Keeping Pace With Relative Sea Level Rise: Marsh Platform Monitoring Shows Minimal Sediment Deficit Along The Louisiana Coast, Kelly Marie Sanks
Keeping Pace With Relative Sea Level Rise: Marsh Platform Monitoring Shows Minimal Sediment Deficit Along The Louisiana Coast, Kelly Marie Sanks
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Recent reports estimate that the marshes of the Mississippi Delta receive just 30% of the sediment necessary to sustain current land area1. An extensive monitoring campaign by the USGS and LCPRA provides direct measurements of sediment accumulation, subsidence rates, and deposit characteristics along the coast over the past 10 years2, allowing us to directly evaluate this sediment balance. By interpolating bulk density, organic fraction, and vertical accretion rates from 273 sites, a direct measurement of organic and inorganic sediment accumulation can be made. Results show that a total of 82 MT/year of sediment is delivered to the coast. Using a …
Efficacy Of Natural Compounds With Novel Carrier Systems For Controlling Campylobacter Jejuni In Post-Harvest Poultry, Sandip Shrestha
Efficacy Of Natural Compounds With Novel Carrier Systems For Controlling Campylobacter Jejuni In Post-Harvest Poultry, Sandip Shrestha
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Campylobacter jejuni, a leading cause of bacterial gastroenteritis worldwide, is strongly associated with the consumption and/or mishandling of raw contaminated poultry products. Thus, interventions aiming to reduce C. jejuni counts on poultry products could greatly reduce the incidence of human campylobacteriosis. In the first study, the efficacy of a generally recongnized as safe (GRAS) compound, carvacrol (CR; derived from oregano oil), as an antimicrobial wash treatment to reduce C. jejuni on chicken skin was evaluated. Three delivery systems of CR: suspension, emulsion and nanoemulsion were used. C. jejuni counts were reduced up to 4 log10 cfu/sample by 2% dose of …
Exploring School Counselors’ Narratives Of Cacrep Accredited Online Education Programs, Rebecca Van Der Hagen
Exploring School Counselors’ Narratives Of Cacrep Accredited Online Education Programs, Rebecca Van Der Hagen
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Online education is a growing part of academia. The number of online school-counseling programs is also increasing and beginning to include face-to-face and online programs. Little research describes online education and even less discusses online school-counseling programs. The purpose of this study was to examine and interpret participants’ experiences of being trained and graduating from a CACREP online school-counseling master’s program, as well as how their training prepared them for their current role as a school counselor. A qualitative inquiry was conducted to understand online school-counseling programs and reported how six professional school counselors perceived their online program with a …
Investigating Affective Pathways For The Influence Of Justification On Self-Control, Morgan Hill
Investigating Affective Pathways For The Influence Of Justification On Self-Control, Morgan Hill
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
People struggle with temptation in their everyday lives. Research often attributes failures in self-regulation to overwhelming and uncontrollable impulses. However, research also supports the idea that cognitive factors (e.g., justification) can license tempting behavior and allow individuals to behave in ways that run counter to their long-term goals. In addition, it is likely that affect plays a role in justification-based self-control failure. The current set of three studies investigated the role of affect in justification-based self-control failure. Study 1 tested the prediction that recall of past successes would result in increased positive affect. Study 2 assessed whether justification results in …

The survey was used to collect specific demographic data to provide a concise snapshot of each individual …
Money And Happiness For College Students, Robin Leonard
Money And Happiness For College Students, Robin Leonard
Honors Theses
This study was designed to expand the field of positive psychology and to investigate the relationship between money and happiness in college students. “Money” was further defined as financial satisfaction, and “happiness” was further defined as overall satisfaction with life for the purposes of the study. Existing psychological research demonstrates that many factors influence overall satisfaction with life, including face consciousness, perceived material wealth, goal setting, motivation orientation, cultural value, and the wealth of one’s home nation. However, less research has been conducted on the effects of finances on happiness. The research that does exist focuses on a specific range …
The 'Land Of Opportunity' Or The Land That Makes Us The Opportunity: An Examination Of Latinx For-Profit Choice Within The Central San Joaquin Valley, Joe A. Vasquez
Doctoral Dissertations
The San Joaquin Valley in Central California is known as an abundant agricultural epicenter with an extensive history of farming, migration, and political movements. Though this geography holds a rich representation of agricultural economy, it is also the site of major inequalities and underrepresentation, especially with regard to post-secondary education within its overrepresented Latinx population. Further amplifying the inequalities around post-secondary education and Latinx’s is the increasing occurrence of post-secondary enrollment into for-profit institutions by this population. Inequities associated with for-profit enrollment, such as high student loan debt and lack of career attainment, further stratify this geography classified as being …

Developing Intercultural Competence Through Online English Language Teaching, Didem Ekici
Doctoral Dissertations
With an increasing number of refugees and immigrants in European and American classrooms, teachers need to be prepared to meet their varied and complex needs. In particular, to help these diverse students succeed, teachers need to be interculturally competent, which is a combination of many skills including attitude, linguistic and cultural awareness, empathy, and flexibility. However, developing these skills not only takes theoretical knowledge but also hands-on training and practice. While many programs in school of education provide experiential practicum projects and online collaborations with diverse students, they have not expanded to the population in war zones. Moreover, a review …

Mission Enactment And Strategic Enrollment Management At Jesuit Universities, Drew Roberts
Mission Enactment And Strategic Enrollment Management At Jesuit Universities, Drew Roberts
Doctoral Dissertations
The larger neoliberal environment that is driving all of higher education has left Jesuit universities and their leadership to face two problems. First, the ability for Jesuit universities to uphold their social justice inspired mission and offer an affordable and accessible liberal education is being threatened because they are pricing out those they seek to serve. Second, there is a growing disconnect between the espoused mission of Jesuit universities and the decisions that their leaders and administrators make to run the enterprise.
This explanatory case study seeks to understand the ways senior-level strategic enrollment officers at Jesuit universities experience and …
Antibiotic Cement Spacer For Isolated Medial Wall Acetabular Deficiency In The Setting Of Infected Hip Arthroplasty, Juan Carlos Suarez
Antibiotic Cement Spacer For Isolated Medial Wall Acetabular Deficiency In The Setting Of Infected Hip Arthroplasty, Juan Carlos Suarez
All Publications
Periprosthetic joint infections remain challenging for orthopaedic surgeons. These are typically treated with 2-stage revision with an antibiotic spacer and arthroplasty reimplantation after infection eradication. We report a novel technique to create an antibiotic cement spacer construct in the setting of significant acetabular medial wall destruction due to osteolysis and infection. The medial wall of the acetabulum was reconstructed using antibiotic cement with 2 screws acting as a rebar. An acetabular liner was then cemented into place forming a cement construct similar to a reconstruction cage in function. This technique created a firm acetabular construct that allowed for the placement …

Compassion, a virtue of the helping profession, can be jeopardized by a provider’s continuous exposure to the trauma experiences of others. The impact of burnout, secondary stress and compassion fatigue on a mental healthcare provider’s work and personal life has been increasingly studied due to negative ramifications on our community healers. The present study used a cross-sectional design to survey mental healthcare providers across specialty and discipline in efforts to gain a better understanding of the relationship between a provider’s degree of compassion fatigue and specific demographic variables, physical health and their spirituality. One hundred and thirty-seven participants across the …
Tired Consultation To Improve And Maintain Teachers’ Behavior Specific Praise, Mariangely Melendez Galan-Torres
Tired Consultation To Improve And Maintain Teachers’ Behavior Specific Praise, Mariangely Melendez Galan-Torres
Dissertations
Many teachers are ill prepared in behavior management and literature has demonstrated the relationship between poor classroom management and academic outcomes. Common strategies to address teachers’ skill deficits in classroom management include didactic training and school-based consultation. Literature suggests that traditional didactic training can immediately increase knowledge acquisition, and school-based consultation is used to respond to ongoing academic and behavioral outcomes. However, both of these methods commonly fail to result in implementation fidelity and long-term maintenance of skill utilization. Research in the education field has demonstrated large to very large effect sizes for systems such as Response to Intervention (RtI) …

Physical activity benefits the health and well-being of breast cancer survivors (BCS). Yet, many African American survivors do not routinely exercise and have increased risk of poor outcomes. The purpose of this mixed-method study was to identify motivational factors compelling African American BCS to participate in a 14-week team walking program and to intend to continue exercise after the intervention concluded. Focus groups were held with participants (n = 12) before and after training. Content analysis discovered themes before the intervention: Not wanting to go at it alone, exercise not a life or treatment priority, cancer treatment affected activity, …
Comprehensive Evaluation Of Interventions: Eight Vital Parameters, Jaclene A. Zauszniewski, Abir K. Bekhet, Kayla Herbell
Comprehensive Evaluation Of Interventions: Eight Vital Parameters, Jaclene A. Zauszniewski, Abir K. Bekhet, Kayla Herbell
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Background It is critically important to determine the effectiveness of an intervention before it can be translated into clinical practice. However, the future implementation and sustainability of the intervention may be diminished if other intervention parameters are not assessed. This requires obtaining feedback from intervention recipients so interventions will be perceived as appealing, relevant, meaningful and beneficial to them; otherwise recipients may be unlikely to perform them over time, resulting in unsuccessful health outcomes.
Aim To propose the addition of two intervention parameters to the existing six-parameter model and provide examples from recent research of how each parameter can be …

Patient Safety Incentives For Residents: A Slippery Slope Or Reinforcement Of Desirable Behavior?, Kathryn Rapala
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
In a study of error reporting in the care of Medicare beneficiaries, the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General found that only 14% of patient safety events were reported.1 A multicenter study found that 44.6% of residents were uncomfortable reporting diagnostic errors, possibly related to fear of repercussions and issues with the reporting system, among other factors.2 A key question at the intersection of graduate medical education and patient safety is how to encourage resident and fellow error reporting.
The intervention described in the article, “Improving Resident and Fellow Engagement in Patient Safety …
What's Wrong With Obergefell, Gregg Strauss
What's Wrong With Obergefell, Gregg Strauss
Cardozo Law Review
Although Obergefell v. Hodges was a historic victory for progressive constitutional law, the Supreme Court's glorification of marriage created widespread anxiety among progressive family law scholars. Yet, the critics have still not explained why this marriage rhetoric arouses such moral indignation. Some critics predict Obergefell's rhetoric will shape family and constitutional law in ways that harm nonmarital families, but these forecasts rely on weak doctrinal arguments and cynical speculation about judicial behavior. Others argue Obergefell's rhetoric was gratuitously insulting. Is that as deep as the objection goes?
Obergefell's glorification of marriage is wrong, not because it was …

Preparing For The Apocalypse: A Multi-Prong Proposal To Develop Countermeasures For Chemical, Biological, Radiological, And Nuclear Threats, Constance E. Bagley, Anat Alon-Beck
Cardozo Law Review
The false alarm of a Hawaiian nuclear attack in January 2018 is an example of the lack of U.S. preparedness for attacks using nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction. To address such threats, this Article proposes the establishment of a nationwide integrated defense of health countermeasures initiative (DHCI). DHCI is a multi-prong program to create a defensive triad comprising government, private industry, and academia to develop countermeasures for health threats posed by chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) attacks. Key elements of our proposal include the use of the government's Other Transaction Authority to simplify procurement arrangements, the establishment …

Ip Rights And Indigenous Rights: Between Commercialization And Humanization Of Traditional Knowledge, Julie Yassine
Ip Rights And Indigenous Rights: Between Commercialization And Humanization Of Traditional Knowledge, Julie Yassine
San Diego International Law Journal
The relevance of traditional knowledge is undeniable, but the only question that remains is how to protect it. Does IP law provide adequate and sufficient protection for traditional knowledge? Can it accommodate the particularities of indigenous groups without affecting their aspirations and inspirations? Applying IP law to traditional knowledge is highly contested by indigenous communities, as it can effectively lead to a community’s partial or total commercialization, which requires some efforts to “humanize” it for further adaptation to the context of indigenous rights.

Psychotic disorders including schizophrenia are commonly accompanied by cognitive deficits. Recent studies have reported negative genetic correlations between schizophrenia and indicators of cognitive ability such as general intelligence and processing speed. Here we compare the effect of polygenetic risk for schizophrenia (PRSSCZ) on measures that differ in their relationships with psychosis onset: a measure of current cognitive abilities (the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia, BACS) that is greatly reduced in psychotic disorder patients, a measure of premorbid intelligence that is minimally affected by psychosis onset (the Wide-Range Achievement Test, WRAT); and educational attainment (EY), which covaries with both BACS …
