Energy And Water Assessment And Plausibility Of Reuse Of Spent Caustic Solution In A Midwest Fluid Milk Processing Plant, Carly Rain Adams
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Food Energy and Water Nexus (FEW Nexus) is the inseparable connection linking these resources. The concept of the FEW Nexus within the food industry addresses the connection of water and energy as key members of food production. The steady increase in population and the increase in food demand are directly related, therefore, the need for water and energy. Immediately taking on this critical challenge will lead to tangible impacts on the water and energy crisis facing the food system. To reduce the distance between process productivity and resource efficiency it must first be determined, within food processing, where water …

Estimating Geographic Patterns Of Ophidism Risk In Ecuador, Carlos Yañez-Arenas, Luis Díaz-Gamboa, Carlos Patrón-Rivero, Kevin López-Reyes, Xavier Chiappa-Carrara
Neotropical Biodiversity
The species richness of venomous snakes in Ecuador (~39 species) is among the highest in the world. However, until now no information exists regarding geographic patterns of ophidism. In this study, we present a detailed spatial snakebite risk map which was built by stacking weighted ecological niche models of the 19 snake species responsible for the majority of Ecuador’s envenomation cases. Our weights were based on the proportion of cases reported for each species on local epidemiological studies. Based on our analyses, we identify 184 densely populated rural communities with high snakebite risk that should be monitored by health organizations. …
Interpretations Of Female Authority In Medieval Literature, Olivia Havlin
Interpretations Of Female Authority In Medieval Literature, Olivia Havlin
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Beginning with Romance of the Rose by Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun in 1269, Medieval authors give allegorical characteristics to women defining what a Medieval woman is, who she should be, and how she should behave. This text becomes a rule book on courtly love and male and female behavior lasting for centuries and is borrowed by authors like Geoffrey Chaucer, who used Romance of the Rose as a reference to question female authority in many of his works. Therefore, it is through an understanding of characters such as the Old Woman from The Romance of the Rose, …

Evaluation Of Hospital Soundscapes To Improve Patient And Staff Experience, Jay Bliefnick
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Hospital soundscapes can be difficult environments to assess acoustically due to the continuous activity within units. Routinely, patients perceive these soundscapes poorly when rating their hospital experience on HCAHPS (Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems) surveys administered after discharge. In addition, hospital staff can be negatively impacted by the acoustical environments in which they work, affecting both performance and job satisfaction. This doctoral research addressed these issues across three phases by collecting acoustical measurements within three individual hospitals, comparing results with provided patient and staff survey information, and conducting laboratory tests of hospital noise perception. In the first …

Acoustic Characteristics Of Ghanaian Ewe Accented American English, Prudence Barbara Deladem Mortoti
Student Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the acoustic characteristics that contribute to the perception of foreign-accentedness of English spoken by native Ewe speakers. Forty monosyllabic words spoken by four speakers were rated on accentedness by 109 participants; 51 with exposure to Ghanaian-accented-American English and 58 with none. The ratings and measurements of F1 and F2 values of the vowels were analyzed and compared. The results suggest that the perception of accentedness was influenced by the acoustic properties of vowels. Listeners rated L2 speakers as more accented than they did L1 speakers. Accentedness ratings did not correlate with comprehension of words, and finally, listeners …
