse studies. Hashtags are writing innovations that perform unique digital functions rhetorically while still hearkening …

A Study Of Eeg Signature Associated With Emotional And Stress Responses Due To Cyberbullying, Ashraf Alhujailli Jan 2018

A Study Of Eeg Signature Associated With Emotional And Stress Responses Due To Cyberbullying, Ashraf Alhujailli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The human brain processes vital information regarding human feelings. Prior research has focused on the problems of underage bullying, workplace bullying, burnout, mobbing and, most recently, cyberbullying. Scholars have traditionally examined the adverse outcomes of cyberbullying using subjective measures of stress and emotion for decades. However, very few studies examined cyberbullying using objective measures like EEG. The main goal of this study was to explore the relationship between the brain's EEG, expressed by the power spectral density, and emotions and stress due to two types of cyberbullying, specifically: 1) social exclusion, and 2) verbal harassment. This research also examined how …
