Trade Books’ Representations Of Benjamin Franklin, A Life Of Reinvention, Alyson Diver Thompson
Trade Books’ Representations Of Benjamin Franklin, A Life Of Reinvention, Alyson Diver Thompson
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
State and national education standards require teachers to introduce historical topics through multiple diverse texts, with emphasis on informational texts. Historical based trade books allow teachers to meet both English/language arts standards as well as history/social studies standards. Primary sources help provide students with a balanced view of history that may not be covered in textbooks and trade books, allowing students to gain a more complete and accurate understandings. The standards allow educators the flexibility to select trade books and primary sources for their classrooms. My research empirically evaluated how Benjamin Franklin is represented in children’s trade books, a figure …
The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Primary- And Intermediate-Level Trade Books, John Holden Bickford, Lori A. Knoechel
The Historical Representation Of Native Americans Within Primary- And Intermediate-Level Trade Books, John Holden Bickford, Lori A. Knoechel
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
State and national education initiatives require significant changes for public schools beginning at the earliest grade levels and within all content areas. Two relevant changes are the increase of non-fiction in English/language arts and the mandate for diverse texts within history/social studies. History-based trade books are a logical resource for both curricula. Teachers must rely on their discretion when selecting trade books because the initiatives do not provide curricular support. Research indicates trade books’ cultural representation and historical representation are inconsistent, yet there is a need for further research as just over a dozen empirical studies have been completed. This …
Historical Representation Of Immigration In Intermediate Elementary And Middle Grade Trade Books, John Holden Bickford, Stephanie J. Meier
Historical Representation Of Immigration In Intermediate Elementary And Middle Grade Trade Books, John Holden Bickford, Stephanie J. Meier
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Education initiatives require social studies, history, and civics teachers integrate multiple texts from diverse perspectives and English, reading, and language arts educators spend half their allotted time on non-fiction. The changes are not accompanied with ready-made curricula, which will likely increase the place of non-fiction trade books in various curricula. Historical misrepresentations appear in trade books, yet most topics have not been empirically examined. This inquiry explores trade books’ historical representation of immigration and immigrants’ experiences. The data pool was organized by books intended for students in Intermediate Elementary (3-5) and Middle Grades (6-8), which enabled consideration of spiraling and …
Helping Develop Students’ Civic Identities Through Exploring Public Issues, Jeremiah Clabough
Helping Develop Students’ Civic Identities Through Exploring Public Issues, Jeremiah Clabough
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Social studies teachers need to prepare students for their many roles and responsibilities as future citizens. This includes being able to analyze politicians’ recommendations about public issues and then making informed decisions on candidates and policies to support. In this manuscript, the author provides the steps and resources for an activity that builds students’ civic identity. Through the activity, students examine both Republicans and Democrats’ solutions to healthcare. They use the 2016 party platforms to complete this activity. Through all of the steps of this activity, students start to develop their own political identities about ways to address issues that …
Voices Of Cooperating Teachers And Preservice Teachers: Implications For Elementary Social Studies Education, Mary Beth Henning, Eiu-Kyung Shin
Voices Of Cooperating Teachers And Preservice Teachers: Implications For Elementary Social Studies Education, Mary Beth Henning, Eiu-Kyung Shin
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Examining the current beliefs and practices of elementary social studies teachers and preservice teachers suggests that there are similarities and differences between how they perceive their roles as curricular-instructional gatekeepers (Thornton, 1991). Using both survey data and focus groups, cooperating teachers describe their contemporary elementary social studies teaching practices as a blend of stand-alone activities and integrated instruction. Elementary teachers recommend more hands-on activities and literacy development strategies be taught in social studies methods classes. Preservice teachers also reported their preferred teaching practices and rationales in social studies, showing some significant differences from cooperating teachers.
Rethinking The Social In Social Studies, Jeffrey Manuel
Rethinking The Social In Social Studies, Jeffrey Manuel
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
This article reviews new approaches in history, social sciences, and science studies that suggest a rethinking of the social. The article begins by situating the social within a long history of social thinking throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It then examines how these new critical approaches to the social offer useful insights into current intellectual problems in the social studies curriculum.
Grooming Tomorrow’S Advocates: Preparing Elementary Social Studies Teachers Today, Rachel Finley-Bowman
Grooming Tomorrow’S Advocates: Preparing Elementary Social Studies Teachers Today, Rachel Finley-Bowman
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The effects of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) upon teaching and learning social studies at the elementary level are already well known. In light of the discipline’s increasing marginalization in the schools, the methods used to prepare elementary educators for teaching social studies and developing professional advocacy must be reexamined. This article, with reference to relevant scholarship, discusses eight key strategies to promote more effective teacher preparation, including a pledge of advocacy, meaningful pedagogy, pre-service professional development, knowledge of curriculum standards, content expertise, curriculum integration, significant field experience before student teaching, and reevaluation of NCLB.

Anatomy Of Mississippi Delta Growth And Its Implications For Coastal Restoration, Elizabeth L. Chamberlain, Torbjörn E. Törnqvist, Zhixiong Shen, Barbara Mauz, Jakob Wallinga
Marine Science
The decline of several of the world's largest deltas has spurred interest in expensive coastal restoration projects to make these economically and ecologically vital regions more sustainable. The success of these projects depends, in part, on our understanding of how delta plains evolve over time scales longer than the instrumental record. Building on a new set of optically stimulated luminescence ages, we demonstrate that a large portion (∼10,000 km2) of the late Holocene river-dominated Mississippi Delta grew in a radially symmetric fashion for almost a millennium before abandonment. Sediment was dispersed by deltaic distributaries that formed by means …

The Coast Guard And Navy, Colin S. Gray
The Coast Guard And Navy, Colin S. Gray
Naval War College Review
The U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard are natural complements, and this complementarity should be expressed practically, in a “national fleet” that is not mere rhetoric. The argument is new, but it is well established in historical practice. What should the Navy and Coast Guard do to aid each other?
The Tyranny Of Forward Presence, Daniel Gouré
The Tyranny Of Forward Presence, Daniel Gouré
Naval War College Review
A cardinal principle of Navy strategic planning is that “shaping” the international environment is a necessary and appropriate mission. However, the ever-increasing scope of forward presence exerts a tyrannical hold on the future of the Navy, a hold that threatens—in an era of constrained defense budgets and rapidly changing threats—to break the force.
President’S Forum, Arthur K. Cebrowski
President’S Forum, Arthur K. Cebrowski
Naval War College Review
More than ten years ago, historian Colin Gray asserted that, to put it bluntly, America has become accustomed to playing “away games.” America has enjoyed the great strategic advantage of decid- ing which wars to fight and whether to win or lose them. But now, many argue that it will not be so for long: the preferred American way of war is increasingly at risk.

Sir John Fisher’S Naval Revolution,, James Goldrick
Sir John Fisher’S Naval Revolution,, James Goldrick
Naval War College Review
This is a very good book and a very im- portant one. Nicholas Lambert has fol- lowed in the path of Jon Sumida’s In Defense of Naval Supremacy to present a lucid, compelling, and comprehensive analysis of the policies of Admiral Sir John Fisher and the Royal Navy in the decade before 1914. This work is based upon Lambert’s doctoral study of the de- velopment of the submarine, but it goes much farther than his original work in explaining the fundamental elements of Fisher’s naval policies and their effects on the Royal Navy.
The Maritime Basis Of American Security In East Asia, James E. Auer, Robyn Lim
The Maritime Basis Of American Security In East Asia, James E. Auer, Robyn Lim
Naval War College Review
East Asia is the one part of the world where great-power war remains thinkable. That is because it is the only region where the Cold War left a residue of unresolved great-power strategic tensions. The United States must engage itself, and maintain a balance of power, in the western Pacific. To do so, it still needs large resources of maritime power, and nuclear weapons.
Strategic Trends, Paul Dibb
Strategic Trends, Paul Dibb
Naval War College Review
There are positive tendencies, including the resurgence of economic growth and the spread of de- mocracy. But there are a number of negative tendencies that must be of serious concern. The United States needs to develop more coherence and predictability in its Asia-Pacific security strat- egy, and it should listen more carefully to its allies and friends there.

Naval War College Review
Tomorrow’s conflicts will present complex requirements, and many things will be required to ful- fill them. We need to pursue with great vigor the concept of network-centric operations and war- fare, and a set of initiatives that would be quite disruptive to an enemy. The rebalanced fleet of the future will require these kinds of characteristics.

The Impact Of Gap Years On Academic Outcomes For Women: A Case Study From The Missionary Age Change, Margaret Marchant
The Impact Of Gap Years On Academic Outcomes For Women: A Case Study From The Missionary Age Change, Margaret Marchant
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Young adults throughout the United States and other countries participate in “gap years,” or time away from school, often for travel, work, or volunteering. This practice is promoted as a way to mature and refocus. However, some worry that it lowers the likelihood of college completion. Previous literature has investigated the academic, social, and personal benefits of gap years with mixed results; however selection into gap years confounds the true impact with unobservable personal characteristics. To overcome selection issues, I exploit an exogenous policy change that lowered age requirements for missionary service, a unique type of gap year, resulting in …

Making Room For Roses: The 1911 Relocation Of The Multnomah County Poor Farm, Kira Helene Lesley
Making Room For Roses: The 1911 Relocation Of The Multnomah County Poor Farm, Kira Helene Lesley
Dissertations and Theses
From 1868 to 1911, the Multnomah County Poor Farm off Canyon Road in the Tualatin Hills housed indigent and sick residents of Portland and surrounding areas. In 1911, county officials relocated the Poor Farm from the West Hills flanking Portland to the far eastern portion of the county. Subsequently, the site hosted a municipal golf course and is currently home to the Oregon Zoo and Hoyt Arboretum. With no physical presence left, the original Poor Farm was quickly forgotten, and the reasons for its relocation have been obscured by the passage of time. Occasional references to the farm in newspapers …
The Imperial Legacy: An Examination Of The Trends Of Empire And Genocide From German Southwest Africa To The General Government, Laura Guebert
The Imperial Legacy: An Examination Of The Trends Of Empire And Genocide From German Southwest Africa To The General Government, Laura Guebert
Scholars Week
This project is an examination of the correlations between imperial enterprises of the Second German Empire and the Nazi Reich through the lenses of global and imperial critiques. By studying the realities and experiences of German Southwest Africa, the Ober Ost, and Nazi-occupied Easter Europe, this paper attempts to identify the common elements of German imperialism: pathos, frantic improvisation, cognizance of contemporaries, and industrial modernity. To help elucidate these elements, this research studied the themes and theories developed by leading historians of modern German and Eastern European history, including Timothy Snyder, Ben Kiernan, Shelley Baranowski, Vejas Gabriel Liulevicius, and Christopher …

Arcs Of Instability, Geoffrey Kemp

What do we mean by “the Middle East”? There is no single, agreed definition of its political or geographic boundaries. Geographers, historians, jour- nalists, and government bureaucrats all use the term, yet they frequently mean different things.

Issue 1: Caring Society V Canada: Neoliberalism, Social Reproduction, And Indigenous Child Welfare, Kate Bezanson
Journal of Law and Social Policy
In January 2016, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal in First Nations Child and Family Caring Society of Canada v Canada (Caring Society) found that the Canadian government had discriminated against Indigenous children on reserve in its provision of funding for child welfare and certain other services. Caring Society is a case about the daily and generational work that is needed in any society to ensure social, cultural, and economic survival, or what feminist political economists call social reproduction. This article thus asks a central question of this decision: are the main constitutional issues it raises best understood as contests over, …
