Implementing Interprofessional Alcohol Sbirt In The Emergency Department, Vicki Bacidore Dec 2017

Implementing Interprofessional Alcohol Sbirt In The Emergency Department, Vicki Bacidore

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Purpose: Alcohol misuse is one of the leading causes of illness, disease, injury and death in the Unites States. For many patients, the Emergency Department (ED) visit may provide the only therapeutic opportunity to influence problematic drinking behavior. Screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) is an evidence-based approach that may reduce alcohol-related morbidity and mortality, and improve health outcomes and quality of life. The purpose of this project was to develop, deliver, and evaluate an interprofessional education program on alcohol SBIRT, and implement the SBIRT protocol in the ED.

Design: A quasi-experimental design, single-sample, non-randomized cohort was used …

Hospital-Wide Communication To Improve Quality Outcomes Of Stroke Patients, Amy Garner, Angela Rheal Dec 2017

Hospital-Wide Communication To Improve Quality Outcomes Of Stroke Patients, Amy Garner, Angela Rheal

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Purpose: Time is vital in the initial care of stroke patients. Swift recognition of symptoms, immediate access to diagnostic tests, and appropriate treatment play a vital role in a patient's functional outcomes (Middleton et al., 2015). Delays in any one of these areas can postpone treatment and thus complicate the recovery of the patient. Identified disruptions at this facility included delays in patient registration, lack of coordination for medical order entry, and communication issues regarding imaging availability. This project sought to evaluate and eliminate possible interruptions in service, with a goal of reducing the time to evaluation and treatment.

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Session I presented Saturday, September 16, 2017

Purpose: Stroke Centers work on quality initiatives to improve the care stroke patients receive. In August 2015, door to computerized tomography (CT) scan time was one of the quality metrics which was focused on. Many centers were working on direct to CT for patients that arrived via Emergency Medical Services (EMS) transport, but it was important to have all stroke patients go directly to CT no matter how they arrived. The purpose of this project was to decrease door to CT for both ambulatory and EMS arrivals.

Design: Quality improvement project.

Transforming Clinical Leadership: Standardized Charge Nurse Development, Susan Hanser, Stephanie Fowler Dec 2017

Transforming Clinical Leadership: Standardized Charge Nurse Development, Susan Hanser, Stephanie Fowler

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Charge nurses dramatically impact the workflow of a nursing unit but often feel ill-prepared to lead. At our community hospital, we created a charge nurse development class that incorporates four identified themes: 1) Leadership principles: an introduction to the standards by which all leaders at our organization conduct themselves. This invites discussion and reflection on what leadership looks like at the bedside. 2) Key quality concepts: metrics and reimbursement facts, how our facility compares to others and discussions about how the charge nurse can effect change. 3) Communication techniques: feedback scripting that enables the nurses to initiate difficult conversations and …

Aspire To Inquire: Launching A Joint Accreditation Application For Interprofessional Continuing Education, Patricia Smith

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

The organization's Blueprint for Quality and Patient Safety is the framework driving initiatives for improvements in clinical care, safety, and the patient experience across the continuums of care. The Unit-Based Clinical Leadership (UBCL) team structure operationalized this framework by promoting an interprofessional approach to achieving patient safety and quality across the organization. Their efforts underscored the need for IPE and development. The director of the university's office of CME and the corporate director of Nursing Professional Development championed formalizing the continuing interprofessional education structure. This initiative was embraced by the highest levels of the organization's educational and clinical leadership teams. …

Are Disagreements Agreeable? Evidence From Information Aggregation, Dashan Huang, Jiangyuan Li, Liyao Wang Dec 2017

Are Disagreements Agreeable? Evidence From Information Aggregation, Dashan Huang, Jiangyuan Li, Liyao Wang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Most studies on disagreement focus on cross-sectional asset returns and well-recognized disagreement measures generally cannot predict the stock market with a horizon less than 12 months. This paper proposes three aggregate disagreement indexes by aggregating information across 20 disagreement measures. We show that disagreement measures collectively have a common component that has significant power in predicting the stock market both in- and out-of-sample. Consistent with the theory developed by Atmaz and Basak (2017), the indexes asymmetrically forecast the market with greater power in high sentiment periods. Moreover, the indexes negatively predict economic activities, and positively predict market volatility, illiquidity, and …

Reorganization Of Thalamic Intrinsic Connectivity Following Anterior Temporal Lobectomy, Xiaosong He, Chaitanya Ganne, Michael R. Sperling, Ashwini Sharan, Joseph I. Tracy

Department of Neurosurgery Posters

The thalamus has played a crucial role in determining surgical outcome following anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) (He, et al., 2017). Before successfully quantifying the impact of the thalamus on ATL outcomes, this structure’s own intrinsic connectivity must be understood. Accordingly, we characterize thalamic intrinsic connectivity through resting-state fMRI (rsfMRI) longitudinally, exploring its change pre- to post-surgery.

Interactional Competence In Japanese As An Additional Language: An Overview, Tim Greer, Midori Ishida, Yumiko Tateyama Dec 2017

Interactional Competence In Japanese As An Additional Language: An Overview, Tim Greer, Midori Ishida, Yumiko Tateyama

Faculty Publications

Speaking a language involves more than just knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation: It also requires the abilities to interpret what your interlocutor is saying, to formulate a relevant response, and to deliver it in a timely manner. In addition, it entails skills such as dealing with trouble in talk when it arises and being able to identify an appropriate moment to start speaking. In short, it requires interactional competence (IC). As this applies to speaking a language other than one's first, this volume of Pragmatics & Interaction examines specific interactional competences {ICs) that speakers of Japanese as an additional …

Developing Recipient Competence During Study Abroad, Midori Ishida

Faculty Publications

Partly as a response to Kinginger's (2009) call for studies that examine the interaction in which L2 speakers participate during study abroad and its relationship with long-term development, this chapter explores what features of social interaction might afford L2 speakers opportunities to "form new practices" (Pallotti & Wagner, 2011, p. 1), especially when using receipts.

Zinc Chloride Activates Phospho-Akt And Promotes Chondrocyte Maturation In The Atdc5 Chondrogenic Cell Line, Donya T. Burgess Dec 2017

Zinc Chloride Activates Phospho-Akt And Promotes Chondrocyte Maturation In The Atdc5 Chondrogenic Cell Line, Donya T. Burgess

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Fracture healing is characterized by inflammation, cartilage formation, bone deposition, and remodeling. Endochondral ossification is an important part of callus formation that relies on the maturation of chondrocytes. Early in their maturation these cells express collagen type II alpha 1 chain (COL2A1) and express collagen type X alpha 1 chain (COL10A1) as they mature further and become hypertrophic chondrocytes. Activation of the insulin pathway is considered a primary factor involved in the initiation of chondrogenesis and its progression during bone healing. Insulin mimetics like zinc chloride (ZnCl2) have been shown to improve bone healing outcomes and enhance bone …

Investigating Multiple Domains Of Household Livelihood Security: Insights From Urban Slums In Bangladesh, S Akter, S Rahman Dec 2017

Investigating Multiple Domains Of Household Livelihood Security: Insights From Urban Slums In Bangladesh, S Akter, S Rahman

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

In this article, the authors construct indices of Household Livelihood Security (HLS) domains, namely, economic, food, health, and education securities and empowerment with data from 1,120 poor households in two urban settlements of Bangladesh. The authors then jointly identify domain-specific socioeconomic determinants employing a multivariate Tobit model. A quintile analysis of domains shows high levels of inequalities among these poor households. The HLS domains are significantly positively correlated, and a host of factors significantly influence individual HLS domain. Interventions targeted at improving education, provision of business training and building of land asset are suggested to improve livelihood security.

When Rules And Common Sense Collide: Expressions, Roots, And Impact Of Informal Civil Society In Ukraine, Svitlana Krasynska Dec 2017

When Rules And Common Sense Collide: Expressions, Roots, And Impact Of Informal Civil Society In Ukraine, Svitlana Krasynska

Dissertations

Western donors have dominated third sector developments in contemporary Eastern Europe in efforts to replicate their own institutional models as a way of reconstructing the region’s post-totalitarian civil society. These efforts resulted in limited success, frustrating the donor community and puzzling scholars. Civil society in the region has long been labeled as weak based on a general lack of citizen participation in formal organizations. This dissertation argues that such assessment of civil society fails to recognize the role of below-the-radar civic engagement in contexts where informal practices permeate economic, political and social spheres.

Based on 70 in-depth interviews with civil …

Fostering Strengths: Using Testimonios To Identify Community Cultural Wealth In Foster Youth, Katherine Mullin Dec 2017

Fostering Strengths: Using Testimonios To Identify Community Cultural Wealth In Foster Youth, Katherine Mullin

Master's Projects and Capstones

Foster youth voices have been silenced in schools, work environments, and many other settings. There is very little research around what works well for foster youth and what their assets are. Foster youth have many skills and resources that they use to navigate systems that continually marginalize them. But these are often ignored or overlooked. This project uses youth voices through Testimonios and Community Cultural Wealth to create a training for group home staff.

Tidal Conversion And Mixing Poleward Of The Critical Latitude (An Arctic Case Study), Tom P. Rippeth, Vasiliy Vlasenko, Nataliya Stashchuk, Brian D. Scannell, J. A.Mattias Green, Ben J. Lincoln, Sheldon Bacon Dec 2017

Tidal Conversion And Mixing Poleward Of The Critical Latitude (An Arctic Case Study), Tom P. Rippeth, Vasiliy Vlasenko, Nataliya Stashchuk, Brian D. Scannell, J. A.Mattias Green, Ben J. Lincoln, Sheldon Bacon

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

The tides are a major source of the kinetic energy supporting turbulent mixing in the global oceans. The prime mechanism for the transfer of tidal energy to turbulent mixing results from the interaction between topography and stratified tidal flow, leading to the generation of freely propagating internal waves at the period of the forcing tide. However, poleward of the critical latitude (where the period of the principal tidal constituent exceeds the local inertial period), the action of the Coriolis force precludes the development of freely propagating linear internal tides. Here we focus on a region of sloping topography, poleward of …

The Use Of Formative Instructional Practices To Improve Student Performance, Courtney L. St. John-Wacker Dec 2017

The Use Of Formative Instructional Practices To Improve Student Performance, Courtney L. St. John-Wacker

Theses and Dissertations

This study explores teacher and school leadership perceptions on the use of Formative Instructional Practices (FIP) in classroom settings located in a large urban school district. Research indicates that using formative assessment can increase student achievement; however, professional learning of such practices is needed (Frey & Fisher, 2013; Harrison, O’Hara & McNamara, 2015; Wiliam, Lee, Harrison & Black, 2004). Research questions developed for this study included one main question and three secondary questions. The main question explored the participant’s perceptions of FIP implementation while the secondary questions focused on the development of student motivation and classroom assessments for students. Additionally, …
