Improving Genetic Prediction By Leveraging Genetic Correlations Among Human Diseases And Traits, Robert M. Maier, Zhihong Zhu, Sang Hong Lee, Maciej Trzaskowski, Ney Alliey Rodriguez

School of Medicine Publications

Genomic prediction has the potential to contribute to precision medicine. However, to date, the utility of such predictors is limited due to low accuracy for most traits. Here theory and simulation study are used to demonstrate that widespread pleiotropy among phenotypes can be utilised to improve genomic risk prediction. We show how a genetic predictor can be created as a weighted index that combines published genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics across many different traits. We apply this framework to predict risk of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in the Psychiatric Genomics consortium data, finding substantial heterogeneity in prediction accuracy increases …

School of Medicine Publications

Introduction

Pulmonary emphysema characterized by alveolar wall destruction is resultant of persistent chronic inflammation. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) has been reported to reverse elastase-induced emphysema in rats. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms are so far unknown.

Objective

To investigate the therapeutic potential effect of ATRA via the amelioration of the ERK/JAK-STAT pathways in the lungs of emphysematous rats.

Methods

In silico analysis was done to find the binding efficiency of ATRA with receptor and ligands of ERK & JAK-STAT pathway. Emphysema was induced by porcine pancreatic elastase in Sprague-Dawley rats and ATRA was supplemented as therapy. Lungs were harvested for …

Are We Overestimating Physical Activity Prevalence In Children?, L Price, K Wyatt, J Lloyd, C Abraham, Et Al Dec 2018

Are We Overestimating Physical Activity Prevalence In Children?, L Price, K Wyatt, J Lloyd, C Abraham, Et Al

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Physical activity guidelines state that children should achieve at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) on each day of the week. Accurate assessment of adherence to these guidelines should, ideally, include measurement over 7 days. When less than 7 days of data are available, researchers often report the average minutes of MVPA per day as a proxy for 7-day measurement. The aim of this study was to compare prevalence estimates generated by average MVPA per day versus MVPA assessed over 7 days. Methods: Data were collected as part of the Healthy Lifestyles Programme. One class …

Getting A Balance Between Generalisation And Specialisation In Mental Health Services: A Defence Of General Services, R Laugharne, M Thompson, A Srivastava, S Marlow, R Shankar Dec 2018

Getting A Balance Between Generalisation And Specialisation In Mental Health Services: A Defence Of General Services, R Laugharne, M Thompson, A Srivastava, S Marlow, R Shankar

Peninsula Medical School

Mental health services in the UK National Health Service have evolved to include primary-care generalist, secondary-care generalist and secondary-care specialist services. We argue that there continues to be an important role for the secondary-care generalists as they minimise interfaces, can live with diagnostic uncertainty and support continuity of care. The lack of commissioning and clinical boundaries in secondary-care generalist services can undermine their feasibility, leading to difficulties recruiting and retaining staff. There is a risk of a polo-mint service, where the specialist services on the edge are well resourced, but the secondary-care generalist services taking the greatest burden struggle to …

Conversation Analysis Of Veterinarians' Proposals For Long-Term Dietary Change In Companion Animal Practice In Ontario, Canada, Clare Macmartin, Hannah C. Wheat, Jason B. Coe, Cindy L. Adams

Peninsula Medical School

Nutritional changes recommended by veterinarians to clients can have a major role in animal-patient health. Although there is literature on best practices that can inform veterinary communication training, little is known specifically about how veterinarians communicate their recommendations to clients in real-life interactions. This study used the qualitative research method of conversation analysis to investigate the form and content of veterinarian-initiated proposals for long-term dietary change in canine and feline patients to further inform veterinary communication training. We analyzed the characteristics and design of veterinarian-initiated proposals for long-term nutritional modification as well as the appointment phases during which they occurred, …

The Value Of Problem-Based Learning In Learning For Sustainability: Undergraduate Accounting Student Perspectives, Ld Wyness, F Dalton Dec 2018

The Value Of Problem-Based Learning In Learning For Sustainability: Undergraduate Accounting Student Perspectives, Ld Wyness, F Dalton

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

This paper discusses the findings of a small ethnographic study that explored students’ perceptions of the value of problem-based learning in introducing sustainability, in a two semester elective accounting module at a post-1992 university in south-west England. Findings suggest that students believed that gaining knowledge of sustainability is essential for all accounting undergraduates, not just those who elect to follow a specialist module, and that problem-based learning is an appropriate and enabling method with which to introduce sustainability. It is also important for developing individual interest, building knowledge of various accounting, auditing, and reporting procedures, and motivating students. For those …

‘Commensality’ As A Theatre For Witnessing Change For Criminalised Individuals Working At A Resettlement Scheme., Julie M. Parsons Dec 2018

‘Commensality’ As A Theatre For Witnessing Change For Criminalised Individuals Working At A Resettlement Scheme., Julie M. Parsons

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This article draws on analysis of interview data from an exploratory case study at an independent ‘offender’ resettlement scheme in England, investigating the benefits or otherwise of commensality for criminalised individuals and the wider community who share a communal lunchtime meal. For prisoners released on temporary licence and others referred through probation, caught in the liminal space between criminal and civilian life, commensality enables social interaction with non-criminalised individuals in a social environment outside of the prison estate. It becomes an arena for the display of non-criminalised identities in preparation for release into the community after punishment. It is a …

A Qualitative Investigation Of The Degree Of Explainability Of Defeasible Argumentation And Non-Monotonic Fuzzy Reasoning, Lucas Rizzo, Luca Longo Dec 2018

A Qualitative Investigation Of The Degree Of Explainability Of Defeasible Argumentation And Non-Monotonic Fuzzy Reasoning, Lucas Rizzo, Luca Longo

Conference papers

Defeasible argumentation has advanced as a solid theoretical research discipline for inference under uncertainty. Scholars have predominantly focused on the construction of argument-based models for demonstrating non-monotonic reasoning adopting the notions of arguments and conflicts. However, they have marginally attempted to examine the degree of explainability that this approach can offer to explain inferences to humans in real-world applications. Model explanations are extremely important in areas such as medical diagnosis because they can increase human trustworthiness towards automatic inferences. In this research, the inferential processes of defeasible argumentation and non-monotonic fuzzy reasoning are meticulously described, exploited and qualitatively compared. A …

Peninsula Medical School

Telomere length is a risk factor in disease and the dynamics of telomere length are crucial to our understanding of cell replication and vitality. The proliferation of whole genome sequencing represents an unprecedented opportunity to glean new insights into telomere biology on a previously unimaginable scale. To this end, a number of approaches for estimating telomere length from whole-genome sequencing data have been proposed. Here we present Telomerecat, a novel approach to the estimation of telomere length. Previous methods have been dependent on the number of telomeres present in a cell being known, which may be problematic when analysing aneuploid …

An Economic Analysis Of Incentivized Positive Reviews, Jianqing Chen, Zhiling Guo, Jian Huang Dec 2018

An Economic Analysis Of Incentivized Positive Reviews, Jianqing Chen, Zhiling Guo, Jian Huang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

It becomes increasingly popular that some large online retailers such as Amazon open their platforms to allow third-party retail competitors to sell on their own platforms. We develop an analytical model to examine this retailer marketplace model and its business impact. We assume that a leading retailer has both valuation advantage that may come from its reputation and information advantage that may come from its brand awareness. We find that the availability of relatively low-cost advertising through social media or search engine can effectively reduce the leading retailer's information advantage, and thus be an important driving force for its strategic …

Determinants Of Social Behavior In Captive North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Olivia R. Beasley Dec 2018

Determinants Of Social Behavior In Captive North American River Otters (Lontra Canadensis), Olivia R. Beasley

Graduate Theses

Field Studies of North American River Otters (Lontra canadensis), documented social behavior atypical among its mustelid relatives. In the wild, river otters are most active during crepuscular hours and males have been shown to be more social than females, as they cooperatively forage within bachelor groups (Blundell et al. 2002). Most social behavior occurs at latrine sites, where feces act as a means of communication between conspecifics (Blundell et al. 2005). While scientists have conducted some behavioral research on wild river otters, detailed studies of interactions are difficult for a species that ranges widely. A full understanding of river otter …

Vulnerable Narcissism, Self-Criticism, And Self-Injurious Behavior: Emotion Regulation As A Moderator, Philip Stoner Dec 2018

Vulnerable Narcissism, Self-Criticism, And Self-Injurious Behavior: Emotion Regulation As A Moderator, Philip Stoner

Master's Theses

College students of traditional age have an elevated risk of self-injury (McManus et al., 2015). Self-injurious behavior (SIB) often indicates increased mental health concerns and elevated suicide risk (Whitlock, Eckenrode & Silverman, 2006). Self-criticism represents a non-physical form of self-injury (Baetens, et al., 2015), which is also associated with psychological distress and suicidal behavior. Thus, it is important to understand the risk factors associated with SIB and self-criticism. Vulnerable narcissism has been linked to self-injury (Dawood et al., 2017); however, there is little consensus about the nature of this relationship. Moreover, vulnerable narcissism has been associated with impaired emotion regulation …

Assessing Multicultural Parenting Values And Practices In Prevention Programs For Latino Youth, Ghaffar Ali Hurtado, Julie Fife, Maria Svetaz, Michele Allen

Journal of Youth Development

As communities become increasingly diverse, it is important to consider how cultural navigation interacts with adolescent development. We examined immigrant parenting values and practices to promote healthy development when developing Padres Informados/Jóvenes Preparados (Padres). Three focus groups were conducted with Latino immigrant parents (n = 27). Parents strove to foster a strong Latino identity to protect their children from detrimental preconceived notions about Latinos in the broader American culture. They conveyed a Latino identity by speaking Spanish and teaching the values of respect and familism. Parents expressed tremendous stress in parenting while navigating difficult policies, socioeconomic conditions, and unfamiliar systems. …

Heart And Shield Family Violence Prevention Program, Jill Baker-Tingey, Pamela Powell, Crystal Powell Dec 2018

Heart And Shield Family Violence Prevention Program, Jill Baker-Tingey, Pamela Powell, Crystal Powell

Journal of Youth Development

Children exposed to domestic violence (DV) inadvertently learn behaviors that make them more likely to become victims and/or perpetrators later in life unless they learn skills to address childhood trauma. This article discusses how two rural community needs assessments identified that DV prevention was a high-priority issue, the effects of DV on youth mental and physical health, and the resulting Heart and Shield Family Violence Prevention Program, a Cooperative Extension program designed to strengthen family relationships and break the cycle of violence. Implications for practice include helping youth build healthy relationships, incorporating DV awareness training in staff/volunteer professional development, collaborating …
