Trauma and Acute Care Articles
Objective Cortical bone trajectory pedicle screws (CBT) have a different trajectory compared to traditional pedicle screws (PS) and they may confer biomechanical advantages in some patient populations. We hypothesize that the placement of CBT in traumatic thoracolumbar fractures could be an alternative technique to the traditional utilization of PS. Methods Single surgeon, retrospective study was performed at a Level 1 Trauma Center from 2013 to 2017. All patients aged between 18 and 90 years with operative AO classification A, B, and C traumatic thoracolumbar fractures were included. Patients with pathological fractures, active spinal infections, or history of vertebral augmentation were …
Chemical Investigation Of Bioactive Marine Extracts, Selam Hagos
Chemical Investigation Of Bioactive Marine Extracts, Selam Hagos
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Natural products have been a fundamental source of medicinal scaffolds for decades; with sixty percent of marketed drugs. Many synthetic chemists are focused on synthesizing potent and nontoxic compounds for pharmaceutical targets, however, nature is still proving to be a source of new bioactive compounds. Produced by the host organism for defense, reproduction and communication, secondary metabolites also demonstrate promising bioactivity against human pathogens. Hence, natural product chemists continue their quest for new leads.
As a continuation of these efforts, this thesis attempts to explore fungi and sponges for new chemistry, and ultimately, new drug candidates. Antarctica is largely untapped; …

Managing Forest Disease Spread With Tangible Participatory Models, Devon Gaydos, Anna Petrasova, Vaclav Petras, Richard Cobb, Ross Meentemeyer
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Forest diseases fundamentally diminish the health and functioning of our valuable forest resources. Landscape-scale management efforts to reduce disease spread are a priority but can be fraught with questions about how best to allocate limited resources. Management efforts can be greatly enhanced by spatiotemporal models of disease spread which allow the comparison of alternative scenarios. In many cases, however, models are developed without user-friendly interfaces or consideration of stakeholder motivations, fueling a knowledge-practice gap where better science has not necessarily lead to better management. Tangible Landscape, an open-source participatory modeling tool, has been designed to address this challenge. Stakeholders can …

Formulation Of An Approach For Integrating Earth Observations, Climate Forecasting And Land-Surface Modelling In Order To Predict Outbreaks Of Dengue Fever And Zika Virus In Vietnam, Quillon Harpham, Darren Lumbroso, Gina Tsarouchi
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Dengue fever occurs in 141 countries with 122,000 cases reported in Vietnam in 2016. The epidemiological situation there has been worsened by the failure of health systems to maintain adequate control of the species of mosquito that spread dengue. Several studies have emphasised the significant links between weather variability and infectious diseases, highlighting the potential for developing early warning systems for epidemics. The same methods could also be used to forecast outbreaks of zika, which has recently begun to be reported in Vietnam.
This presentation describes the results of a study, supported by the UK Space Agency, resulting in a …

Computational Insights Into The Structures, Mechanisms, And Chemical Properties Of Metal Complexes, Enzymes, And Bio-Molecules, Thomas J. Paul
Open Access Dissertations
In this thesis, we have focus on the following three projects: (1) the inhibition of amyloid beta aggregation, (2) structural and mechanical properties of amyloid peptides, and (3) complex biological systems of molecular recognition pertaining to hydrolysis. In the first project, we have looked at the inhibition of early and late forms of Aß peptides using heparin derived disaccharides, small molecules, and a Rhenium centered photoluminescence probe. We have determined and characterized the most relevant binding sites of these complexes to both the monomeric and fibrillar forms of the Aß peptide. Currently, the aggregation of biomolecules has been implicated in …

Variation in immune gene sequences is known to influence resistance to infectious diseases and parasites, and hence survival and mate choice, across animal taxa. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) comprise one essential gene family in the vertebrate innate immune system and recognize evolutionarily conserved structures from all major microorganism classes. However, the causes and consequences of TLR variation in passerine birds remain largely unexplored. We examined 7 TLR genes in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia), a species that is studied across North America. We then examined sequences from 4 unduplicated TLRs (TLR1LB, TLR3, TLR4, and TLR15) from birds in 2 parts of the …

Density And Pond Habitat Affect Survival And Growth Rates In Larval Columbia Spotted Frogs (Rana Luteiventris), Sidney A. Patchett, Allystair D. Jones, Mark C. Belk
Western North American Naturalist
Juvenile survival and growth are critical determinants of evolutionary fitness in most organisms. However, specific effects of population density and habitat quality on survival and growth of larvae vary widely among amphibian species. The Columbia spotted frog (Rana luteiventris), like many amphibians in the arid western United States, is a species of conservation concern, especially in the southern part of its range. To determine how density and habitat affect vital rates of Columbia spotted frog during the larval period, we performed a controlled experiment. Larval growth and survival in the Columbia spotted frog are determined by density of …

1. White‐nose syndrome (WNS), affecting multiple North American bat species during the hibernation period, is a highly pathogenic disease caused by the psychrophilic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd). Because the fungal pathogen persists in the hibernation site environment independently of the hosts, previous theory on spatial disease dynamics cannot predict WNS epidemics. However, the ability to understand factors contributing to the spread of white‐nose syndrome (WNS) in North America is crucial to the management of infected and susceptible bat populations as well as the conservation of threatened and endangered bat species. 2. Utilizing recent theory on environmental opportunistic pathogens, we modelled …

Ethical Issues In Designing Interventions For Behavioural Change, Gyuchan Thomas Jun, Fernando Carvalho, Neil Sinclair
DRS Biennial Conference Series
This paper reflects on fundamental ethical issues concerning designing for behavioural change, in order to raise questions about the factors that should be considered by design practitioners when developing interventions. It draws on existing literature on philosophical ethics, moral psychology and design. It proposes a list of ethical questions and considerations to be made throughout the design process. A case study addressing behavioural changes in antibiotics prescriptions (for Urinary Tract Infections) was carried out to demonstrate how the ethical questions identified are asked and considered. We provide a framework for addressing these issues with the hope that it will help …

Synthesis Of Small Molecules That Target Metalloenzymes, Akram M. Hazeen
Doctoral Dissertations
Metalloenzymes have gained interest in drug development. In this study, small molecules with metal binding groups were synthesized to target two metalloenzymes: alkaline nuclease (UL12) that causes a viral infection resulted in the simplex herpes 1 disease. The other enzyme was E. colienolase which is essential for the survival of several pathogens. Three general motifs were modified in this study inspired from natural products. Tropolone was diversified through aminocarbonylation and cross coupling reaction with diethyl phosphite to provide a series of tropolone derivatives. Pyridone series which has two sites for diversifications was also prepared. The last series was based …

Malaysian Journal of Computing (MJoC)
This paper presents an analysis of PSIuIeTR type model, which are used to study the transmission dynamics of typhoid fever diseases in a population. Basic idea of typhoid fever disease transmission using compartmental modeling is discussed. Differential Transformation Method (DTM) is discussed in detail, which is used to compute the series solution of the non-linear system of differential equation governing the model equations. The validity of the (DTM) in solving the proposed model is established by classical fourth-order Runge-Kutta method which is implemented in Maple 18. Graphical results confirm that (DTM) is in good agreement with RK-4 and this produced …

The role of urgent care clinics in facilitating PrEP service for prevention in HIV is under-explored. There is a lack of guidelines for initiating PrEP in the UC setting which delivers care to an increasing number of individuals. A PrEP initiation protocol is crucial for use in the UC setting.
Borrelia Burgdorferi Invasion Of B Lymphocytes, Jacob Bailey, Richard Robinson
Borrelia Burgdorferi Invasion Of B Lymphocytes, Jacob Bailey, Richard Robinson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The goal of this project was to determine if Borrelia Burgdorferi’s linear plasmid 36 is required for intracellular localization in B lymphocytes. A more complete understanding of the intracellular localization of B. burgdorferi may provide the means to effective Lyme treatment. It has been proposed that intracellular localization of Lyme spirochetes may be, at least in part, responsible for Post Treatment Lyme Disease. As the spirochetes are safe within human cells, Borrelia are able to evade host immune system responses and be protected from antibiotic treatment. A more complete understanding of the intracellular localization of B. burgdorferi may provide the …

Sankara, Adam Weiss, Jeffrey Stanaway, Ellen Goldberg, David M. Pigott, Heidi Larson, Stein Emil Vollset, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
Background: The objective of this study was to document the worldwide decline of dracunculiasis (Guinea worm disease, GWD) burden, expressed as disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), from 1990 to 2016, as estimated in the Global Burden of Disease study 2016 (GBD 2016). While the annual number of cases of GWD have been consistently reported by WHO since the 1990s, the burden of disability due to GWD has not previously been quantified in GBD.
Methods: The incidence of GWD was modeled for each endemic country using annual national case reports. A literature search was conducted to characterize the presentation of GWD, translate …
