A Comparative Study Of The European Stability Mechanism With The Troubled Asset Relief Program Of The United States, Tanu Sinha

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

This article presents a comparative study of the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), established by the U.S. Treasury during the 2008 financial crisis, and the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), a permanent bail-out fund established by the European Union (EU) in 2012. The article begins by introducing the European Union and the Sovereign Debt Crisis briefly, and discusses TARP and its impact on the United States economy. Then the article summarizes the evolution of ESM along with the bail-out programs that have been provided by ESM and its predecessors. The article then outlines the similarities and differences between ESM and TARP, …

The prevalence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is increasing continuously worldwide. The incidence of T2D is highly correlated with poor diet, physical inactivity and occurrence of obesity. Recent studies reported possible interaction between T2D and gut microbiome, which revealed different composition of gut microbiome. A specific strain Akkermansia muciniphila (A. muciniphila) was reported with significantly lower abundance even prior to the …

Advisor: Professor David Crich

Major: Chemistry

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Infectious diseases causing by antibiotic resistant pathogen are one of the major threat to human health and society today. Many researchers tried to develop next generation of antibiotics by reinvesting the existing antibacterial drugs. Aminoglycosides have long been used as highly potent and broad-spectrum antibiotics for treating bacterial infections. But their side effect, especially the irreversible ototoxicity, and the fast-growing resistant problem limit their application. The goal of this research was …

Emergent Narrative: Stories Of Play, Playing With Stories, Eric Murnane Jan 2018

Emergent Narrative: Stories Of Play, Playing With Stories, Eric Murnane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Emergent narrative, a phenomenon of unexpected contextual stories arising through play, has been researched in the field of game studies since 1999. However, that discussion largely lies in the realm of theoretical stories which are generated by either the system or the player. The purpose of this dissertation is to deepen our understanding of emergent narrative by examining real-world examples of the phenomenon. Four hundred player posts were gathered from forums relating to the video game Skyrim (a large, open world fantasy roleplaying game) and analyzed using a mixed-method framework which is informed by digital ethnography, fan studies, and game …

The Will To (Share) Power: Privilege, Positionality, And The Servant-Leader, Jennifer Tilghman-Havens

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

As an administrator at a university, I find myself reflecting on the cycles of years that mark the time our students walk the sidewalks of our campus. As one considers the last four years for our traditional graduating seniors, the formational national landscape that emerges is a critical one. As first year students, they watched protests erupt in Ferguson over the shooting of high school graduate Michael Brown (Bosman & Fitzsimmons, 2014) and immigration debates across Europe due to the Syrian refugee crisis (Robins-Early, 2015). As sophomores, they learned of the intended oil pipeline across the indigenous land of the …

What We Mean When We Talk About Reading: Rethinking The Purposes And Contexts Of College Reading, Rachel Ihara, Ann Del Principe Jan 2018

What We Mean When We Talk About Reading: Rethinking The Purposes And Contexts Of College Reading, Rachel Ihara, Ann Del Principe

Publications and Research

This study illuminates faculty beliefs about reading by closely examining their attitudes toward assigned readings and faculty professional reading practice. Drawing upon interview data from instructors teaching in a range of disciplines at a two-year college, we suggest that conversations about reading would benefit from greater awareness of the various contexts and purposes for reading. Rather than talk about reading as something students either "do" or "don’t do", or do well or poorly, we draw attention to the ways that different purposes for reading shape reading behaviors for students and faculty alike.

To continue the series that began in 1994, the National Beef Quality Audit (NBQA) – 2016 was conducted to quantify the quality status of the market cow and bull beef sector, as well as determine improvements made in the beef and dairy industry since 2007. The NBQA-2016 was conducted from March through December of 2016, and assessed hide-on carcasses (n = 5,278), chilled carcasses (n = 4,285), heads (n = 5,720), and offal items (n = 4,800) in 18 commercial processing facilities throughout the United States. Beef cattle were predominantly black-hided; 68.0% of beef cows and 67.2% of beef bulls …

Illuminating The Dark Act, Samantha Ricci

UC Law Constitutional Quarterly

Labeling is a primary method of providing information about food such as the production, ingredients, and nutrition facts-but what happens when labels become less accessible? This Note explores the justice implications of the first genetically modified organism (GMO) labeling bill, The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, or known to opponents as The DARK Act (Denying Americans the Right to Know). This Act allows for a "QR" code, website, or 1-800 number to constitute a label for GMO labeling requirements. This Act discriminates against 100 million Americans who do not own smart phones or have access to Wi-Fi or data, …

What's Our Strategy To Save Farm Animals?, Lewis Bollard Jan 2018

What's Our Strategy To Save Farm Animals?, Lewis Bollard

General – Farm Animal Issues

Since the start of 2016, the Open Philanthropy Project has approved 82 farm animal welfare grants totaling $47M to 50 grantees in 24 countries. This newsletter provides some thoughts on how we think about farm animal welfare, our current strategy, and the impact some of our grants may be having. Since the bulk of the animals raised for food are in countries other than the US, Open Philanthropy has supported projects in China (13% of total grant-making), Europe (11%), India (5.5%) and the US (9%) with the bulk of the remaining funds going to projects with global impact for laying …

How Can You Do The Most Good For Animals?, Lewis Bollard Jan 2018

How Can You Do The Most Good For Animals?, Lewis Bollard

General – Farm Animal Issues

While the global human situation has improved, things have become worse for farmed animals. Factory farms confine 11 times more vertebrate animals than they did 50 years ago, about 110 billion at any time. If FAO projections come true, factory farms will confine another 90 billion animals by 2050, or 20 for every human on earth. Factory farms confine these animals to crowded cages and barren pens, cut off their beaks, tails, and genitals without pain relief, and slaughter them with little attention to their wellbeing. The fishing industry alone kills 3-8 billion animals every day, most by slow suffocation, …

Us Legislative Update: The King Amendment, Lewis Bollard Jan 2018

Us Legislative Update: The King Amendment, Lewis Bollard

General – Farm Animal Issues

Abstract

In early 2018, the US House of Representatives voted down the farm bill, which contained an amendment to preempt all meaningful state farm animal welfare laws, including Massachusetts’ 2016 ballot measure and California’s planned 2018 ballot measure. The amendment, named after its odious author Rep. Steve King (R-IA), won the support of farm state Republicans, who voted to insert it into the must-pass once-every-five-years farm bill. And although the farm bill was defeated last week — for reasons unrelated to King’s amendment — the House is likely to reconsider it by June 22. So what’s going on and what …

How Much Should We Focus On Slaughter?, Amanda Hungerford Jan 2018

How Much Should We Focus On Slaughter?, Amanda Hungerford

General – Farm Animal Issues

The following newsletter focuses on the state of slaughter. Although there are some amazing groups and individuals who focus on reducing the suffering caused by slaughter, it’s only a subset of work for most organizations, and seems neglected across the farm animal movement. Should it be more of a priority? In this newsletter, I’ll consider the importance and tractability of slaughter reforms — and the arguments against them.

The 2018 Elections And Farm Animals, Lewis Bollard Jan 2018

The 2018 Elections And Farm Animals, Lewis Bollard

General – Farm Animal Issues

Animal advocates have always emphasized passing legislation that will protect animals but it is not obvious that, in the farmed animal area, such a focus is worth all the effort. The US Congress has never passed a law protecting animals in factory farms (the last attempt, in 2010, secured just 40 cosponsors). Even the most progressive state legislatures — California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — have rejected basic farm animal welfare bills. And advocates have had more success by other means, for instance by securing corporate animal welfare policies that exceed the strongest state laws. But even if …

Invisible Stripes: The Problem Of Youth Criminal Records, Judith G. Mcmullen

Faculty Publications

It is common knowledge in American society that persons who have criminal records will have a more difficult path to obtaining legitimate employment. Similarly, conventional wisdom acknowledges the unfortunate fact that young people, on average, are more prone to engage in risky, impulsive, and other ill-advised behavior that might result in brushes with law enforcement authorities. This article addresses the difficult situation faced by people whose now disabling criminal records were attained while they were under the age of 21. Not only do such individuals face stigma and possible discrimination from potential employers, the efforts of today’s young people to …

This was certainly not an epiphany but as I accumulated the items on this list, I was impressed not only with what we have conducted …

Protective Role Of Kallistatin In Vascular Injury, Senescence And Aging, Youming Guo Jan 2018

Protective Role Of Kallistatin In Vascular Injury, Senescence And Aging, Youming Guo

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Kallistatin, a plasma protein, consists of two essential structural elements, an active site and a heparin-binding domain. Kallistatin exerts pleiotropic effects on angiogenesis, inflammation, fibrosis and tumor growth. This study aims to decipher the role and mechanism of kallistatin in vascular injury, senescence and aging. First, we determined the effect of kallistatin on endothelial-mesenchymal transition (EndMT), a process mediating vascular injury, organ fibrosis and cancer progression. Recombinant human kallistatin via its heparin-binding site blocked TGF-β-induced EndMT, associated with downregulated microRNA (miR)-21-Akt signaling and oxidative stress in human endothelial cells. Kallistatin’s active site is essential for stimulating antioxidant genes, endothelial nitric …

Aminoglycosides Rapidly Inhibit Nad(P)H Metabolism Increasing Reactive Oxygen Species And Cochlear Cell Demise, Danielle E. Desa, Michael G. Nichols, Heather Jensen Smith

Journal Articles: Eppley Institute

Despite causing permanent hearing loss by damaging inner ear sensory cells, aminoglycosides (AGs) remain one of the most widely used classes of antibiotics in the world. Although the mechanisms of cochlear sensory cell damage are not fully known, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are clearly implicated. Mitochondrial-specific ROS formation was evaluated in acutely cultured murine cochlear explants exposed to gentamicin (GM), a representative ototoxic AG antibiotic. Superoxide (O2·-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) were measured using MitoSOX Red and Dihydrorhodamine 123, respectively, in sensory and supporting cells. A 1-h GM exposure significantly increased O2·- formation in IHCs and increased H2O2 formation in …

Journal Articles: Cardiology

AIM: Since cardiovascular magnetic resonance feature-tracking (CMR-FT) has been demonstrated to be of incremental clinical merit we investigated the interchangeability of global left and right ventricular strain parameters between different CMR-FT software solutions.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: CMR-cine images of 10 patients without significant reduction in LVEF and RVEF and 10 patients with a significantly impaired systolic function were analyzed using two different types of FT-software (TomTec, Germany; QStrain, Netherlands). Global longitudinal strains (LV GLS, RV GLS), global left ventricular circumferential (GCS) and radial strains (GRS) were assessed. Differences in intra- and inter-observer variability within and between software types based on …

Women’S Dreams In Galdós’S Later Episodios Nacionales, Vernon A. Chamberlin Jan 2018

Women’S Dreams In Galdós’S Later Episodios Nacionales, Vernon A. Chamberlin

Decimonónica

Although all of the women’s dreams in Galdós’s Novelas Contemporáneas were included in Joseph Schraibman’s Dreams in the Novels of Galdós, there have been subsequent augmentations of Schraibman’s findings, focusing primarily on the well-known dream of Fortunata at the end of part III of Fortunata y Jacinta.1 In response to the lack of sustained interest concerning dreams in the Episodios, there is a new study forthcoming, “Dreaming about History: Galdós’s Oneiric Realism,” which focuses exclusively on male dreams and male daydreams /reverie in the Episodios’ fourth and fifth series.2 This choice of Galdós’s late …

Performing The Closet In Clarín’S La Regenta, Mehl Allan Penrose Jan 2018

Performing The Closet In Clarín’S La Regenta, Mehl Allan Penrose

Decimonónica

In La Regenta (1884-1885), the best-known and arguably the best work written by Leopoldo Alas or Clarín, gender expression and sexuality that diverge from societal convention pervade the novel, as many scholars have rightly pointed out.1 Indeed, the plot revolves around a love triangle between Ana, Fermín and Álvaro, all of whom are involved in sexually transgressive relations. Within this milieu fraught with heterosexual illicitness, characters who exhibit queer gender and sexual expression are silenced, made ambiguous, or revealed as one-dimensional figures by the narrator. Their queerness is for the most part not recognized or acknowledged by other characters. …
