A Novel Weak Estimator For Dynamic Systems, Moinak Bhaduri, Justin Zhan, Carter Chiu Dec 2017

A Novel Weak Estimator For Dynamic Systems, Moinak Bhaduri, Justin Zhan, Carter Chiu

Mathematical Sciences Faculty Research

In this paper, we propose a novel approach for classifying incoming continuous data under a non-stationary environment. A class of estimators termed stochastic learning weak estimators has been generalized to include continuous time sampling and countable state categories. The method is founded on non-stationary Markov chain techniques and is useful in diverse applications, such as consumer behavior analysis, e-mail spam classification, or understanding drug effectiveness. In terms of tracking the true state probabilities, these weak estimators consistently outperform traditional competitors such as maximum likelihood estimates. Only one user defined parameter is necessary and the method is free of subjective ‘‘moving …

"Hinabing Ugnayan": Nature Of Caring Among Filipino Nurses Working With Children, Rudolf Cymorr Kirby P. Martinez

Dissertations

This study, rooted on the phenomenological philosophy, explored the nature of caring among Filipino nurses working with children. Seven (7) participants were gathered as co-researchers and were carefully chosen based on the following present criteria: They are willing to articulate, share, participate, and describe their lived experiences, and they are registered nurses, currently working at a pediatric hospital for at least two years. The experiences of the co-researchers were subsequently gathered and enriched via the following methods: Interview, Storytelling, Participant Observation, Art, Group Discussion, Immersion and Reflective Resonance. Subsequently, three levels of reflective analysis was done following the process developed …

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Session I presented Saturday, September 16, 2017

Purpose: Violence against staff in the Emergency Department is seen as part of the role assumed when someone begins a career in emergency medicine. This research project set out to determine what staff in the emergency department percieved as a violent act, and how often violent acts are reported by staff compared to the actual incidence of violent acts against staff.

Design: Emergency department staff were surveyed anonymously to discover their perception of what is a violent act, frequency of violence, and circumstances of reporting; A retrospective, randomized sampling of patient records, recording …

Sexual Assault Exam: Utilizing Simulation To Increase Nursing Confidence, Kari Watson, Eileen Bonin, Brie Auxier Dec 2017

Sexual Assault Exam: Utilizing Simulation To Increase Nursing Confidence, Kari Watson, Eileen Bonin, Brie Auxier

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Purpose: It was recognized that emergency department (ED) nurses were undertaking an examination of patients who have been sexually assaulted, but had not received formal training. ED nurses were unfamiliar with the exam process and were concerned of incorrectly collecting forensic evidence. Staff would wait until a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) became on call to complete the exam, therefore delaying throughput. The purpose of this staff development was to enhance the emergency nurse's knowledge and skills in caring for sexually assaulted patients. Simulation was identified as a way to build the nurses' confidence with performing a forensic examination.

Improving Scanned Medications, Amanda Cothran, Nicholas Harmon, Kevin Jr. Smith

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Purpose: Barcode medication verification has been proven to be an effective safety measure to help prevent errors during medication administration. It is necessary to provide safe medication administration to ensure quality care but verification still remains an opportunity within the emergency department. The objective of our project was to improve the overall safety of medication administration and reduce the rate of administration errors within the ED by ensuring that medications were scanned using a barcode verification system.

Design: This project was designed for quality assurance. The goal for bedside medication verification (BVM) using a scanned barcode method is 80%. It …

Transform Your Shared Governance Council: Measure Its Health!, Jennifer Isabelle Rheingans, Robert Hess, Diana Swihart, Stacey Brull

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

A few published tools measure the presence of nursing shared governance. However, where are instruments that help councils further develop, evaluate, and sustain their activities and outcomes? This interactive presentation for the first time introduces the Shared Governance Council Function Survey, a new tool designed to assess and guide councils with a template for best practices and assessment of strengths and opportunities of current council functioning.

A national team of shared governance experts in practice and theory convened to generate the Shared Governance Council Function Survey, framed by Donabedian's Quality Model for Structure, Process, and Outcome (1988). The …

Why Aren't Our Nurses As Diverse As Our Patients?, Leslie Harder Dec 2017

Why Aren't Our Nurses As Diverse As Our Patients?, Leslie Harder

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Background: The American Association of Colleges reported a "strong connection between a culturally diverse nursing workforce and the ability to provide quality, culturally competent patient care." According to the US Census Bureau, the percentage of ethnic and racial minority groups was 37% in 2012 while nurses from minority backgrounds "represent 19% of the registered nurse (RN) workforce." The 2010 IOM report on the future of nursing states "the current nursing workforce will need to grow more diverse." The increasing diversity in the patient population requires nursing to adopt methods to address the educational pipeline to attract and retain nurses from …

Patient-Centered Care: Teaching Psychosocial Skills To New Nurses, Elizabeth Wierman, Susan Jones Dec 2017

Patient-Centered Care: Teaching Psychosocial Skills To New Nurses, Elizabeth Wierman, Susan Jones

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Although the adoption of patient-centered care is increasingly more frequent in healthcare organizations and well supported in nursing, interdisciplinary educational strategies in the acute care setting to support patient-centered care training for caregivers of patients with both medical and behavioral health problems are noticeably lacking (Kitson et al., 2013). This disparity is particularly worrisome in the acute care setting, given the prevalence of comorbid behavioral health problems in the medical inpatient population (Sledge et al., 2015). In an effort to address this gap, our RN Residency Program developed an 8 hour education curriculum, Psychosocial Foundations, aimed at providing resident and …

Trust Me...I'M A Trauma Nurse, Wendy Hyatt, Stephen Clayton, Erin Kunkel, Elisha Nunley

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Purpose: There is a large number of staff in the Emergency Department, high turnover rates, many different areas of focus which lead to inconsistencies in the care and documentation of care for trauma patients. The goal was to develop a small group of specially trained Emergency Department nurses to care for trauma patients and initiate the quality improvement process at the bedside.

Design: Course content was researched, developed and approved by both the trauma service and the emergency department. The content was based on evidence-based practice found in current literature, including American College of Surgeons requirements and hospital policy. Highlights …

Improving The Emergency Department Handoff To Facilitate Inpatient Throughput, Amy Garner, Veronica Sorenson Dec 2017

Improving The Emergency Department Handoff To Facilitate Inpatient Throughput, Amy Garner, Veronica Sorenson

General Submissions: Presentations (Oral and Poster)

Poster presentation Session F presented Friday, September 15, 2017

Purpose: Emergency Department (ED) throughput has been identified as a major factor that can impact care and quality throughout the hospital (Handel et al., 2010). Delays in patient flow may derive from nursing handoff issues, availability of beds, and policies that inhibit patient transport (Baker & Esbenshade, 2015).. This project aimed to eliminate delays in throughput and maximize patient flow.

Design: This quality improvement (QI) project used lean principles and a Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle to ensure that change was sustained.

Setting: This project was conducted in a suburban, ANCC Magnet recognized …
