Pragmatic Developmental Pathways By Saudi Learners Of English During Study Abroad, Fahad Alzahrani
Pragmatic Developmental Pathways By Saudi Learners Of English During Study Abroad, Fahad Alzahrani
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Recently, it has become increasingly popular among Saudi students to study abroad. There are, for example, currently 58,726 Saudi students studying at the university level in the United States. During their study abroad (SA) journey, when they wish to say something to someone, they need to determine the situationally-appropriate utterances: What can be said, to whom, where, when, and how. From the interlanguage pragmatic (ILP) perspective, the SA context is assumed to provide more opportunities to communicate with native speakers, and these opportunities are believed to lead to pragmatic gains (Kinginger, 2008, 2009).Guided by five research questions, this study investigated …
The Generalizability Of Two Rating Scales Of Executive Function Across Parent And Self-Reports In A School-Based Adolescent Sample, Leah Singh

Forty-two adolescents ages 12 to 17 enrolled in a rural public school and one of their parents participated in the study. For each adolescent-parent dyad, 2 total scores of executive function and 6 subscale scores hypothesized to measure the same theoretical constructs were calculated and scores were submitted to several Generalizability theory analyses to evaluate the instrument effect, rater effect, dimension effect, and all interactions on total scores and subscale scores. The resulting dependability coefficients were …

Characteristics Of Smoking Oncology Patients In A Community Cancer Center: A Study Of Individual Differences, Amy Susan Farrell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Cigarette smoking can seriously impede cancer treatment and leads to poorer treatment response. Fortunately, even when patients have cancer, smoking cessation has significant benefits. However, there have not been many successful well-controlled studies assessing smoking cessation interventions in oncology settings. The present study aimed to expand upon the current literature by exploring sample characteristics and individual differences in this understudied population. Data were collected from 649 adult participants at a mid-South community-based cancer center. Three measures were developed and subjected to factor analysis to assess level of health literacy, perceived stigma, and oncology-related triggers in this sample. These variables were …

Personal Health Records And Their Impact On Breast Cancer Screening Among Women, Hyunmin Kim
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Screening for breast cancer, the most common cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death, facilitates early detection and timely treatment that can reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality. Increasingly, health information technology, including personal health records (PHRs) which contain detailed health information, has been suggested as having the potential to improve outcomes and reduce disparities in health care. Updated and relevant health information can help at-risk women participate in breast cancer screening and make appropriate clinical decisions. This dissertation consists of three essays that explore health information seeking behaviors of women at potential risk of breast cancer through …
Big Top Labor: Life And Labor In The Circus World, Andrea Ringer
Big Top Labor: Life And Labor In The Circus World, Andrea Ringer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
By the turn of the twentieth century, circuses had established themselves as entertainment giants throughout the United States and much of Europe. With thousands of workers and animals traveling every day in the “tented city,” the circus constituted a unique workplace. The circus was also a highly transient workplace, with a long history of exploiting its workers. As the golden age of the circus began in the 1870s, marked by a move to the railroad shows and use of big top tents, workers became part of a huge transient community that had roots only in the winter months. The show …

Non-Violent Resistance: Counter-Discourse In Irish Culture, Agnés Maillot, Jennifer Bruen
Books
Counter-discourses express new and alternative views of the world, in contrast with more established discourses which embody mainstream values, norms, beliefs and attitudes. The essays in this volume assess the role of counter-discourses as non-violent forms of resistance to the status quo in core domains of Irish social, cultural and political life. These domains encompass the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process; law enforcement, policing and surveillance; parliamentary debate and obstructionism; identity formation, marriage, divorce and the family; and institutional abuse, authoritarianism and the Catholic Church. The discourses are drawn from a diverse range of media including political and parliamentary …

METHODS: Sixteen patients scheduled for biopsy of a pancreatic mass were enrolled in an Institutional Review Board-approved study. Pulse-inversion SHI (transmitting/receiving at 2.5/1.25 MHz) was performed on a LOGIQ 9 system (GE Healthcare, Milwaukee, WI) with a 4C transducer, whereas contrast harmonic EUS (transmitting/receiving at 4.7/9.4 MHz) was performed with a radial endoscope (GF-UTC180; Olympus Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) connected to a ProSound SSD α-10 scanner (Hitachi Aloka, Tokyo, Japan). All Hands On Deck: How One University Pooled Resources To Educate And Advocate For Affordable Course Content, Lucinda Rush, Leo S. Lo, M'Hammed Abdous, Deri Draper
Libraries Faculty & Staff Publications
(First paragraph) A strong case can be made for academic library involvement in Open Educational Resources (OERs) and Affordable Course Content (ACC). Academic libraries typically employ librarians who are experts in topics aligned with OERs and ACC, including copyright, fair use, and Creative Commons (CC) licensing, as well as in finding resources to support and to map out academic curricula. Libraries are also in the unique position of having distinct and defined connections with members of all three stakeholder groups: students, faculty, and administrators.

A Belated Arrival: The Delayed Acceptance Of Musical Modernity In Irish Composition, Mark Fitzgerald
A Belated Arrival: The Delayed Acceptance Of Musical Modernity In Irish Composition, Mark Fitzgerald
Articles
The chronic lack of investment in the capital needed to foster the development of music during the period of colonial governance in Ireland and the early years of the Free State, combined with Ireland’s peripheral position in relation to the centres of musical modernism, resulted in composers in Ireland adopting modernist ideas at a very late stage, particularly in comparison with the chronology of Irish literary modernism. Previous literature on the subject of Irish musical modernism has frequently obscured any clear sense of the real extent of this delay through the conflation of the concept of “modernism” with styles that …

Funds Of Knowledge And The College Success Of First-Generation Students, Low-Income Students, And Students Of Color: A Transformative Mixed Methods Study, Delma Margot Ramos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Increases in college enrollment have led to assessments of college success. These assessments consistently reveal disparities between students from historically underserved communities and students from the majority. Specifically, first-generation to college students, low-income students, and students of color continue to experience unequitable success in college. In response to these concerns, the scholarly community engages in research that expands our understanding of college success of these students and offers solutions to bolster their success. Nonetheless, much of this work engages a deficit oriented approach that centers attention on the resources that historically underrepresented communities do not possess and attributes lower college …
