Performance Analysis Of An Active Heave Compensation System On An Offshore Supply Vessel Using The Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation, Luman Zhao, Myung-Il Roh Oct 2018

Performance Analysis Of An Active Heave Compensation System On An Offshore Supply Vessel Using The Hardware-In-The-Loop Simulation, Luman Zhao, Myung-Il Roh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The active heave compensation (AHC) system on an offshore supply vessel (OSV) plays a pivotal role in offshore installation operations by minimizing the heave motion of suspended subsea equipment, regardless of the OSV motion. In order to successfully perform its function, the AHC system should have a suitable control algorithm, and its performance must be evaluated in advance of operation. Performance analysis of the AHC system requires complicated testing procedures, and a great deal of associated equipment. In particular, such analysis is often very costly and time-consuming, and realistic conditions are typically impossible to establish in a testing environment. To …

This study investigated the effects of different dietary protein sources on the growth performance and muscle composition of the rock porgy, Oplegnathus fasciatus. Four isonitrogenous (48% crude protein) and isolipidic (10% crude lipid) diets were formulated with Peruvian fishmeal (PFM), Taiwanese fishmeal (TFM), poultry by-product meal (PBM) and meat and bone meal (MBM), respectively. The rock porgy (mean initial weight 10.58 g) were reared in 12 tanks and fed with one of the four treatment diets in triplicate for six weeks. The rock porgy fed with diet TFM had significantly higher weight gain than those fed with the other treatment …

First Observations Of Volcanic Eruption Clouds From The L1 Earth-Sun Lagrange Point By Dscovr/Epic, Simon Carn, N. A. Krotov, B. L. Fisher, C. Li, A. J. Prata Oct 2018

First Observations Of Volcanic Eruption Clouds From The L1 Earth-Sun Lagrange Point By Dscovr/Epic, Simon Carn, N. A. Krotov, B. L. Fisher, C. Li, A. J. Prata

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Volcanic sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions have been measured by ultraviolet sensors on polar‐orbiting satellites for several decades but with limited temporal resolution. This precludes studies of key processes believed to occur in young (~1–3 hr old) volcanic clouds. In 2015, the launch of the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) provided an opportunity for novel observations of volcanic eruption clouds from the first Earth‐Sun Lagrange point (L1). The L1 vantage point provides continuous observations of the sunlit Earth, offering up to eight or nine observations of volcanic SO2 clouds in the …

Patent Prior Art And Possession, Timothy R. Holbrook Oct 2018

Patent Prior Art And Possession, Timothy R. Holbrook

William & Mary Law Review

Prior art in patent law defines the set of materials that the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and courts use to determine whether the invention claimed in a patent is new and nonobvious. One would think that, as a central, crucial component of patent law, prior art would be thoroughly theorized and doctrinally coherent. Nothing could be further from the truth. The prior art provisions represent an ad hoc codification of various policies and doctrines that arose in the courts.

This Article provides coherency to this morass. It posits a prior art system that draws upon property law’s …

Time-Dependent Effects Of Orientation, Heterogeneity And Composition Determines Benthic Biological Community Recruitment Patterns On Subtidal Artificial Structures, N Hanlon, L Firth, Am Knights Oct 2018

Time-Dependent Effects Of Orientation, Heterogeneity And Composition Determines Benthic Biological Community Recruitment Patterns On Subtidal Artificial Structures, N Hanlon, L Firth, Am Knights

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Worldwide, coastlines are becoming increasingly hardened by infrastructure in response to population growth, need for space, and coastal protection. Coastal and marine infrastructure (CMI) supports fewer species and lower abundance and diversity than analogous natural rocky habitats, which can alter community composition and ecosystem functioning. Efforts to develop ecological engineering solutions that offset these negative consequences on biodiversity while retaining engineering function abound, but to date few studies have investigated the role of multiple factors simultaneously driving patterns of biotic colonisation. Here, the role of surface heterogeneity, chemical composition and surface orientation was evaluated over a 6-month period. An increase …

The Process Of Salvation In Pearl And The Great Divorce, Amber Dunai Oct 2018

The Process Of Salvation In Pearl And The Great Divorce, Amber Dunai

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Analyzes the structural, aesthetic, and thematic parallels between C.S. Lewis’s The Great Divorce and the Middle English dream vision Pearl. By exploring the tension between worldly and heavenly conceptions of justice, value, and possession in The Great Divorce and Pearl, this study demonstrates Lewis’s skill at utilizing and updating medieval source material in order to respond to twentieth-century problems.

Paradise Retold: Lewis's Reimagining Of Milton, Eden, And Eve, Benita Huffman Muth Oct 2018

Paradise Retold: Lewis's Reimagining Of Milton, Eden, And Eve, Benita Huffman Muth

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

C.S. Lewis’ interaction with John Milton’s Paradise Lost, in particular his commentary on and retelling of Milton’s version of the myth of humanity's Fall, allow us to track Lewis’s evolving stance on gender through his changing presentation of Eve-figures. His intertextual interactions with Paradise Lost and Eve change dramatically from A Preface to Paradise Lost and Perelandra to the later The Magician’s Nephew. Lewis’s fragmentation of Eve into multiple characters in The Magician’s Nephew exhibits specifically gendered changes from his early depictions of Eve, reflecting the more nuanced consideration of gender evidenced in Lewis’ later years.

Tolkien's Gimpy Heroes, Victoria Holtz Wodzak

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Tolkien, as an invalided survivor of The Somme, was well aware of the prevalence of disabled soldiers and the difficult life they faced in post-war England. He reflects many of their difficulties in his depictions of war survivors in The Children of Húrin and in The Lord of the Rings.

A Cloud Of Witnesses: External Mediation In Frodo’S Journey To Rivendell And Beyond, Carl P. Olson Oct 2018

A Cloud Of Witnesses: External Mediation In Frodo’S Journey To Rivendell And Beyond, Carl P. Olson

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Applies Rene Girard’s mimetic theory to a study of Frodo’s motivations and role models in the early phases of The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien’s incorporation of extensive background material deepens our understanding of his main characters, most of all his central hero, Frodo. Commonly described as “role-models,” external mediators work to pacify relations in a community, and act to endow individuals with meaning, purpose, and direction they otherwise would not have. By the imitation of role-models, Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry become real to Tolkien’s readers by comparison and contrast to Bilbo Baggins, Gildor and his high elves, …

A Content Analysis Of Testosterone Websites: Sex, Muscle, And Male Age-Related Thematic Differences, N Ivanov, J Vuong, P. B. Gray

Anthropology Faculty Research

Male testosterone supplementation is a large and growing industry. How is testosterone marketed to male consumers online? The present exploratory study entailed a content coding analysis of the home pages of 49 websites focused on testosterone supplementation for men in the United States. Four hypotheses concerning anticipated age-related differences in content coding were also tested: more frequent longevity content toward older men, and more frequent social dominance/physical formidability, muscle, and sex content toward younger men. Codes were created based on inductive observations and drawing upon the medical, life history, and human behavioral endocrinology literatures. Approximately half (n = 24) of …

Lay Summary: Adaptive immune proteins in mothers’ milk are more variable than innate immune proteins across populations and subsistence strategies. These results suggest that the immune defenses in milk are shaped by a mother’s environment throughout her life.

Background and objectives: Mother’s milk contains immune proteins that play critical roles in protecting the infant from infection and priming the infant’s developing immune system during early life. The composition of these molecules in milk, particularly the acquired immune proteins, is thought to reflect a mother’s immunological exposures throughout her life. In this study, we examine the composition of innate …

Teaching Science Through Inquiry Based Field Experiences Using Orientation And Mobility, Danene K. Fast, Tiffany A. Wild Oct 2018

Teaching Science Through Inquiry Based Field Experiences Using Orientation And Mobility, Danene K. Fast, Tiffany A. Wild

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Instruction in science can be difficult for students with visual impairments due to the use of visual instruction that is often used for conceptual understanding. Pedagogical approaches to teaching science continue to evolve, with inquiry-based science instruction as a primary instructional method used in current classrooms.

In teaching students with visual impairments, inquiry is a strategy that has been traditionally been used in orientation and mobility (O&M) instruction, in an effort to teach students with vision loss to explore and make conclusions about their environments through the use of all senses.

The purpose of this review is to outline how …

Mediating Religious Literacy Among Primary School Children In Gujarat: Classroom As A Liminal Space, Kiran Vinod Bhatia Oct 2018

Mediating Religious Literacy Among Primary School Children In Gujarat: Classroom As A Liminal Space, Kiran Vinod Bhatia

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Articulation of religious guidelines in the political milieu never takes place in a disembodied form; rather politically inscribed religious discourses are embedded within and conveyed through specific institutional channels, including media organizations and education institutions. My experiences of working as a media educator in villages in Gujarat have helped me understand how the learning of such discriminatory practices begin early as students use various linguistic and socio-cultural cues in order to make sense of the society. A classroom, however, provides the required space to entertain differences such that we can delimit the social hierarchies that are naturalized in the minds …

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Many prescriptions written are not evidence-based, resulting in unnecessary morbidity and mortality. Media literacy may help medical trainees optimize evidence-based decision-making. In this study, we aimed to assess feasibility, acceptability, and initial efficacy of a media literacy prescribing program. We recruited 30 medical students, who completed animated video modules about pharmaceutical marketing and prescribing. We used a process evaluation and open-ended items to assess feasibility and acceptability, and knowledge tests before and after the intervention to assess efficacy. The program was feasible to implement and well-accepted. Knowledge and attitude targets around evidence-based prescribing and drug marketing improved after the intervention.

We conducted a cross sectional seroprevalence study of camelpox in Amibara and Awash Fentale districts in Afar region of Ethiopia from November 2014 to May 2015. In addition, participatory epidemiology (PE) was conducted to identify seasonal occurrence of the disease in the study districts. Blood samples were collected from 384 dromedary camels from 31 herds distributed in five pastoral associations (PAs) in the two districts. Serum samples were separated from the blood samples and tested for the presence …

Effects Of Hearing Loss On General Cognitive Health And Social Auditory Lifestyle Within The Older Population, Sawyer Milam, Scott Seeman Oct 2018

Effects Of Hearing Loss On General Cognitive Health And Social Auditory Lifestyle Within The Older Population, Sawyer Milam, Scott Seeman

AuD Capstone Projects - Communication Sciences and Disorders

Hearing loss is a common medical condition associated with the elderly. Its impact on general cognitive health has been extensively studied, along with its association with social auditory lifestyle. Hearing loss has been associated with a decline in both aspects (Lin, 2011a; Wu and Bentler, 2012), however, studies involving all three of these factors have yet to be performed. Further research is needed to encompass how these three facets, when combined, affect the elderly population. A literature review of 21 articles was conducted in order to reveal how hearing loss is associated with general cognitive health and social auditory lifestyle.

Lethal And Repellent Effects Of The Botanical P-Anisaldehyde On Musca Domestica (Diptera: Muscidae), Allan T. Showler, Jessica L.. Harlien

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

The house fly, Musca domestica L., is a globally distributed nuisance and disease-carrying urban and livestock pest. Control mostly relies on synthetic insecticides but resistance to them has become problematic. p-Anisaldehyde, a compound found in many edible plants, was assessed for its effects on different life stages of M. domestica. Whereas p-anisaldehyde, applied as an adult contact spray, caused >80% mortality by 30 min at a 30% concentration, egg mortality on treated substrate was complete at 0.1%, and the LC90 was 0.024%. Only 0.5 and 1 ml of 1.5% p-anisaldehyde mixed into 100 g of cow manure curtailed pupation. When …
