A Retrospective Chart Review Comparing Nutritional Screening Tools (Mna-Sf And Must) In Identifying Malnutrition In Older Adults Admitted To A Hospital In 2016, Elizabeth Schneider

2017 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

There are many factors that contribute toward negative outcomes in the healthcare setting for hospitalized older adults (Tappenden, Quatrara, Parkhurst, Malone, Fanjiang, & Ziegler, 2013). One of these factors includes meeting nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, many cases of malnutrition in patients 65 years and older, who are admitted to the hospital, go unnoticed due to the lack of nutritional screening tool implementation (Tappenden et al., 2013). Therefore, this study looks at two of the most popular nutritional screening tools, the MNA-SF and MUST, to identify malnutrition in older adults with a preexisting diagnosis of either malnutrition or failure to thrive and …

Design Of The Integral Parts Of A Bridge Substructure To Be Built In 15 Days, Nyoka Amy Florius Dec 2017

Design Of The Integral Parts Of A Bridge Substructure To Be Built In 15 Days, Nyoka Amy Florius

2017 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Bridges are key elements of our transportation system. They allow one highway to go over another, or over railroad tracks. They allow highways and railroads to pass over water. In any bridge, the components can be separated into the substructure and superstructure. While they are both key parts of an overall structure, the structure would not exist if it did not have a foundation. The project was to design a fast-tracked bridge, one that could be built in 15 days. The bridge abutment and bent cap were designed in detail, and methods to facilitate the fast-track construction were considered in …

Obesity, Dyspnea On Exertion And Health Related Quality Of Life In Obese Males, Lauren Crane

2017 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

Previous research has shown that one in three otherwise healthy obese adults experience dyspnea on exertion (DOE). Both dyspnea and obesity can have a negative influence on a person’s health related quality of life (HRQOL). However, it is unclear if these relationships can be found in otherwise healthy mild-to-moderately obese men. In this study, we examined the relationship between 1) obesity and HRQOL, and 2) dyspnea on exertion (DOE) and HRQOL. A secondary analysis was conducted from the baseline data of an interventional 12-week weight loss study. Volunteers filled out the Medical Outcomes Short Form-36 (SF36) as the measurement for …

Improving Cell Seeding Of Decellularized And Porated Porcine Arterial Scaffolds, Harrison Smallwood Dec 2017

Improving Cell Seeding Of Decellularized And Porated Porcine Arterial Scaffolds, Harrison Smallwood

All Theses

Coronary artery disease is one of the number one killers in the U.S. Current treatment of using CABG surgery has limitations from availability of autologous grafts, and low patency of artificial grafts. Tissue engineered grafts would ideally provide more availability, while also replicating the mechanical properties of the native grafts. Current issues in tissue engineering arteries lie in using an effective scaffold to get correct mechanical properties, and allowing for cell infiltration to assist in integrating with native tissue once implanted. This study shows the use of a decellularized and chemically and mechanically porated porcine carotid artery in mechanical characterization …

Experimental Study On Resilient Behavior Of Geocell-Reinforced Recycled Asphalt Pavement Base Layer: Model Development, Manikanta Saladhi Dec 2017

Experimental Study On Resilient Behavior Of Geocell-Reinforced Recycled Asphalt Pavement Base Layer: Model Development, Manikanta Saladhi

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Recycled Asphalt Material (RAP) is defined as removed and reprocessed pavement materials containing asphalt and aggregates. These materials are obtained when asphalt pavements are removed for the rehabilitation and maintenance of distressed pavements. The use of RAP as a base/subbase aggregate in pavement construction is technically and environmentally a sustainable solution, and conserve use of natural resources by requiring less virgin aggregate in pavement construction. Past studies showed that the use of 100% RAP as base course lacks shear strength and can undergo large deformations. Geocells are a system of three-dimensional, interconnected, honeycombed cellular structures that resist the lateral expansion …

A Thermal Inertia Approach To Precision Irrigation Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Coupled With High-Resolution Multispectral Imagery, Kevin James Wienhold

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Soil moisture is a critical variable in the optimization of irrigation scheduling in water resources management. Despite using tens to hundreds of thousands of gallons of water each day, many golf courses rely on a sparse network of point measurements to estimate irrigation requirements for turfgrass management. This study describes a novel system known as Precision Irrigation Soil Moisture Mapper (PrISMM) in which an unmanned aerial vehicle equipped with multispectral sensors is used to estimate volumetric water content (VWC) at a golf course using a thermal inertia approach. PrISMM consists of three central components, including (1) high-resolution thermal and optical …

Performance Of Light-Frame Wooden Structure (Lfws) Subjected To Combined Wind And Flood Hazards, Ajay Baniya Dec 2017

Performance Of Light-Frame Wooden Structure (Lfws) Subjected To Combined Wind And Flood Hazards, Ajay Baniya

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Light Frame Wooden Structures (LFWS), which are more prone to wind damage by virtue of their light weight, sustain severe damage when they are subjected to simultaneous flood and wind. A difficulty in Multi-hazard design for wind and flood is that the load and resistance factor make use of different design philosophies developed by different sub-disciplines. After Multi-hazard events, in most cases, it is complicated to determine the sole damage done by flood or wind alone. The load path of Wooden structure is already ambiguous, the addition of flood characteristics makes the analysis and design process more complicated. It has …

A Study On The Turbulence Characteristics And Mixing Performance Of Streamwise Vortex Interactions In Supersonic Flow, Cody R. Ground Dec 2017

A Study On The Turbulence Characteristics And Mixing Performance Of Streamwise Vortex Interactions In Supersonic Flow, Cody R. Ground

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The scramjet engine offers the unique capability to enable sustained airbreathing flight at hypersonic speeds. However, in order to reach its full application potential, further technological maturation of several system level components is necessary. One such component is the fuel injection system. The flow conditions characteristic of the scramjet combustor are such that the rate-limiting step in the fuel injection/mixing/combustion process is the mixing of the fuel and air. For this reason, the fuel injection system must be designed with the goal of enhancing the rate of fuel/air mixing. One method that has shown potential to enhance fuel/air mixing in …

A Deep Chandra Study Of Galactic Type Ia Supernova Remnant G299.2-2.9, Seth Aaron Post Dec 2017

A Deep Chandra Study Of Galactic Type Ia Supernova Remnant G299.2-2.9, Seth Aaron Post

Physics Dissertations - Archive

In this thesis we perform a comprehensive analysis of Galactic Type Ia supernova remnant G299.2-2.9. For this study we analyze our deep 628 ks Chandra observation data of G299.2-2.9. G299.2-2.9 has a complex multiple shell-like structure consisting of a bright inner shell, with enhancements ("knots") in the northeastern portion of the shell, and a fainter diffuse outer shell. Our spectral analysis of the outer shells of G299.2-2.9 shows that the bright inner and faint outer shells appear to be emission features from the swept-up ambient medium (by the supernova blast wave) whose density is relatively uniform along the distance from …

Studies In Liquid And Ion Chromatography, Akinde Florence Kadjo

Chemistry & Biochemistry Dissertations - Archive

Height- and area-based quantitation approaches reduce two-dimensional data to a single value. For a calibration set, there is a single height- or area-based quantitation equation. We introduce a new quantitation method; a Width based method that consists of using the width of a peak (Wh), at any height h, (a fixed height, not a fixed fraction of the peak maximum), leading to any number of calibration curves. This particularity of width-based quantitation (WBQ) allows the quantitation of peaks over very large scales, making the quantitation of truncated peaks possible. We showed that WBQ can offer superior overall performance (lower root …

Enantioselective Synthesis Of An Anticancer Ruthenium Polypyridyl Complex (Rpc) And Influence Of Chiral Selectivity On Dna Photocleavage, Shomita Ferdous

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses - Archive

Ruthenium polypyridyl complexes (RPCs) represent a promising therapeiutic class of drugs for transition-metal based anticancer drug development. The complex [(phen)2Ru(tatpp)Ru(phen)2] (44+) is a RPC which has shown success in both cell free and cellular assay. Unlike many other RPCs, 44+ can selectively kill malignant cells without light irradiation from external sources. This binuclear complex 44+ is a DNA intercalator containing redox-active ligand tatpp (9,11,20,22-Tetraaza tetrapyrido[3,2-a:2'3'-c:3'',2''- 1:2''',3''']-pentacene) which cleaves DNA in presence of a mild reducing agent, i.e. glutathione (GSH).1,2,3 The cellular assay (MTT assay) with different types of malignant cells has also established this as an equally potent cytotoxic agent …

Petrophysical Properties Of The Woodford Formation In The Ardmore Basin In Oklahoma, U.S.A, Benjamin Ryan Dec 2017

Petrophysical Properties Of The Woodford Formation In The Ardmore Basin In Oklahoma, U.S.A, Benjamin Ryan

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

A prolific source rock in Oklahoma, the Woodford Shale has sourced petroleum reservoirs for millions of years and produced oil and gas since 1939. Not until the shale boom of the early 2000’s was the full potential of the Woodford Shale, as a reservoir, realized. The focus of this research is to characterize three (the main ones) of the four petro-physically distinct zones within the Ardmore Woodford Shale in order to investigate the ideal zone for hydrocarbon extraction. The Woodford Shale is composed of tight, organic-rich, interbedded shale and chert beds deposited along a marine slope. Due to its tight …

Nano-Scale Petrophysical Studies Of The Gothic Shale Interval In The Paradox Basin, Colorado, U.S.A., Marvin L. Dunbar

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Hydrocarbon production from shale has become a main energy source for the United States. Consequently, an increased knowledge of the petrophysical properties of shale such as porosity, permeability, tortuosity, and fluid-rock interactions (e.g., contact angle, imbibition) will improve production efficiency. Because of their minute size (nanoscale), the knowledge of pore structure (i.e., pore geometry and connectivity) has proven difficult to understand. Analyzing the pore size distribution and pore connectivity of Gothic Shale from selected locations in the Montezuma County of Colorado will lead to recommendations for greater oil production efficiency, fostering innovation into a thriving, environmentally safe, oil and gas …

Mapping Structural Deformation Associated With The Formation Of The Blue Ridge Salt Dome, Mason Phillip Bonner Dec 2017

Mapping Structural Deformation Associated With The Formation Of The Blue Ridge Salt Dome, Mason Phillip Bonner

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Geologic mapping and subsurface imaging around salt has remained difficult. Seismic imaging is difficult near salt due to the large velocity contrasts between salt and the surrounding rocks, the steeply dipping salt and sediment interface, and the presence of pinching beds on the flanks of the dome; but when combined with well control from previously drilled wells on top and on the flanks of a salt dome, a more complete profile of the subsurface structure becomes possible. Previous work has produced models of salt dome formation and the surrounding structural deformation, and when compared to seismic data, show a good …

Nanopetrophysics Characterization Of The Mancos Shale Formation In The San Juan Basin Of Northwestern New Mexico, U.S.A., Richard Kalteyer Dec 2017

Nanopetrophysics Characterization Of The Mancos Shale Formation In The San Juan Basin Of Northwestern New Mexico, U.S.A., Richard Kalteyer

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

The Mancos Shale of the San Juan Basin is no stranger to the drilling of oil and gas, but traditional exploration within the region has predominantly been limited to the use of conventional vertical wells. Due to the recent advances in drilling and completion technologies, a large focus of oil and gas exploration has shifted towards the development of unconventional reservoirs. Because of these significant breakthroughs, it comes as no surprise that an increased interest in further developing the Mancos Shale has taken place. However, like most unconventional plays, low porosity and extremely low permeability characterize the Mancos Shale. These …

Does Short-Term Whole Body Vibration Plate Training Have An Effect On Balance In College-Aged Females?, Alyssa Bragg

2017 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive

The risk of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in the knee is two to ten times higher in women than in men. Biomechanical differences, including the stability of the knee, have been identified as potential causes. The purpose of this study was to determine if five days of whole body vibration-based training would result in improvements in the balance of healthy females. Subjects were randomized into treatment and control groups and were pre and post-tested using the Y-Balance test. The treatment group performed six core and lower extremity exercises using a whole body vibration plate over five treatment sessions.
