On The Profitability Of Uas-Based Ndvi Imagery For Variable Rate Nitrogen Prescriptions In Corn And Wheat In North Dakota, Christopher Joseph Duchsherer

Agribusiness and Applied Economics

This study examines the grower’s decision to invest in precision agriculture technologies especially in-season variable rate nitrogen applications based on NDVI data collected from UAVs. NDVI, yield, soil, and other field data were collected from multiple corn and wheat fields located throughout North Dakota. Each field was divided into management zones to determine profitability of utilizing the technology based on in-season nitrogen applications for the grower’s field practice, high, low, and no applications. Results show that using the NDVI data collected from UAVs can be profitable when the grower decides to make the decision to apply nitrogen in a sidedress …

Modes Of Introspective Access: A Pluralist Approach, Adriana Renero Jan 2018

Modes Of Introspective Access: A Pluralist Approach, Adriana Renero

Publications and Research

Several contemporary philosophical theories of introspection have been offered, yet each faces a number of difficulties in providing an explanation of the exact nature of introspection. I contrast the inner-sense view that argues for a causal awareness with the acquaintance view that argues for a non-causal or direct awareness. After critically examining the inner-sense and the acquaintance views, I claim that these two views are complementary and not mutually exclusive, and that both perspectives, conceived of as (what I call) modes of introspective access, actually broaden the notion of introspection. I then propose a useful distinction between (what I …

Shanghai Is A Fast Paced City: An Exploration Into The Rapid Growth Of Queer And Trans Communities In Shanghai, China, Frances S. Hanna Jan 2018

Shanghai Is A Fast Paced City: An Exploration Into The Rapid Growth Of Queer And Trans Communities In Shanghai, China, Frances S. Hanna

University Honors Theses

In this undergraduate honors thesis, I utilize supplementary research, the theories presented by Michel Foucault, Eve Sedgwick, Jürger Habermas, and Roland Barthes in addition to my own personal experiences and observations through an autoethnographic lens to answer the question, “How do gender and sexual minority groups, such as queer and trans people, develop, maintain, and grow community spaces in Shanghai, China?” This work seeks to shine a light on the often underrepresented and unstudied topic of queer and trans communities in China, and how they continue to flourish despite pre-existing structures that deter them. Evoking Foucault’s imagery of a different …

Appreciating Nature And Art: Recent Western And Chinese Perspectives, Glenn Parsons, Xin Zhang Jan 2018

Appreciating Nature And Art: Recent Western And Chinese Perspectives, Glenn Parsons, Xin Zhang

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Landscape painting has played a significant role in shaping practices of nature appreciation in Western and Chinese cultures. Both cultures have also seen the recent emergence of philosophical views of nature appreciation that stress the importance of ecological understanding. However, these philosophical views differ in their response to the influence of the landscape painting tradition: whereas Western approaches have largely been critical, Chinese ecoaestheticians have embraced it. In this paper, we explore this difference and argue that it is not explained by differences between Western and Chinese art but by differences in Western and Chinese philosophers’ conceptions of ecology. We …

Selected Lectures, Shorter Writings, And Translations, Peter Bien

Dartmouth Scholarship

About the Book

This volume meanders toward Greek subjects presented in the classrooms of various universities or in the lounge of a cruise ship, a restaurant in Greece, or illegally in the Delphic stadium. The book also touches on other literatures and on non-literary subjects such as Dartmouth's student revolution in 1969, a Scorsese film, Quakerism, and prostate cancer. There is even a teeny mock epic called "Dartmouthiad." -- From the Introduction.

About the Author

Peter Bien is Professor Emeritus of English and Comparative Literature at Dartmouth College. His "Kazantzakis: Politics of the Spirit," volumes 1 & 2, are published …

10, Danse Macabre, Stefano Paparo Jan 2018

10, Danse Macabre, Stefano Paparo

Kerver Book of Hours: 2018 Senior Capstone

The Danse Macabre (the Dance of Death) is a 15th-century conceit, both pictorial and textual, of the humbling power of death. In the years following the plagues of late 14th-century Europe, it seems almost inevitable that the Danse Macabre would become a popular theme in medieval art. The Danse Macabre in Thielman Kerver’s printed Book of Hours (1507) is depicted in a series of marginal illustrations in which Death, pictured as a decomposing corpse or transi, accompanies 66 “dancers” to the afterlife. Medieval artists and their patrons could subvert attitudes toward certain figures of power by including their images in …

Kerver Book of Hours: 2018 Senior Capstone

Speculum Conscientie is Latin for “Mirror of Conscience” and this section of the Book of Hours is composed of elements that reflect that meaning. The section contains the Ten Commandments, the seven mortal sins, and the articles of the faithful which include the five senses, works of corporal and spiritual mercy, theological virtues, cardinal virtues, the seven gifts of the holy spirit, and the seven ecclesiastical sacraments. This essay discusses the content, placement, and symbols of this section of this Book of Hours.

12, Signs Of The Apocalypse, Cora Beth Finney Jan 2018

12, Signs Of The Apocalypse, Cora Beth Finney

Kerver Book of Hours: 2018 Senior Capstone

Books of Hours are one of the richest sources of medieval apocalyptic imagery. In Thielman Kerver’s 1507 printing, over seventy images relating to the Signs of the Apocalypse appear within the margins of its Hours of the Trinity and the Office of the Dead. Apocalyptic iconography is commonly found accompanying the prayer cycles of the Office of the Dead in late medieval Books of Hours, although it is less common in the Hours of the Trinity, making this placement in this Book of Hours unusual. In this text, the images depicting the Signs of the Apocalypse can be separated into …

Effects Of Variable Density Thinning On Spatial Patterns Of Overstory Trees In Mt. Hood National Forest, Emma Huston Jan 2018

Effects Of Variable Density Thinning On Spatial Patterns Of Overstory Trees In Mt. Hood National Forest, Emma Huston

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

Variable density thinning (VDT) is a method of restoration thinning that attempts to increase ecosystem resilience and spatial heterogeneity in forest stands to more closely resemble mosaic-like patterns characteristic of late-successional forests, which consist of clusters of multiple trees, individual trees, and gaps. This study examines the spatial patterning of overstory trees resulting from VDT of conifer forests in Mt. Hood National Forest in the western Cascade Mountains and compares these patterns with reference conditions. Stem maps were created from field surveys of study plots within one mature stand and six thinned stands designated as Late-Successional Reserve (LSR) with varying …

Long-Term Managed Flooding To Control Invasive Phalaris Arundinacea L. And Help Restore Native Vegetation In An Urban Palustrine Wetlands Ecosystem, Robert P. Lascheck Jan 2018

Long-Term Managed Flooding To Control Invasive Phalaris Arundinacea L. And Help Restore Native Vegetation In An Urban Palustrine Wetlands Ecosystem, Robert P. Lascheck

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

We sought to determine the effects of 13 years of hydrologic management on the wetland plant community in Smith and Bybee Wetlands Natural Area (SBW), an 809 ha palustrine wetland complex in north Portland, Oregon. Previous management efforts resulted in an altered hydrologic regime; historically high water levels in spring and low water levels in fall were replaced by persistent water levels with minimal annual variations. A water control structure was installed in 2003 to better approximate historic seasonal hydrologic changes to reduce invasive Phalaris arundinacea (reed canarygrass) cover and promote native wetland vegetation growth. Vegetation monitoring has been carried …

Existing Ecological Conditions And Management Recommendations For A Portion Of The Chehalem Ridge Nature Park, Oregon, Amanda Pole

Environmental Science and Management Professional Master's Project Reports

Effective land management and habitat restoration work rely on the collection of baseline information regarding the existing conditions of the planning area. Existing conditions assessments can include such information as hydrologic conditions, botanical species assessment, land use issues, wildlife surveys, habitat distribution/quality assessments, etc. This project provides Oregon Metro’s Parks and Nature department with updated information regarding the existing conditions of a portion of the Chehalem Ridge Nature Park (CRNP) as well as recommendations and supplemental maps to aid in future management planning.

Within the ~61-acre project area exist several habitat types: a developing seasonal wetland, riparian forest, Douglas-fir forest, …

The Contributions Of Parental, Academic, School, And Peer Factors To Differences By Socioeconomic Status In Adolescents’ Locus Of Control, Dara Shifrer Jan 2018

The Contributions Of Parental, Academic, School, And Peer Factors To Differences By Socioeconomic Status In Adolescents’ Locus Of Control, Dara Shifrer

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

An internal locus of control may be particularly valuable for youth with low socioeconomic status (SES), yet the mechanisms that externalize their control remain unclear. This study uses data on 16,450 US 8th graders surveyed for the National Education Longitudinal Study in 1988 and 1990. Results indicate family income is more closely associated with adolescents’ locus of control than parents’ occupations and educational attainment, and that race does not independently affect adolescents’ locus of control net of these other components of SES. Findings also indicate higher SES adolescents feel more internal locus of control in largest part because their parents …

Ideas In Dialogue: Leveraging The Power Of Child-Led Storytelling In The Multicultural Preschool Classroom, Erin E. Flynn Jan 2018

Ideas In Dialogue: Leveraging The Power Of Child-Led Storytelling In The Multicultural Preschool Classroom, Erin E. Flynn

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

An investigation into the interactive features of small group, child-led storytelling in preschool classrooms serving lower socioeconomic status (SES), multilingual children shows both the affordances and constraints of positioning children to author their own experiences in the classroom. In story circles, children told stories which included canonical instantiations of story and culturally-shaped features. Through their stories, the children advanced ideas, built connections, and evaluated ways of telling stories as they continued ideas like threads from story to story. Child-led storytelling did not disrupt the dynamics of power through which some ways of using language are privileged while others are marginalized. …

Edwards, Meg Devoe, Richard Gil, Matthew Mitchell, Honora Englander, Christina Nicolaidis, Multiple Additional Authors

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Medically complex urban patients experiencing homelessness comprise a disproportionate number of high-cost, high-need patients. There are few studies of interventions to improve care for these populations; their social complexity makes them difficult to study and requires clinical and research collaboration. We present a protocol for a trial of the streamlined unified meaningfully managed interdisciplinary team (SUMMIT) team, an ambulatory ICU (A-ICU) intervention to improve utilization and patient experience that uses control populations to address limitations of prior research.

Methods/design: Participants are patients at a Federally Qualified Health Center in Portland, Oregon that serves patients experiencing homelessness or …

Portland Fire And Rescue: Blueprint For Success, Sean Edging, Mike Kimble, Thea Kinschuh, B. Danielle Schulte, Tristan Sewell

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects

In order to maintain response times alongside a growing population while continuing to improve quality of service to the City of Portland, Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) is working toward developing strategies to prevent emergencies from happening rather than solely responding to proactive strategies to reduce fire and medical risks before they become worst-case scenarios where a 9-1-1 call must be made. To this end, the City of Portland launched the Vision Zero Campaign for zero fire or traffic fatalities in the service area. The Blueprint for Success strategy, in turn, was created to act as the means of achieving …

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Senior Inquiry is a dual-credit bridge program partnership between University Studies and regional school districts. The partnerships with Portland Public Schools have prioritized serving first-generation students and other underserved populations. As the program has grown, equity concerns among the collaborative teaching teams prompted experimenting with a whole-school model at Jefferson High School Middle College for Advanced Studies while working within the frame of the course theme of Race and Social Justice. This article documents how the Jefferson Senior Inquiry team attempts to authentically address the accumulated systemic inequities encountered by students in our classrooms. Student-centered pedagogy must be modified and …

University Studies Leadership: Vision And Challenge, Maurice Hamington, Judith A. Ramaley

University Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although University Studies at Portland State University often receives attention for its signature curricular structure of year-long thematic mentored Freshman Inquiry, thematic mentored Sophomore Inquiry, thematic departmental Cluster courses, and community-based Capstone courses, it is the underlying pedagogical values and philosophy that represent the real revolution in higher education—a revolution that is ongoing at Portland State. Few large state universities can claim to offer a quarter-century of experience with general education change of this magnitude. This article addresses how a shared purpose evolved over the course of University Studies' history and was impacted by what various leaders emphasized during their …

Ideas And Graphs: The Tetrad Of Activity, Martin Zwick Jan 2018

Ideas And Graphs: The Tetrad Of Activity, Martin Zwick

Complex Systems Faculty Publications and Presentations

A graph can specify the skeletal structure of an idea, onto which meaning can be added by interpreting the structure. This paper considers several directed and undirected graphs consisting of four nodes, and suggests different meanings that can be associated with these different structures. Drawing on John G. Bennett’s “systematics,” specifically on the Tetrad that systematics offers as a model of “activity,” the analysis formalizes and augments the systematics account and shows that the Tetrad is a versatile model of problem-solving, regulation and control, and other processes. Discussion is extended to include hypergraphs, in which links can relate more than …

Exploring The Inner Relationships Between Modern Chinese Aesthetics And The Confucian Mind-Soul (心性) Framework, Wei Du Jan 2018

Exploring The Inner Relationships Between Modern Chinese Aesthetics And The Confucian Mind-Soul (心性) Framework, Wei Du

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

Modern Chinese aesthetics promotes the utilitarian function of the arts and artistic appreciation via aesthetic education and an arts-infused lifestyle. This utilitarian orientation has not originated from European aesthetics, but rather reflects a localized awareness of the “humanistic enhancement of citizens” through the arts, which, derived from the Confucian tradition, expands on its “mind-soul” theory. This conceptual framework finds its roots in the Song-Ming philosophy of mind and pays particular attention to the cultivation of individual morals and personal character as the essential pathway towards restoring conscience. This positioning of values and valuations, to a large extent, was the inspiration, …

The Issue Of Newness Viewed Through Korean Aesthetics, Joosik Min Jan 2018

The Issue Of Newness Viewed Through Korean Aesthetics, Joosik Min

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

In Korean traditional aesthetics, discussions on newness are rare. The tendency to value old things and recognize them as standards is deeply rooted in Korean culture, and such customs seem to be no exception in aesthetics. It cannot be denied that Korean arts also has a social tendency towards tradition, which has been dominated by morality, and thus reflects past-centered or past-recalling ways of thinking rather than dynamic or forward-looking ways of thinking. Then, what does artistic creation mean in Korean culture? Is creation possible? In my view, the logic of change and development does not seem to gain much …
