Expanding Magnetic Resonance Imaging Access For Patients With Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices, Rosalie Geronimo
Expanding Magnetic Resonance Imaging Access For Patients With Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Devices, Rosalie Geronimo
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
There are over two million patients in the United States that have cardiovascular implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). In 2017, the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) provided a consensus statement with guidelines and recommendations for device management of patients with magnetic resonance (MR) conditional as well as MR non-conditional CIEDs (Indik et al. 2017). In January 2018, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed that a qualified physician, nurse practitioner (NP), or physician assistant (PA) with expertise in implanted permanent pacemakers (PM), implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), cardiac resynchronization therapy pacemakers (CRT-P), or cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillators (CRT-D) must directly supervise …

Comparison Of Data Protection Laws In The United States Vs. The European Union, Trey Decker
Comparison Of Data Protection Laws In The United States Vs. The European Union, Trey Decker
University Honors Program
Data protection legislation is an area that has become more talked about in the current times in the United States. With the advent of the secret documents leaked by former intelligence analyst Edward Snowden, and the quick-to-follow data breaches of two major corporations, potentially affecting around 160 million Americans, the time to discuss and understand this topic is now. The in-depth understanding of US data protection laws present significant issues therein. There lie holes and fissures, as a matter of speaking, the framework that results in the lack of user protection. How then can these holes be mended, and what …
Improving Communication To Reduce Patient Falls In A 48-Bed Medical-Surgical Unit, Christian Gella
Improving Communication To Reduce Patient Falls In A 48-Bed Medical-Surgical Unit, Christian Gella
Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications
Abstract
Problem: Patient falls has been associated with increased morbidity, mortality and decreased quality of life. The increase in total patient falls for 2018 relative to 2017, and a spike of 10 patient falls for the month of June 2018 from a baseline of 5.3 falls per month has gained greater attention to reduce patient harm from falls while hospitalized. Prevention of falls minimizes patient exposure to the possibility of being injured. Despite efforts to curtail patient falls, improvement in communication is essential to address the safety issues surrounding improving quality of care practices, and consequentially reduce un-reimbursable hospital costs …
Differences In Leadership Behaviors Of Principals And Success In The School Turnaround Processes, Annette Lee
Differences In Leadership Behaviors Of Principals And Success In The School Turnaround Processes, Annette Lee
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine leadership behaviors of principals associated with public elementary schools that were either in the school turnaround process or had already transitioned out of school academic turnaround from 2011 through 2016. Transformational leadership guided the study to determine whether leadership behaviors differed among leaders of schools associated with academic failure. School accountability data were initially gathered through the Louisiana Department of Education website. Academically unsuccessful schools (AUS) were identified. Schools that were deemed failing at least one time during the 2012-2016 timeframe were grouped as follows: (a) Group A consisted of two schools …

Articles & Book Chapters
This article is based on a paper prepared for the convening of Over the Line: A Conversation about Race, Place, and the Environment, coordinated by In-grid Waldron; it was thus originally delivered in the context of a community of scholars interested and engaged in environmental justice (EJ) as well as anti-racism scholarship and activism. Conversations at the symposium were rich and deep, introducing novel ideas and generating a synergistic energy among those present. While this article builds upon the knowledge, experiences, and perspectives shared at the event, it also aims to introduce a distinct conception of Indigenous environmental justice (IEJ) …

Early Speech Deterioration In Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Case Study Of Newscaster Donna Britt, Emily Watkins
LSU Master's Theses
Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study is to detect and track speech changes using acoustic and perceptual measures in an individual (a local newscaster) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) using data from before her diagnosis, around the time of her diagnosis, and after her diagnosis.
Methods: Six time points, ranging from 37 months around her diagnosis, were analyzed from one speaker with ALS. Three acoustic parameters were measured: articulation rate, acoustic vowel space, and the slope of the second formant. Additionally, two experts with more than 10 years of experience perceptually analyzed the speech samples on 17 characteristics using …

The Spectacle Of The Bomb: Rhetorical Analysis Of Risk Of The Nevada Test Site In Technical Communication, Popular Press, And Pop Culture, Tiffany Wilgar
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is a rhetorical analysis of presentations of risk across three different sites of inquiry: technical communication, the popular press, and pop culture. This dissertation focuses on The Nevada Test Site (NTS), a nuclear testing facility near Las Vegas, Nevada, and analyzes presentations of risk in language of the technical report following an NTS accident in December 1970. Project Baneberry, a routine underground nuclear test, became the accident known as "The Baneberry Vent" when it cracked through the earth and vented into the atmosphere, exposing NTS employees and nearby communities to radiation. Presentations of risk in the technical document …
The Effects Of Organic And Conventional Agriculture On Bee Populations In The United States, Jordan Bicknell
The Effects Of Organic And Conventional Agriculture On Bee Populations In The United States, Jordan Bicknell
University Honors Theses
Farms depend heavily on bees to provide all or most of the pollination services for food production. Conventional agriculture poses multiple threats to these valuable organisms: habitat removal for large fields, the application of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, and the use of commercially-shipped bee colonies which can contain disease. In recent history, colony collapse disorder (CCD) has arisen in both scientific and public domains as a widespread concern for the environment and the “pollinator crisis” emerged as a result. Organic agriculture was developed in part, to mitigate the negative impacts conventional farming on the environment by prohibiting synthetic chemicals and …

Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency
Musical hallucinations are a relatively rare form of auditory hallucination characterized by hearing of music in the absence of any external stimuli. This phenomenon has been linked to both psychiatric and structural lesions. We present the case of a previously healthy young male whose presentation with musical hallucinations led to the diagnosis of a rare tumour, anaplastic pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma.
Flag State Performance And The Implementation Of Port State Control In The European Union - A Mixed Methods Approach, Armando Graziano
Flag State Performance And The Implementation Of Port State Control In The European Union - A Mixed Methods Approach, Armando Graziano
World Maritime University Ph.D. Dissertations
The implementation and enforcement of international maritime safety standards by Member States has always represented a key objective for both the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the European Commission (EC). In spite of a strong global legal framework for safety at sea, harmonisation has always been a challenge. Two points are relevant here: firstly, the level of implementation and enforcement with international regulations varies significantly among countries; secondly, it is a challenge to determine and/or quantify this level of compliance.
Several attempts have been made by the maritime industry, academic studies and policy-makers to develop an appropriate set of criteria …

Investigation Of Acetaminophen And Caffeine Removal Using Manganese Oxides And Granular Activated Carbon In Column Experiments, Rachael E. Miera
Investigation Of Acetaminophen And Caffeine Removal Using Manganese Oxides And Granular Activated Carbon In Column Experiments, Rachael E. Miera
Civil Engineering ETDs
This study was conducted to investigate the application of manganese dioxide (MnOx(s)) and granular activated carbon (GAC) media for the removal of the acetaminophen and caffeine. Treatment of emerging micropollutants has become a concern due to their effects on environmental health. Manganese oxides can be a viable alternative for water treatment due to their abundance in the environment. Laboratory scale flow through column experiments were performed using different combinations of commercial MnOx(s) and GAC to assess the removal of caffeine and acetaminophen, and the release of Mn due to the reductive dissolution of MnOx(s). Results …

Population And Fertility By Age And Sex For 195 Countries And Territories, 1950-2017: A Systematic Analysis For The Global Burden Of Disease Study 2017, Gbd 2017 Population And Fertility Collaborators, Paul Evan Kilgore
Department of Pharmacy Practice
Background Population estimates underpin demographic and epidemiological research and are used to track progress on numerous international indicators of health and development. To date, internationally available estimates of population and fertility, although useful, have not been produced with transparent and replicable methods and do not use standardised estimates of mortality. We present single-calendar year and single-year of age estimates of fertility and population by sex with standardised and replicable methods.
Methods We estimated population in 195 locations by single year of age and single calendar year from 1950 to 2017 with standardised and replicable methods. We based the estimates on …

Background: N-of-1 (individual comparison) trials are a promising approach for comparing the effectiveness of 2 or more treatments for individual patients; yet, few studies have qualitatively examined how patients use and make sense of their own patient-generated health data (PGHD) in the context of N-of-1 trials. Objective: The objective of our study was to explore chronic pain patients’ perceptions about the PGHD they compiled while comparing 2 chronic pain treatments and tracking their symptoms using a smartphone N-of-1 app in collaboration with their clinicians. Methods: Semistructured interviews were recorded with 33 patients, a consecutive subset of the intervention group in …
