Striking Back Against Corporate Education Reform: The 2012 Chicago Teachers Union Strike, Kurt Hilgendorf
Striking Back Against Corporate Education Reform: The 2012 Chicago Teachers Union Strike, Kurt Hilgendorf
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
The Chicago Teachers Union went on strike against the Chicago Pubilc Schools in September 2012. The strike was not just about teachers' pay and benefits. Rather, the strike was a response to more than 15 years of a the latest iteration of corporate school reform. This essay situates the 2012 Chicago teachers' strike in the legal and policy contexts for corporate school reform in Chicago and Illinois and assesses the strike's outcomes locally and nationally. The strike was the largest teacher-led response to corporate school reform to date. It catalyzed a larger national conversation about the nature of school reform …

Uncovering Marginalized Topics Using Webquests: From Atlanta To The Zoot Suit Riots, Gregory Samuels, Michael Berson
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
A critical part of social studies instruction is involving students in making sense of social issues in the past and present to help inform their decisions in the future. Through engaged inquiry students can tackle relevant topics associated with race, class, culture, gender, language, and nationality and explore how these challenging issues mitigate people’s experiences. Moreover, these issues reflect similar tensions that students encounter in their everyday lives. Although these social issues have historical and contemporary relevance, they often are marginalized in state standards and textbooks.

The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
This research project focuses on collaborative partnerships between university faculty, graduate students, and local cooperating teachers. Pre-service teachers surveyed cooperating teachers (N=30) regarding their opinions and practices in social studies education. The data led to positive changes in a university methods course and increased pedagogical skills for teacher candidates.
This venture is a model of effective collaboration between university faculty, graduate students, pre-service teachers, and cooperating teachers who have worked together to gain a deeper understanding of the purpose and challenges faced by social studies educators. The overall goal of the project is to promote social studies education for all …

Stocks Or Stakeholders: Nonhuman Animals In Natural Resource Sociology, Michael Briscoe
Stocks Or Stakeholders: Nonhuman Animals In Natural Resource Sociology, Michael Briscoe
Student Research Symposium
Human values and meanings for nonhuman animals are socially constructed. Nonhuman animals provide value through tangible means, such as food or economic value, but they also are valued for providing experiences, symbols, and ecosystem services like diversity. Nonhuman animals are afforded certain rights and considerations in modern society, but these have proved insufficient in ensuring positive outcomes for both social and ecological systems. Considering nonhuman animals as stakeholders could improve natural resource outcomes by more fully addressing transboundary and uncertainty issues.
Defending Taiwan, And Why It Matters, Chris Rahman
Defending Taiwan, And Why It Matters, Chris Rahman
Naval War College Review
The Chinese threat to Taiwan is the primary near-term challenge to the East Asian order. As the Taiwanese are most unlikely to surrender willingly, and as the United States has a vital national interest at stake, a strong case can be made on strategic grounds for defending Taiwan’s de facto independent status, should the need arise. An Australian scholar makes that case.
Strategic Geography And The Greater Middle East, Robert Harkavy
Strategic Geography And The Greater Middle East, Robert Harkavy
Naval War College Review
Daily events in the Middle East, North Africa, the African Horn, South Asia, and ex-Soviet Central Asia offer little encouragement that this region is at the “end of history”—the end of major warfare and security rivalries. Two Gulf wars have been fought in recent memory, as well as Arab-Israeli and Indian-Pakistani wars. In that obvious sense, geopolitics is alive and well in the Greater Middle East.

Assessing Land Deformation And Sea Encroachment In The Nile Delta, Egypt, Esayas Gebremichael
Research and Creative Activities Poster Day
Persistent scatterer interferometric analyses were conducted on a stack of 84 Envisat ASAR scenes spanning 7 years (2004 to 2010) over the entire Nile Delta of Egypt and surroundings to monitor the ongoing spatial and temporal land deformation, identify the factors controlling the deformation, and model the interplay between sea level rise and land subsidence to identify areas and populations threatened by sea encroachment by the end of the 21st century. Findings include: (1) general patterns of subsidence in the northern delta, near-steady (none) subsidence in the southern delta, separated by a previously mapped flexure zone undergoing uplift; (2) high …

Aichi Biodiversity Target 19 calls on Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to improve, share, transfer, and apply knowledge. In this study, we provide an initial assessment of the state of evidence-based decision-making in Canada’s protected areas organizations by examining (1) the value and use of various forms of evidence by managers and (2) the extent to which institutional conditions enable or inhibit the use of evidence in decision-making. Results revealed that although managers value and use many forms of evidence in their decision-making, information produced by staff and their organizations are given priority. Other forms …

Preparing History Teachers And Scholars?: Content Exams And Teacher Certification From The Progressive Era To The Age Of Accountability, Richard Hughes
Preparing History Teachers And Scholars?: Content Exams And Teacher Certification From The Progressive Era To The Age Of Accountability, Richard Hughes
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
In recent decades states have mandated brief, multiple-choice exams to assess the content knowledge of history teachers for certification. Despite the efforts of college professors to assess student learning through research papers, essay exams, and other assignments, the ability of college students to graduate and become certified to teach history depends on a passing score on a small number of multiple-choice questions. The overlooked story of how standardized testing came to shape the certification of history teachers began at least 80 years before federal legislation such as No Child Left Behind (NCLB). Used in almost every state, such exams undermine …

We Shall See: Critical Theory And Structural Inequality In Economics, Neil Graham Shanks
We Shall See: Critical Theory And Structural Inequality In Economics, Neil Graham Shanks
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
This paper seeks to provide educators with a critique of dominant narratives through the disciplinary tools of economics. Specifically; issues of race, gender, and geography are addressed via the common economic subjects of fiscal and monetary policy, economic indicators, wages, and economic growth. By providing a practical blueprint for a more critical curriculum in economics, these lessons and the literature that supports them demonstrates the potential of teachers to challenge taken-for-granted notions of what economics is and what it is for.

Noodlenomics: Using Pool Noodles To Teach Supply And Demand, Jennifer Leigh Logan, Marsha Clayton
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
Supply and demand is a fundamental part of economics at the junior high school, high school and college level. Although it is very important for students to understand and apply this analytical tool, many are turned off by the graph as well as the labels needed. This paper offers techniques for making supply and demand easier for students to comprehend. The classroom activities are mainly designed for teachers of middle school and high school economics, but can also be used as a fun and easy introduction to the concept in a college classroom as well.

War-Gaming Network-Centric Warfare, Robert C. Rubel
War-Gaming Network-Centric Warfare, Robert C. Rubel
Naval War College Review
It is possible to design conventional games with a reasonable degree of validity, but to explore fully the needs of network-centric gaming we must go beyond traditional methods. The only way to game network-centric warfare is actually to create a network of players with shared awareness.

War Gaming In The Information Age—Theory And Purpose, Paul Bracken, Martin Shubik

The Dilemma Of Nuclear Weapons In The Twenty-First Century, Stansfield Turner

The United States does not need a reserve of nuclear weapons to take the offensive; something in the neighborhood of two hundred nuclear warheads will do for deterrence and retaliation. How did this nation ever get to a nuclear arsenal of 32,500 weapons?

Researching The Historical Representations Of Ancient Egypt In Trade Books, Lieren Schuette
Researching The Historical Representations Of Ancient Egypt In Trade Books, Lieren Schuette
The Councilor: A National Journal of the Social Studies
State and national education initiatives require that historical information be introduced in the classroom through the utilization of multiple diverse texts. The role of non-fiction in the English/language arts classroom, as well as informational texts in the history/social studies classroom, increased considerably. The use of trade books allows teachers to connect the two curricula, while also meeting the standards. Primary sources can assist in filling the informational gap left by trade books and textbooks, which allow students to gain a more balanced view of historical events. Teachers, however, are not given direction as to which specific curricular materials are most …
