Existential Captivation: On The (Im)Possibility Of A Life Lived In Terror, Jessica Ryan Sims
Existential Captivation: On The (Im)Possibility Of A Life Lived In Terror, Jessica Ryan Sims
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation explores key concepts in the thought of Aristotle, Martin Heidegger, and Carl Schmitt in order to explain why some victims of violent assault cling to their assailants rather than flee from them. Many psychologists use the term Stockholm Syndrome to explain this surprising phenomenon. They argue that physical assault ultimately causes the victim to revert an infantile, dependent state that in turn makes her cling to whomever is in her immediate vicinity. However, I make the case that this approach fails to recognize the phenomenological root of the problem. What many scientific researchers overlook is the fact that …
Ionic Dynamics In Molecular Strong Field Ionization, Arthur Zhao
Ionic Dynamics In Molecular Strong Field Ionization, Arthur Zhao
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis studies the dynamics in strong field ionization (SFI) of small molecules, with a focus on the removal of electrons from multiple molecular orbitals, especially the mechanisms underlying the population of excited ionic states. To do this, we ionize molecular systems with ultrafast intense laser pulses ( ~10 fs, > 10 TW/cm2) and measure photoelectrons and photoions in coincidence with velocity map imaging (VMI) detection. The ionization is multiphoton by design, and due to its highly non-linear nature, intense laser pulses provide adequate temporal resolutions for probing molecular dynamics and certain electronic dynamics. VMI measures the momentum distribution of charged …

Search For The Standard Model Higgs Boson Produced With An Associated W Boson And Decaying To A Pair Of $B$ Quarks At $\Sqrt{S} = 13$ Tev With The Atlas Detector, Alyssa Rae Montalbano
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
A Higgs boson has been found in multiple decay modes, but not yet in the mode with the largest standard model (SM) branching fraction: $h\rightarrow b\bar{b}$. This thesis details a search for the SM Higgs when produced with an associated $W$ boson. This search is performed with the ATLAS detector using data from Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider operating at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 $fb^{-1}$. The final state of the $W$ boson is its leptonic decay with an electron or muon. The measured signal strength relative to the …
Effect Of Treadmill Training On Recovery Of Lower Urinary Tract And Locomotor Function Following Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury In Adult Rats, Faiza Qureshi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Inability to walk and void efficiently after spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with secondary health problems that affect quality of life. Individuals with paraplegia rate return of bladder function as one of their top priorities. Recently, studies have begun to investigate the recovery of bladder function after SCI. Additionally, several studies have shown improvements in locomotor function after SCI in human and animal models, however there is a gap of studying the correlation of temporal pattern of recovery of bladder and locomotor function after SCI. The aim of this research was to study the correlation of the temporal pattern …
Relative Strength Among Class-Based Actors And Cross-National Differences Of Income Inequality, 2000-2008, Soyon Kim
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation theorizes corporate power and tests its impact on income inequality in the globalization context. Three related questions are addressed: First, is state coordination and labor unionism significant in attenuating the detrimental effect of neoliberal globalization on income inequality? Second, to what extent does corporate power mediate the positive/negative effects of global capitalism on income inequality? Last, what is the mechanism through which systematic inequality is institutionalized in high-income democracies? In answering these, corporate power is conceptualized as a compound of quantitative power, directly observable in markets, and qualitative power, indirectly manifested in the relational aspects (i.e. institutional arrangement …
Quality Of Care And Cost Differences In Models Of Care For The Treatment Of Patients With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Pals), Lorraine E Danowski
Quality Of Care And Cost Differences In Models Of Care For The Treatment Of Patients With Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Pals), Lorraine E Danowski
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Motivation: The Affordable Care Act (ACA) has focused attention on the team approach for the delivery of health care. Interdisciplinary teams may be this mechanism to improve health care delivery practices and clinical outcomes. The literature states the driving forces for team collaboration are; the need to care for chronically ill patients, sponsorship by professional organizations, safety and quality initiatives and health care policy. Restraining forces for team collaboration are; lack of expertise, cultural silos, the existing academic infrastructure and reimbursement. One of the issues in identifying the potential gain in outcomes from using a team approach has been the …
Asylum To Community And In Between: Examining The Post-Deinstitutionalization Transitional Experiences Of Mentally Disabled Individuals In Suffolk County, Long Island, Cassandra Evans
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This is an ethnographic research project examining the lives of individuals with psychiatric disabilities in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York during September 2015 to July 2017. This research considers key aspects of deinstitutionalization, community-based mental health care, and the transition processes that resulted from people leaving long-term psychiatric care. I argue that spaces such as designated mental health housing and occupations, like mental health “Program,” limit choices and perpetuate a sense of control and containment, or what I term “chosen for” spaces—living sites and vocations that are chosen for people on their behalf, diminishing their agency and autonomy. Alternatively, …
Resurrection, Rachel Amanda Ansong
Resurrection, Rachel Amanda Ansong
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
“Resurrection” is a poetry manuscript that seeks to understand the connection between spirituality and Blackness (African and African Americans) by scrutinizing twin paradigms of migration and identity loss. It explores these themes under the Biblical myth of dying. It presupposes, through various poetic forms, that the Black saint or sinner must endure the pressures of getting into ‘heaven,’ or escaping the fires of ‘hell.’ Furthermore, they must die to the burdens of society to be ‘born again’ in order for a wholesome existence. These poems also carry personal and literary perspectives, sharing my migratory experiences form Ghana to the United …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
AMPARs play an essential role in fast excitatory neurotransmission. Before native AMPARs can function at the synapse they must be processed intracellularly. These ion channels are synthesized and assembled into multimeric complexes, shuttled in a regulated fashion between intracellular compartments and are finally inserted into the membrane to carry out their function. Important binding partners known as auxiliary subunits associate with AMPARs at the synapse, but also during assembly and trafficking. The presence of auxiliary subunits in AMPAR complexes at the membrane has been demonstrated through electrophysiological studies, showing effects on the gating and pharmacology of AMPARs. The localization of …

At ten years old, Delta, who suffers from a particularly aggressive form of epilepsy, boards a one-way flight to Colorado with her single dad, Tom, after they hear of a life-saving medication for her illness. The medicine—cannabinoid oil—works. As Delta and Tom acclimate to their new environment and learn about the world of medical cannabis, they must overcome the fears and patterns of self-imposed isolation imprinted from the days when an epileptic attack could hit at any moment. Delta meets Reagan, another child with epilepsy, whose recklessness makes Delta question her own preconceived limitations. Without his daughter's illness to distract …
Methylmercury Bioaccumulation, Transformation, And Trophic Transfer In Marine Food Chains, Cheng-Shiuan Lee
Methylmercury Bioaccumulation, Transformation, And Trophic Transfer In Marine Food Chains, Cheng-Shiuan Lee
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Monomethylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxic compound that causes adverse health effects in exposed wildlife and humans. It is primarily accumulated through diet and is the only mercury species to build up in aquatic food chains. However, our understanding with respect to MeHg biogeochemical cycling in marine environments and its interactions with marine organisms is still limited. In order to better understand important processes in the MeHg biogeochemical cycling and factors governing its environmental fate, uptake, accumulation, transformation, and trophic transfer of MeHg in the marine chains, I conducted a series of experiments and measurements associated with marine bacterioplankton, phytoplankton, zooplankton, …

Squaring The Circle, Violet Adrian Turner
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
We do not live linear lives. Time tenses are tidy titles we use to order that which isn't. In remembering—and even in the now—very little is sequential and even less is absolute: Scientists say the present is 80 milliseconds in the past, which means we are always in the future. As a child imaging my grown up life, I never saw this far ahead. Confounding time, coupled with too many out of order deaths, left me addled. But then, allowing my memories to place themselves instead of being forced by my need for order, a comforting cohesion emerged. This memoir …
Aqueous Alteration Of Glass On The Martian Surface: A Comparison Of Remotely-Acquired And Experimental Data Sets, Marcella Roth
Aqueous Alteration Of Glass On The Martian Surface: A Comparison Of Remotely-Acquired And Experimental Data Sets, Marcella Roth
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The abundance and species of chemical alteration products on planetary surfaces are related to the starting composition of unaltered protolith, the style and duration of alteration processes, the fluid composition, and fluid-to-rock ratio, and ultimately, the preservation of those products in rocks and soils. Thus, detection and interpretation of alteration mineral assemblages on Mars is critical to deciphering the history of the Martian surface. This dissertation reports investigations into the characterization of altered synthetic Martian materials and natural analogs followed by the comparison of their spectral properties with remotely-sensed data. For the first time, direct infrared spectral analyses of glasses …
Role And Regulation Of Sphingolipids In Neuropathy, Nicholas Urban Schwartz
Role And Regulation Of Sphingolipids In Neuropathy, Nicholas Urban Schwartz
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease is the most commonly inherited neurological disorder, but its molecular mechanisms remain unclear. One variant of CMT, Charcot-Marie-Tooth 2F (CMT2F), is characterized by mutations in heat shock protein 27 (Hsp27). Bioactive sphingolipids have been implicated in many neurodegenerative diseases, but it was unknown if they were dysregulated in CMT. Liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry was used to profile sphingolipids in CMT models. Hsp27 KO mice demonstrated decreases in ceramide in peripheral nerve tissue at an increased age, suggesting that sphingolipid metabolism may be involved in CMT2F. Indeed, the disease associated Hsp27 S135F mutant demonstrated decreases in mitochondrial ceramides. Given …
Quantitative Imaging Of 3d Cerebral Microvascular Network Dynamics By Ultrahigh -Resolution Optical Coherence Doppler Tomography (Μodt), Jiang You
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Optical domain technologies can provide high spatiotemporal resolution for biomedical research and therefore attract tremendous interests in multiple disciplines including psychiatry, neurology, ophthalmology, oncology, urology and many more. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), after more than 20 years of development, has been becoming one of the most widely-used bio-optical modalities not only for laboratory-based research but also for clinical applications. For example, OCT becomes the standard of care for diagnosing glaucoma. Additionally, its derived velocimetry, optical coherence Doppler tomography (ODT), also demonstrates the unique capability of mapping cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFv) of vascular networks with capillary resolution (&phis;<6µm) and thus allows for the widespread utilization in numerous neurology studies. Although ODT has been widely used in biomedical research, there remain several technical limitations including the shallow penetration depth, low sensitivity for imaging slow flow in capillary and the measurement error due to Doppler angle. To address these challenges, viable solutions are proposed in this dissertation. Chapter 1 starts with a comprehensive review over basic principle of OCT and ODT. Chapter 2-4 explicitly address these OCT technical challenges, for instance, using a 1310nm super-luminescent Diode (SLD) laser source to extend optical penetration depth, utilizing optical contrast agent: intralipid to enhance ODT’s sensitivity for capillary flow detection, implementing numerical methods to extend ODT’s dynamic range and decouple Doppler angle. In addition to these technical improvements, Chapter 5-6 address two biomedical challenges in oncology and psychiatry. Specifically, Chapter 5 introduces a longitudinal optical access to rodent cerebral vasculature and a method of tumor boundary detection, which provides a powerful insight into the tumor progression. Chapter 6 reveals the close correlation between cocaine-elicited transient ischemic attack (TIA) and hypo-perfused cortex. Chapter 7 focuses on the development of multi-modality system and novel imaging scheme for the study of neurovascular coupling. Chapter 8 briefly concludes the contents presented in this dissertation and outlines the future development and potential applications of ODT. | 129 pages
Management Of Undernutrition And Failure To Thrive In Children With Congenital Heart Disease In Low- And Middle-Income Countries, Andrew C. Argent, Rakhi Balachandran, Balu Vaidyanathan, Amina Khan, R. Krishna Kumar
Management Of Undernutrition And Failure To Thrive In Children With Congenital Heart Disease In Low- And Middle-Income Countries, Andrew C. Argent, Rakhi Balachandran, Balu Vaidyanathan, Amina Khan, R. Krishna Kumar
Section of Cardiology
Poor growth with underweight for age, decreased length/height for age, and underweight-for-height are all relatively common in children with CHD. The underlying causes of this failure to thrive may be multifactorial, including innate growth potential, severity of cardiac disease, increased energy requirements, decreased nutritional intake, malabsorption, and poor utilisation of absorbed nutrition. These factors are particularly common and severe in low- and middle-income countries. Although nutrition should be carefully assessed in all patients, failure of growth is not a contraindication to surgical repair, and patients should receive surgical repair where indicated as soon as possible. Close attention should be paid …

Is The State Of The Air-Sea Interface A Factor In Rapid Intensification And Rapid Decline Of Tropical Cyclones?, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas, Mark A. Donelan, Brian K. Haus, Isaac Ginis
Is The State Of The Air-Sea Interface A Factor In Rapid Intensification And Rapid Decline Of Tropical Cyclones?, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas, Mark A. Donelan, Brian K. Haus, Isaac Ginis
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles
Tropical storm intensity prediction remains a challenge in tropical meteorology. Some tropical storms undergo dramatic rapid intensification and rapid decline. Hurricane researchers have considered particular ambient environmental conditions including the ocean thermal and salinity structure and internal vortex dynamics (e.g., eyewall replacement cycle, hot towers) as factors creating favorable conditions for rapid intensification. At this point, however, it is not exactly known to what extent the state of the sea surface controls tropical cyclone dynamics. Theoretical considerations, laboratory experiments, and numerical simulations suggest that the air-sea interface under tropical cyclones is subject to the Kelvin-Helmholtz type instability. Ejection of large …

Investigating The Use Of Multimodality To Promote Literacy Development In Early Years In Kenya, Naomi Muthoni Murungi
Master of Education
Literacy development in early years of children’s learning is very important because it determines success or failure in their future literacy learning. Young children need to be guided into new dimensions in communication and meaning making processes that promote their literacy development. Multimodality is believed to be one such approach that can be used by teachers to achieve this goal because, it draws its strength on the socio-cultural nature of literacy that recognizes the importance of children’s funds of knowledge-the knowledge and skills that children bring from their homes and community. In this study, I sought to find out whether …

Extrusion Deposition Additive Manufacturing Of Fiber Reinforced Semi- Crystalline Polymers, Bastian Brenken
Extrusion Deposition Additive Manufacturing Of Fiber Reinforced Semi- Crystalline Polymers, Bastian Brenken
Open Access Dissertations
The Extrusion Deposition Additive Manufacturing (EDAM) process is an additive manufacturing technique that shows great potential for producing tooling and molds for traditional composite manufacturing methods. However, additive manufacturing processes are still optimized based on empirically calibrated process conditions and require costly trial and error approaches. During the EDAM process with composites, the temperature history of the printing material drives the evolution of internal stresses in a printed component, which could result in a failure of the print or excessive deformation. Therefore, a set of simulation tools was developed in this work to model the solidification behavior of a fiber …
A Computational And Experimental Investigation Of Lignin Metabolism In Arabidopsis Thaliana., Rohit Jaini
A Computational And Experimental Investigation Of Lignin Metabolism In Arabidopsis Thaliana., Rohit Jaini
Open Access Dissertations
Predominantly localized in plant secondary cell walls, lignin is a highly crosslinked, aromatic polymer that imparts structural support to plant vasculature, and renders biomass recalcitrant to pretreatment techniques impeding the economical production of biofuels. Lignin is synthesized via the phenylpropanoid pathway where the primary precursor phenylalanine (Phe) undergoes a series of functional modifications catalyzed by 11 enzyme families to produce p-coumaryl, coniferyl, and sinapyl alcohol, which undergo random polymerization into lignin. Several metabolic engineering efforts have aimed to alter lignin content and composition, and make biofuel feedstock more amenable to pretreatment techniques. Despite significant advances, several questions pertaining to carbon …
Automated Patch Point Placement Capability For Hybrid Trajectory Targeting, Christopher M. Spreen
Automated Patch Point Placement Capability For Hybrid Trajectory Targeting, Christopher M. Spreen
Open Access Dissertations
In this investigation, the automation of trajectory discretization, in the form of patch point placement, is explored, along with the effects of such automated strategies on differential corrections processes. To begin, current differential corrections algorithms are presented and evaluated. Extensions of these algorithms into a higher-order ephemeris force model are explored and a hybrid differential corrections algorithm suitable for high-fidelity dynamical environments is proposed. With an appropriate differential corrections algorithm in place, a metric for quantifying the sensitivity of a trajectory to small perturbations is detailed. This sensitivity metric, known as a Lyapunov exponent, is subsequently leveraged to provide information …
