Faculty Perspectives On Redesigning Classrooms With Active Learning Technology Tools, Zhanat Alma Burch
Faculty Perspectives On Redesigning Classrooms With Active Learning Technology Tools, Zhanat Alma Burch
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Effective integration of active learning technology tools in classrooms is a key component of 21st century higher education classrooms. Challenged with outdated technology access and traditional classrooms, a local university in North Carolina initiated a strategic plan to update classrooms and laboratories with the 21st century technology. The problem of the study was that limited information existed regarding faculty perceptions regarding benefits of and barriers to integrating active learning technology tools. The goal of this study was to uncover the faculty members' views and perceptions about redesigning classrooms with the active learning technology tools. The technology acceptance model (TAM) framework …
Meta-Analysis Of The Effectiveness Magnitude Of Hypnosis On Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Treatment, Gueorgui Klissourov
Meta-Analysis Of The Effectiveness Magnitude Of Hypnosis On Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Treatment, Gueorgui Klissourov
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The increased intensity of modern life and the experiences in combat situations has brought on enormous stress and has led many individuals to develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Hypnosis is one of the treatment methods available to professionals and has been proven to provide fast, reliable results in multiple studies. Despite these results, the lack of understanding of the physiological effects of hypnosis on the brain has prevented its use as a common treatment method for PTSD. By examining the differences between the effectiveness of hypnosis in military and civilian populations, the aim of this meta-analysis was to isolate the …

Behavioral Outcomes Of The Boss Teaching Program With Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Mick Needham
Behavioral Outcomes Of The Boss Teaching Program With Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Mick Needham
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Despite an abundance of research on interventions to improve social skills of young children with intellectual disabilities (ID), there is limited research on interventions aimed at improving social skills of adults with ID. The purpose of this single-subject study was to evaluate the outcomes of the Behavioral Opportunities for Social Skills (BOSS) teaching program for adults with ID. The theoretical framework for this study was Skinner's operant conditioning which incorporates the principles of applied behavior analysis, reinforcement, and operant extinction. After direct support professionals were trained in the BOSS teaching program, research questions were used to determine (a) changes in …
Modelling Spatial Heterogeneity In The Haemodynamic Response With Implications For Neuroimaging, Russell Gore
Modelling Spatial Heterogeneity In The Haemodynamic Response With Implications For Neuroimaging, Russell Gore
Theses
Background: A foundational assumption of neuroimaging is the central volume principle (CVP): the mean transit time of oxygen particles in the brain equals the ratio of blood vessel volume to blood flow. Changes in mean transit time are expected to cause detectable changes in images produced by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). The CVP assumes a uniform distribution of transit times, but in fact blood vessel volumes are spatially heterogeneous. This thesis examines the implications of spatial heterogeneity for fMRI research.
Methods: An amended form of the CVP that accounts for spatial heterogeneity is developed and parameterised using empirical data. …

Experimental Measurement Of Dolphin Thrust Generated During A Tail Stand Using Dpiv, Frank E. Fish, Terrie M. Williams, Erica Sherman, Yae Eun Moon, Vicki Wu, Timothy Wei
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Estimation of force generated by dolphins has long been debated. The problem was that indirect estimates of force production for dolphins resulted in low values that could not be validated. Bubble digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) measured hydrodynamic force production for swimming dolphins and demonstrated high force production. To validate the bubble DPIV and reconcile force production measurements, two bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) performing tail stands were measured with bubble DPIV. Microbubbles were generated from a finely porous hose and compressed air source. Displacement of the bubbles by the propulsive motions of the dolphin was tracked with a …
Qualified Immunity And Fault, John F. Preis
Qualified Immunity And Fault, John F. Preis
Law Faculty Publications
As a general rule, liability correlates with fault. That is, when the law declares a person liable, it is usually because the person is, in some sense, at fault. Similarly, when the law does not declare a person liable, it is usually because the person is not deemed to be at fault. There are exceptions, of course. A storekeeper who unwittingly sells a product that harms another may be held liable under the doctrine of strict liability, despite her blameless conduct. Similarly, a website owner who knowingly permits others to post defamatory statements on her website is not liable, despite …
The Parity Principle, Luke P. Norris
The Parity Principle, Luke P. Norris
Law Faculty Publications
The Supreme Court has interpreted the Federal Arbitration Act of 1925 (FAA) in a broad way that has allowed firms to widely privatize disputes with workers and consumers. The resulting expansive growth of American arbitration law has left commentators both concerned about the structural inequalities that permeate the regime and in search of an effective limiting principle. This Article develops such a limiting principle from the text and history of the FAA itself. The Article reinterprets the text and history of section 1 of the statute, which, correctly read, excludes individual employee-employer disputes from the statute’s coverage. The Article argues …

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of A Diabetes Self-Management Education Program On The Hba1c In Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Katherine Schoo
DNP Projects
Introduction
Diabetes has become an epidemic in the United States. More than 30.3 29 million Americans are living with the disease, while an additional 84.1 million Americans are living with prediabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2018). Standards set forth by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) describe comprehensive and individualized self-management education and treatment as part of their guidelines for the management of diabetes (ADA, 2018). The “Active Steps for Diabetes” program is an example of a diabetes self-management education (DSME) program that supports national recommendations made by the ADA.

Evaluating The Need For A Family Nurse Practitioner Fast Track As An Alternative To The Emergency Department, Anna Czartorski
DNP Projects
PURPOSE: Emergency Departments (ED) are a vital part of healthcare and they provide lifesaving services to patients that are acutely ill. However, the latest data shows that 42% of ED visits are related to medical complaints that can be managed by a primary care provider (PCP). The purpose of this study was to assess the need for a fast track within a midwestern suburban Emergency Department (ED) that is based upon the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) fast track model.
METHODS: This study was a descriptive study examining the usage of the ED for non-urgent medical complaints from January 1 …
Stakeholder Dialogues And Virtual Reality For The German Energiewende, Arne Spieker
Stakeholder Dialogues And Virtual Reality For The German Energiewende, Arne Spieker
Journal of Dispute Resolution
The German energy system is in a complete overhaul. In the future energy will mainly derive from renewable sources. While in general this is largely socially accepted, new long-range power-lines, needed to distribute that energy, disquiet local communities and lead to political friction. Using stakeholder dialogues, responsible authorities and transmission operators try to direct escalating debates back onto a constructive track. This Article describes the inclusion of public participation in the recently adopted grid expansion acceleration act (NABEG) and a best practice stakeholder dialogue for a high voltage d.c. link. It contextualizes those efforts into the broader debate over citizen …

A Novel Supercritical Co2-Based Decellularization Method For Maintaining Scaffold Hydration And Mechanical Properties, Michael A. Matthews, Tarek Shazly, Rachel M. Handleton, Dominic M. Casali
Faculty Publications
Decellularized tissues are commonly utilized as tissue engineering scaffolds. Decellularization by extended exposure to aqueous detergents can damage the microstructure or deposit cytotoxic residue. Supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) has been proposed for decellularization, but reportedly causes dehydration and scaffold embrittlement.
Presented herein is a novel decellularization method that preserves matrix hydration state and mechanical properties. Over 97% of the water in porcine aorta is maintained by presaturating scCO2 with water; however, complete decellularization was not attained by any process utilizing only scCO2. Instead, a novel hybrid method is presented that combines a brief (48 h) exposure of tissue to aqueous …
Can Increasing Grass-Fungal Endophyte Symbiotic Diversity Enhance Grassland Ecosystem Functioning?, Mahtaab Bagherzadeh
Can Increasing Grass-Fungal Endophyte Symbiotic Diversity Enhance Grassland Ecosystem Functioning?, Mahtaab Bagherzadeh
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
The relationship between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning is important in maintaining agroecosystem sustainability. Plant-microbe symbioses, such as exists between the grass tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceum) and the asexual fungal endophyte Epichloë coenophiala, can be utilized to enhance agroecosystem functions, such as herbivore resistance. “Novel” E. coenophiala strains that vary in the production of mammal- and insect-toxic compounds have been identified, inserted into tall fescue cultivars, and are planted in pastures globally. Novel fungal endophyte-tall fescue associations may have divergent ecosystem function effects. This study assessed effects of different fescue-endophyte symbiotic combinations on pasture ecosystem function, including aboveground …

Engineering Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles To Be Used As Nanofertilizers, Zeinah Elhaj Baddar
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
Zinc deficient soils, or soils with low Zn bioavailability, are widespread, which exacerbates Zn deficiency in human as crops grown on these soils have low Zn content. Often crop yields are also compromised. Fertilizers based on soluble Zn salts often have limited efficacy in such soils. In this research, we evaluate the performance of polymer coated and bare ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) in an attempt to overcome limitations of soluble Zn salts in alkaline soils. We first synthesized 20-30 nm bare ZnO NPs with different surface chemistries to impart colloidal stability to the particles. Bare ZnO were treated in phosphate solution …
Characterizing Nitrogen Loss And Greenhouse Gas Flux Across An Intensification Gradient In Diversified Vegetable Systems, Debendra Shrestha
Characterizing Nitrogen Loss And Greenhouse Gas Flux Across An Intensification Gradient In Diversified Vegetable Systems, Debendra Shrestha
Theses and Dissertations--Plant and Soil Sciences
The area of vegetable production is growing rapidly world-wide, as are efforts to increase production on existing lands in these labor- and input-intensive systems. Yet information on nutrient losses, greenhouse gas emissions, and input efficiency is lacking. Sustainable intensification of these systems requires knowing how to optimize nutrient and water inputs to improve yields while minimizing negative environmental consequences. This work characterizes soil nitrogen (N) dynamics, nitrate (NO3¯) leaching, greenhouse gas emissions, and crop yield in five diversified vegetable systems spanning a gradient of intensification that is characterized by inputs, tillage and rotational fallow periods. The study systems …
Fair Use & Fair Play: Olympic Marketing In The Information Age, Alex Locke
Fair Use & Fair Play: Olympic Marketing In The Information Age, Alex Locke
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
The note critiques the overreach of intellectual property protections surrounding the Olympics, which have led to hyperlitigation, stifled public engagement, and disproportionately harmed smaller entities while benefiting large corporations. It proposes reforming the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act by incorporating a fair use framework, modeled after the Copyright Royalty Board, to balance intellectual property enforcement with public participation and transparency. This approach aims to address the challenges posed by ambush marketing and sponsorship protection in the modern media landscape while ensuring equitable opportunities for all stakeholders.
Not Forgetting Just Obscuring: American And European Attempts To Maintain Privacy In The Digital Age, John Corrado
Not Forgetting Just Obscuring: American And European Attempts To Maintain Privacy In The Digital Age, John Corrado
Cardozo International & Comparative Law Review
The note explores the concept of the right to obscurity as a subset of privacy rights, distinguishing it from the right to be forgotten. It examines how this right is addressed in E.U. and U.S. law, highlighting the E.U.'s robust framework under the GDPR and the more limited, sector-specific protections in the U.S. The analysis emphasizes the importance of balancing individual privacy rights with freedom of expression and the public interest, advocating for a proactive approach to data control rather than retroactive deletion.

Matal V. Tam-A Victory For The Slants, A Touchdown For The Redskins, But An Ambiguous Journey For The First Amendment And Trademark Law, Mark Conrad
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
Since 1946, Section 2(a) of the Lanham Act, the law governing trademarks, prohibited the registration of trademarks deemed "immoral, deceptive, or scandalous; " or those which may "disparage" individuals. This provision was the subject of a challenge by an Asian-American dance-rock band named "The Slants" after the trademark examiner refused to register the mark because it was deemed "disparaging" to Asians. Tam, a member of the group, challenged the decision, primarily on First Amendment grounds, and the Supreme Court, in several opinions which produced a unanimous result, concluded that the provision unconstitutionally barred the registration. What was a major victory …

Pericytes Wrap Vessels Tight And Keep Blood Flowing Right: An Updated View Of The Structure And Function Of Cerebral Pericytes, David Hartmann
Pericytes Wrap Vessels Tight And Keep Blood Flowing Right: An Updated View Of The Structure And Function Of Cerebral Pericytes, David Hartmann
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
The cerebrovasculature modulates its resistance to flow in order to match blood supply with the high metabolic demand of the brain. While it is accepted that vascular smooth muscle cells are capable of modulating blood flow resistance through arterioles, whether pericytes can similarly regulate blood flow through capillaries has been a topic of debate for over 100 years. First we used new transgenic mice to characterize the structural spectrum of pericytes in the brain, and found a wide range of pericyte shapes that could be grouped into two main pericyte types. We then mapped where these “ensheathing pericytes” and “capillary …
Crop Production Costs, Profits, And Ecosystem Stewardship With Precision Agriculture, David Schimmelpfennig
Crop Production Costs, Profits, And Ecosystem Stewardship With Precision Agriculture, David Schimmelpfennig
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Ecosystem stewardship is an important goal of crop production management. The developing question has been the feasibility and profitability of best management practices (BMPs) associated with stewardship goals. Treatment-effects empirical estimates show that soybean crop ecosystem stewardship is likely to benefit from precision agriculture’s (PA) information technologies to varying degrees. After accounting for the effect of overhead expenditures on technology adoption, and input costs on operating costs and profits, we show PA technologies also affect at least six BMPs. In one comprehensive framework, PA technologies affect profits, and improve crop production management through BMPs, with benefits for ecosystem stewardship.
Distance Education And Technology Infrastructure: Strategies And Opportunities, Robert L. Moore, B. P. Fodrey
Distance Education And Technology Infrastructure: Strategies And Opportunities, Robert L. Moore, B. P. Fodrey
STEMPS Faculty Publications
Distance education provides a wealth of opportunities and areas for innovation, but it also presents unique challenges for implementation and eventual success. To mitigate these challenges, this chapter will present four critical components—systems, objectives, evaluation, and personnel—that combine into one to create a technology infrastructure that can support distance delivery. Through this chapter, e-learning leaders will gain the knowledge to not only identify key features of tools used for distance delivery, but also understand and appreciate the correlation between a holistic infrastructure approach and quality distance delivery. The absence of one of these critical components will likely result in an …

Genomic Analysis And Prediction Within A Us Public Collaborative Winter Wheat Regional Testing Nursery, Trevor W. Rife, Robert A. Graybosch, Jesse A. Poland
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
The development of inexpensive, whole-genome profiling enables a transition to allele-based breeding using genomic prediction models. These models consider alleles shared between lines to predict phenotypes and select new lines based on estimated breeding values. This approach can leverage highly unbalanced datasets that are common to breeding programs. The Southern Regional Performance Nursery (SRPN) is a public nursery established by the USDA–ARS in 1931 to characterize performance and quality of near-release wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties from breeding programs in the US Central Plains. New entries are submitted annually and can be re-entered only once. The trial is grown …

Efforts to develop live attenuated vaccines against Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map), using indirect methods to screen Map deletion mutants for potential efficacy, have not been successful. A reduction in the capacity to survive in macrophages has not predicted the ability of mutants to survive in vivo. Previous studies for screening of three deletion mutants in cattle and goats revealed one mutant, with a deletion in relA (ΔMap/relA), could not establish a persistent infection. Further studies, using antigen presenting cells (APC), blood dendritic cells and monocyte derived DC, pulsed with ΔMap/relA or a 35 kDa Map membrane protein (MMP) revealed …
