President Trump, The New Chicago School And The Future Of Environmental Law And Scholarship, Sarah B. Schindler Nov 2018

President Trump, The New Chicago School And The Future Of Environmental Law And Scholarship, Sarah B. Schindler

Faculty Publications

Recent presidents including Bill Clinton, G. W. Bush, and Barack Obama have refined how environmental law has been enacted and carried out. Under President Trump, the scope of public environmental law will most certainly narrow. It seems likely that the future of environmental law will depend not upon traditional federal command-and-control legislation or executive branch maneuvering, but instead upon activating environmentalism through expanded substantive areas and innovative regulatory techniques that fall outside the existing, traditional norms of environmental law and legal scholarship. This chapter is an attempt to acknowledge this monumental change, recognizing that these barriers to traditional environmental regulation …

Our understanding of radiation-induced cellular damage has greatly improved over the past few decades. Despite this progress, there are still many obstacles to fully understand how radiation interacts with biologically relevant cellular components, such as DNA, to cause observable end points such as cell killing. Damage in DNA is identified as a major route of cell killing. One hurdle when modeling biological effects is the difficulty in directly comparing results generated by members of different research groups. Multiple Monte Carlo codes have been developed to simulate damage induction at the DNA scale, while at the same time various groups have …

Marketing and International Business Faculty Research

This research explores the mediating effects of product returnson the relationship between a firm's green capabilities and its adoption of closed-loop supply chain. Green capability is characterized in terms of product recovery, supply chain integration, and environmentally friendly manufacturing. A structural equation model using survey data drawn from ISO 14001 certified manufacturers in Malaysia is used to test the research hypotheses. The results reveal that recovery and integration capabilities positively influence product returns, while manufacturing and integration capabilities and product returns influence closed loop supply chain adoption. The results also indicate that the volume, type, timing, and quality of product …

Challenging Hazards Amidst Observational Simulation In The Emergency Department: Advancing Gamification In Simulation Education Through A Novel Resident-Led Skills Competition., Nicholas Salerno, Dimitrios Papanagnou, Priyha Mahesh, Kaitlin M Bowers, Scott H Pasichow, Sara Paradise, Xiao Chi Zhang

Medical Education Articles

Medical simulation competitions have become an increasingly popular method to provide a hands-on "gamified" approach to education and training in the health professions. The most well-known competition, SimWars, consists of well-coordinated teams that are tasked with completing a series of mind-bending clinical scenarios in front of a live audience through 'bracket-style' elimination rounds. Similarly, challenging hazards amidst observational simulation (CHAOS) in the emergency department (ED) is another novel approach to gamification in both its structure and feel. Conducted at the Council of Emergency Medicine Resident Directors (CORD) 2018 National Assembly in San Antonio, Texas, instead of assigning premeditated teams, it …

An Investigation Of Conformality Of The Core-Shell Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (Pem) Fuel Cell Catalysts By Sputter Deposition, Mesut Yurukcu Nov 2018

An Investigation Of Conformality Of The Core-Shell Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (Pem) Fuel Cell Catalysts By Sputter Deposition, Mesut Yurukcu

Theses and Dissertations

Core-shell nanorod array geometry can offer enhanced durability for polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell electrodes if a catalyst shell is conformally coated around the nanorod support base. Uniform catalyst shell coating can minimize the interaction of acidic fuel cell medium with the nanorod base and can improve the overall electrocatalyst electrode stability. However, fabrication of the conformal shell layers on nanorod arrays using physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods (e.g. sputtering, thermal evaporation) has been a formidable task. In order to assess the PVD conditions for the production of conformal shell coatings, Monte Carlo simulation methods (MC) can provide useful …

The Impact Of Prior-Prior Year On Federal Student Aid Eligibility, Valerie A. Mockus Nov 2018

The Impact Of Prior-Prior Year On Federal Student Aid Eligibility, Valerie A. Mockus

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Each year, millions of Americans complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in hopes of securing federal, state, and institutional funding to support their educational goals. The FAFSA recently changed the age of tax data used to determine eligibility for aid, including the Federal Pell Grant—eligibility for which is often used as a proxy for students with the highest need. This study includes a comprehensive review of the extant literature on the subject of prior-prior year. It is also the first look into the actual impact of the recent shift from Prior Year (PY) tax information to Prior-Prior …

An Investigation Of Implicit Theories Of Well-Being, Optimism, And Coping Mechanism Selection, Megan L. Tracy, Matthew D. Branneman Nov 2018

An Investigation Of Implicit Theories Of Well-Being, Optimism, And Coping Mechanism Selection, Megan L. Tracy, Matthew D. Branneman

Modern Psychological Studies

Folkman and Lazarus (1991) argue that incremental theorists have more faith in their ability to alter situations and would be more likely to select active coping strategies (Hong et al., 1999). An optimistic worldview may also have important implications for the way people choose to cope (Aspinwall & Taylor, 1992). Using the MTurk online platform, the present study investigated the relationship between implicit personality theories (IPT), optimism, and coping mechanism selection. As hypothesized, incremental beliefs were associated with more optimism. However, they were also associated with a greater likelihood of using self-blame, which is typically conceptualized as a passive coping …

Gaslighting, Cofabulation, And Epistemic Innocence, Andrew Spear Nov 2018

Gaslighting, Cofabulation, And Epistemic Innocence, Andrew Spear

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Recent literature on epistemic innocence develops the idea that a defective cognitive process may nevertheless merit special consideration insofar as it confers an epistemic benefit that would not otherwise be available. For example, confabulation may be epistemically innocent when it makes a subject more likely to form future true beliefs or helps her maintain a coherent self-concept. I consider the role of confabulation in typical cases of interpersonal gaslighting, and argue that confabulation will not be epistemically innocent in such cases even if it does preserve a coherent self-concept or belief-set for the subject. Analyzing the role of confabulation in …

The concentration of nitrogen oxides (NOx) plays a central role in controlling air quality. On a global scale, the primary sink of NOx is oxidation to form HNO3. Gas-phase HNO3 photolyses slowly with a lifetime in the troposphere of 10 days or more. However, several recent studies examining HONO chemistry have proposed that particle-phase HNO3 undergoes photolysis 10–300 times more rapidly than gas-phase HNO3. We present here constraints on the rate of particle-phase HNO3 photolysis based on observations of NOx and HNO3 collected over the Yellow Sea during the KORUS-AQ study in summer 2016. The fastest proposed photolysis rates are …

Cannabis sativa is widely cultivated for medicinal, food, industrial, and recreational use, but much remains unknown regarding its genetics, including the molecular determinants of cannabinoid content. Here, we describe a combined physical and genetic map derived from a cross between the drug-type strain Purple Kush and the hemp variety “Finola.” The map reveals that cannabinoid biosynthesis genes are generally unlinked but that aromatic prenyltransferase (AP), which produces the substrate for THCA and CBDA synthases (THCAS and CBDAS), is tightly linked to a known marker for total cannabinoid content. We further identify the gene encoding CBCA synthase (CBCAS …

Heart Rate Variability Analysis As A Means Of Real-Time Hypercapnia Detection, Joseph Dituri

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The motivation for this research is the high prevalence experienced by divers of carbon dioxide (CO2) issues and concerns throughout their lives. Additionally, CO2 is naturally occurring, the product of oxidative metabolism, and is undetectable to human senses. Current CO2 sensor or detection technology is limited to high-cost machines such as arterial blood gas monitors and end tidal CO2 monitors, or more modern technology relying upon bright lights which measure blood flow. The light technology is notoriously unreliable and does not produce a very effective heart beat allowing a user to detect minimal changes. Heart …

Judgments Of Lethal Risk: A Comparison Of Visual And Narrative Stimuli, Derek Anthony Bonniksen Nov 2018

Judgments Of Lethal Risk: A Comparison Of Visual And Narrative Stimuli, Derek Anthony Bonniksen

Dissertations and Theses

The nature of how we make judgments has received a great deal of attention in the last few decades. Risk communication research has indicated that risk-related messages can elicit affective responses in audiences, which can then have a significant impact on how such audiences judge risk in general. Using a 2 x 2 between-subjects factorial design, this study found that, contrary to Johnson and Tversky's (1983) findings, presenting narratives about lethal risk does not influence readers' judgments about the frequency that risks occur, nor do such narratives influence participant worry levels about the lethal risks, more generally. Additionally, the inclusion …

Mutant Ubqln2p497h In Motor Neurons Leads To Als-Like Phenotypes And Defective Autophagy In Rats, Tianhong Chen, Bo Huang, Xinglong Shi, Limo Gao, Cao Huang

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Mutations in ubiquilin2 (UBQLN2) have been linked to abnormal protein aggregation in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The mechanisms underlying UBQLN2-related neurodegenerative diseases remain unclear. Using a tetracycline-regulated gene expression system, the ALS-linked UBQLN2P497H mutant was selectively expressed in either the spinal motor neurons or astrocytes in rats. We found that selectively expressing mutant UBQLN2P497H in the spinal motor neurons caused several core features of ALS, including the progressive degeneration of motor neurons, the denervation atrophy of skeletal muscles, and the abnormal protein accumulation. Furthermore, mutant UBQLN2P497H accumulation was associated with an age-dependent decrease in several core autophagy-related proteins. ALS-like phenotypes …

Negotiating My Rainbow: A Self-Study Exploring The Relationship Between Beliefs About Identity And Classroom Practice, Amanda Colborne Nov 2018

Negotiating My Rainbow: A Self-Study Exploring The Relationship Between Beliefs About Identity And Classroom Practice, Amanda Colborne

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Teachers bring parts of themselves, among them, gender, age, and race into the classroom. In addition to the routine stress of teaching, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have the added stress of managing the expression of their sexual orientation in the classroom. This study explores the ways in which my own identity as a lesbian influenced my beliefs about teaching, my “pre-active” curricular-instructional decision-making, and my “interactive” curricular-instructional decision-making (Jackson, 1966). A self-study methodology is used to explore these relationships. Data sources include journaling, lesson plan artifacts, student work samples, photographs of my classroom, an observation and critical …
