OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa and in Botswana in particular continue to bear the brunt of the HIV epidemic. This analysis assessed gender differences among theory-based sexual and reproductive health protective and risk factors in a cross-sectional sample of 228 Batswana adolescents. Incongruence between preferred and actual sources of sexual information and several important gender differences in parent-adolescent relationships, psychosocial influences, and adolescent sexual behaviors were identified. Parents were the fourth most common source of information about sex; yet, over three-quarters of adolescents preferred to have parents teach them about sex. Boys reported more positive relationships with their parents and girls …

Fostering Future Leaders Through A Holistic Approach To Discipline, Jennifer-Maple Loew Jan 2018

Fostering Future Leaders Through A Holistic Approach To Discipline, Jennifer-Maple Loew

Leadership for Sustainability Education Comprehensive Papers

Western public school systems are in crisis of failing our students through a funneling effect that punishes students for punitive matters rather then empowering students to learn to be active citizens. Dominant systems of education have produced results such as the marketing of schools, school-to-prison pipeline, harsh zero-tolerance policies and so on. With further staff training and a shift in the school culture, the top-down structure can turn towards a more engaging and meaningful educational environment for students to thrive in.

Rockwood 10 An Asset-Based Model For Community Housing, Portland State University. Center For Public Interest Design, Sergio Palleroni, Todd Ferry, Molly Esteve

Center for Public Interest Design Projects

At the initiation of Community Development Partners, this study is done in support of the possibility of a housing community within the town center of Rockwood. The development of the Rockwood 10 will support the community’s increasing need for high-quality and accessible family-sized housing as populations move east from the Portland-Metro Area, as well as support the larger needs and extraordinary cultural diversity of Rockwood. We recognize that the vitality of housing depends on its comprehensive support of its residents and the greater community.

Rockwood is positioned at the meeting point of the City of Gresham’s westernmost boundary and Portland’s …

Agnostic Moralism, Mark Silcox Jan 2018

Agnostic Moralism, Mark Silcox

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Many otherwise admired authors in the Western tradition (e.g. Plato, Augustine, and Tolstoy) have defended views about the radical dependence of aesthetic value upon morality that are nowadays regarded with deep skepticism. In more recent work on the connection between moral and aesthetic properties, Noël Carroll, Anne Eaton, Berys Gaut, and others have tried to defend relatively moderate varieties of moralism about art, according to which the aesthetic value of ethically significant artworks sometimes overlaps with but might also independently vary from their moral status. Here, I develop an immoderate species of moralism that treats the type of ethical knowledge …

On Canon, Craig Deksen, Darren Hudson Hick Jan 2018

On Canon, Craig Deksen, Darren Hudson Hick

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Canon is a concept from aesthetics that has become a regular subject of commonplace discussions. The nature of canon, especially as it is used in these commonplace discussions, has not been subject to adequate philosophical scrutiny. We attempt to remedy that by placing canon in its historical and philosophical context, exploring and rejecting several common accounts, and presenting some basics of how canon works. We reject the accounts that place control with the author or the legal property holder, which appear to be the most commonly held accounts.

Atmospheric Design And Experience With An Exemplary Study Of Olafur Eliasson's "The Weather Project", Zhuofei Wang Jan 2018

Atmospheric Design And Experience With An Exemplary Study Of Olafur Eliasson's "The Weather Project", Zhuofei Wang

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

In past decades, the subject of atmosphere has gone beyond the physio-meteorological scope and become a new concept of aesthetics. As the primary sensuous reality constructed by both the perceiving subject and the perceived object, atmosphere is neither a purely subjective state nor an objective thing, but essentially is a quasi-object pervaded by a specific emotional quality and a ubiquitous phenomenon forming the foundation of our life experience. In this respect, a decisive factor is not what we perceive but how we perceive. Furthermore, the quasi-objective quality of atmospheric phenomena makes it possible that atmosphere is producible. A practical dimension …

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This retrospective on service learning in the development of University Studies Capstones, the senior-level requirement in the University Studies general education program at Portland State University, explores how the original framers of University Studies anticipated the pitfalls of "pedagogies of whiteness" in deploying service learning as the hallmark pedagogical feature of the program; includes a case study of a Capstone course that centers on Indigenous ways of knowing, learning, and teaching through its pedagogy; and identifies the formative presence of Capstone faculty committed to anti-racist and anti-imperialist pedagogies. From a variety of institutional and disciplinary standpoints and through long association …

X-Rated And Excessively Long: Ji-Amari In Hayashi Amari's Tanka, Jon P. Holt

World Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications and Presentations

As a fixed 31-syllable form of short poetry, Japan's tanka is one of the world's oldest forms of still-practiced poetry, with examples perhaps dating back to the fifth century. In the modern periods of Meiji (1868-1912) and Taishō (1912-1926), poets radically reformed the genre, expanding diction beyond millennium-old classical limits, thereby allowing poets to write not only about cherry blossoms and tragic love but also about things like steam trains and baseball games; although today many tanka poets in practicing circles still employ classical Japanese, many modern masters innovated the genre by skillfully blending in colloquial language. Like their modern …

On Monetary And Non-Monetary Interventions To Combat Corruption, Ritwik Banerjee, Arnab Mitra

Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations

We study the relative effectiveness of extrinsic monetary disincentives and intrinsic non-monetary disincentives to corruption, using a harassment bribery game. In doing so, we also test the Beckerian prediction that at the same level of expected payoff, a low probability of detection with high fine is a stronger deterrent to corruption than a high probability of detection with low fine. In Experiment 1, two treatments are designed to study the effect of a low probability of detection with high fine and a high probability of detection with low fine, on bribe taking behavior. In Experiment 2, subjects participate in the …

A Pilot Randomized Clinical Trial Comparing Three Brief Group Interventions For Individuals With Tinnitus, Erin Martz, Margaret Chesney, Hanoch Livneh, Chennettee Jelleberg, Bret Fuller, James A. Henry

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Tinnitus (ie, ear or head noises not caused by external sounds) is common among the general population and is the most prevalent service-connected disability in the United States’ Department of Veterans Affairs system. While numerous clinical interventions have been created to systematically address the range of issues caused by tinnitus, only a few tinnitus interventions have focused on both teaching and assessing coping strategies. The present pilot study involved a randomized clinical trial comparing 3 brief group interventions to a usual-care (UC) group (ie, a wait-list control group): the first intervention based on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), a …

Legal Activism In The Face Of Political Challenges: The Nigerian Case, Jayanth K. Krishnan, Kunle Ajagbe

Articles by Maurer Faculty

Countries that move from authoritarianism to democracy often see increased rights-based, social justice lawyering after the transition. Given the new freedoms and opportunities present, this outcome is hardly surprising. However, relying on a literature and theoretical frame developed over the past two decades, this study argues that, in fact, such lawyering can have its historical roots in the legal activism that occurred during previous authoritarian periods. Consider Africa’s most populous country – Nigeria. Since gaining independence in 1960, Nigeria has witnessed, in total, nearly 30 years of military dictatorship. In 1999, the country adopted a democratic system of government, which …

Reason And Agency In Kant And Fichte, Michael Vater Jan 2018

Reason And Agency In Kant And Fichte, Michael Vater

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

This paper explores the question of the unity of Transcendental Idealism at the end of Eighteenth Century German philosophy, given that it circulated in different versions, Kant’s Critique [of humans’ rational powers] and Fichte’ System of Science [Wissenschaftslehre]. Both thinkers take the transcendental turn. They base conceptual investigations not on facts or empirical evidence, but on the possibility of a situation; they are idealists since they look inward to the spontaneity of the agent/knower for explanation, not the environment, stimulus, or sensory given. Reason can fathom only what it has constructed.

One arm used three district-level variables (parent Education level, socioeconomic status, and homogeneity of race) associated with social comparison theory (SCT) and five district-level variables (prevalence of advanced courses, rate of perceived safety, graduation rate, passing rate on the state achievement test, and athletic success) associated with traditional measures of school quality (SQ) to address three research questions. Multiple regression analysis was used to predict district transfer-out rates (TOR) and transfer-in rates …

Effects Of Explicit Learning On The Temporal Allocation Of Attentional Resources, Matthew Junker Jan 2018

Effects Of Explicit Learning On The Temporal Allocation Of Attentional Resources, Matthew Junker

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Environmental stimuli often occur in temporally predictable patterns. Given the capacity limits of temporal attention and the functional impairments resulting from inattention, it is advantageous to allocate attention to goal-relevant information while filtering out goal-irrelevant information. The temporal dynamics of attention are malleable and change in response to environmental demands. An unanswered question is the extent to which explicit knowledge of temporal patterns moderates the relationship between exposure to these temporal patterns and the ability to selectively attend to goal-relevant information. In the current study, participants completed a Rapid Serial Visual Presentation ( RSVP ) task in which they identified …

"What has to change is the model of work. It can't be that in order to be a partner in a law firm, a woman has to learn to renounce her children. It is the men who have to renounce this work model and take equal responsibility for their children. It is very difficult for a society to do this. "

How do law and culture affect the behavior of actors on the ground? If culture and law interact, how does this interaction occur? This Article examines how gender and law affect lawyers working in a Latin American country Chile …

Temporary Restraining Orders To Enforce Intellectual Property Rights At Trade Shows: An Empirical Study, Marketa Trimble Jan 2018

Temporary Restraining Orders To Enforce Intellectual Property Rights At Trade Shows: An Empirical Study, Marketa Trimble

Scholarly Works

Infringements of intellectual property (IP) rights by exhibitors at trade shows (also called trade fairs or exhibitions), such as infringements committed through exhibitions of or offers to sell infringing products, can be extremely damaging to IP right owners because of the wide exposure that trade shows provide for infringing IP; the promotion of the infringing IP and the contacts made by infringers at trade shows can facilitate further infringements after a trade show that can be very difficult for IP right owners to prevent. IP right owners therefore seek to obtain emergency injunctive relief to stop trade show infringements immediately—if …

Does Facial Physiognomy In The Context Of Anoccupational Safety And Health Message Predict Outcomes?, Ian Parker Jan 2018

Does Facial Physiognomy In The Context Of Anoccupational Safety And Health Message Predict Outcomes?, Ian Parker

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Physiognomy, the practice of looking to another person’s outward facial appearance to unmask the inner character of that person, has had a diverse historical impact within art, medicine, theology, anthropology, law, criminology, political history, psychology, psychiatry, and popular culture, since it was conceptualised in Greece during the 5th and 4th centuries B.C (Physiognomy, 1999-2009, 2009a). Aristotle, the prominent Greek philosopher, penned many chapters on physiognomic properties and touched upon strength/weakness, genius/stupidity, and other trait characteristics and their opposites in so far as such characteristics were associated with facial form (Physiognomy, 2006, 2009b).

In more modern times, facial recognition and evaluation …

The Psychometric Assessment Of Alexithymia: Development And Validation Of The Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire, David Preece, Rodrigo Becerra, Ken Robinson, Justine Dandy, Alfred Allan Jan 2018

The Psychometric Assessment Of Alexithymia: Development And Validation Of The Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire, David Preece, Rodrigo Becerra, Ken Robinson, Justine Dandy, Alfred Allan

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Alexithymia is a trait comprising people's ability to focus attention on and accurately appraise their own emotions. Its assessment is of clinical interest because people who have difficulty processing their negative and positive emotions are more vulnerable to developing psychopathology symptoms, however, existing alexithymia measures cannot comprehensively assess the construct across both negative and positive emotions. In this paper, we attempt to remedy these measurement limitations by developing and validating a new 24-item self-report measure, the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ), which is based on the attention-appraisal model of alexithymia. In Study 1, our confirmatory factor analyses in a sample of …
