The Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase As A Potential Diagnostic Marker For Beta-Thalassemia And Its Correlation With Hemoglobin Profiles, Duaa K. Mohammed, Layla O. Farhan
Baghdad Science Journal
The erythropoietic dysfunction and iron insufficiency associated with β -Thalassemia (β -TH) underscore the importance of augmenting traditional diagnostic techniques with independent biomarkers, beyond standard panels. This single-center case–control study (n = 120 β -TH major, 55; β -TH intermedia, 25; control, 40) examined whether circulating phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) distinguishes patients from controls and correlates with hemoglobin fractions. The serum PI3K was significantly higher in β -TH (p < 0.001), with excellent discrimination tested in serum (AUC = 0.934; optimal cut-off > 1301 pg/mL; sensitivity 100%, specificity 80%). In a multivariable model, HbA2% and HbF% were both positively and independently associated with PI3K. These results are biologically consistent with the interaction of erythroid …

Dynamic Input Layering To Animate A Virtual Avatar Over A Mobile Video Capture Using Concurrent Front-Camera Tracking, Audio, And Ui Commands, Krzysztof P. Bednarz
Defensive Publications Series
This publication describes a mobile software architecture and method for real-time animation of a virtual avatar over a live or recorded video stream captured from a mobile device. The system concurrently utilises a back-facing for environmental video capture, a front-facing camera for facial tracking, and an audio input for lip synchronisation. A synchronisation and buffering mechanism aligns video, audio, and animation data streams in near real time, ensuring temporally coherent avatar animation over live or recorded video. These heterogeneous inputs are dynamically layered and synchronised to drive a two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) avatar while supporting both local recording and …

“Big River People”: Human-Nature Interactions In The Mekong And Columbia River Basins, Andrew M. Stone
Forest and Society
The Mekong and Columbia Rivers are a world apart. Yet rivers instantiate and manifest critical ecological relations. This paper draws on qualitative interviews, community dialogues, historical documents, and ceremony-based encounters to examine political practices among "big river people'' in the Mekong and Columbia River basins. It interprets participants' narratives and actions as expressions of ontological politics, i.e., contestation of imposed realities and lifeways. Participants link environmental degradation to violations of relational ethics. Across both study groups, elders and knowledge holders describe ecological and cultural loss as forms of ongoing violence enacted through hydropower development, displacement, and resulting erasure of ways …

Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Background Acute pyogenic flexor tenosynovitis (APFT) is typically managed operatively, but there is growing interest in nonoperative treatments using intravenous (IV) antibiotics to reduce surgical complications. Timely intervention is essential, as delayed treatment increases the risk of systemic, life-threatening infections. This study aimed to characterize national trends in the operative management of APFT and to compare mortality and amputation outcomes between operatively and nonoperatively managed patients. Methods A retrospective analysis was conducted using data from the TriNetX United States Collaborative Network from 2015 to 2023. Patients were identified using ICD-10 and CPT codes and categorized into operative and nonoperative cohorts, …

Leadership, Learning and Counseling Faculty Publications and Presentations
The aim of this two-part paper is to discuss the concept of symmetry and its derivatives, symmetry breaking and asymmetry, and the role they assume in elucidating the structure and processes that underlie psychosocial adaptation to traumatic experiences. To achieve this aim, in Part I, first, a cursory review of symmetry is undertaken as it applies to physics, including conservation laws, the forces of nature, and leading theories of nature. Second, the paper addresses how symmetry is perceived in biology and medicine, including symmetry within biochemical and genetic structures, the human body, and the onset of disease processes. Third, the …

Injectable, In Situ Forming Peptide Nanofiber Reinforced Composite Hydrogels For Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Shambhavi Bagewadi Ms
Theses and Dissertations
Cell therapy for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is limited by the absence of a functional substrate such as Bruch’s membrane (BM), which is critical for retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell survival and integration. Although preformed substrates have been explored, their implantation can disrupt the fragile retinal architecture, compromise ocular immune privilege and increase infection risk. To address these limitations, an injectable hydrogel capable of forming in situ was developed. The hydrogel consists of thiol-modified hyaluronic acid (HA-SH) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Peptide nanofibers were incorporated to enhance structural reinforcement. Three self-assembling peptides - RADA-16, GAGA and GAGA-YIGSR were designed and …

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel
Decades of research on Roman-period hiding complexes in the Galilee have identified 85 such complexes to date. Like the hiding complexes found in Judea, they were used as places of refuge during periods of distress under Roman rule in the country. Extensive archaeological excavations conducted in the hiding complex at Khirbat Khuwweikha, near Kafr Kanna and northwest of Nazareth, have yielded impressive finds, including pottery, glassware, metal items, coins, an ostracon and bones. Such a large quantity of diagnostic finds is rare in Galilean hiding complexes, and the assemblage attests to the use of the complex by Jews during three …

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) occur as complex mixtures, yet mixture-dependent biological effects under environmentally realistic exposure conditions remain poorly understood. We conducted multiyear (2018, 2019, 2021) continuous-flow, field-based exposures of male fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) using a low-PFAS reference well (REF; sum of measured PFAS (∑PFAS) 0.1–0.2 μg L–1) and PFAS-contaminated groundwater from a fire-training area (FTA) at Joint Base Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Dilution treatments enabled separation of concentration and mixture effects. Groundwater from well FTA1 was perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) dominated (∑PFAS 10–31 μg L–1), whereas groundwater from well FTA2 had higher concentrations and …

Effects Of Normothermic Hepatic Ischemia–Reperfusion Injury On The Hepatic Disposition Of Arachidonic Acid And Its Cytochrome P450-Generated Metabolites In Rats, Vindhya Edpuganti, Reza Mehvar
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Purpose
Cytochrome P450 (P450) metabolites of arachidonic acid (AA) are potential therapeutic targets in ischemia–reperfusion (IR) injury, yet their disposition and actions in hepatic IR are unknown. Cellular AA and its P450 metabolites are primarily bound to lipid membranes, resulting in negligible free concentrations. This study investigates how hepatic IR injury impacts the disposition of free AA and its major P450 metabolites in rats.
Methods
Rats underwent 60 min of partial (70%) ischemia or sham surgery, followed by 5 min, 3 h, or 24 h of reperfusion. The effects of IR injury on free concentrations of AA and its major …
A Wildlife Crossing Proposal For Mountain Lions In San Luis Obispo County, Charles Carmichael
A Wildlife Crossing Proposal For Mountain Lions In San Luis Obispo County, Charles Carmichael
Master's Projects and Capstones
California mountain lions are facing threats such as wildlife vehicle-collisions (WVC) and habitat fragmentation from roads that act as barriers to movement. Cuesta Pass in San Luis Obispo County is a stretch of Highway 101 that acts as a barrier and results in WVC for numerous species, including mountain lions. A literature review on predictors for mountain lion usage of wildlife crossings suggests crossing location as an influential variable for predicting whether a crossing will be used. A synthesis on findings from four studies found mountain lions to use underpasses, including culverts, at a combined rate of 0.72 times per …

Cyberspatial Cartographies: Mapping Digital Nationhood Within The California-Punjabi Diaspora., Saihajpratap Singh Bajwa
Master's Theses
This research investigates the phenomenon of digital nationhood, the idea that a new form of community is actively produced through interactions taking place within digital social networks and forums. These spaces function as more than repositories of information or cultural archives; they are living ecosystems in which identity is constructed through mutual encounters among members of a diaspora, where shared references, meanings, and concepts proliferate across multiplex networks. The central questions animating this inquiry are: can a nation exist without a territory, and are these encounters producing what we might conceive of as a digital nation?

Adaptive Reuse As Sustainability: Reconciling The Crises Of Functionalism And Environmental Conservation In Copenhagen And San Francisco, Samuel J. Fernandez
Adaptive Reuse As Sustainability: Reconciling The Crises Of Functionalism And Environmental Conservation In Copenhagen And San Francisco, Samuel J. Fernandez
Master's Theses
Sustainability is the buzzword for modern global development. In the age of rapidly growing populations, unsustainable building practices, and an ever-present climate crisis, there must be a reorientation in global urban development practices. While experts tend to tout one sustainable initiative as a catch-all solution to the above crises, a multidimensional problem cannot be solved with a one-dimensional approach. In other words, sustainable development can only be achieved through a combination of different practices and approaches. This case study seeks to present adaptive reuse as a viable reaction to the climate crisis, but one that requires a combination of other …
The Feather Of The Quill: How Folklore Shapes Human Relationships With Wildlife, Taylor Breeanne Nelson
The Feather Of The Quill: How Folklore Shapes Human Relationships With Wildlife, Taylor Breeanne Nelson
Master's Theses
This thesis examines how folklore and cultural phenomena shape human relationships with wildlife, arguing that the stories a society tells about animals are not merely reflective of its values but are constitutive of them. Drawing on narrative research methods sourced from literature and academic journals and interviews with academics, conservationists, and community members, this project examines the role of animal folklore.
I discuss how narratives around wildlife evolved alongside the development of the United States, arguing that the beginnings of mainstream American conservation not only displaced existing communities but also erased the sophisticated human-animal relationships their traditions had long sustained. …

Structure And Diversity Of Play Behavior In Juvenile Belding's Ground Squirrels, Paul O'Driscoll Ii
Master's Theses
Play behavior is ubiquitous among juvenile mammals and can promote motor, social, and cognitive development, providing multiple adaptive benefits to young animals in some cases. The structure of play can be linked to the benefits it confers on individuals. I evaluated the structure of play in juvenile Belding’s ground squirrels (Urocitellus beldingi), a species for which multiple adaptive benefits of play have been identified. I compared juvenile play in U. beldingi to adult sexual and aggressive behavior to determine and classify similarities between juvenile play and adult behavior. I evaluated diversity in the behaviors expressed during play interactions and diversity …

Megafauna extinction during the Holocene has been both caused and amplified by climatic changes and human influence. By the last half century, large carnivores were diminished in Europe and the United States, but policies increasingly addressed species decline and their territories expanded. This research examined large carnivore rewilding across the European Union and United States, specifically for rewilding brown bears, Ursus arctos, in historic habitat. Next, case studies for the health status of climate-impacted whitebark pine, Pinus albicaulis, a high energy food for bears, was assessed. Ultimately, research case studies, human perspective surveys, and the California Department of Education content …
Herd Conditions And Food Security: Evidence From Kenya, Kira J. Enriquez
Herd Conditions And Food Security: Evidence From Kenya, Kira J. Enriquez
Master's Theses
Food insecurity is worsening across Kenya's Arid and Semi-Arid Lands, where over three million people currently face acute hunger. Among pastoral communities in these regions, livestock are the central productive asset and primary food source. When herds deteriorate, households face falling milk production and the erosion of assets that would otherwise buffer consumption during difficult periods. This paper tests whether livestock body condition and rangeland forage quality predict household food coping behavior, and whether those relationships differ above and below a Micawber-style herd size threshold. Using a panel of 232 pastoralist households surveyed across five ASAL counties between 2021 and …
