Letter Reversals In L2 Learners And The Link Between Letter Reversals And Phonemic Awareness Skills, Bayley Renee Politte

Student Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to find the prevalence of letter reversals in L2 students and a possible link between letter reversals and phonemic awareness skills. The participants were all bilingual children who spoke Spanish as their first language (L1) and English as their second language (L2). All participants were initially given a spelling test composed of words that contained letters that were often reversed. The spelling test was given to all participants prior to the Jordan Left-Right Reversals Test- Third Edition (JLRRT-3) (Jordan, 2011). The JLRRT-3 was standardized on both English and Spanish speaking children. The Dynamic Indicators …

Understanding Roles For Collaboration: Teacher And Speech-Language Pathologist, Brooke Myrick Nov 2018

Understanding Roles For Collaboration: Teacher And Speech-Language Pathologist, Brooke Myrick

Student Theses and Dissertations

This investigation sought to discover if graduating education students understood the role of a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and if they realized the opportunities for collaboration. This study was performed using a survey distributed to education students in their final year of study. The survey consisted of general questions about SLPs in school systems and questions about the two professions working together. The data collected revealed a positive attitude toward collaboration but an overall confusion of what SLPs do in public-school settings. These students who were set to begin their teaching careers within months of the survey did not understand the …

β-Glucan derived from cell walls of Candida albicans is a potent immune modulator. It has been shown to induce trained immunity in monocytes via epigenetic and metabolic reprogramming and to protect from lethal sepsis if applied prior to infection. Since β-glucan-trained monocytes have not been classified within the system of mononuclear phagocytes we analyzed these cells metabolically, phenotypically and functionally with a focus on monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation and compared them with naïve monocytes and other types of monocyte-derived cells such as classically (M1) or alternatively (M2) activated macrophages and monocyte-derived dendritic cells (moDCs). We show that β-glucan inhibits spontaneous apoptosis of …

Work-Related Skin Diseases Among Workers In The Sewing Section At Pt. X Shoe Company In West Java, Hendra Hendra, Eva Nirwana, Marzuki Isahak

Kesmas

Occupational skin diseases are the most common work-related diseases in many countries. Shoe industry workers are potential to be affected by work-related skin diseases (WRSDs). This study aimed to analyze the risk factors associated with WRSDs among workers in the sewing section at a shoe company in West Java. A total of 477 workers were examined and interviewed using the modified Nordic Occupational Skin Questionnaire-2002/LONG from May 2016 to July 2016. Chi-square test and logistic regression were used to analyze the risk factors related to WRSDs. The results showed that 57.7% of the workers suffered from WRSDs. Most of the …

High-density lipoprotein (HDL) have long been studied for their protective role against cardiovascular diseases, however recently relationship between HDL and cancer came into focus. Several epidemiological studies have shown an inverse correlation between HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) and cancer risk, and some have even implied that HDL-C can be used as a predictive measure for survival prognosis in for specific sub-population of certain types of cancer. HDL itself is an endogenous nanoparticle capable of removing excess cholesterol from the periphery and returning it to the liver for excretion. One of the main receptors for HDL, scavenger receptor type B-I (SR-BI), is highly …

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Deeper exploration of uncharacterized Gcn5-related N-acetyltransferases has the potential to expand our knowledge of the types of molecules that can be acylated by this important superfamily of enzymes and may offer new opportunities for biotechnological applications. While determining native or biologically relevant in vivo functions of uncharacterized proteins is ideal, their alternative or promiscuous in vitro capabilities provide insight into key active site interactions. Additionally, this knowledge can be exploited to selectively modify complex molecules and reduce byproducts when synthetic routes become challenging. During our exploration of uncharacterized Gcn5-related N-acetyltransferases from Pseudomonas aeruginosa, we identified such an …

Women Empowerment Or Disempowerment?: A Case Study Of A Social Microfinance’S Activities And Gender Relations In Rizal Province, Héritier Raphaël Mesa

Social Transformations Journal of the Global South

Women’s empowerment has been at the center of the development discourse as one of the eight declared Millennium Development Goals. To date, an increasing number of development organizations are focusing on helping poor women achieve economic sustainability, and social enterprise in its microfinance scheme is playing a leading role in providing women with needed capabilities to increase their agency in the development process. The success of microfinance in empowering women today has been a debatable subject in the economic and development realms, thus leading to a need to reassess some of the microfinance claims. How does it really empower women? …

The Data Breach Dilemma: Proactive Solutions For Protecting Consumers’ Personal Information, Daniel J. Marcus Nov 2018

The Data Breach Dilemma: Proactive Solutions For Protecting Consumers’ Personal Information, Daniel J. Marcus

Duke Law Journal

Data breaches are an increasingly common part of consumers’ lives. No institution is immune to the possibility of an attack. Each breach inevitably risks the release of consumers’ personally identifiable information and the strong possibility of identity theft.

Unfortunately, current solutions for handling these incidents are woefully inadequate. Private litigation like consumer class actions and shareholder lawsuits each face substantive legal and procedural barriers. States have their own data security and breach notification laws, but there is currently no unifying piece of legislation or strong enforcement mechanism.

This Note argues that proactive solutions are required. First, a national data security …
