A Review Of Epstein Barr Virus Immunity, Pathogenesis And Immunotherapies, Heather Stuart
A Review Of Epstein Barr Virus Immunity, Pathogenesis And Immunotherapies, Heather Stuart
Senior Honors Projects
Epstein – Barr Virus (EBV), a member of the Herpesviridae family, is commonly known as the cause of infectious mononucleosis. While EBV infection has acute effects, its primary significance in human health stems from its association with multiple cancers resulting from chronic infection. EBV first establishes infection in epithelial cells of the oropharynx, where it is lytic, and later establishes latent infection in B cells, where it exists in latency for remainder of the host’s lifetime. Dendritic cells and natural killer cells are first to control expansion of the infection followed by cytotoxic T cells and helper T cells. Through …

Performance Evaluation Of Mission Critical Communications Services Over Lte Networks, Kehinde Olumide Olasupo
Theses and Dissertations
he existing Private/Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) technologies designed specifically for Mission Critical Communication (MCC) systems are narrowband and wideband devices, with limited network data capacity in emergency scenarios. They are majorly used to support MCC voice communications and low data rate applications during mission critical operations. However, the need for broadband systems that would support high radio data capacity keep increasing during major incidents and accident scenarios. Because of this, the MCC agencies were attracted by the broadband capabilities of Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. But, the uplink capacity of LTE- based MCC systems is still a concern. In planning …

The English Legacy Of The Second Amendment - History And Myth, Allen R. Kamp
The English Legacy Of The Second Amendment - History And Myth, Allen R. Kamp
Hofstra Law Review
According to the majority opinion of Justice Scalia in District of Columbia v. Heller, pre-Second Amendment adoption English history informs the Amendment’s meaning. The majority opinion discusses the historical background after analyzing the language of the Amendment: “Putting all of these textual elements together, we find that they guarantee the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation. This meaning is strongly confirmed by the historical background of the Second Amendment. We look to this because it has always been widely understood that the Second Amendment, like the First and Fourth Amendments, codified a pre-existing right.”

Alcohol-use disorder (AUD) is the most prevalent substance-use disorder worldwide. There is substantial individual variability in alcohol drinking behaviors in the population, the neural circuit mechanisms of which remain elusive. Utilizing in vivo electrophysiological techniques, we find that low alcohol drinking (LAD) mice have dramatically higher ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine neuron firing and burst activity. Unexpectedly, VTA dopamine neuron activity in high alcohol drinking (HAD) mice does not differ from alcohol naive mice. Optogenetically enhancing VTA dopamine neuron burst activity in HAD mice decreases alcohol drinking behaviors. Circuit-specific recordings reveal that spontaneous activity of nucleus accumbens-projecting VTA (VTA-NAc) neurons …

Diabetes increases the risk of Cardio-vascular disease (CVD). CVD is more prevalent in type 2 diabetes (T2D) than type 1 diabetes (T1D), but the mortality risk is higher in T1D than in T2D. The pathophysiology of CVD in T1D is poorly defined. To learn more about biological pathways that are potentially involved in T1D with cardiac dysfunction, we sought to identify differentially expressed genes in the T1D heart. Our study used T1D mice with severe hyperglycemia along with significant deficits in echocardiographic measurements. Microarray analysis of heart tissue RNA revealed that the T1D mice differentially expressed 10 genes compared to …

The Mirage Of Use Restrictions, Ric Simmons
The Mirage Of Use Restrictions, Ric Simmons
North Carolina Law Review
This Article concludes that most types of use restrictions do not have sufficient legal justifications. It first reviews the many possible applications of use restrictions and discusses five potential doctrinal bases to justify them: (1) apply an “ongoing seizure” doctrine; (2) create a purpose test for the exclusionary rule; (3) re-define a “search” as including the processing of information, not just its collection; (4) make the purpose of the data collection a factor in determining whether collecting the data is a search; and (5) limit which government agencies are allowed access to the data that is collected. This Article then …
Development Of Pre-Stressed Retrofit Strategies For Mitigating Fatigue Cracking In Steel Waterway Lock Gate Components, Christine Michelle Lozano
Development Of Pre-Stressed Retrofit Strategies For Mitigating Fatigue Cracking In Steel Waterway Lock Gate Components, Christine Michelle Lozano
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Lock gates are an important part of the transportation infrastructure within the United States (US), having many economic, safety, and environmental benefits over rail and highway transportation systems. Unfortunately, many existing lock gates throughout the US have reached or exceeded their initial design life and require frequent repairs to remain in service. Unscheduled repairs often increase as gates age, having a local economic impact on freight transport which can create economic ripples throughout the nation. Fatigue and corrosion are key causes of unscheduled service interruptions, degrading lock gate components over time. Additionally, because lock gates are submerged during operation, crack …

Welfare And Federalism's Peril, Andrew Hammond
Welfare And Federalism's Peril, Andrew Hammond
Washington Law Review
Recent scholarship on American federalism lacks case studies to inform that scholarship’s trans-substantive insights and claims. This Article examines the last two decades of devolution brought about by the 1996 Welfare Reform Act (PRWORA). It details the history of PRWORA and how the funding mechanism built into Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)—the TANF block grant—guaranteed the program’s deterioration. The Article documents the program’s failure to respond to increased need among poor families after Hurricane Katrina and in the Great Recession, showing how the federal government’s use of TANF in both crises teach us the limits of fiscally devolved programs. …

The New Sister-State Sovereign Immunity, Michael H. Hoffheimer
The New Sister-State Sovereign Immunity, Michael H. Hoffheimer
Washington Law Review
The Article reviews the constitutional status of sister-state sovereign immunity. It argues that the parity requirement announced in Franchise Tax Board v. Hyatt (2016) is a temporary compromise that is supported by neither the purposes of the Full Faith and Credit Clause nor by cases cited by the Court. It further argues that parity is bad policy because parity overprotects states for acts they commit beyond their borders and under protects the interests of forum states in regulating conduct within their territorial jurisdiction. But the Article breaks from most scholarship. It suggests that the Court went too far in Nevada …
Safeguarding Washington's Trade Secrets: Protecting Businesses From Public Records Requests, John Delaney
Safeguarding Washington's Trade Secrets: Protecting Businesses From Public Records Requests, John Delaney
Washington Law Review
Lawmakers constantly balance competing interests. They decide where to draw lines so that societal goals are accomplished without ignoring the needs of those who will be affected by their choices. The Washington State Legislature is now in the process of addressing the line between government transparency and the protection of private companies’ trade secrets. Companies who provide technology to the federal government are susceptible to losing their trade secrets through a public records request. The Washington State Legislature is currently reviewing the trade secret exception to the Public Records Act to ensure it is continuing to protect companies from losing …
The Helicopter State: Misuse Of Parens Patriae Unconstitutionally Precludes Individual And Class Claims, Gabrielle J. Hanna
The Helicopter State: Misuse Of Parens Patriae Unconstitutionally Precludes Individual And Class Claims, Gabrielle J. Hanna
Washington Law Review
The doctrine of parens patriae allows state attorneys general to represent state citizens in aggregate litigation suits that are, in many ways, similar to class actions and mass-tort actions. Its origins, however, reflect a more modest scope. Parens patriae began as a doctrine allowing the British king to protect those without the ability to protect themselves, including wards and mentally disabled individuals. The rapid expansion of parens patriae standing in the United States may be partly to blame for the relative absence of limiting requirements or even well-developed case law governing parens patriae suits. On the one hand, class actions …
Reinvigorating Urban Under Space:Towards A New Type Of Public Landscape, Yujia Wang, Gandong Cai
Reinvigorating Urban Under Space:Towards A New Type Of Public Landscape, Yujia Wang, Gandong Cai
NAKHARA (Journal of Environmental Design and Planning)
The proposition of this paper is to examine the agency of landscape in subverting, energizing and reinvigorating a specific kind of deserted space in cities - Urban Under Space. The term Urban UnderSpace refers to residual infrastructural spaces, such as under-bridge space, abandoned subway stations, air raid shelters, etc. The wide availability and continued generation of Urban Under Space in cities that were investigated in North America and Asia reflect a problem in modern planning. But it also provides an opportunity of positioning these piecesas a network of new urban landscapes that can offer a unique and attractive public space …
A Design Methodology For Continuous Fiber Additive Manufacturing Using Advanced Computer Aided Engineering Techniques, Nicholas Venter
A Design Methodology For Continuous Fiber Additive Manufacturing Using Advanced Computer Aided Engineering Techniques, Nicholas Venter
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
A design methodology for Continuous Carbon Fiber Additive Manufacturing (CCFAM) developed using Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) techniques takes advantage of both the mechanical strength of composite materials and the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) method. By performing topology optimization and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) on a load-bearing part, engineers can design much lighter optimized parts that are just as strong as those produced using FFF. This weight reduction is achieved by relying on the mechanical strength of continuous carbon fibers printed alongside a traditional thermoplastic matrix. The FFF additive manufacturing method enables the production of complex shapes, which can match the …
Effect Of Underfill Material & Gap Height On Reliability Of Low-K Large-Die Flip Chip Package Under Thermal Loading, Paul Crisanth
Effect Of Underfill Material & Gap Height On Reliability Of Low-K Large-Die Flip Chip Package Under Thermal Loading, Paul Crisanth
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
The reliability assessment of package assembly is important to predict the performance of any microelectronic devices. Formation of fatigue cracks at the interface between the solder joint and component is the common failure occurring in widely used microelectronic devices. Lead-free solders and advanced silicon process nodes with the low-k dielectrics flip chip package are used and are facing significant reliability challenges. The mismatch of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the chip and substrate affect solder joint reliability. The underfill encapsulant packaging is widely used to improve chip device reliability. In this paper, we are studying the effect of different …
