Tennessee Esl Teachers' Self-Efficacy: A Predictive Correlational Study, Anna Carrie Flynt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this quantitative, predictive correlational study was to examine variables that arecorrelated with Tennessee K-12 English as a second language teachers self-efficacy. With the changes stipulated by the Every Student Succeeds Act recently approved by the Tennessee Department of Education, there is a need to examine possible factors associated with ESL teachers self-efficacy because teacher self-efficacy has been linked to teacher effectiveness and, in turn, student learning. Using social cognitive theory as a framework, predictor variables were identified and included route to licensure, practicum hours, presence of mentor, years of teaching experience prior to ESL, years of experience …

Optimal Delivery Of Remedial Mathematics Programs In U.S. Higher Education, Lisa Renee Loden
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Remedial mathematics has been considered the roadblock to obtaining a college degree by students and educators for years. The purpose of this research is to determine the optimal time and delivery method of the three presented (fully module, module with a traditional lecture component, and fully on-line) for teaching remedial mathematics. This is accomplished by comparing pass rates. First, pass rates are compared to determine if there is a statistically significant difference between pass rates in the two models for teaching remedial mathematics (pre-requisite and co-requisite). Next, pass rates are compared to determine if there is a statistically significant difference …

Education On The Inside: Incarcerated Students' Perceptions Of Correctional Education Programs, Stephanie Cage
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The United States has alarmingly high incarceration and recidivism rates. Many of those incarcerated have less education than their general population counterparts. Correctional education programs have a proven ability to reduce incarceration and recidivism rates by helping rehabilitate people. Current research on incarcerated students primarily focuses on the external benefits of correctional education programs such as recidivism. A limited amount of research is represented in the literature on incarcerated students’ perceptions about their academic experiences. The purpose of this study was to explore incarcerated students’ perceptions regarding their correctional education experiences. The study particularly investigated students at a Louisiana correctional …

The Charter School Movement As A Form Of White Supremacy: A Discourse Analysis Of State And Federal Educational Policies And How They Further Segregation, Bobby White
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
AbstractCharter schools have become a mainstay in the American Education system. Low academic performance, school safety concerns and an overall decrease in positive perception of many traditional public schools around the country have led to an atmosphere of acceptance as part of the solution to what ails public education. The growth of this movement has led to a body of research around charter school impact. Much of the charter school growth has been driven by policies created over the past 20 years. One major unintended outcome of the movement has been the increase in school segregation. One researcher admonishes that …

"Duodecimo Editions Of The New Jerusalem": Writing Utopia In Nineteenth-Century America, Ashley Rattner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
"'Duodecimo editions of the New Jerusalem': Writing Utopia in Nineteenth Century America" argues that communitarian experiments were mediated through literary forms to make comprehensive systems of reform legible to the external world. The publication strategies of four nineteenth-century communitarian experiments demonstrate that communitarian reform thrived on a national scale within the fragmented, localized print networks that characterized the early portion of the century. Through depictions of Nashoba in periodicals, New Harmony in pamphlets, Brook Farm as a romance, and the Shaker-Tolstoy correspondence across print mediums, I trace authors' manipulations of acts of reading coordinated to reform the nation on a …

Perceived Cultural Competence And Self-Awareness In Doctoral Psychology Students: Does International Experience Matter?, Sarah K. Hatcher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The importance of cultural competence for psychologists and psychology students are discussed at length in theoretical psychology literature. Some authors have suggested that international experiences such as study and work abroad may promote cultural competence. However, few empirical studies explore whether such experiences actually promote intercultural and multicultural competence. The current study investigated whether international experience, defined as time spent outside the United States for the purposes of education, professional training or work, is associated with higher levels of perceived intercultural competence (IC), multicultural competence (MC), and self-awareness among doctoral students in psychology. Two hundred seventy-seven psychology doctorate students from …

This study examines the intersections of place and second language learning. Learner identity has been found to be an important construct in second language learning. In recent years, place and space have become central topics in the study of sociolinguistics and identity. One area of place and language that has not been studied in depth, however, is whether place plays a role in second language learning. This study begins to fill this gap by examining the second language learning experiences of thirteen Japanese study abroad students who were enrolled in an eight-week, content-based language course. The content of the course …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Recently, it has become increasingly popular among Saudi students to study abroad. There are, for example, currently 58,726 Saudi students studying at the university level in the United States. During their study abroad (SA) journey, when they wish to say something to someone, they need to determine the situationally-appropriate utterances: What can be said, to whom, where, when, and how. From the interlanguage pragmatic (ILP) perspective, the SA context is assumed to provide more opportunities to communicate with native speakers, and these opportunities are believed to lead to pragmatic gains (Kinginger, 2008, 2009).Guided by five research questions, this study investigated …
