Student Perceptions Of Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback In Developmental Multilingual Writing Classes, Kendon Kurzer Jan 2018

Student Perceptions Of Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback In Developmental Multilingual Writing Classes, Kendon Kurzer

Journal of Response to Writing

In this project, I investigated student perceptions of dynamic written corrective feedback (DWCF), a specific method of providing accuracy feedback, in developmental writing classes for multilingual students. Via a quasi-experimental design using treatment and control sections of a developmental writing program’s three levels, I collected and contrasted survey data from a total of 145 students. I then interviewed three students (one international and two generation 1.5) representing a range of perceptions of DWCF. Participants generally appreciated and valued DWCF, especially as a complement to a grammar textbook, and students of classes that used DWCF reported higher scores on most survey …

Computational Linguistics Techniques For The Study Of Ancient Languages, Peter Z. Revesz Jan 2018

Computational Linguistics Techniques For The Study Of Ancient Languages, Peter Z. Revesz

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

This paper presents a grammatical comparison of the Minoan language with the proto-Ugric and proto- Hungarian languages. Recent research showed that these languages are closely related, but this paper presents a novel grammatical comparison. The grammatical comparison shows the Minoan language to have an agglutinative type of grammar, with a CVCV type root word structure. The Minoan language also features assimilation between the word roots and the suffixes and a possessive phrase structure that is similar to that in Hungarian.

Justin Between Paul And The Heretics: The Salvation Of Christian Judaizers In The Dialogue With Trypho, Benjamin L. White Jan 2018

Justin Between Paul And The Heretics: The Salvation Of Christian Judaizers In The Dialogue With Trypho, Benjamin L. White

Publications

Justin Martyr makes the surprising concession in the Dialogue with Trypho 47 that Gentile Christians who convert as proselytes to Christ-believing Judaism “will likely be saved.” Given Justin’s larger project in the Dialogue of creating a Verus Israel distinct from historical Judaism, his admission of salvation to these ultimate Judaizers is hard to understand. The following article examines this fissure in his project by positioning Justin in tension between Paul and Marcion. Dialogue 47, which takes up the relationship between Christ-faith and the law, is shot through with the language of Galatians and Romans 14–15, and Justin tends in a …

Parental Broad Autism Phenotype And The Language Skills Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Michelle Flippin, Linda R. Watson Jan 2018

Parental Broad Autism Phenotype And The Language Skills Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Michelle Flippin, Linda R. Watson

Communicative Disorders Faculty Publications

Father–child and mother–child interactions were examined in order to investigate concurrent associations between three characteristics of parental broad autism phenotype (i.e., aloofness, rigidity, pragmatic language deficits), parental verbal responsiveness, and language skills of children with ASD. Results for mothers indicated that aloofness and rigidity were negatively associated with both child-initiated engagement and child language skills. Maternal aloofness was also negatively correlated with verbal responsiveness to their children, but rigidity was not. Results suggest that the association between aloofness and child language are potentially mediated by maternal use of responsive verbal behaviors. Maternal pragmatic language deficits were not concurrently related to …

Language Politics And The Constitution Of Racialized Subjects In The Corinthian Church, Ekaputra Tupamahu Jan 2018

Language Politics And The Constitution Of Racialized Subjects In The Corinthian Church, Ekaputra Tupamahu

Faculty Publications - Portland Seminary

This study examines the phenomenon of speaking in tongue(s) in the Corinthian church from the point of view of the politics of language. Instead of seeing tongue(s) as a problem of unintelligible-ecstatic speech, it reconsiders this phenomenon as a linguistic struggle. Tongue(s), in this sense, is a multilingual social dynamic that Paul perceives as chaotic. Special attention is given to the role of language as one of the crucial markers of the ancient Greeks’ collective identity. The barbarians are their imaginative and discursive ‘others’ who do not share their language. It is within this sociopolitical context that the employment of …

Changing Critics’ Criticisms Of Book Of Mormon Changes, Brian C. Hales Jan 2018

Changing Critics’ Criticisms Of Book Of Mormon Changes, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In early 1830 Joseph Smith published the Book of Mormon, a 269,938-word volume that discusses religious themes intermingled with a history of ancient American peoples.1 Claiming it was scripture like the Bible,2 in 1841 he declared it to be “the most correct of any book on earth and the keystone of our religion.”3 Yet, many changes in the text of the Book of Mormon can be detected when comparing the original manuscript to the version available today. These changes have served as a lightning rod for some critics who imply that a divinely inspired book should not require any alterations. …

The Status Of Women In Old Testament Marriage, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2018

The Status Of Women In Old Testament Marriage, Noel B. Reynolds

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In his book Marriage as a Covenant, author Gordon Paul Hugenberger begins with the late 20th century Bible-studies insight that in Israel, covenants were devices used to make binding on unrelated persons the same obligations blood relatives owed to each other. So by covenant, marriage partners became one bone and flesh. This thorough study of the Hebrew Bible and related literatures argues that the view of marriage as a covenant in Malachi 2:10‒16 echoes the first marriage in Genesis 2 and is consistent with the other passages in the Bible that have often been mistakenly interpreted to promote a patriarchalist …

Is The Book Of Mormon A Pseudo-Archaic Text?, Standford Carmack Jan 2018

Is The Book Of Mormon A Pseudo-Archaic Text?, Standford Carmack

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In recent years the Book of Mormon has been compared to pseudo-biblical texts like Gilbert J. Hunt’s The Late War (1816). Some have found strong linguistic correspondence and declared that there is an authorial relationship. However, comparative linguistic studies performed to date have focused on data with low probative value vis-à-vis the question of authorship. What has been lacking is non-trivial descriptive linguistic analysis that focuses on less contextual and more complex types of data, such as syntax and morphosyntax (grammatical features such as verb agreement and inflection), as well as data less obviously biblical and/or less susceptible to conscious …

“Swearing By Their Everlasting Maker”: Some Notes On Paanchi And Giddianhi, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2018

“Swearing By Their Everlasting Maker”: Some Notes On Paanchi And Giddianhi, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This brief article explores Paanchi and Giddianhi as names evidencing the Egyptian onomastic element –anchi/anhi/ʿnḫ(i) and the potential literary significance of these two names in the context of Mormon’s narrative detailing the formation of the oath-bound secret combinations sworn with oath-formulae upon one’s “life” (cf. Egyptian ʿnḫ, “life”; “live”; “swear an oath [by one’s life]”). It also explores the implications for Mormon’s telling of Nephite history during his own time.

Marjorie Newton’S Account Of The Faith Of The Māori Saints: A Critical Appraisal, Louis Midgley Jan 2018

Marjorie Newton’S Account Of The Faith Of The Māori Saints: A Critical Appraisal, Louis Midgley

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Marjorie Newton’s Mormon and Maori is a version of her 1998 thesis in which she rejects key elements of the Māori Latter day Saint historical narrative. This contrasts with her earlier, faith affirming Tiki and Temple. In Mormon and Maori Newton targets what she sees as Māori/missionary mythology. She has written for different audiences; one was for secular religious studies scholars, while the other was for faithful Saints. Midgley rejects Newton’s claim that a Mormon American cultural imperialism requires Māori to abandon noble elements of their culture. Faithful Saints are liberated from the soul-destroying behavior that results from the loss …

Why Globalization Matters, J W. Terry Jan 2018

Why Globalization Matters, J W. Terry

Proceedings: 2018 Global Voices on the University of Dayton Campus

Globalization is a choice; inclusivity is also a choice. When you have privilege or power, you can choose what you like and what you don’t like. People tend to associate with what they value. That is fine; however, the problem exists in the question of “why do we value what we value?” I would argue that your values have been shaped by the media, false or incomplete historical narratives, and of course your upbringing. Therefore, your values have been skewed by factors like racism, white supremacy, simple stereotypes.

Insane Clown Posse And The Liminal World Of Carnival, Class, And Juggalo Family, Magdalene Taylor Jan 2018

Insane Clown Posse And The Liminal World Of Carnival, Class, And Juggalo Family, Magdalene Taylor

Theses & ETDs

This thesis is an analysis of the boundaries of Juggalos, the subcultural following of the rap group Insane Clown Posse. Analyzing lyrics, documentaries, Juggalo media and qualitative data collected at the 18th annual music festival The Gathering of the Juggalos, I explore the ways in which the subculture utilizes subcultural capital and “badges of dignity” to negotiate with boundaries of class identity. I focus on three major themes: the function of the carnivalesque and horror in creating a subcultural identity, the liberatory bonds of community and chosen-kin networks in Juggalo “family,” and the ways in which these two themes work …

Beyond Words: Poetic Authority And Voice In The Works Of Claudia Rankine And John Taggart, Azia Keever Jan 2018

Beyond Words: Poetic Authority And Voice In The Works Of Claudia Rankine And John Taggart, Azia Keever

Theses & ETDs

The lyric voice has been historically used as a stand-in for the internal voice. Two poets, Claudia Rankine and John Taggart, engage this narrative of the lyric voice in a way that calls into question the sources of individual voice. They accomplish this reimagining of the voice through authority inherent in the vocal aspect in poetry. For Rankine, this can be seen in her two American lyrics Don’t Let Me Be Lonely (2004) and Citizen (2014). Rankine exploits the conventions of speech we take for granted to unveil the sources of the voice. For Taggart, his use of the voice …

Writing Self-Efficacy And Collaboration In Undergraduate Thesis Students, Anne Virginia Magee Jan 2018

Writing Self-Efficacy And Collaboration In Undergraduate Thesis Students, Anne Virginia Magee

Theses & ETDs

Academic self-efficacy (ASE) and its offshoot Writing self-efficacy (WSE) have been shown in the literature to be significant predictors of student performance and confidence in a variety of contexts. As a result, promoting students’ WSE should be an institutional concern, especially in the case of difficult, consequential tasks. Much research has been done developing tools and tactics for students to improve their WSE, many of which include interpersonal and collaborative intervention. This study attempted to find a correlation between collaboration and WSE in undergraduate seniors who were engaged in a long-term thesis. Data were collected at four points during the …

The Inexorable Picture Of Language: Grammar, Meaning, Function, And An Interdisciplinary Upheaval Of Paradigms In Theoretical Linguistics, Sabrina Finn Jan 2018

The Inexorable Picture Of Language: Grammar, Meaning, Function, And An Interdisciplinary Upheaval Of Paradigms In Theoretical Linguistics, Sabrina Finn

Theses & ETDs

What is the nature of language? For more than 60 years, the answer to this question has been drawn from Noam Chomsky’s theory of linguistics, which treats the usage of linguistic structures in a speech community as irrelevant to its purpose, acquisition, and form. But by contrast, contemporary research in philosophy, anthropology, psychology, neuroscience, and linguistics suggests that the purpose, acquisition, and form of linguistic structures are necessarily linked to language’s function. In this project, I assert that functionality is a core property of language, and that the problems faced by the transformationalgenerative theories of language are the result of …

Identity Dissonance And Power Sharing: Institutional Mechanisms For Mitigating Counter-State Violence, Matthew Kirchman Jan 2018

Identity Dissonance And Power Sharing: Institutional Mechanisms For Mitigating Counter-State Violence, Matthew Kirchman

Theses & ETDs

One of the most significant trends in modern political history is the reduced prevalence of traditional interstate wars and concurrent spike in the number and intensity of non-international armed conflicts (NIACs). In particular, NIACs based in a contestation of identity between the state and its constituent national communities pose an important question to academics and policymakers: how can top-down institutional reforms reconcile group differences in order to forge a stronger, more unified state identity and reduce the potential for violent conflict? This paper posits that differences in the underlying causes – termed “proximate identity crises” – of such conflicts influence …

Phenomenological Ethics: Virtues Of The Body In Its Sexual Existence, Jessica Brown Jan 2018

Phenomenological Ethics: Virtues Of The Body In Its Sexual Existence, Jessica Brown

Theses & ETDs

This thesis looks at the question of sexual ethics and asks, “how do we have an ethical relationship?” After detailing issues and dissatisfactions with contemporary consent issues, the author proposes a shift in the conversation towards a relational dynamic theory incorporating the body through phenomenological virtue ethics. Recognition requires that we see another simultaneously as a being like and unlike us— as similarity and alterity in the unique being of another, as dynamic potentiality in relation to our own unique being. Reciprocity is an asymmetrical phenomena which must be content laden and considerate of fairness and justice in terms of …

Wittgenstein's Coffee: An Exploration Of Food/Art, Conceptual Art, And Context, Miranda Gale Jan 2018

Wittgenstein's Coffee: An Exploration Of Food/Art, Conceptual Art, And Context, Miranda Gale

Theses & ETDs

The philosophy of food is an expansive topic, but most people recognize it for its contributions to ethics rather than aesthetics. Examining the potential categorization of food as art leads to a fuller understanding of art on its own terms, especially within a twentieth/twenty-first century, post-Duchampian context. Conceptual art in particular builds on a framework that espouses the concept as a medium, rejects a purely visual aesthetic, and blurs lines of form and content. Emphasizing context, conceptual artists--some of whom work with food as a medium--reject most of the categories that exclude food from art. In sketching a philosophically-informed art …

Mathematical Linguistics: The Pumping Lemma And Classification Of Natural Languages, Naimul Chowdhury Jan 2018

Mathematical Linguistics: The Pumping Lemma And Classification Of Natural Languages, Naimul Chowdhury

Theses & ETDs

This thesis surveys topics in Formal Language Theory and Automata Theory. Our goal is to exposit concepts like Regular, Context-Free, and Tree-Adjoining languages, and their associated grammars and automata. This area of mathematics arose out of an interest to classify and describe families of artificial languages. Linguists also exploited these results to shed light on the structure of natural languages. In the course of this exposition we mainly explore several theorems colloquially known as the Pumping Lemmata, which mainly serve as tools to prove that certain languages are not members of a class of languages. Each pumping lemma asserts that …

A Comparative Analysis: Recapture Rates Of The Blacktip Shark (Carcharhinus Limbatus) In The Noaa Gulfspan Survey (2000-2016) And The Terra Ceia Bay And Sarasota Bay, Florida Study (2017), Justina Mei-Jing Bernard

Theses & ETDs

Elasmobranchs, known as the cartilaginous fishes and including sharks, skates, and rays, play a critical role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Through tag-recapture studies, many factors that influence the population model for elasmobranch populations can be investigated to monitor the health of a fish stock. A triple tagging method was used, where the tertiary tag was a triangular notch punched in the first dorsal fin of the shark to provide indication for whether it was part of the 2017 in the case of tag shedding. This study didn’t find a significant difference between the recapture rates of blacktip sharks captured …

Art, Abuse, And Anger Exploring Traumatic Memory, Ariel Sartori Amsberry Jan 2018

Art, Abuse, And Anger Exploring Traumatic Memory, Ariel Sartori Amsberry

Theses & ETDs

Life is full of boundaries which are essential guidelines into developing a healthy personal lifestyle. Healthy interactions between people are the ones where people recognize and respect the boundaries that individuals have. We develop boundaries in as an empathetic response to interactions and as we have experiences they become central to who we are and our own interpersonal relationships. It is these experiences that shape our memory and how we will interact with people in future endeavors. However, in cases of domestic abuse and relationship violence these boundaries have been violated. These experiences become memories which will not be healthy …

You’Ve Got To Be Joking: An English Translation Of The Philogelos, Annie Mccabe Jan 2018

You’Ve Got To Be Joking: An English Translation Of The Philogelos, Annie Mccabe

Theses & ETDs

The first ‘joke book’ was the Ancient Greek text Philogelos. It was composed in fourth century Rome, circulated over the course of several centuries, and remains largely intact in the modern day. As a peripheral text, it has been the subject of only sporadic research, translation, commentary and analysis until the later half of the twentieth century. This thesis offers a complete English translation of the Greek text with brief contextual and cultural commentary, as well as a historical overview of Greek and Roman humorous expression. The subject matter of the Philogelos bears resemblance to the social comedy of Greek …
