Primary Care Of Latino Patients In The United States: A Comparative Analysis Of Personal Experiences In Safety-Net Healthcare Organizations, Grant Douglas Tore Dec 2017

Primary Care Of Latino Patients In The United States: A Comparative Analysis Of Personal Experiences In Safety-Net Healthcare Organizations, Grant Douglas Tore

Senior Theses

This thesis aims to compare two types of healthcare organizations that compose the safety-net healthcare system in the United States with the utilization of both personal experiences and extensive research. The first are community health centers, which receive federal funding in order to serve specific populations with in their communities. In my experience, this population was migrant farmworkers, all who came to the United States legally with H2A visas. The second model is that of the free medical clinic, which operates on a volunteer/staff model, but receives no government funding. Serving primarily uninsured patients, free clinics such as the Good …

The Importance Of Planning: Science Education From Many Points Of View, Kirsten Morgan Edwards Dec 2017

The Importance Of Planning: Science Education From Many Points Of View, Kirsten Morgan Edwards

Senior Theses

The purpose of this thesis project was to bridge the divide between public lands, such as parks, and the education system; national parks and monuments are great resources for education. In addition to promoting outside of the classroom education, this project explores different teaching methods and how changing pedagogical practice can help more students learn in the long term. In order to explore different methods of teaching, I created three different lesson plans that could be used, for example, in places like Congaree National Park, to bring education outside of the traditional school environment. These lesson plans are supplemental materials …

Relationship Between Self-Reported Oral Health And Self-Esteem In Two Columbia, Sc Populations, Matthew Ablonczy, Elizabeth Smith Dec 2017

Relationship Between Self-Reported Oral Health And Self-Esteem In Two Columbia, Sc Populations, Matthew Ablonczy, Elizabeth Smith

Senior Theses

The importance of oral health to overall health cannot be overstated. For example, oral health can be used for early diagnosis of diseases such as diabetes. Furthermore, it has been well studied that self-esteem is related to oral health. Individuals with proper oral health care have more confidence to interact with others, which results in higher self-esteem. Those who lack the ability to pay for oral healthcare are thus at a great disadvantage. The present study sought to investigate the relationship between oral health and self-esteem in two Columbia, SC populations through surveying. There were two study populations, students at …

Professional Practices (Art 399), Madison Henderson

Professional Practices (ART 399)

I’ve always had a passion for art and design as well as assisting those with mental and physical disabilities. When I was searching for a career in the arts and I discovered Art Therapy I knew I had found my calling. Art has always assisted me through my life experiences. I want to be able to help those with mental and physical disabilities do the same.

The major inspiration for my work is being able to assist individuals with mental and physical disabilities and seeing their everyday struggles and how they overcome them, that your typical individual would take for …

Professional Practices (Art 399), Shateanna Stewart

Professional Practices (ART 399)

I create clay forms that are distressed, altered, textured and colored. Most take a utilitarian form, but not exclusively. I am interested in connecting to the medium and getting lost in the creation of the piece. I am not interested in perfection, but rather find the most amazement in what it is we are capable of; changing a chunk of clay into something wonderful and surprising. My main focus is on the creation of something beautiful that hopefully enriches my audience in the same way it does me. With the goal of creating organic beauty in mind, I found clay …

Professional Practices (ART 399)

Artist Statement

As a Graphic Designer the goal of most of my work is to relay information to the viewer. I try to insert as much of myself into each work that I design and draw influence from Designers such as Michael Schwab, Massimo Vignelli and David Carson. Using typography and illustration to convey emotion and personality.

My art evokes a light and airy mood through the use of minimal color, negative space and geometric shapes. The mood of my work is reflected by my personality, easy going and kind, the work is reacted to visually by the viewer in …

Analysis Of Diagnostic, Preventive, And Disease-Modifying Therapeutic Measures Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Ghazal Habib Havoutis Dec 2017

Analysis Of Diagnostic, Preventive, And Disease-Modifying Therapeutic Measures Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Ghazal Habib Havoutis

HCNSO Student Capstones

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common late-onset neurodegenerative disorder and cause of dementia, characterized by the formation of neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaque deposits. The heterogeneous nature of the disease (both genetically and environmentally) makes it difficult to prevent or cure. Without prevention, the prevalence of AD is expected to triple by 2050. However, because the diagnosis of AD is usually preceded by years of cognitive impairment, early detection may aid in reducing prevalence. Thus, there is a need for validated diagnostic measures for early and improved diagnosis and prevention. In this review, current and ongoing classifiers of early …

Artificial Intelligence: Application Today And Implications Tomorrow, Sean Semmler, Zeeve Rose Dec 2017

Artificial Intelligence: Application Today And Implications Tomorrow, Sean Semmler, Zeeve Rose

Duke Law & Technology Review

This paper analyzes the applications of artificial intelligence to the legal industry, specifically in the fields of legal research and contract drafting. First, it will look at the implications of artificial intelligence (A.I.) for the current practice of law. Second, it will delve into the future implications of A.I. on law firms and the possible regulatory challenges that come with A.I. The proliferation of A.I. in the legal sphere will give laymen (clients) access to the information and services traditionally provided exclusively by attorneys. With an increase in access to these services will come a change in the role that …

Spillover Effects Through Worker Mobility: Evidence From Slovenian Smes, Tina Golob Dec 2017

Spillover Effects Through Worker Mobility: Evidence From Slovenian Smes, Tina Golob

Economic and Business Review

The paper tests for potential productivity spillovers arising through worker mobility from foreign owned firms to domestic SMEs using Slovenian data, covering the period from 2002 to 2010. Separate analyses were done for the service and manufacturing sector. My paper contributes to a segment of literature, that is relatively scarce, since it requires the use of linked employer-employee databases, which emerged only recently. I find robust evidence in support of the hypothesis, that flows of highly educated workers from foreign owned firms to domestic SMEs boost total factor productivity growth of domestic service SMEs.

Testing The Hypothesis Of The Adequacy Of The Distance-To-Default As An Indicator Of Changes In Banks’ Risk Exposures, Božo Jašovič Dec 2017

Testing The Hypothesis Of The Adequacy Of The Distance-To-Default As An Indicator Of Changes In Banks’ Risk Exposures, Božo Jašovič

Economic and Business Review

A distance to default indicates the distance measured in standard deviations of the market value of assets from the default point. The hypothesis that distance to default is indicative of changes in the levels of risk of the banking system since it precedes accounting data that indicate similar changes was tested on the basis of selected financial ratios. We have applied a modification developed by Toda and Yamamoto of the standard Granger causality test to see whether there is causality between distance to default and the selected financial ratios. Contrary to expectations, we could only prove Granger causality from lagged …

Corporate Financial Reporting In Slovenia: Historical Development, Contemporary Challenges And Policy Implications, Maja Zaman Groff, Meta Duhovnik Dec 2017

Corporate Financial Reporting In Slovenia: Historical Development, Contemporary Challenges And Policy Implications, Maja Zaman Groff, Meta Duhovnik

Economic and Business Review

Slovenia historically belongs to the continental legal system but has built its corporate financial reporting framework on the principles of measurement and recognition primarily derived from the Anglo-American system. The aim of the article is to present the development of the accounting practice in the transition period in Slovenia and to critically assess the current corporate financial reporting framework in Slovenia. Contingency approach, recognising that best solutions are dependent upon broader setting and that solutions that are effective in one country can be inappropriate in others, is used in the assessment of the current corporate financial reporting framework. The article …

Value Investing Within The Universe Of S&P500 Equities, Gašper Smolič, Aleš Berk Dec 2017

Value Investing Within The Universe Of S&P500 Equities, Gašper Smolič, Aleš Berk

Economic and Business Review

By employing financial data screening we show that profitable value investment strategy can be built within the S&P 500 stock universe. We use simple ranking of stocks based on four screens that we identify as good joint candidates to influence stock returns – book-to-market ratio, return on equity, market capitalization and risk of bankruptcy. As expected, our four-variable portfolio consistently beats the market, which points to the fact that investors inefficiently price stocks in the world's most developed capital market. We compare performance of our investment strategy with market performance, and also adjust for risk used in both current conventional …
