Towards High Performance Two Dimensional Transistors: Doping, Contacts, And Gate Dielectric, Lingming Yang
Towards High Performance Two Dimensional Transistors: Doping, Contacts, And Gate Dielectric, Lingming Yang
Open Access Dissertations
Recently two dimensional (2D) materials have trigged intensive research interest duo to their unique electrical, optical, mechanical properties. Semiconducting 2D crystal, such as transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) and black phosphorous (BP) are considered as promising candidates for ultra-scaled transistors due to their variable bandgaps and mobilities as well as their immunity to short-channel-effect (SCE). This thesis focuses on the a few challenges of achieving high performance 2D semiconductor field-effect-transistors (FETs), such as doping technique, contact resistance, and gate dielectric. In the first part of the thesis, a chloride doping technique is proposed to produce n type doping in TMDs such …
Cloning And Characterization Of The Maize Lesion Mimic Mutant Les23 And Its Suppressor Slml, Ross Zhan
Cloning And Characterization Of The Maize Lesion Mimic Mutant Les23 And Its Suppressor Slml, Ross Zhan
Open Access Dissertations
Plants are under constant threat from various pathogens and have evolved a two-branched immune system to defend themselves. One aspect of plant defense involves the hypersensitive response (HR) which is characterized by localized cell death to prevent the spread of the pathogen. Lesion mimic mutants are a ubiquitous class of plant mutants that spontaneously develop lesions resembling HR. However, not all lesion mimic mutants have been found to encode genes involved in defense. les23 is a recessive lesion mimic mutant in maize that can be suppressed by the Mo20W allele of Slm1 (Suppressor of lesion mimics 1). Both QTLs have …

Optimization, Control And Operation Strategies For Distributed Energy Systems, Jie Xue
Open Access Dissertations
In this dissertation, the problem of optimal operation strategies and control for gas turbine based distributed energy systems (DES) is addressed using mathematical optimization methods and computational intelligence techniques. Detailed mathematical component models for the key components of the DES such as gas turbine power generator, heat exchanger, absorption chiller, photovoltaic and wind turbine, are developed to capture the important behavior of these components and their interactions with the overall DES. These models are used to develop integrated DES models for the purpose of optimization and control design. A multi-objective function considering the total system efficiency and operational cost is …
Defining Replication-Coupled Chromatin Assembly Pathways And Their Effect On Silencing And Responses To Dna Damage In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Tiffany J. Young
Defining Replication-Coupled Chromatin Assembly Pathways And Their Effect On Silencing And Responses To Dna Damage In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Tiffany J. Young
Open Access Dissertations
The genetic information of a cell is organized in a DNA and protein structure referred to as chromatin. Chromatin consists of repeating units called nucleosomes, which consists of 147 base pairs of DNA wrapped around an octamer of histone proteins. These histone proteins are post-translationally modified at specific residues that are important gene regulation and genomic stability. Altered histone modification patterns are strongly associated with multiple cancers, underlying the importance of better understanding the pathways that regulate these modifications. During DNA replication, chromatin must be disassembled, and then reassembled behind the replication fork. Defects in this process can cause alterations …
Towards Name Disambiguation: Relational, Streaming, And Privacy-Preserving Text Data, Baichuan Zhang
Towards Name Disambiguation: Relational, Streaming, And Privacy-Preserving Text Data, Baichuan Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
In the real world, our DNA is unique but many people share names. This phenomenon often causes erroneous aggregation of documents of multiple persons who are namesakes of one another. Such mistakes deteriorate the performance of document retrieval, web search, and more seriously, cause improper attribution of credit or blame in digital forensics. To resolve this issue, the name disambiguation task 1 is designed to partition the documents associated with a name reference such that each partition contains documents pertaining to a unique real-life person. Existing algorithms for this task mainly suffer from the following drawbacks. First, the majority of …
Damage, Tension/Compression Asymmetry And Inferred Crack Growth In Fatigue Title Of Aluminum Alloys, Colin Young
Damage, Tension/Compression Asymmetry And Inferred Crack Growth In Fatigue Title Of Aluminum Alloys, Colin Young
Open Access Dissertations
The idea of a quantity D, which tracks the damage state of a material from 0 (virgin) to 1 (failed) is a well-established concept. In fatigue tests, where a given load cycle is repeated until failure, it is common to define damage D per cycle as the fraction of total life consumed per cycle, or 1/Nf. We begin by using Maximum Entropy method to develop a curve to model the life vs. load cycle relationship for a wrought aluminum alloy 2024-T351 in the low cycle fatigue range. The approach is novel in that the loading is described in terms in …
Augmented Matrix Solvers For Dynamic Linear Systems Of Equations, Yu Hong Yeung
Augmented Matrix Solvers For Dynamic Linear Systems Of Equations, Yu Hong Yeung
Open Access Dissertations
In this dissertation, the problem of updating in real time the solution to a linear system of equations when a sequence of small changes is made to the data is considered. This problem arises in many computational science and engineering applications, and we consider two of them. The first is surgical simulations, where a simulator used to train surgeons needs to provide haptic feedback by updating the system ten to hundred times per second. The second is contingency analysis in the power grids, when their operators need to simulate a large number of scenarios to predict what could happen when …
Using Multiple Ways To Investigate Cognitive Load Theory In The Context Of Physics Instruction, Tianlong Zu
Using Multiple Ways To Investigate Cognitive Load Theory In The Context Of Physics Instruction, Tianlong Zu
Open Access Dissertations
Cognitive load theory (CLT) (Sweller 1988, 1998, 2010) provides us a guiding framework for designing instructional materials. CLT differentiates three subtypes of cognitive load: intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load. The three cognitive loads are theorized based on the number of simultaneously processed elements in working memory. Intrinsic cognitive load depends upon the number of interacting elements in the instructional material that are related to the learning objective. Extraneous cognitive load is the mental resources allocated to processing unnecessary information which does not contribute to learning as caused by non-optimal instructional procedure. It is determined by the number of interacting …
Scalable Bayesian Nonparametrics And Sparse Learning For Hidden Relationship Discovery, Shandian Zhe
Scalable Bayesian Nonparametrics And Sparse Learning For Hidden Relationship Discovery, Shandian Zhe
Open Access Dissertations
Real-world data often encompass hidden relationships, such as interactions between modes in multidimensional arrays (or tensors), subsets of features correlated to specifc responses, and associations between heterogeneous data sources. Uncovering these relationships is a key problem in machine learning and data mining, and relates to numerous applications ranging from information security to imaging genetics and to computational advertisement. However, to mine these relationships, we have to face several signifcant challenges. First, how can we design powerful models to capture the complicated, potentially highly nonlinear patterns in data? Second, how can we develop effcient model estimation algorithms to deal with real-world …
Designing Hand-Driven Input With Novel Sensing Techniques For Natural Interactions In Tangible And Soft Interfaces, Sang Ho Yoon
Designing Hand-Driven Input With Novel Sensing Techniques For Natural Interactions In Tangible And Soft Interfaces, Sang Ho Yoon
Open Access Dissertations
The advancements in electrical components and computing power have introduced new types of sensing capabilities and interfaces. To support upcoming interfaces like augmented/virtual reality (AR/VR), previous studies suggested on utilizing natural correspondences like human motions and natural behaviors [1]. However, conventional input methods still rely on utilizing built-in motion and touch sensors. Although these approaches are offered in effective and efficient manner, they do not fully accommodate human’s natural motions and behaviors as a meaningful input metaphor. Introducing new sensing techniques that are capable of understanding human motions and behaviors will become essential in supporting emerging interfaces. Recent works have …
The Regulation Of Calcium Oscillations In Porcine Eggs At Fertilization, Lu Zhang
The Regulation Of Calcium Oscillations In Porcine Eggs At Fertilization, Lu Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
As the most abundant mineral in organisms, ionized calcium (Ca2+) plays a crucial role in cellular signaling, regulating a great number of physiological activities. In this study, the Ca2+ entry mechanism that sustains the long-lasting Ca2+ oscillations in fertilized pig eggs was investigated. Porcine eggs matured in vitro were used for the experiments. In some eggs, the intracellular Ca2+ stores were depleted using cyclopiazonic acid (CPA, a SERCA pump blocker), others were inseminated with boar spermatozoa. To identify the mechanism that mediates the Ca2+ influx, various inhibitors of store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) were used. We found that the inhibitors blocked …

Formative Research On An Instructional Design Theory For Fostering Self-Efficacy Through Gamification, Stacey Zurek
Open Access Dissertations
The merits of gamification as a learner-centered pedagogy that positively influences learner engagement and motivation are widely established in the literature; yet, few studies have ventured beyond motivation to consider the impact gamification has on self-efficacy. Moreover, guidance for the effective design and development of gamified instruction is lacking. This study describes formative research conducted on the Gamification for Enhancing Learner Self-Efficacy (GELSE) instructional design theory, which was developed to guide the design of gamification aimed at fostering self-efficacy. The goal of formative research is to identify improvements for an instructional design theory based on a designed instance of the …

Revisiting The Rationality Assumption Of Disclosure Laws: An Empirical Analysis, Uri Benoliel, Jenny Buchan, Tony Gutentag
Revisiting The Rationality Assumption Of Disclosure Laws: An Empirical Analysis, Uri Benoliel, Jenny Buchan, Tony Gutentag
Hofstra Law Review
Disclosure laws are based on one central assumption: that disclosees are, by their very nature, rational actors. This article questions the validity of this theoretical assumption. The article empirically shows that franchisees, who are considered sophisticated disclosees, are unrealistically optimistic about disclosed risks. In this empirical study, franchisees (N = 205) completed an online research questionnaire, in which they compared their own chances of experiencing disclosed risks with the chances of their colleagues. It was found that franchisees were optimistically biased. Franchisees believed that the chances that their franchisor might opportunistically terminate their franchise are significantly lower than that of …

Sparta Training Area Asian Carp Removal Report, Neil Rude, David Coulter, Alison Coulter, Gregory Whitledge
Reports
Aquatic invasive species have long been associated with negative ecological and socioeconomic impacts on freshwater ecosystems. In order to mitigate these potential negative effects of invasive species introductions, management and control techniques must be developed. Asian carp species (Silver Carp, Bighead Carp, Grass Carp, and Common Carp) are a problematic group of invasive species that can cause negative effects on native fish species and freshwater ecosystems through a series of trophic cascades. The current focus of Asian carp management and control techniques is directed at reducing population sizes in the upper Illinois River to reduce probability of invasion further upstream …
Creating Accountability With Interstate Cooperation: Unauthorized Water Use Enforcement On The Klamath River, Luke Fowler, Isaac Castellano
Creating Accountability With Interstate Cooperation: Unauthorized Water Use Enforcement On The Klamath River, Luke Fowler, Isaac Castellano
Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations
While lacking coercive power to compel enforcement, interstate compacts create accountability through multiple sources and layers connecting enforcement behavior to oversight. Using logistic regression, we test a model of accountability and enforcement of unauthorized water usage on the Klamath River. Findings indicate unauthorized water usage is far more likely to be reported and enforced on the Klamath River than on neighboring rivers in the same counties. Conclusions indicate the increased institutional layers of interstate compacts lead to more accountability and stringent enforcement and reporting of unauthorized water use.

Cryptochromes are evolutionarily conserved blue light receptors with many roles throughout plant growth and development. They undergo conformational changes in response to light enabling interaction with multiple downstream signaling partners. Recently, it has been shown that cryptochromes also synthesize reactive oxygen species (ROS) in response to light, suggesting the possibility of an alternate signaling mechanism. Here we show by fluorescence imaging and microscopy that H202 and ROS accumulate in the plant nucleus after cryptochrome activation. They induce ROS-regulated transcripts including for genes implicated in pathogen defense, biotic and abiotic stress. Mutant cryptochrome alleles that are non-functional in photomorphogenesis retain the …

Development Of Evidence-Based Rapid Response Team Protocols For Treatment Of Deteriorating Adult Medical-Surgical Patients, Laura Pitts Darby
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
Acute care hospitals in the United States and across the world are experiencing substantial increases in acutely ill patient populations requiring multifaceted medical treatments and care. This increase in number of seriously ill patients is resulting in crowded critical care units and more acutely ill patients on general medical-surgical units. Several decades ago, Rapid Response Systems were introduced to help reduce the risk of adverse outcomes in patients presenting signs and symptoms of clinical deterioration on medical-surgical units. In patients displaying symptoms of rapid clinical deterioration, members of the Rapid Response Team are often required to begin immediate intervention and …
