Sequestration And The Engagement Of Developing Economies In A Global Carbon Market, Reza Oladi, Arthur J. Caplan, John Gilbert
Sequestration And The Engagement Of Developing Economies In A Global Carbon Market, Reza Oladi, Arthur J. Caplan, John Gilbert
Applied Economics Faculty Publications
We develop a differential game within a general equilibrium framework of carbon sequestration with and without international trade. We characterize the game's equilibrium and demonstrate how a global carbon permit market can be structured to induce the participation of developing countries through the harnessing of their potential to sequester carbon. We show that a permit market with carbon sequestration is mutually welfare improving for developed and developing nations, and that international trade in finished goods and carbon permits lowers the stock of global pollution.

Financial Synergies And Systemic Risk In The Organization Of Bank Afþliates, Elisa Luciano, Clas Wihlborg
Business Faculty Articles and Research
We analyze theoretically banks’ choice of organizational structures in branches, subsidiaries or stand-alone banks, in the presence of public bailouts and default costs. These structures are characterized by different arrangements for internal rescue of affiliates against default. The cost of debt and leverage are endogenous. For moderate bailout probabilities, subsidiary structures, wherein the two entities provide mutual internal rescue under limited liability, have the highest group value, but also the highest risk taking as measured by leverage and expected loss. We explore the effect of constraints on leverage and policy implications. The conflict of interests between regulators, who minimize systemic …

Metabolism And Photolysis Of 2,4-Dinitroanisole In Arabidopsis, Hunter W. Schroer, Xueshu Li, Hans Joachim Lehmler, Craig L. Just
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
New insensitive munitions explosives, including 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN), are replacing traditional explosive compounds to protect soldiers and simplify transport logistics. Despite the occupational safety benefits of these new explosives, feasible strategies for cleaning up DNAN from soil and water have not been developed. Here, we evaluate the metabolism of DNAN by the model plant Arabidopsis to determine whether phytoremediation can be used to clean up contaminated sites. Furthermore, we evaluate the role of photodegradation of DNAN and its plant metabolites within Arabidopsis leaves to determine the potential impact of photolysis on the phytoremediation of contaminants. When exposed to DNAN for three …

Tutor's Column
Time management is a tool that everyone should learn to use. Tutors must manage time in the tutoring center for a successful session as well as in their everyday life. When tutoring sessions are rushed because time isn’t watched, there are many consequences. Relationships built between students and tutors are damaged, anxiety begins to build up, and an overall feeling of complete exhaustion begins to rule our bodies. It begins affecting individual lifestyles in and out of the workplace. It creates extreme stress levels which can impair abilities to control our emotions. There are several tactics we can turn to …

Parallel Cosine Nearest Neighbor Graph Construction, David Anastasiu, George Karypis
Parallel Cosine Nearest Neighbor Graph Construction, David Anastasiu, George Karypis
Faculty Publications
The nearest neighbor graph is an important structure in many data mining methods for clustering, advertising, recommender systems, and outlier detection. Constructing the graph requires computing up to n2 similarities for a set of n objects. This high complexity has led researchers to seek approximate methods, which find many but not all of the nearest neighbors. In contrast, we leverage shared memory parallelism and recent advances in similarity joins to solve the problem exactly. Our method considers all pairs of potential neighbors but quickly filters pairs that could not be a part of the nearest neighbor graph, based on similarity …

Interactive Cabaret And Amahl And The Night Visitors, Usu Opera, Errik Hood, Dallas Heaton
All Music Department Programs
Much has changed since 1951, when Gian Carlo Menotti composed Amahl and the Night Visitors as the first opera ever written for television. Amahl and the Night Visitors is the story of a miracle that occurs when the Magi stop on their journey to see the Baby Jesus, and it has been a perennial favorite since its first live telecast more than 65 years ago. Despite its lasting popularity, some of the elements of this stunning work have not aged well. Referring to Amahl, the disabled young boy at the center of the story, as ‘crippled’, the calling out of …

Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS)
The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) is an international comparative study of student achievement directed by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA). PIRLS 2016 represents the fourth such study since PIRLS was first conducted in 2001. Australia has participated in the two most recent cycles – PIRLS 2011 and 2016. In Australia, PIRLS is managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) and is jointly funded by the Australian Government and the state and territory governments. The goal of PIRLS is to provide the best policy-relevant information about how to improve teaching and …

The monthly concert series, Listen in the Library, featured student performers in library spaces on the Logan campus. These short, pop-up concerts were one of the ways the USU Libraries was involved in USU’s “Year of the Arts” in 2017-2018. While the library regularly features students’ visual art and exhibits, Listen in the Library brought the performing arts into the space, making student accomplishments in music audible and visible to a community outside the concert hall.

Studying Abroad With A Mental Illness, Meghan E. O'Donnell
SURGE
Whenever anybody asks me about my experience studying abroad, I lie. I tell them that it was transformative, that I returned a more confident, learned, and enlightened person. I tell them all of the things I wish were true, pretending that all of the dreams I had about how studying abroad would affect me were actually the reality of my experience. [excerpt]
