“I had the experience of finding a particular professor who really got me to think long and hard about texts like Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Those were the experiences that really ignited something for me, and there was no going back. I became really obsessed with literature as a whole. It was much later that I came around to being a specialist in early modern literature.”
That’s the way Dr. Steven Swarbrick explains how he became interested in literature. A native of San Jose, California, he got his bachelor’s from San Francisco State University and his doctorate from Brown University, both …
Markers Of Cardiometabolic Risk And Thyroid Dysfunction In U.S. Adolescents: Nhanes Iii, Jonathan Austin
Markers Of Cardiometabolic Risk And Thyroid Dysfunction In U.S. Adolescents: Nhanes Iii, Jonathan Austin
Theses and Dissertations
The global prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its associated components (high fasting glucose, waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, and low HDL) have increased over the past few decades. In addition, abnormal thyroid hormone levels have been found to manifest in a cascade of metabolic dysfunction, which may be linked to MetS in youth. PURPOSE: The purpose of the study is to investigate the association between MetS, its components, and markers of thyroid function in a nationally-representative sample of adolescents. METHODS: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (1988-1994) collected data on the components of metabolic syndrome and thyroid …

© 2018 The Geologists' Association The Jurassic succession of the Wessex Basin – especially that cropping out within the Dorset and East Devon Coast World Heritage Site – contains important lagerstätten for coleoid cephalopods. The Blue Lias and Charmouth Mudstone formations of West Dorset, the Oxford Clay Formation of North Wiltshire and the Kimmeridge Clay Formation of Purbeck have provided large numbers of important body fossils that inform our knowledge of coleoid palaeobiology, including the hooks present in the arms. Isolated hooks are also found in the processed residues studied by micropalaeontologists and these occurrences can be used – in …
Purgatorio, Rosie Pineda
Purgatorio, Rosie Pineda
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Rodrigo Reyes’ provocative essay film re-imagines the Mexico/U.S. border as a mythical place comparable to Dante’s purgatory. Leaving politics aside, he takes a fresh look at the brutal beauty of the border and the people caught in its spell. By capturing a stunning mosaic of compelling characters and broken landscapes that live on the US/Mexico border, the filmmaker reflects on the flaws of human nature and the powerful absurdities of the modern world. An unusual border film, in the auteur tradition of camerastylo, Purgatorio ultimately becomes a fable of humanity, an epic and visceral experience with powerful and lingering images. …

Lupe Under The Sun, Rosie Pineda
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
Lupe Under the Sun is a neorealist film following an aging migrant worker living in California, who longs to return to Mexico before it is too late. Featuring a cast of nonprofessional actors, real farmworkers and authentic locations, Lupe Under the Sun tackles issues of depression, homesickness and the immigrant myth of the American Dream.
Long estranged from his family in Michoacán, migrant laborer Lupe finds relief from the backbreaking work of harvesting peaches in California’s Central Valley through camaraderie and a quiet love affair with fellow immigrant Gloria. Soon the stability of his daily routine begins to crack under …

Placing Caster Semenya Within And Outside Of Discourse On Sex And Gender In The Space Of International Professional Athletics, Joanna Line
Ray Browne Conference on Cultural and Critical Studies (2015-2021)
World Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Caster Semenya’s body has caused a rupture within the space of international professional athletics, which is structured according to a binary conceptualization of sex and gender. This rupture created a space for international discourse about alternative ways in which sex and gender can be defined, and to reimagine the space of international professional athletics, and other binary-bound non-sport spaces, to be more inclusive. Cultural geographer Denis Cosgrove's concept of landscapes and Stuart Hall’s concept of coding and decoding provide a framework for exploring how Caster Semenya’s body has been read and interpreted like a …

Metacarpal Ratio And Its Relation To Sexual Dimorphism In Primates With Different Mating Strategies, Emilee Hart
Metacarpal Ratio And Its Relation To Sexual Dimorphism In Primates With Different Mating Strategies, Emilee Hart
LSU Master's Theses
The digit ratio (2D:4D) is a sexually dimorphic trait in mammalian hands that is a result of levels of prenatal androgen exposure (PNAE) during limb development. Previous studies have shown that females have a higher ratio than males and that sexual dimorphism in the ratio is greater in species with polygynous mating strategies and high levels of intermale aggression compared to monogamous species with low intermale aggression. This study used metacarpals instead of phalanges to test the hypotheses that the metacarpal ratio (2Mc:4Mc) will be higher in females than males within a species and that the ratio would be more …

Helping Students Express Stance: What Research Reveals About Stance Qualities In Success Student Writing In The Disciplines, Zak Lancaster
Helping Students Express Stance: What Research Reveals About Stance Qualities In Success Student Writing In The Disciplines, Zak Lancaster
Student Success in Writing Conference (1999-2021)
An important assessment criterion for student academic writing, one that remains largely unnamed and untaught, concerns expression of stance. The term stance refers not only to the content of the writer’s position, but also to subtle markers of attitude, evaluation, and interaction with the reader. The quality of stance expression—whether, for example, it is more assertive or measured, amplified or muted, involved or distant—has been found to shape instructors’ assessments of overall writing quality. In fact, linguistic analyses have revealed patterns of difference in stance between higher- and lower-graded papers and between beginning and advanced student writing. Drawing on discourse …

Globalization And Natural-Resource Conflicts, Scott Pegg
Globalization And Natural-Resource Conflicts, Scott Pegg
Naval War College Review
The extraction of lucrative natural resources is increasingly, in several regions of the world, a source of violence—conflicts in which transnational corporations are frequently complicit but that they are also typically best positioned to resolve. While theoretical analysis of natural-resourcerelated violence is not yet mature, there are strong reasons for the U.S. armed forces and their civilian leadership to be cautious about intervening in such conflicts.
Germany And The United States In The Age Of Terror—Ideas, Domestic Politics, And The International System Of States, Donald Abenheim
Germany And The United States In The Age Of Terror—Ideas, Domestic Politics, And The International System Of States, Donald Abenheim
Naval War College Review
The world order anchored by the U.S.-German relationship has integrated Germany into Europe without more bloodshed, brought the transformation of communist Europe, and visited prosperity on a part of the world that could easily have been embroiled in strife. That world order, however, is being severely eroded by misunderstanding and rhetoric on all sides. A statecraft is needed that comprehends the nature of military power and what a given country can and cannot do to defend itself.

Research & Debate—Still Worth Dying For: National Interests And The Nature Of Strategy, P. H. Liotta
Research & Debate—Still Worth Dying For: National Interests And The Nature Of Strategy, P. H. Liotta
Naval War College Review
At their most abstract, U.S. national interests are simple: to ensure the security and prosperity of the American people in the global environment. But distinguishing core strategic interests—those for which Americans would be willing to die—from significant interests that might require commitment of treasure, blood, time, and energy is almost never easy.

Small Navies And Network-Centric Warfare—Is There A Role?, Paul T. Mitchell
Naval War College Review
The ability of Canadian warships to operate in U.S. aircraft carrier battle groups demonstrates that coalition network-centric naval warfare is possible. It has also shown, however, that the price of admission for coalition navies is high, in terms of technical interoperability, professional trust, and policy—above all, with respect to information transfer.
Naval Power For A New American Century, Roger W. Barnett
Naval Power For A New American Century, Roger W. Barnett
Naval War College Review
Today, with the free use of the sea, the air over the sea, space, and cyberspace; with the power of information superiority enabled by networking; with long-range precision weapons; with the development of new, abundant, and affordable sensors to illuminate the future battlespace; and with the techniques of information warfare, navies are far more able than ever before to influence events ashore rapidly, directly, and decisively.
Stalin’S Big-Fleet Program, Milan L. Hauner
Stalin’S Big-Fleet Program, Milan L. Hauner
Naval War College Review
In the 1930s, Joseph Stalin undertook to build one of the world’s largest navies, a Soviet fleet of battleships and battle cruisers. He did so in the face of well known impediments and shortfalls of geography, finances, and industrial capacity and capability—and in the absence of an obvious and compelling strategic rationale. Why?
A Tale Of Two Fleets—A Russian Perspective On The 1973 Naval Standoff In The Mediterranean, Lyle J. Goldstein, Yuri M. Zhukov
A Tale Of Two Fleets—A Russian Perspective On The 1973 Naval Standoff In The Mediterranean, Lyle J. Goldstein, Yuri M. Zhukov
Naval War College Review
Newly available Russian sources suggest that the superpower naval confrontation during and immediately after the 1973 Arab-Israeli War was more dangerous than has been generally appreciated, and that the Soviet Navy had made remarkable progress in correcting the deficiencies revealed in the Cuban missile crisis only a decade before. The episode is a cautionary case study for the U.S. Navy, which today has another “upstart” navy to consider.
