Aiming For Success: Evaluating Statistical And Machine Learning Methods To Predict High School Student Performance And Improve Early Warning Systems, David Alexandro
Aiming For Success: Evaluating Statistical And Machine Learning Methods To Predict High School Student Performance And Improve Early Warning Systems, David Alexandro
Doctoral Dissertations
In response to the high school dropout crisis, which comes with great economic and social costs, early warning systems (EWSs) have been developed to systematically predict and improve student outcomes. The purpose of this study is to evaluate different statistical and machine learning methods to predict high school student performance and improve EWSs. By improving education EWSs, this study aims to better identify those students in need of targeted support and inform on-the-ground practitioners who may intervene long before students may be dropping out.
The current study explores the aforementioned methods in the context of a cohort of 40,008 Connecticut …

The Mediating Effects Of Product Returns On The Relationship Between Green Capabilities And Closed-Loop Supply Chain Adoption, Mohd R. Shaharudin, Keah Choon Tan, Vijay R. Kannan, Suhaiza Zailani
Management Faculty Publications
This research explores the mediating effects of product returns on the relationship between a firm’s green capabilities and its adoption of closed-loop supply chain. Green capability is characterized in terms of product recovery, supply chain integration, and environmentally friendly manufacturing. A structural equation model using survey data drawn from ISO 14001 certified manufacturers in Malaysia is used to test the research hypotheses. The results reveal that recovery and integration capabilities positively influence product returns, while manufacturing and integration capabilities and product returns influence closed loop supply chain adoption. The results also indicate that the volume, type, timing, and quality of …

Nutrition Risk Among An Ethnically Diverse Sample Of Community-Dwelling Older Adults, Patricia M. Sheean, Isabel C. Farrar, Suela Sulo, Jamie Partridge, Linda Schiffer, Marian Fitzgibbon
Nursing: School of Nursing Faculty Publications and Other Works
Objective
To assess the prevalence of nutritional risk among an ethnically diverse group of urban community-dwelling older adults and to explore if risk varied by race/ethnicity.
Design
Demographic characteristics, Katz’s activities of daily living and health-care resource utilization were ascertained cross-sectionally via telephone surveys with trained interviewers. Nutrition risk and nutrition symptomology were assessed via the abridged Patient Generated Subjective Global Assessment (abPG-SGA); scores of ≥6 points delineated ‘high’ nutrition risk. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analyses were conducted.
Setting
Urban.
Participants
White, Black or Hispanic community-dwelling adults, ≥55 years of age, fluent in English or Spanish, residing in the …

Engaging Students In Fundamental Biological Concepts Through Un Sustainability Goals, Sowmya Anjur, Donald Dosch
Faculty Publications & Research
Advanced Biological Systems is year-long introductory biology course for Juniors at IMSA. It is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development goals, the use of which has been identified as an initiative for curriculum development. These goals help to bring purpose to students’ learning. We have identified three of the seventeen goals as guideposts for our curriculum. These are clean water and sanitation, sustainable cities and communities, and good health and well-being. In this presentation, we will share our curriculum development process and examples of instruction linked to these UN goals.

The Mediating Role Of Health Consciousness In The Relation Between Emotional Intelligence And Health Behaviors, Adriana Espinosa, Selma Kadic-Maglajlic
The Mediating Role Of Health Consciousness In The Relation Between Emotional Intelligence And Health Behaviors, Adriana Espinosa, Selma Kadic-Maglajlic
Publications and Research
The goals of this study were to identify groups of health-related behaviors among young adults (N = 314, Mage = 21.94, SD = 6.53), gauge the relation between emotional intelligence and health behaviors in this population, and assess health consciousness as mediator of said relation. Latent class analysis identified two mutually exclusive health behavior groups, which according to response patterns were labeled as Healthy and Unhealthy. The Healthy group(56%)was composed of individuals who had a healthy diet (i.e.,low fat and high fiber),exercised regularly, and who frequently engaged in behaviors that prevent oral and skin-related diseases. In contrast, the Unhealthy group (44%) rarely …

Effects Of Inter-Stimulus Interval On Speech-Evoked Frequency-Following Response In Elderly Adults, Dongxin Liu, Jiong Hu, Ruijuan Dong, Jing Chen, Gabriella Musacchia, Shuo Wang
All Faculty Scholarship
Background: The speech-evoked frequency following response (FFR) has shown to be useful in assessing complex auditory processing abilities and in different age groups. While many aspects of FFR have been studied extensively, the effect of timing, as measured by inter-stimulus-interval (ISI), especially in the older adult population, has yet to be thoroughly investigated. Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of different ISIs on speech evoked FFR in older and younger adults who speak a tonal language, and to investigate whether the older adults’ FFR were more susceptible to the change in ISI. Materials and Methods: …

Novel antibiotics are urgently needed. The troponoids [tropones, tropolones, and α-hydroxytropolones (α-HT)] can have anti-bacterial activity. We synthesized or purchased 92 troponoids and evaluated their antibacterial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Preliminary hits were assessed for minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC80) and cytotoxicity (CC50) against human hepatoma cells. Sixteen troponoids inhibited S. aureus/E. coli/ A. baumannii growth by ≥80% growth at <30 >μM with CC50 values >50 μM. Two selected tropolones (63 and 285) inhibited 18 methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains with similar MIC80 values as against a reference strain. Two selected thiotropolones (284 and 363) …30>

Changes In Self-Sufficiency In Beef And Pork In Selected Central And Eastern Europe Markets, Sebastian Kubala
Changes In Self-Sufficiency In Beef And Pork In Selected Central And Eastern Europe Markets, Sebastian Kubala
European Management Studies
Food self-sufficiency is considered a priority for modern economies. The meat market is among the most developed food markets in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. Their accession to the European Union opened up new markets to producers, while raising competition levels. The aim of the article is to assess the level of self-sufficiency in beef and pork in selected countries of Central and Eastern Europe in 2005-2017. Simplified indicators of food self-sufficiency were used, with focus on measures of technical and economic self-sufficiency. Technical self-sufficiency was measured on the basis of the volume of foreign trade; the amount …

This study examined the factors influencing water-based recreationists' perceptions of support and opposition towards off-shore wind energy development (OWD) on Lake Erie. Much of the proposed or future Lake Erie OWD infrastructure may either be within or adjacent to public lands, waters, and protected areas, raising concerns about the potential environmental and social impacts upon recreation stakeholders. The limited body of OWD research within the United States has suggested there are numerous factors that may influence overall perceptions of support and opposition such as political orientation and beliefs in climate change. Moreover, recent research has proposed that the perceived recreation …

Hurricane Florence battered North Carolina’s coastal areas in September with 90-mph winds, rainfall and storm surge. Record flooding in Pender County forced officials to close the local hospital and its emergency department. However, three days after the powerful storm made landfall, the MED-1 Mobile Hospital from Atrium Health in Charlotte, N.C., was operating in a parking lot in Burgaw, N.C.
