Bridging The Gap Of Age And Awkwardness: Improving Geriatric Sex Education, Anne Watson
Bridging The Gap Of Age And Awkwardness: Improving Geriatric Sex Education, Anne Watson
University Honors Program
Improving geriatric sex education is not a common thought for many Americans, but with a quickly growing population it may soon become a common topic for discussion. Discomfort, awkwardness, and lack of communication often keep health care providers and physicians from discussing sexual health with their elderly patients. These limitations are significantly impairing physicians and health care providers from educating their patients about their sexual health and addressing any concern the patient might have about their sexuality. Sexual health in geriatrics is a growing concern among many health care fields today as the elderly are participating in risky sexual behaviors …

Relationships Between Neuronal Birthdates And Tonotopic Positions In The Mouse Cochlear Nucleus, Austin R. Shepard, Jennifer L. Scheffel, Wei-Ming Yu
Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Tonotopy is a key anatomical feature of the vertebrate auditory system, but little is known about the mechanisms underlying its development. Since date of birth of a neuron correlates with tonotopic position in the cochlea, we investigated if it also correlates with tonotopic position in the cochlear nucleus (CN). In the cochlea, spiral ganglion neurons are organized in a basal to apical progression along the length of the cochlea based on birthdates, with neurons in the base (responding to high‐frequency sounds) born early around mouse embryonic day (E) 9.5–10.5, and those in the apex (responding to low‐frequency sounds) born late …
Measuring Progress From 1990 To 2017 And Projecting Attainment To 2030 Of The Health-Related Sustainable Development Goals For 195 Countries And Territories: A Systematic Analysis For The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2017, Ali S. Akanda, Et Al
Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
Background: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of “leaving no one behind”, it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017), we measured progress on 41 of 52 health-related SDG indicators and estimated the health-related SDG index for 195 countries and territories for the period 1990–2017, projected indicators to 2030, and …
“I Tried Hard To Control My Temper”: Perceptions Of Older Musicians In Intergenerational Collaboration, Andrew Sutherland
“I Tried Hard To Control My Temper”: Perceptions Of Older Musicians In Intergenerational Collaboration, Andrew Sutherland
The Qualitative Report
Combining choirs for a large-scale performance can be rewarding. If the choirs comprise different generations, differing vocal timbres can add musical possibilities. A school in London operates two choirs in partnership: one for adult members of the school community and a student choir. They perform large-scale works together regularly. Interviews were undertaken with adults to understand their experience of the partnership. Frequently research explores students’ engagement but rarely are the views of adults sought. Intergenerational music-making involves challenges such as participants working collaboratively and not in competition. Participants in this case study discuss the impact of singing in a choir …

Interview Protocol Refinement: Fine-Tuning Qualitative Research Interview Questions For Multi-Racial Populations In Malaysia, May Luu Yeong, Rosnah Ismail, Noor Hassim Ismail, Mohd. Isa Hamzah
The Qualitative Report
A reliable interview protocol is the key to obtain good quality interview data. However, developing a valid interview protocol is not a simple task, especially for beginner-level researchers. Extensive understanding of the research topic is no guarantee to quality interview findings because many other factors may affect the interview process. In our study among injured workers in Malaysia, researchers face additional challenge of interviewing multi-ethnic and multi-cultural study population. Most of them are also from lower socioeconomic status and education level. The objective of this study is to refine the pre-constructed interview protocol to address these challenges for valid data …

Axial Compressive Behavior Of Square Ice Filled Steel Tubular Stub Columns, Yanlei Wang, Guipeng Chen, Baolin Wan, Hao Lin
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Concrete has many limitations in the building construction in cold areas. However, there is abundant ice in those regions. Therefore, using ice as a substitute for concrete has been explored by researchers. Inspired by the idea of square concrete filled steel tube (CFT), a new column form termed square ice filled steel tubular (IFT) column is proposed in this study. It consists of a square outer steel tube with the inner space filled with ice. A total of eighteen stub columns were made and tested under axial compression, including three circular plain ice specimens, nine square IFT specimens and six …

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite with global incidence. The acute infection, toxoplasmosis, is treatable but current regimens have poor host tolerance and no cure has been found for latent infections. This work builds upon a previous high throughput screen which identified benzoquinone acyl hydrazone (KG8) as the most promising compound; KG8 displayed potent in vitro activity against T. gondii but only marginal in vivoefficacy in a T. gondii animal model. To define the potential of this new lead compound, we now describe a baseline structure-activity relationship for this chemotype. Several derivatives displayed IC50's comparable …

Breast tumors reprogram their cellular metabolism, nutrient uptake, and utilization-associated biochemical processes. These processes become further transformed as genetically predisposed metastatic breast tumor cells colonize specific organs. Breast tumor cells often metastasize to the brain, bone, lung and liver. Massagué and colleagues isolated organotropic subclones and established organ-specific gene signatures associated with lung-, bone-, and brain-specific metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) MDA-MB-231 cells. Using these genetically characterized metastatic subclones specific to lung (LM4175), bone (BoM1833), and brain (BrM-2a), we evaluated marine natural products for the ability to differentially suppress metastatic breast cancer cells in a target organ-dependent manner. Psammaplin-based histone …

PVSRIPO, a variant of the poliovirus, is a revolutionary virus that demonstrates key characteristics for oncolytic virotherapy due to its ability to attack glioblastomas. The first criteria that PVSRIPO demonstrates is tumor-targeting tropism. PVSRIPO binds to nectin-like molecule 5 (Necl-5), a poliovirus receptor (PVR), found on different types of cancers such as lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and glioblastomas. This allows the virus to have a high binding affinity to tumor cells. Secondly, after modifying the poliovirus by substituting its internal ribosome entry site (IRES) with the Human Rhinovirus 2's (HRV2) IRES, the poliovirus becomes PVSRIPO, an attenuated version of the …

A multimodal micro-computed tomography (CT) and multi-spectral structured light imaging (SLI) system is introduced and systematically analyzed to test its feasibility to aid in margin delineation during breast conserving surgery (BCS). Phantom analysis of the micro-CT yielded a signal-to-noise ratio of 34, a contrast of 1.64, and a minimum detectable resolution of 240 ?m for a 1.2?min scan. The SLI system, spanning wavelengths 490?nm to 800?nm and spatial frequencies up to 1.37 , was evaluated with aqueous tissue simulating phantoms having variations in particle size distribution, scatter density, and blood volume fraction. The reduced scattering coefficient, and phase function …

The ‘Right’ Side Of Creativity: Creative Personality And Social Risk-Taking Predict Political Party Affiliation, V Tyagi, Y Hanoch, B Choma, Sl Denham
School of Psychology
Factors that predict political party affiliation are of particular importance in research due to the wider implications in politics and policy making. Extending this line of work, the idea that creativity predicts party affiliation was tested using 2 conceptualizations of creativity: creative personality and creative ideation. Participants (N = 406) based in the United States completed measures of creativity, socio-political attitudes, and domain specific risk-taking, and indicated their party affiliation. Results revealed a significant link between creative personality and political party affiliation. Furthermore, in addition to the socio-political attitudes, this link was explained, in part, by individuals’ social risk-taking. Specifically, …

Cohort studies and facility-based sentinel surveillance are common approaches to characterizing infectious disease burden, but present trade-offs; cohort studies are resource-intensive and may alter disease natural history, while sentinel surveillance underestimates incidence in the population. Hybrid surveillance, whereby facility-based surveillance is paired with a community-based healthcare utilization assessment, represents an alternative approach to generating population-based disease incidence estimates with moderate resource investments. Here, we discuss this method in the context of the Surveillance for Enteric Fever in Asia Project (SEAP) study. We describe how data are collected and utilized to adjust enteric fever incidence for blood culture sensitivity, facility-based enrollment, …

Barriers To Mental Health Service Access At A Large Public University, Auburn Beebe
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
College students are dealing with serious mental health issues and represent an important population to access when providing mental health services. Though most universities provide free mental health counseling services, many students are unaware or reluctant to use those services. Many factors contribute to this reluctance such as lack of knowledge about services and perceived stigma. Though many studies have shown that women are both diagnosed with anxiety and depression more often than men as well as seek mental health counseling more than men, few have identified the reasons for this disparity and examined the gender differences in collegiate men …

Vision Boards – Redefining Your Journey Through Visualization, Laura Marotta, Eleena Rioux
Violence Against Women conference
Women who have been through trauma, specifically violence or abusive situations, often feel a lack of control, which can permeate into their lives, even after post-treatment therapy and services. After a traumatic experience, we often need to retrain our brains and hearts by engaging with interests that are within our sphere of control. One of the most powerful activities that can aid in this transition is art-making. Making art can be a very personal, expressive, non-threatening and empowering experience. This workshop will take you through the journey of creating your own vision board, using basic art materials. Many start-ups and …

Violence Against Women conference
This paper is focused on research regarding the sexual grammar of the narrations of prostitution customers in Spain in relation to the work of anthropologist Rita Segato, with the purpose of understanding why men pay for sex. In order to understand the causes that articulate the “putero” narrative, the discourses of prostitution customers were analyzed through semi-structured in-depth interviews, group interviews, and discussion groups. The succession of socio-sexual paradigms in our country illuminates the comprehension of this phenomenon that places Spain as the European country with the highest rate of make prostitution consumption. The stories are classified in four categories: …

This paper examines the impact of a conditional cash transfer (CCT) program on girls’ early childhood survival in India. With a view to improve sex ratios and alleviate the status of girls, the Government of India launched the Dhan Lakshmi financial incentive scheme in 2008 in select districts of seven states. The program offers financial benefits to parents for raising daughters. Using district-level data from a large household survey, we analyze the program’s effect on sex ratios in the state of Punjab, which reports one of the most skewed sex ratios in the country. Results indicate a positive impact of …
