The Value Of Choice: An Exploratory Case Study On The Intrinsic Motivation Of Dance Students Within The Creative Process, Jenna M. Gonsalves Dec 2017

The Value Of Choice: An Exploratory Case Study On The Intrinsic Motivation Of Dance Students Within The Creative Process, Jenna M. Gonsalves

Master's Theses

This exploratory case study was designed to analyze the impact choice making has on the intrinsic motivation of middle school dance students including self determination theory’s basic needs of competence, relatedness, and autonomy. Data were collected using multiple sources including observation rubrics and semi-structured pre- and post- group interviews. Two groups of students ages 11-14 created dances for performance. One group participated in a collaborative approach to the creative process and had the opportunity to make choices. The other group participated in a teacher-led creative process and did not have the opportunity to make choices. A thematic content analysis of …

Building The More Confident Student Choreographer Through Writing: The Use Of Prompts To Guide The Choreographic Process, Yvette Bennett

Master's Theses

The purpose of this research was to implement specific writing prompts into a high-school curriculum that aids in the choreographic process in an effort to bring about confident student choreographers. This research evaluated the choreographic process using a series of writing prompts to support participants with the goal of producing successful student choreographed dance works throughout a semester long high school dance course. The researcher posed the following three essential questions: How does the writing prompt aid in the choreographic process? What did the participants learn about the choreographic process by using writing prompts? Do the participants feel a sense …

Let's Dance! Designing And Assessing Dance-Integrated Lessons In The Fifth Grade Language Arts Class, Emily Lorraine Hoch

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to design movement and dance-integrated lessons that would complement a poetry unit in a fifth grade language arts class at a public charter school. This quantitative and qualitative study sought to discover how the use of creative movement and dance could improve students’ ability to communicate through writing, and revise their work, as well as assess how this approach to teaching would effect their ability to think critically. These integrated lessons aligned with Colorado State Core Standards and 21st Century skills, as dance integration promotes the use of creativity, critical thinking, communication and collaboration …

Dance For Special Needs Students: Building Confidence And Motor Skills, Jennifer Monique Dabalsa Dec 2017

Dance For Special Needs Students: Building Confidence And Motor Skills, Jennifer Monique Dabalsa

Master's Theses

Participating in a dance class is influential in the development of young people’s creative, imaginative, individual, and communicative skills. The use of dance within a classroom increases physical fitness, enriches motor skills, coordination, and enhances social skills. Dance also increases muscular endurance, builds balance, as well as encourages teamwork and group skills. Most, if not all individuals crave to be socially accepted on some level. Many individuals with special needs are limited in verbal communication, or they are completely non-verbal. Connecting to individuals with these types of limitations proves to be challenging in comparison with a typical abled bodied individual. …

Creating A Clinical Practice Guideline For Women Who Have Had A First Trimester Miscarriage: A Psychological Aspect Of Care, Natalie Marie Sheehan Dec 2017

Creating A Clinical Practice Guideline For Women Who Have Had A First Trimester Miscarriage: A Psychological Aspect Of Care, Natalie Marie Sheehan

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

One in four women will experience a miscarriage in the United States alone (Geller, Psaros, & Kornfield, 2010). Miscarriages can cause an increased distress to the women experiencing the loss and her partner (Nikčević, Kuczmierczyk, Tunkel & Nicolaides, 2000). This type of loss is not usually talked about, leaving women in great distress and suffering alone. Currently, no clinical practice guideline exists dealing with the psychological aspects of a miscarriage and how to properly care for this population. The PICOT question that guided this capstone was: (P) In women, who have had a first trimester miscarriage, (I) does an established …

Evaluation Of A New Surgical Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Core Team In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Megan Rose Stephany Dec 2017

Evaluation Of A New Surgical Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Core Team In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Megan Rose Stephany

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

The healthcare workforce is moving from a traditional physician-only model to a multi-level medical provider model. Neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) have come to rely on neonatal nurse practitioners due to the decrease in resident physician hours and the lower cost of hiring a neonatal nurse practitioner. Studies have found advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) can provide benefits in the areas of communication, patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, and cost. An increasing number of critically ill infants are requiring specialized pre- and postoperative care in one Level IV NICU, which has led to continuous quality improvement in communication and continuity of …

Screening For Diabetes In At-Risk Populations In Primary Care: A Practice Guide, Vera Louise Pillitteri

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Diabetes mellitus (DM), a disease with far-reaching cardiovascular and physiological consequences, continues to grow at epidemic proportions despite efforts by the medical community to manage the disease, placing an enormous financial burden on the healthcare system. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released a report in 2014 reporting 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes including 8.1 million undiagnosed cases. Colorado is one of eight states with the most significant increases in DM diagnoses, nearly doubling between 2003 and 2014. An estimated 300,000 adults have diabetes in Colorado and an estimated 110,000 more are undiagnosed (Colorado Department …

A Guideline To Screen For Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, Jolene Nawrocki Dec 2017

A Guideline To Screen For Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy, Jolene Nawrocki

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

Diabetes mellitus is one of the fastest growing diseases in the United States and worldwide. “The number of Americans with diagnosed diabetes is projected to increase 165%, from 11 million in 2000 (prevalence of 4.0%) to 29 million in 2050 (prevalence of 7.2%)” (Boyle et al., 2001). Diabetes mellitus is known to cause numerous complications--one of the most devastating and life altering being lower extremity amputation. Approximately 185,000 non-traumatic amputations occur in the United States each year (Amputee Coalition, 2017). The burden of diabetic complications including amputations is estimated to cost the United States upwards of $245 billion per year …

Atherosclerosis In Hiv Positive Patients: A Clinical Practice Guideline For Cardiovascular Risk Assessment And Treatment, Margaret Heath Dec 2017

Atherosclerosis In Hiv Positive Patients: A Clinical Practice Guideline For Cardiovascular Risk Assessment And Treatment, Margaret Heath

Doctoral Scholarly Projects & Capstones

As modern medicine allows for an increase in lifespan, patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) face the same chronic health issues as other aging adults. Among the top killers of older adult HIV patients is atherosclerosis. The following review of literature will support the belief that HIV patients are at a higher risk for atherosclerosis due to their chronic inflammatory state. This state in which the immune response is elevated for a prolonged period of time provides an optimal environment for the development of atherosclerotic plaques, as the research evidence will demonstrate. The following guideline has been designed to assist …
