What Community Members With Chronic Illness Teach Future Healthcare Professionals In A Longitudinal Interprofessional Education Program: A Focus Group Study, Rachel White, Maria Brucato, Amber King, Anne B. Mitchell, Nethra S. Ankam
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
INTRODUCTION: Nearly 50% of Americans have at least one chronic illness. Preparing future healthcare providers for interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) and person-centred care through community-based interprofessional education (IPE) can improve outcomes for this growing population. Partial programme theories predict that patients' participation as teachers in health professions education contributes to students' development of patient-centredness. Role theory asserts that behaviours are shaped by assigned roles; therefore, community members with chronic illness who assume roles of health mentors in an IPE curriculum are predicted to teach students about their patient experiences. Yet, this teaching outcome and the lessons health mentors teach in …
Echoes Of The Goddess: Reclaiming Power-Within In The Modern Workplace, Chloe E. Hanousek
Echoes Of The Goddess: Reclaiming Power-Within In The Modern Workplace, Chloe E. Hanousek
Student Publications
This work examines gender inequality in the American workforce as part of a broader cultural system that consistently devalues care, embodiment, and relational labor. Rather than treating issues such as the wage gap or the motherhood penalty as isolated problems, it situates them within a historical pattern shaped by patriarchal power, medical dismissal, and the domination of nature. Through an interdisciplinary feminist approach, this work traces how the suppression of the feminine influences women’s working lives, health experiences, and relationships to their bodies. By connecting labor inequality to burnout, ecological harm, and the erosion of inner authority, it argues that …
Learn To Fly: Enabling Deep Learning Based Perception And Control In Aerial Robotics, Krishna Muvva
Learn To Fly: Enabling Deep Learning Based Perception And Control In Aerial Robotics, Krishna Muvva
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly deployed in dynamic, GPS degraded, and cluttered environments, yet their autonomy remains fundamentally constrained by limitations in onboard perception and real-time control. This dissertation addresses these challenges by proposing a unified framework that co-designs deep learning-based perception and model-based control, organized around three core thrusts: Learn to Track, Learn to Localize, and Learn to Evade.
Learn to Track develops dynamic and adaptive perception control mechanisms that optimize CNN inference for target tracking. A control-aware CNN framework dynamically adjusts inference frequency based on UAV motion, reducing latency while maintaining visual lock. An adaptive CNN with …

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
This research explores the complex relationship between cosmetic industry marketing strategies, media-driven beauty standards, and the mental health of Generation Z consumers. Utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods, the study examines how frequent exposure to curated beauty ideals and persuasive advertising shapes self-esteem, confidence, and personal identity among young adults. Through surveys and in-depth interviews, the research highlights the evolving nature of cosmetic use, revealing how early engagement with beauty products often stems from social conditioning and personal insecurities. Participants describe a shift from using cosmetics as a means of concealment to embracing them for creative expression and self-care. However, …
Creating Blender Animations To Help Students Visualize Organic Chemistry Concepts, Vasilina Vikareva, Jeffrey Hansen
Creating Blender Animations To Help Students Visualize Organic Chemistry Concepts, Vasilina Vikareva, Jeffrey Hansen
Annual Student Research Poster Session
Many students struggle with organic chemistry because they find it difficult to visualize molecular structures and interactions in three dimensions. Concepts like bond rotation for conformational isomers and intermolecular forces require strong spatial imagination, which traditional 2D drawings fail to develop effectively. This spatial visualization deficit contributes significantly to high failure rates and student anxiety in organic chemistry courses, creating a substantial barrier to success in STEM fields. This project aims to solve this problem by creating animations that demonstrate complex chemical concepts in clear, visual ways that enhance student comprehension and retention. The research methodology involves developing a comprehensive …
Public Perception And Awareness Of Shark Nets In New South Wales, Drew Rosenfeld
Public Perception And Awareness Of Shark Nets In New South Wales, Drew Rosenfeld
Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology
Shark nets have been in use along the beaches of New South Wales since 1937, with the purpose of the nets to reduce human shark encounters near popular beaches. While the purpose of the nets is to protect personal safety, the nets also entangle and harm non target marine life. This study examined public perception and awareness of shark nets in NSW through a mixed method approach that utilized survey and interview data. In total, 201 surveys were administered on Bondi and Coogee beach. Five interviews were also carried out with key stakeholder groups. Results have shown that public perception …
Learning From The Roost: An Exploration Of Public Perceptions And Education Around Grey-Headed Flying Foxes At Centennial Parklands, Sydney., Gigi Pandole
Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology
Grey-headed flying foxes (Pteropus poliocephalus) have become a familiar feature of many Australian cities, and this visibility often prompts a mix of curiosity, uncertainty and concern. In Sydney, the long-term colony at Lachlan Swamp in Centennial Parklands brings thousands of visitors into close contact with the species each week. Some people respond with interest or appreciation, while others feel uneasy due to noise, smell or common misconceptions about disease. These everyday encounters raise an important question for conservation: how do people form their perceptions of flying foxes, and what role does education play in shaping coexistence in urban environments? This …
Urban Noisy Miner Populations And Vegetation Composition Hinders Small Bird Communities In Urban Sydney, Australia And Canberra, Australia, Libby Hennes
Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology
Increasing urbanization to prioritize habitats that are eucalypt dominant with poor understory density has resulted in an overabundance of the native honeyeater the Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala). Noisy Miners are incredibly aggressive, especially towards birds that are smaller than them. This is believed to have contributed to declining small bird populations in remnant woodland patches that are dominated by Noisy Miners. This same pattern was discovered in urban greenspaces across Sydney, Australia and Canberra, Australia during November 2025. Small birds were almost completely absent in sites in Sydney and small birds in Canberra had a strong negative correlation with the …

Because I Care: The Effect Of Value Congruence And Compensation Scheme On Target Setting In Social Mission Organizations, Wioleta Olczak, Tyler F. Thomas, Dimitri Yatsenko
Accounting Faculty Research and Publications
Many organizations, including for-profit firms, seek to support a social mission. This study experimentally examines how superiors' value congruence and compensation scheme affect superiors' target-setting decisions in social mission organizations. We predict and find that more value-congruent superiors set higher targets for their subordinates than less value-congruent superiors to motivate
their subordinates to advance the organization's social mission. We also find that superiors set higher targets for their subordinates when compensated with performance-based pay rather than a fixed wage. We highlight the importance of superiors' value congruence with the organization's social initiatives and compensation scheme on their target-setting decisions. Organizations …

Effects Of Provisioning On Two Species Of Rock-Wallaby (Petrogale Mareeba And Petrogale Assimilis) In North Queensland, Australia, Eve Oliker
Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology
Provisioning, the act of providing food, water, or shelter to wild animals, can lead to habituation, resulting in changes in behavior, abundance, and distribution (Newsome & Rodger, 2008). In North Queensland, a colony of Mareeba rock-wallaby (Petrogale mareeba) at Granite Gorge has been provisioned for over 45 years, mainly through direct hand-feeding, while a group of allied rock-wallaby (Petrogale assimilis) in Magnetic Island has experienced shorter and less consistent provisioning. This study investigated whether long-term provisioning causes more severe behavioral changes, higher aggression, and larger aggregation sizes. Approximately one week was spent observing each population. Scan sampling was utilized to …

Twenty-three sites were sampled for platypus presence over 21 days for a total of 784 surveys at various times between 6:00 and 20:00 during which current weather and river conditions were recorded. Fifty-eight platypuses were observed, and their behaviors were recorded in 15-minute periods for a total 5.86 hours of behavioral data. During observations the type and duration of their behaviors was recorded. The habitat assessment at the sites included factors that may impact platypus occurrence, behavior, or abundance such as …
Contradicting Effects Of Three Firefighting Chemicals On Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis Infection, Naomi Meyers
Contradicting Effects Of Three Firefighting Chemicals On Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis Infection, Naomi Meyers
Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology
The spread of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis around the world has led to the decline of many species; however, Australian amphibian populations are especially vulnerable to the effects of the fungus. The combination of endemism, small geographical ranges, and a climate that supports fungal growth has led to the presumed extinction of 6 endemic species since the disease was first discovered. In addition to this fungus, amphibians are also facing pressure from the increasing prevalence of wildfires. As wildfires become more common and more destructive, scientists are rushing to find chemicals that aid firefighters in slowing down and reducing the intensity of …

Piping Up: Exploring Body Length And Density Metrics Of Dominant Pipefish Species Urocampus Carinirostris Across Spatially Distinct Sites In Moreton Bay, Qld, Leah Esser
Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology
The morphologically unique family Syngnathidae faces high levels of anthropogenic pressures in Moreton Bay Marine Park where seagrass beds, habitat to many syngnathid species, are increasingly vulnerable. Among these species, the pipefish Urocampus carinirostris is especially prevalent, making it a strong candidate as an indicator and model species. Threats to seagrass, including pollution and nutrient overload, largely stem from sources on the bay’s western banks. This study aimed to conduct a preliminary investigation of how U. carinirostris size, density, and site-level pipefish diversity compares across locations, with particular attention to differences between eastern and western sites. An exploratory comparison between …

Climate change and its broadening scope have made awareness of environmental issues, as well as ways to mitigate them, essential to securing our planet's future. Artistic venues, such as art galleries and even theatres, are becoming increasingly prominent in this conversation due to their ability to engage broad audiences and make scientific concepts more accessible. To understand the effectiveness of artistic efforts in science communication, it is necessary to assess the strategies by which both successful scientific venues, like zoos or natural history museums, and emerging artistic venues in science disseminate information. This project aimed to assess science communication strategies …
Blooming Questions: The Potential Impact Of The Ongoing Harmful Algal Bloom On Pinnipeds On Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Rose Cassidy
Blooming Questions: The Potential Impact Of The Ongoing Harmful Algal Bloom On Pinnipeds On Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Rose Cassidy
Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Cultural Ecology
The ongoing harmful algal bloom in South Australia that began in March 2025, which resulted in over 106 marine animal mortalities across 550 taxa, was recently identified as having brevetoxins, which can harm marine mammals and human beings (Murray et al., 2025). This algal bloom is currently affecting Kangaroo Island, South Australia, a key habitat for the endemic Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea), as well as long-nosed fur seals (Arctocephalus forsteri) (Goldsworthy et al., 2021), (Goldsworthy and Shaughnessy, 1994). Because these pinniped species were observed eating algal bloom affected prey, previous research on other pinnipeds suggests that the subject pinnipeds …

The Endorsement Test’S Early Years, 1983–1985: Notes From The O’Connor Files, Jay Wexler
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
One of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s signature contributions to U.S. constitutional law was the endorsement test, a subtle but critically important reformulation of the Court’s then prevailing approach to applying the Establishment Clause that focused on the message sent by government action supporting religion and the potentially harmful effects of that message on religious minorities and the political community. Now that the current Court has discarded the endorsement test, leaving the government freer than ever to support religion in a variety of ways, we should expect to see the harms that Justice O’Connor cared about become increasingly widespread and prevalent. …
Justice In Colorado: Achieving Animal Plaintiffhood Through The State's Common Law, Mason Liddell
Justice In Colorado: Achieving Animal Plaintiffhood Through The State's Common Law, Mason Liddell
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
The common law of Colorado embraces all of the premises necessary to conclude that non-human animals are legal persons who may bring suits on their own behalf. All that is necessary is for a case to bring those premises together. The state endorses a Hohfeldian understanding of rights and duties, meaning the two concepts are necessarily corollaries. So, humans’ existing statutory duty to avoid being cruel to animals entails that those same animals have a right to be free from cruelty under state statute. Then, premised on a long line of legal philosophy and the state’s understanding of “legal personhood,” …

Cocaine use disorder (CUD) lacks FDA-approved treatments, partly due to the difficulty of creating therapeutics that target behaviour-related neural circuits without disrupting signalling throughout the brain. One promising candidate for circuit-selective neuromodulation is pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP), a neuropeptide with pleiotropic behavioural actions whose signalling network spans the gut–brain axis. Here, we investigated the potential existence and function of an endogenous PACAP signalling network within the nucleus accumbens core (NAcc), which is a structure that integrates emotional, cognitive and reward processes underlying behaviour. We found that PACAP and its cognate receptor, PAC1R, are endogenously expressed in the rat NAcc …
Extreme Prison Sentences: Legal And Normative Consequences, Melissa Hamilton
Extreme Prison Sentences: Legal And Normative Consequences, Melissa Hamilton
Cardozo Law Review
The article examines the phenomenon of extreme sentences—defined as those exceeding 200 years—in the federal criminal justice system, raising critical questions about their rationale, proportionality, and alignment with traditional theories of punishment. Through an empirical study of 55 such cases, the analysis highlights the role of mandatory minimums, cognitive biases, and an exclusionist mindset in driving these sentences. It critiques the normalization of extreme penalties and their implications for mass incarceration, deterrence, and human dignity.
