Cultivating The Wild: Strategies For Entrepreneurs Navigating Niche And Specialty Food Markets, Trey Malone, Courtney F. Cooper Jul 2025

Cultivating The Wild: Strategies For Entrepreneurs Navigating Niche And Specialty Food Markets, Trey Malone, Courtney F. Cooper

Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Faculty Publications and Presentations

Introduction Consumer demand for authenticity and sustainability in food systems is growing, creating both opportunities and challenges for entrepreneurs in niche and specialty markets. While wild-foraged and hunted foods are often perceived as more "natural" and sustainable, attempts to scale these products through farming may compromise their perceived authenticity. Methods To explore these dynamics, we conducted discrete choice experiments with a nationally representative sample of 1,039 U.S. consumers. Participants evaluated their willingness to pay (WTP) for salmon, venison, and morel mushrooms, presented in both wild-foraged/hunted and farm-raised forms. Results Consumers exhibited strong preferences for wild versions of all three products, with average …

On Expertise Change: The Use And Misuse Of Cultural Evolutionary Models, Ge Fang Jul 2025

On Expertise Change: The Use And Misuse Of Cultural Evolutionary Models, Ge Fang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Expertise is a major topic in the thoughts of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle in the West, as well as in the thoughts of Daoist and Buddhist philosophers in the East. Expertise interests ancient philosophers due to the distinctive phenomenology of expertise, the puzzle surrounding the relationship between declarative knowledge and expertise, the practical process of expertise formation, and the use of expertise acquisition as a model for ethical and epistemic development. Philosophical interest in expertise has resurfaced in the last century, particularly regarding the phenomenology of expert performance, the relation between knowledge and expertise, and expertise-based models of ethical and …

Dissecting Macrophage Metabolism In Metabolic Liver Disease, Mandy Mei-Ying Chan Jul 2025

Dissecting Macrophage Metabolism In Metabolic Liver Disease, Mandy Mei-Ying Chan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is the most common cause of chronic liver disease around the globe; however, the mechanisms that lead to the progression of metabolic liver disease are poorly understood. Liver-resident macrophages, known as Kupffer cells (KCs), are the largest population of macrophage in the human body, playing a critical role in immune sensing and tissue homeostasis. In the context of MASLD, KCs undergo cell death through an unclear mechanism, and monocytes enter the liver where they differentiate into macrophages. Next-generation sequencing and spatial-omics studies have revealed significant, heterogeneity in the recruited macrophage populations in both human …

Predicted Inelastic Response Of Conventional And Ductile Steel Concentrically Braced Frame Buildings Under Wind Loads, Conrad Hamblin Belshe Jul 2025

Predicted Inelastic Response Of Conventional And Ductile Steel Concentrically Braced Frame Buildings Under Wind Loads, Conrad Hamblin Belshe

Theses and Dissertations

The inelastic response of three-story steel concentrically braced frame buildings under wind loads was simulated to determine the applicability of ductile braced frame design to wind load applications. This study examined three types of steel concentrically braced frames: a conventional braced frame, a ductile braced frame, and a ductile braced frame with a reduced beam requirement. Braced frames were designed for four design wind speeds (220 mph, 156 mph, 127 mph, and 110 mph), for a total of nine unique braced frame designs. Nonlinear static pushover analysis was used to determine system overstrength and ductility under wind loads. Eigenvalue vibration …

Evaluating Ai-Powered Predictive Analytics For Public Transport Demand In Dubai, Sara Ismail Dhalam Jul 2025

Evaluating Ai-Powered Predictive Analytics For Public Transport Demand In Dubai, Sara Ismail Dhalam

Theses

This thesis examines the application of AI-driven predictive analytics to model demand for metro and tram rides in Dubai, utilizing machine learning models in SAS Viya, as Dubai advances its innovative city initiatives. Research focuses on how seasonal variations, the use of metro lines, and types of communities affect trends in passenger flow. Gradient Boosting emerged as the most reliable predictive model, achieving the highest KS values in all scenarios. It effectively captured the increase in ridership during winter on the Red Metro Line and identified summer declines on the Green Line. The findings highlight significant seasonal fluctuations in residential …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Background: Testosterone therapy for low libido in women has become increasingly prevalent in recent years. While numerous testosterone formulations exist and have been studied in women, there has been little data assessing the safety and efficacy of subcutaneous testosterone pellet use in this population. The primary objective of this study is to understand the biochemical effects and side effect profile of female patients who underwent testosterone pellet insertion in a clinical practice.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of female patients who underwent testosterone pellet insertion from 2009 to 2022 was undertaken. Women taking 75 and 100 mg testosterone pellets were …

Integrating Circulating Tumor Dna Into Clinical Management Of Colorectal Cancer: Practical Implications And Therapeutic Challenges, Nikhil Vojjala, Viktoriya Gibatova, Raj N Shah, Sakshi Singal, Rishab Prabhu, Geetha Krishnamoorthy, Karen Riggins, Nagaishwarya Moka

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

The American Cancer Society estimates that over 152,000 new cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) were diagnosed in 2024, with more than 105,000 cases affecting the colon and 46,000 involving the rectum. CRC remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, with an estimated 53,010 deaths in 2024. In the era of precision medicine, which incorporates molecular and environmental information into clinical decision-making, identifying patients harboring a deficiency in Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair allowed for targeted immunotherapies and significantly reduced CRC-related mortality. A significant advancement in this domain is the application of liquid biopsy, which has emerged …

Analyzing National War Propaganda Through Comparison Of Diverse Case Studies, Ike Sugitani Jul 2025

Analyzing National War Propaganda Through Comparison Of Diverse Case Studies, Ike Sugitani

Dissertations and Theses

In the build-up to war, national governments utilize propaganda to gather public support for the war effort. In some instances, propaganda campaigns are conducted but war does not occur. This begs the question as to why war follows propaganda campaigns in some cases, but not in others. I argue that propaganda efforts that lead to war can be generally characterized through three major strategies based on a patriotic participatory social structure, a claim to moral authority, and the blending of individual concepts of the state, government and nation. In this study, I analyze the major historical case studies of the …

Background: Despite numerous studies on medulloblastoma (MB) cell heterogeneity, the spatial characteristics of cellular states remain unclear.

Methods: We analyze single-nucleus and spatial transcriptomes and chromatin accessibility from human MB spanning four subgroups, to identify malignant cell populations and describe the spatial evolutionary trajectories. The spatial copy number variations (CNVs) patterns and niches were analyzed to investigate the cellular interactions.

Results: Three main malignant cell populations were identified, including progenitor-like, cycling, and differentiated populations. Gene signatures of cell populations strongly correlate to clinical outcomes. These tumor cell populations are geographically organized as stem-like and mature regions, highlighting their spatially heterogeneous …

Transnational Politics Of Cambodian American Ethnic Organizations: Strategies, Motivations, And Impacts, Simin Tan, Wen Chen Jul 2025

Transnational Politics Of Cambodian American Ethnic Organizations: Strategies, Motivations, And Impacts, Simin Tan, Wen Chen

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

Since several large-scale migrations to the U.S. in the 1970s, Cambodian Americans have established a number of ethnic organizations aimed at intervening in the political landscape of their homeland. These organizations span from subversive groups seeking to overthrow the Cambodian government through armed insurgency to reformist groups advocating for human rights improvements and peaceful political transformation. The refugee experiences of first-generation Cambodian Americans have served as a key motivator for their involvement in transnational politics, while the degree of social integration shapes the extent to which different generational cohorts engage in these political activities. In addition, both the Cambodian government’s …
