Cultural Gentrification: Hip-Hop & Racial Epistemologies In The United States, Miles Iton
Cultural Gentrification: Hip-Hop & Racial Epistemologies In The United States, Miles Iton
Theses & ETDs
The purpose of this thesis is twofold. The first is to synthesize my four years of academic instruction in philosophy with contemporary social theories (from both academic and non-academic but culturally relevant sources) in order to create the term “cultural gentrification.” In the context of cultural gentrification, I examine hip-hop as a music genre and subculture pertinent to contemporary representations of blackness in American society and subcultures. The second is to examine the intersections between hip-hop performance and contemporary avenues of identity expression in order to draw conclusions toward hip-hop’s relationship to both blackness and cultural gentrification. I do so …
The Radical And Mystical Space Of Marginalized Motherhood: Reimagining And Redefining The Immaculata And Multi-Media Installation, Body With A Heart Shaped Face, Bree Nieves
Theses & ETDs
This thesis analyzes representations of and ideals about motherhood using Patricia Hill Collin’s theories about the “Hegemonic Domain,” one of four interrelated domains of power in society. Motherhood is both a constructed pedagogical system and a place for radical love and creativity. In this thesis, I focus on the Christian history of motherhood and analyze the authority that Church fathers give to the Virgin Mary through biblical references and images. I focus on the misreading of biblical scripture and argue for the necessity to reimagine and rework time-worn constructs of motherhood. I also discuss the Genesis account, Christian biological assumptions …
A Resume Audit Study Of The Software Industry, With Automation Prototypes, Eric Voorhis
A Resume Audit Study Of The Software Industry, With Automation Prototypes, Eric Voorhis
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the topic of social discrimination in the United States of America's technology industry with an emphasis on occupations related to the development of software products. Reported employment statistics provide clear evidence that the technology industry as a whole is lacking diversity. This lack of diversity is mentioned at the core of many reports and surveys about discriminatory treatment or harassment within companies. The sparse representation of minorities, low retention rates, first-hand reports, and general surveys of discriminatory treatment and harassment shows us that many of these work environments, occupied by predominantly cis white men, drive away minorities …
Blurred Lines: Sexual Consent In Popular Music Lyrics, Robin Lindsley
Blurred Lines: Sexual Consent In Popular Music Lyrics, Robin Lindsley
Theses & ETDs
This study examines the extent to which the lyrics of popular music portray sexual consent and beliefs and behaviors that contribute to the reproduction of rape culture. Using content analysis, I explore the top 20 U.S. Billboard songs each year from 2013-2017 (n=100). Based on the selected definitions of sexual consent and rape culture, the lyrics were coded for explicit and implicit mentions of sex, asking/telling consent, assumed consent, coercion, objectification, being overcome with lust, alcohol, and drugs.,. Chi-square tests demonstrated a significant correlation between the presence of sex in a song being accompanied by alcohol, assumed consent, coercion, drugs, …
“Self-Indulgent Nonsense”: Why Academics Write Badly And Why It Matters, Liliana Solomon
“Self-Indulgent Nonsense”: Why Academics Write Badly And Why It Matters, Liliana Solomon
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I discuss the long-standing trend of academics writing inaccessibly, and explore the consequences of this writing for academics and the general public. In Chapter One, I review the most cited and trusted texts about writing to establish a basis for “good” and “bad” writing, and provide a brief history of how academic writing came to be so “bad.” In Chapter Two, I explore the tangible consequences of bad academic writing in high school, undergrad, postgrad, and beyond. In Chapter Three, I take on the project of “translating” and “rewriting” three prime examples of inaccessible academic writing, to …
Bacterial Endosymbiont Wolbachia: Infection And Horizontal Transfer In Local Pollinators, Meagan Ash
Bacterial Endosymbiont Wolbachia: Infection And Horizontal Transfer In Local Pollinators, Meagan Ash
Theses & ETDs
The bacterial endosymbiont Wolbachia is a potential threat to its endangered pollinator hosts. Wolbachia alters reproduction in its hosts in several ways that could threaten small or endangered populations. This threat could be perpetuated by horizontal transfer, yet the mechanisms and frequency of such transfers remains unknown. Understanding patterns of Wolbachia infection and relation at the community level can help in evaluating the potential for horizontal transfer. Local common pollinators were captured, tested for Wolbachia, and sequenced at the Multi-Locus Sequence Typing genes. These sequences were used to investigate the genetic relationships of the Wolbachia with external Wolbachia sequences and …
“Canada Is The Essence Of Not Being”: A Study Of Rural Voting In Canada, Mollie Saumier
“Canada Is The Essence Of Not Being”: A Study Of Rural Voting In Canada, Mollie Saumier
Theses & ETDs
In the United States, increasing attention has been paid to the urban and rural divide. Some scholars have explained this difference in attitudes by region as the “politics of resentment,” or as an “empathy wall”. Residents in rural areas feel politically excluded, and without access to the resources enjoyed by urbanites, leading to an affinity for anti-government, conservative candidates. One might expect Canadians to illustrate a similar pattern of rural resentment. This study addresses rural consciousness, along with the importance of trust in framing vote choice and applies it to Canadian politics. In using the 2011 Comparative Provincial Election Project, …
The Blade Of Witchcraft: The Construction Of Evil As The Flawed Occam’S Razor Of Feminine Spirituality In The Middle Ages, Conner Nicole Cherniak
The Blade Of Witchcraft: The Construction Of Evil As The Flawed Occam’S Razor Of Feminine Spirituality In The Middle Ages, Conner Nicole Cherniak
Theses & ETDs
Upon discovering the medieval text, Malleus Maleficarum , a witchcraft treatise written by Heinrich Kramer in 1485, I found that a witch is not characterized by broomstick-flying or concoction-brewing. The methodology Kramer utilizes for his witch hunt mirrors the new inquisitional structure of the sacrament of confession introduced at the Fourth Council of the Lateran in 1215, which came to be utilized in the early Christian church to keep heresy in check by monitoring church-goers’ devotion to God. What the Malleus Maleficarum revealed to me about witches and their “craft” lies in the necessary nature of the witch as an …
“Your Body Must Be Heard”: Explorations Of Feminine Writing In Three Works Of Experimental Feminist Literature, Katia Diamon-Sagias
“Your Body Must Be Heard”: Explorations Of Feminine Writing In Three Works Of Experimental Feminist Literature, Katia Diamon-Sagias
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores feminine writing, or écriture féminine, through the analysis of three experimental works of feminine literature: Hour of the Star by Clarice Lispector, Book of Promethea by Helene Cixous, and Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson. I posit that feminine writing can be a productive lens for analyzing these and other works, while these works in turn provide a “way in” to thinking about feminine writing. I begin by outlining the important qualities of feminine writing as a “process” of both writing and reading. My first chapter focuses in Lispector’s Hour of the Star, which follows the …
Dostoevsky And The Problem Of Microcosm Bakhtin, “Bobok” And “The Dream Of A Ridiculous Man”, Michael Pulsifer
Dostoevsky And The Problem Of Microcosm Bakhtin, “Bobok” And “The Dream Of A Ridiculous Man”, Michael Pulsifer
Theses & ETDs
In Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics, Mikhail Bakhtin singles out Dostoevsky’s short story “Bobok” as “almost a microcosm of his entire creative output” (144). Following this, Bakhtin writes that the short story “The Dream of a Ridiculous Man” is “practically a complete encyclopedia of Dostoevsky’s most important themes” (150). In this thesis, I argue that these stories present two sides of a contending ideological coin in Dostoevsky: i.e. the idea that “everything is permitted,” which “Bobok” depicts, and the idea of “responsibility for all,” as encapsulated by “The Dream of a Ridiculous Man.” Furthermore, I read these stories as concrete and …

The Impact On Student Achievement Through Principals' Interactions With Others, Matthew L. Widenhoefer
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of the quantitative study was to examine how principals impact student achievement through their interactions with others. The study sought to determine the effectiveness of specific interactions of principals on transforming teaching practices for improved student test scores. A second area of study examined whether principals have the ability to strengthen and improve student achievement within their schools and identify interactions and instructional approaches that are employed to improve student-learning outcomes. Approaches include the use of professional development to help teachers hone their classroom instruction. Topics included differentiated instruction, multiple intelligence theory, and increased engagement and expectations. …

Let It Flow: Increasing Occupation-Centered Practice In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Patrick D. Robbins
Let It Flow: Increasing Occupation-Centered Practice In Skilled Nursing Facilities, Patrick D. Robbins
MOT Student Capstones
The purpose of this study was to use the Kawa Model to discover and analyze the performance of the occupational therapy profession to incorporate occupation-centered practice in the skilled nursing setting. The guiding questions of the Kawa Model were used to guide phenomenological research inquiry into literature sources to generate drawings of the historical and current aspects of occupation-centered practice in the SNF setting. Environmental restrictions and obstacles from multiple sources were identified to prevent the implementation of occupation-centered services, while professional skills and values were identified with potential to initiate change in current practice trends. Two possible strategies for …

Schoolgirl Embroideries: Integrating Indigenous Motifs, Materials, And Text, Lynne Anderson
Schoolgirl Embroideries: Integrating Indigenous Motifs, Materials, And Text, Lynne Anderson
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Hand embroidery was an integral part of female education in Europe, America, and their colonized territories until the late 19th century. All girls embroidered at least one sampler and many stitched more than one. Because needlework was part of the school’s curriculum; a sampler’s composition, technique, and text communicate a great deal about the teacher’s goals, as well as community and family expectations, including those of indigenous students. This presentation explores ways in which indigenous motifs, materials, and text were integrated into schoolgirl samplers and other girlhood embroideries, leaving visible evidence of cross-cultural accommodations. Motifs are recurring patterns or …

Modeling The Relationship Between Women’S Perceptions And Future Intention To Use Institutional Maternity Care In The Western Highlands Of Guatemala, Emily Peca, John Sandberg
Modeling The Relationship Between Women’S Perceptions And Future Intention To Use Institutional Maternity Care In The Western Highlands Of Guatemala, Emily Peca, John Sandberg
Global Health Faculty Publications
Background
Despite global gains, women in hard-to-reach areas are at a relatively higher risk of death and disability related to childbirth. Traditional methods of measuring satisfaction may mask negative experiences (such as disrespect and abuse) that can drive down demand for institutional care. Better measurement of women’s perceptions of care quality, especially among marginalized populations with historically low utilization of institutional care, are needed to inform how to improve services and foster greater utilization of (potentially life-saving) clinical care.
Methods
A population-based household survey was conducted in 15 purposively selected villages in the rural Western Highlands of Guatemala among women …
Incorporating Indian Education: An Educational Tool For Including Native Voices In Classrooms, Ramona Kitto Stately
Incorporating Indian Education: An Educational Tool For Including Native Voices In Classrooms, Ramona Kitto Stately
Theses and Graduate Projects
As an Indian Education teacher and program coordinator in Minnesota, I found it interesting that so many teachers contact our Department for lessons and speakers. I realized that many teachers did not learn Minnesota Indian History as it is revealing itself today with more accurate and authentic voices. Teacher need some guidance to find clear narratives and class lessons to be able to teach the true history of all Minnesotans. I was hoping to scaffold some good resources with teachers and to help bridge the gap to some missing historical information.
The Use Of Offensive Language By Middle School Students In The Special Education Classroom: Student And Staff Perspectives, Matthew Francis Hillis Byrnes
The Use Of Offensive Language By Middle School Students In The Special Education Classroom: Student And Staff Perspectives, Matthew Francis Hillis Byrnes
Theses and Graduate Projects
Students'use of offensive language often leads to behavioral problems, such as fights, that impede learning in the classroom environment. Through comparing and contrasting the perspectives of students and staff in a program for middle school students with emotional and/or behavioral disorders, this research seeks to understand why students use offensive language. Both students and staffwere interviewed. The students were sixth and eighth graders who spend 60-100% of their time in school in a special education classroom. The staff who were interviewed include special education teachers, an educational assistant, a teacher in the mainstream program, and a school psychologist. All of …

Using Visual “Bait” To Hook, Engage, And Empower New Community College Writers, Nicola Blake
Using Visual “Bait” To Hook, Engage, And Empower New Community College Writers, Nicola Blake
Publications and Research
This reflective article focuses on a series of semester-long activities conducted with developmental writers in an urban community college classroom. It builds on the research of John Berger (1972) and Sondra Perl (1994) who highlight seeing and perception as key components of self-composition. The article showcases assignments where students created photo journals as a way to share their lives, thoughts, and experiences. The use of structured prompts allowed students to actively engage with their neighborhoods -- a sort of text to be read, captured, and ultimately decoded through written explanation. The examples will be useful to practitioners who may be …
A Phenomenological Examination Of Latina Mother's Perceptions About Academic Success For Their Kindergarten Children, Shelly Lang Reggiani
A Phenomenological Examination Of Latina Mother's Perceptions About Academic Success For Their Kindergarten Children, Shelly Lang Reggiani
Doctor of Education (EdD)
This phenomenological qualitative study aspired to learn from the personal stories of three Latina mothers regarding their perceptions of academic success for their young kindergarten-aged children and what they do to foster and encourage that success. Each of the participants was a Spanish-speaking, first-generation immigrant from Mexico. Their Spanishspeaking children were English learners who attended Kindergarten at the same Title I elementary school and who scored higher than their English-speaking peers on the Oregon Kindergarten Assessment in the areas of in the areas of self-regulation and interpersonal skills. This study used in-depth interviews to explore the mothers’ lived experiences around …
