Willow Tree Figures, Aubrey Squires Dec 2017

Willow Tree Figures, Aubrey Squires

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

The picture on the left is of all the Willow Tree figures that I have collected as of now. The garden angel and the angel of kindness are on the air conditioner unit. One is in the middle front and the other is on the right side at the end. The second picture is of the nativity set that started the desire to collect more figures. The last picture is of the card that came with the angel of kindness. It says, “Thank You. Appreciating your kindness!”

The Business Of Writing, Mikayla Doyle Dec 2017

The Business Of Writing, Mikayla Doyle

Tutor's Column

One of the greatest aspects of university study is the ability to learn from a wide variety of sources. Often, we assume that most of our knowledge about writing comes from our English classes. However, as a business student, I have learned many things that have helped me to become a better writer. In this essay I will address the importance of writing a purposeful thesis, creating a logical argument, using concision in writing, and making writing understandable.

Chemistry Publications

1,6-Diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) is a commonly used fluorescence probe for studying cell membrane-lipids due to its affinity toward the acyl chains in the phospholipid bilayers. In this work, we investigated its use in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) as a new matrix for mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) of mouse and rat brain tissue. DPH exhibits very minimal matrix-induced background signals for the analysis of small molecules (below m/z of 1000). In the negative ion mode, DPH permits the highly sensitive detection of small fatty acids (m/z 200-350) as well as a variety of large lipids up to m/z of 1000, including lyso-phospholipid, …

Inhibitory Or Excitatory? Optogenetic Interrogation Of The Functional Roles Of Gabaergic Interneurons In Epileptogenesis, Hui Ye Dec 2017

Inhibitory Or Excitatory? Optogenetic Interrogation Of The Functional Roles Of Gabaergic Interneurons In Epileptogenesis, Hui Ye

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Alteration in the excitatory/inhibitory neuronal balance is believed to be the underlying mechanism of epileptogenesis. Based on this theory, GABAergic interneurons are regarded as the primary inhibitory neurons, whose failure of action permits hyperactivity in the epileptic circuitry. As a consequence, optogenetic excitation of GABAergic interneurons is widely used for seizure suppression. However, recent evidence argues for the context-dependent, possibly “excitatory” roles that GABAergic cells play in epileptic circuitry. We reviewed current optogenetic approaches that target the “inhibitory” roles of GABAergic interneurons for seizure control. We also reviewed interesting evidence that supports the “excitatory” roles of GABAergic interneurons in epileptogenesis. …

Comparison Of Photosynthesis Among Three Chaparral Species In The Family Anacardiaceae, Catelyn T. Price, Sarah A. Holmes, Brandon T. Harris, Stephen D. Davis, Karagan L. Smith, Talia A. Cao Dec 2017

Comparison Of Photosynthesis Among Three Chaparral Species In The Family Anacardiaceae, Catelyn T. Price, Sarah A. Holmes, Brandon T. Harris, Stephen D. Davis, Karagan L. Smith, Talia A. Cao

Featured Research

Recent argumentative data showed a lack of niche differentiation amongst three Banksia species in Australia conducted by Lamont and Bergl, and the Anacardiaceae family in the native chaparral of the Santa Monica Mountains are supposed to be significantly similar1. Because of this we wanted to test if there would be a significant difference between the stomatal conductance, photosynthesis, and water potential in samples of the Rhus ovata, Rhus integrifolia, and Malosma laurina (Rhus laurina) species. We tested this idea by collecting the stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rates of each plant species in the same general location with …

Post-Drought Recovery In The Chaparral Shrub Ceanothus Spinosus, Katie C. Lindley, Kylie N. Smith, Nina R. Duchild, Stephen D. Davis, Karagan L. Smith, Talia A. Cao

Featured Research

This study investigated the abilities of Ceanothus spinosus, or greenbark ceanothus, to recover after a historic drought. This plant is one of the hardiest in the Santa Monica Mountains, providing soil stabilization and nutrients to other organisms in the ecosystem. In a previous investigation done during the drought, it was found that C. spinosus subjects growing in their natural habitat experienced significant dieback, with predawn water potentials falling as low as -7 MPa and native embolisms at an average of 47.17% (Ross et al., 2016). Other parameters tested were stomatal conductance, photosynthetic rate, and chlorophyll fluorescence. Compared to the …

The Rate Of Fungal Pathogen Growth (Botryosphaeria Dothidea)
In Stems Of The Chaparral Shrub Rhus Integrifolia, Jayla D. Simmons, Edward J. Ayala, Kamara J. Satcher, Stephen D. Davis, Karagan L. Smith, Talia A. Cao

Featured Research

The fungus Botryosphaeria dothidea will grow between one to five millimeters after a week on the chaparral species Rhus integrifolia. To test this, we inoculated six individual shrub located behind the greenhouse on Campus Walk Road . On each shrub we selected two branches, receiving adequate and equal sunlight and inoculated one branch with the fungus B. dothidea and the other with a plain gel in order to compare the growth with a control group. The data we collected at the end of the one week period was similar to our initial hypothesis. The shortest growth was on the …

Faith Development Beyond Religion: The Ngo As Site Of Islamic Reform, Nermmen Mouftah

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Anthropological field studies of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in their unique cultural and political contexts. Cultures of Doing Good: Anthropologists and NGOs serves as a foundational text to advance a growing subfield of social science inquiry: the anthropology of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Thorough introductory chapters provide a short history of NGO anthropology, address how the study of NGOs contributes to anthropology more broadly, and examine ways that anthropological studies of NGOs expand research agendas spawned by other disciplines. In addition, the theoretical concepts and debates that have anchored the analysis of NGOs since they entered scholarly discourse after World War II …
