Filling The Gaps In Civil Society The Role Of The Catholic Church In Latin American Democratization, John Thiede, Matthew Carnes
Filling The Gaps In Civil Society The Role Of The Catholic Church In Latin American Democratization, John Thiede, Matthew Carnes
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
In this paper, we seek to draw lessons about the roles that religious institutions can play in promoting democracy in deeply divided societies by examining the experience of the Catholic Church in Latin America. We focus on the cases of Chile and El Salvador, two countries where the Catholic Church played a decisive role in advancing democracy after autocratic military rule. These two cases illustrate where theology and action productively promoted social change in highly conflictual societies. We note challenges to democracy in the region, but also new opportunities in the era of the first Latin American pope, Francis.

The family Rivulidae is the fourth most diverse clade of Neotropical fishes. Together with some genera of the related African family Nothobranchiidae, many rivulids exhibit a characteristic annual life cycle, with diapausing eggs and delayed embryonic development, which allows them to survive in the challenging seasonal ponds that they inhabit. Rivulidae also includes two species known as the only the self-fertilizing vertebrates and some species with internal fertilization. The first goal of this article is to review the systematics of the family considering phylogenetic relationships and synapomorphies of subfamilial clades, thus unifying information that is dispersed throughout the literature. Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Bernard-Soulier syndrome (BSS) is a hereditary macrothrombocytopenia caused by defects in GPIb-IX-V complex. The mechanism of large platelet formation remains unclear. Currently, megakaryocytes (MKs) can be generated from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to study platelet production under pharmacologic or genetic manipulations. In this study, we generated iPSC lines from 2 patients with mutations in different genes (GP1BA and GP1BB: termed BSS-A and BSS-B, respectively), iPSCs were then differentiated into MKs and platelets. In vitro iPSCs-derived platelets were stained for circumferential tubulin and measured the diameters (N = 500 per condition). BSS-iPSCs produced abnormal proplatelets with thick shafts and tips, …

Geography
Predicting the seasonal dynamics of ecosystem carbon fluxes is challenging in broadleaved evergreen forests because of their moderate climates and subtle changes in canopy phenology. We assessed the climatic and biotic drivers of the seasonality of net ecosystem-atmosphere CO2 exchange (NEE) of a eucalyptus-dominated forest near Sydney, Australia, using the eddy covariance method. The climate is characterised by a mean annual precipitation of 800mm and a mean annual temperature of 18°C, hot summers and mild winters, with highly variable precipitation. In the 4-year study, the ecosystem was a sink each year (-225gCm-2yr-1 on average, with a standard deviation of 108gCm-2yr-1); …
