Brain traumatic injury (BTI) is one of the causes of death and disability worldwide that affects people regardless of sex, age, income and social status, race, or nationality. In patients with brain traumatic injury, one of the problems that occurs is Diffuse Axonal Injury (DAI) that can produce a direct clinical effect, leading to coma and death. Adrenocorticotropin analogues (ACTH) is one of neuroprotective therapy in brain injury. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of ACTH analogue on the clinical output (Glasgow Outcome Score/GOS and Bartle Index) in patients with DAI at hospital discharge, 3 months …

Analysis Of Prophylactic Antibiotics Usage In Caesarean Section Delivery, Binti Muzayyanah, Yulistiani Yulistiani, Didik Hasmono, Nuraida Wisudani
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Caesarean section is the delivery through a surgical incision in the abdomen and uterus with various risks, such as Surgical Site Infection (SSI) which either occurs rapidly (24-48 hours postoperatively) or delayed. To reduce the risk of various post-cesarean section infections, prophylactic antibiotics are given. The administration of prophylactic antibiotics with recommended regimens, such as in developed countries as in the United States and Europe, with first generation of cephalosporins has not been applied in Dr. Iskak Hospital, Tulungagung. This hospital still used other types of antibiotics, such as cefotaxime or ceftriaxone. In addition, for several reasons, prophylactic antibiotics were …

Red Rosella (Hibiscus Sabdariffa Linn.) Petal Brew Is Able To Reduce The Sprague Dawley Mda Rate In Rats Exposed To Waste Cooking Oil, Arya Ulilalbab, Eni Maskanah
Folia Medica Indonesiana
Food and snacks sold are usually fried using oil that has been used for frying repeatedly. Oil that is repeatedly used for frying is often called waste cooking oil. Waste cooking oil is a source of exogenous free radicals that can trigger oxidative stress. To prevent this, sufficient antioxidant intake is needed. One source of antioxidants is red rosella. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of giving red rosella petals on the conditions of oxidative stress in Sprague dawley rats exposed to waste cooking oil through MDA testing. The research method used was Completely Randomized Design …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
© 2018 Harvey, Agostini, Wada, Inaba and Hall-Spencer. Ocean acidification is expected to negatively impact many calcifying marine organisms by impairing their ability to build their protective shells and skeletons, and by causing dissolution and erosion. Here we investigated the large predatory "triton shell" gastropod Charonia lampas in acidified conditions near CO2 seeps off Shikine-jima (Japan) and compared them with individuals from an adjacent bay with seawater pH at present-day levels (outside the influence of the CO2 seep). By using computed tomography we show that acidification negatively impacts their thickness, density, and shell structure, causing visible deterioration to the shell …
Genome-Wide Screening Identifies Genes And Biological Processes Implicated In Chemoresistance And Oncogene-Induced Apoptosis, Tengyu Ko
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Anti-proliferative responses such as senescence and apoptosis are often used by normal cells to combat oncogenic insults and to prevent tumorigenesis. However, oncogenic mutations are frequently found in cancers, suggesting that additional mutations may occur to facilitate the bypass of these anti-proliferative responses. It is believed that some of these additional mutations may also contribute to the chemoresistance of cancers. This dissertation focused on identifying novel genes and biological processes implicated in chemoresistance and tumorigenesis.
Cisplatin-based chemotherapeutic regimens are frequently used for treatments of solid tumors. However, tumor cells may have inherent or acquired resistance to cisplatin, and the underlying …

Happy Family Company, Jaden Keeling
B.A./B.S. Practicum Group Exhibit (ART 499)
Happy Family Company was inspired by the people I meet on mission trips I take every two years. It is a wonderful experience that I encourage everyone I meet to partake in. Although mission trips are usually emotionally exhausting, overall the mood I experience is happiness. There is happiness within the families, as well as excitement and joy when they see our team. I revisit old friends and make new ones. My Jamaican friends are positive people who do not dwell on what they do not have.
This is the inspiration I wanted to capture in my brand. My brand …

Self-reported height and weight, if accurate, provide a simple and economical method to track changes in body weight over time. Literature suggests adults tend to under-report their own weight and that the gap between self-reported weight and actual weight increases with obesity. This study investigates the extent of discrepancy in self-reported height, weight, and subsequent Body Mass Index (BMI) versus actual measurements in young adults. Physically measured and self-reported height and weight were taken from 1562 students. Male students marginally overestimated height, while females were closer to target. Males, on average, closely self-reported weight. Self-reported anthropometrics remained statistically correlated to …

When Strange Bedfellows Go All In: A Template For Implementing Non-Lethal Strategies Aimed At Reducing Carnivore Predation Of Livestock, Julie K. Young, John Steuber, Alexandra Few, Adam Baca, Zack Strong
Wildland Resources Faculty Publications
In the Rocky Mountains of the USA, abundances and distributions of grizzly bear Ursus arctos and gray wolf Canis lupus have increased (Bangs et al., 2001; Nicholson & Hendricks, 2018). This has led to increased predation of livestock in areas where livestock producers have not needed to implement conflict prevention methods in recent history. Lethal removal of carnivores that kill livestock remains a common source of carnivore mortalities (Woodroffe, 2001; Broekhuis, Cushman & Elliot, 2017). In the USA, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Wildlife Services (USDA-WS) is often asked by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service or a State’s wildlife …

Friends Of Animals V. United States Fish & Wildlife Service, Bradley E. Tinker
Friends Of Animals V. United States Fish & Wildlife Service, Bradley E. Tinker
Public Land & Resources Law Review
In Friends of Animals v. United States Fish & Wildlife Service, the Ninth Circuit held that the plain language of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act allows for the removal of one species of bird to benefit another species. Friends of Animals argued that the Service’s experiment permitting the taking of one species––the barred owl––to advance the conservation of a different species––the northern spotted owl––violated the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The court, however, found that the Act delegates broad implementing discretion to the Secretary of the Interior, and neither the Act nor the underlying international conventions limit the taking of …

An Expanded Modern Coexistence Theory For Empirical Applications, Stephen P. Ellner, Robin E. Snyder, Peter B. Adler, Giles J. Hooker
Ecology Center Publications
Understanding long‐term coexistence of numerous competing species is a longstanding challenge in ecology. Progress requires determining which processes and species differences are most important for coexistence when multiple processes operate and species differ in many ways. Modern coexistence theory (MCT), formalized by Chesson, holds out the promise of doing that, but empirical applications remain scarce. We argue that MCT's mathematical complexity and subtlety have obscured the simplicity and power of its underlying ideas and hindered applications. We present a general computational approach that extends our previous solution for the storage effect to all of standard MCT's spatial and temporal coexistence …

Orderliness Of Visual Stimulus Motion Mediates Sensorimotor Coordination, Joshua L. Haworth, Nicholas Stergiou
Orderliness Of Visual Stimulus Motion Mediates Sensorimotor Coordination, Joshua L. Haworth, Nicholas Stergiou
Journal Articles
We explored the coupling of gaze and postural sway to the motion of a visual stimulus, to further understand sensorimotor coordination. Visual stimuli consisted of a horizontally oscillating red dot, moving with periodic (sine), chaotic, or aperiodic (brown noise) temporal structure. Cross Recurrence Quantification Analysis (cRQA) was used to investigate the coupling between each measured signal with the time series of the visual stimulus position. The cRQA parameter of percent determinism indicated similar strength of coupling of gaze with either periodic or chaotic motion structures, yet weaker coupling to aperiodic stimulus motion. The cRQA parameter of Maxline indicated a particular …

Neurobehavioral Evaluation Of Mice Dosed With Water Hemlock Green Seeds And Tubers, Camila F. P. Orlando-Goulart, Kevin D. Welch, James A. Pfister, Daniel S. Goulart, Adilson D. Damasceno, Stephen T. Lee
Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)
Water hemlock are plants of the genus Cicuta and are toxic to animals and humans. The primary toxin is cicutoxin, which is abundant in the tubers, but less abundant in other parts of the plant. Other cicutoxin-like compounds, such as cicutols, which may also contribute to the toxicity of water hemlock, are more abundant in non-tuber plant parts. The objective of this study was to determine the toxicity of different parts of water hemlock and characterize their effects on motor function/coordination in mice. An aqueous extract of green seeds, dry seeds, tubers, flowers and stems of water hemlock was dosed …

Position Keeping Control Of An Autonomous Sailboat, C Viel, U Vautier, J Wan, L Jaulin
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This paper addresses the problem of reaching and keeping a target position for a sailboat. A method to control sail angle is proposed, using an adaptive adjustment of the sail to regulate the acceleration of the sailboat. A tacking strategy is defined to navigate into the wind, arrive upwind to slow down the boat and then to stay close to the target point. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The stability of the sailboat using the proposed control has been proven.

Background: Metformin, an oral anti-hyperglycemic drug which inhibits mitochondrial complex I and oxidative phosphorylation has been reported to correlate with improved outcomes in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) and other cancers. This effect is postulated to occur through disruption of tumor-driven metabolic and immune dysregulation in the tumor microenvironment (TME). We report new findings on the impact of metformin on the tumor and immune elements of the TME from a clinical trial of metformin in HNSCC. Methods: Human papilloma virus-(HPV-) tobacco+ mucosal HNSCC samples (n = 12) were compared to HPV+ oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) samples (n …
The Supply Side Determinants Of Territory And Conflict, Jordan Adamson, Erik O. Kimbrough
The Supply Side Determinants Of Territory And Conflict, Jordan Adamson, Erik O. Kimbrough
ESI Working Papers
What determines the geographic extent of territory? We microfound and extend Boulding’s “Loss of Strength Gradient” to predict the extensive and intensive margins of conflict across space. We show how economies of scale in the production of violence and varying costs of projecting violence at a distance combine to affect the geographic distribution of conflict and territory. We test and probe the boundaries of this model in an experiment varying the fixed costs of conflict entry. As predicted, higher fixed costs increase the probability of exclusive territories; median behavior closely tracks equilibrium predictions in all treatments.
