School of Medicine Publications

Stimuli-responsive nanocarriers have attracted increased attention as materials that can facilitate drug and gene delivery in cancer therapy. The present study reports the development of redox-sensitive dendrimersomes comprising disulfide-linked cholesterol-bearing PEGylated dendrimers, which can be used as drug and gene delivery systems. Two disulfide-linked cholesterol-bearing PEGylated generation 3 diaminobutyric polypropylenimine dendrimers have been successfully synthesized via an in situ two-step reaction. They were able to spontaneously self-assemble into stable, cationic, nanosized vesicles (or dendrimersomes) with lower critical aggregation concentration values for high-cholesterol-bearing vesicles. These dendrimersomes were able to entrap both hydrophilic and hydrophobic dyes, and they also showed a redox-responsive …

Putting Words In Your Mouth: The Evidentiary Impact Of Emerging Voice Editing Software, Nicholas Mirra Nov 2018

Putting Words In Your Mouth: The Evidentiary Impact Of Emerging Voice Editing Software, Nicholas Mirra

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

All you have in this life is your word. The human voice serves as the carrier for our words, thoughts, and feelings; each of us is imparted with a unique voice that allows us to be identified amongst a group. Our voice is our vocal finger print. Every word which departs from our lips carries an exclusive trademark which identifies those words as belonging to an individual. Because individuality of voice is a phenomenon implicitly understood by all humans, our words have become intertwined with our identity. As a result of this interconnection between voice and identity, voice recordings and …

Developmental Parameters Of A Southern Mountain Pine Beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) Population Reveal Potential Source Of Latitudinal Differences In Generation Time, Anne E. Mcmanis, James A. Powell, Barbara J. Bentz

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae, Hopkins) is a major disturbance agent in pine ecosystems of western North America. Adaptation to local climates has resulted in primarily univoltine generation time across a thermally diverse latitudinal gradient. We hypothesized that voltinism patterns have been shaped by selection for slower developmental rates in southern populations inhabiting warmer climates. To investigate traits responsible for latitudinal differences we measured lifestage-specific development of southern mountain pine beetle eggs, larvae and pupae across a range of temperatures. Developmental rate curves were fit using maximum posterior likelihood estimation with a Bayesian prior to improve fit stability. …

Background

Wheelchair biomechanics research advances accessibility and clinical care for manual wheelchair users. Standardized outcome assessments are vital tools for tracking progress, but there is a strong need for more quantitative methods. A system offering kinematic, quantitative detection, with the ease of use of a standardized outcome assessment, would be optimal for repeated, longitudinal assessment of manual wheelchair users’ therapeutic progress, but has yet to be offered.

Results

This work evaluates a markerless motion analysis system for manual wheelchair mobility in clinical, community, and home settings. This system includes Microsoft® Kinect® 2.0 sensors, OpenSim musculoskeletal modeling, and an automated detection, …

Public Health Emergency Preparedness: Globalizing Risk, Localizing Threats, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Infectious diseases are a constant reality, yet it takes a shock to jolt the public’s attention and spur political action. The past weeks saw such as a shock at busy US airports, with the emergency quarantine of 3 flights. At the same time, seemingly a world away, insecurity, weak health systems, and distrust are fueling a second major Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) this year. Yet reacting to periodic shocks won’t safeguard our collective future. Emergency preparedness requires proactive planning and funding, with US leadership pivotal.

The Continuing Relevance Of C. Wright Mills: His Approach To Research And What We Can Learn From It, John E. Miller Nov 2018

The Continuing Relevance Of C. Wright Mills: His Approach To Research And What We Can Learn From It, John E. Miller

Studies in Midwestern History

C. Wright Mills (1916-1962), remembered primarily for his 1956 book, The Power Elite, and for his 1960 essay “Letter to the New Left,” which helped launch the rising New Left in the America of the 1960s, was a major American sociologist, but he also had much to teach historians. Although he focused his research on national and global subjects, students and scholars of regionalism can also learn much from his wide-ranging, critical approach. Like all good sociologists, Mills always assumed that historical context was an essential element of any adequate analysis of society, economics, and politics. Born in Texas, …

The Relationship Between School Climate And Teacher Self-Efficacy In A Rural Virginia School System, Paige Lacks, Scott B. Watson Nov 2018

The Relationship Between School Climate And Teacher Self-Efficacy In A Rural Virginia School System, Paige Lacks, Scott B. Watson

School Leadership Review

School climate is one of the most significant factors in solidifying an effective learning environment. In today’s complex educational system, leaders face daily challenges in the world of high stakes testing and state accreditation that force them to ensure that they have implemented reforms that will provide sustained improvement in student achievement. As a result, school leaders and teachers must possess the ability to change and adapt to their conditions for continuous organizational improvement despite possible resistance from stakeholders. Moreover, with diverse teacher experience levels, leaders consistently assess and evaluate the instructional practices in their building to empower teachers to …

Orotic Aciduria, Aliah L. Fonteh Nov 2018

Orotic Aciduria, Aliah L. Fonteh

Fidei et Veritatis: The Liberty University Journal of Graduate Research

Orotic acid is an intermediate found in the pathway for pyrimidine synthesis. The mitochondrial enzyme dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) catalyzes the production of orotic acid by the conversion of the compound dihydroorotate to orotic acid. Orotic acid is commonly produced by this reaction in erythrocytes, hepatocytes, and kidney cells. Chemical modification of orotic acid in the pyrimidine pathway will generate nucleotides involved in DNA and RNA synthesis. Orotic aciduria can occur as a secondary manifestation due to a defect in an enzyme or transporter within the urea cycle, due to competitive inhibition by anti-cancer drugs such as allopurinol and 6-azauridine, or …

Use Of Hearing Protection In Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Patients: A Systematic Review Of The Evidence, Nathalie Chouery, Kathleen T. Dunckley

Journal of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention

Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) settings present neonates with many environmental hazards, including exposure to dangerous sound intensity levels. Noise levels in NICUs worldwide overwhelmingly exceed the recommendations for safe exposure by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Environmental modifications and staff behavioral changes have proved ineffective to sufficiently reduce infant noise exposure. A systematic review of the literature was undertaken to answer if earmuffs improves physiologic stability, behavioral response, and sleep behavior, which are markers of stress response in NICU patients. Seven databases were searched for pertinent records using a specific search protocol. Seven studies met the review’s inclusion criteria …
