Real-Time Indoor Assistive Localization With Mobile Omnidirectional Vision And Cloud Gpu Acceleration, Feng Hu, Zhigang Zhu, Jeury Mejia, Hao Tang
Publications and Research
In this paper we propose a real-time assistive localization approach to help blind and visually impaired people in navigating an indoor environment. The system consists of a mobile vision front end with a portable panoramic lens mounted on a smart phone, and a remote image feature-based database of the scene on a GPU-enabled server. Compact and elective omnidirectional image features are extracted and represented in the smart phone front end, and then transmitted to the server in the cloud. These features of a short video clip are used to search the database of the indoor environment via image-based indexing to …
Mutational Analysis Of The Molluscum Contagiosum Virus Mc160 Protein, Henri Estanbouli
Mutational Analysis Of The Molluscum Contagiosum Virus Mc160 Protein, Henri Estanbouli
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The Molluscum Contagiosum Virus (MCV), belongs to a family of large DNA viruses called Poxviridae. MCV causes a common skin infection resulting in benign neoplasms. 122 million cases of MC were reported in 2010. The virus is not primarily lethal, though fatalities have occurred due to secondary bacterial infections. Even with the high volume of reported cases, MCV is very much understudied, and its pathogenicity is not well understood. Thus, with that in mind, a more in-depth understanding of the MCV-host interactions is a priority. Presumably during infection, MCV utilizes immune evasion molecules to inhibit activation of the host pro-inflammatory …

Mexican Working-Class Literature, Or The Work Of Literature In Mexico, Eugenio Di Stefano
Mexican Working-Class Literature, Or The Work Of Literature In Mexico, Eugenio Di Stefano
Foreign Languages and Literature Faculty Publications
Working-class literature has never had a wide audience in Mexico, always overshadowed by other types of literature, such as the novel of the Mexican Revolution, the regionalist novel, and the indigenous novel. Nevertheless, there is no better place, as this chapter will suggest, to consider the status of literature and its relationship to history and ideology than from the genre of work and the worker. Approaching working-class literature as an evolving genre in relation to different modernization projects, this chapter will map out similarities and point to differences between various labor literatures—including proletarian literature in the 1930s, the testimonio (a …
Catalytic Activity Of Zsm-5 Zeolite Loaded With Transition Metals For The Selective Catalytic Reduction Of Nox, Saaid I.M., Mohamed A.R., Bhatia S. Bhatia
Catalytic Activity Of Zsm-5 Zeolite Loaded With Transition Metals For The Selective Catalytic Reduction Of Nox, Saaid I.M., Mohamed A.R., Bhatia S. Bhatia
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
Catalytic activity measurement were carried out on catalysts formulated from ZSM-5 zeolite separately loaded with transition metals (Cu, Co, Ni, Fe) for the removal of NOx in simulated diesel exhaust conditions. Various factors were investigated to compare the performance of these catalysts including catalyst preparation method, Si/Al ratio of the parent zeolite support, and durability in the exhaust stream containing water vapor or SO2. In many experimental conditions except in the presence of water vapor or SO2, Cu-ZSM5 remained the most active catalyst with 100% NOX conversion at around 350°C. C0-ZSM5 and Ni-ZSM5 could also achieve complete NOx conversion but …
Using Two Time Scales Of Turbulence For Boundary Layer Flows, Saeid Nawaf H.
Using Two Time Scales Of Turbulence For Boundary Layer Flows, Saeid Nawaf H.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
A near wall improvement of the k-ε model of turbulence is proposed and evaluated. The present model takes into account the asymptotic behavior of turbulent scales near wall region and for free turbulence region. The Kolmogorov turbulent time scale is introduced as a lower limit. The model is used for prediction of turbulent boundary layer flows. Predictions compared with experimental data of several flow cases, with encouraging results.

Design Of Robust H∞ Power System Stabilizer Using Normalized Coprime Factorization, Ngamroo I., Dechanupaprittha S.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
This paper proposes a new design procedure of robust power system stabilizers (PSS) using H∞ control via normalized coprime factorization (NCF) approach. The design procedure of the proposed PSS is systematically described. Moreover, the selection method of the weighting function in H∞ control design is explained in a simple manner. The performance and robustness of the proposed PSS are investigated in comparison with the conventional PSS by examining the case of a single machine connected to an infinite bus (SMIB) system. The simulation results are illustrated to ensure the effectiveness of the proposed PSS.

Electron Microscopy Of Entomopathogenic Fungal Invasion On The Cabbage-Heart Caterpillar Crocidolomia Binotalis Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), Hashim N., Ibrahim Y.B., Tan Y.H.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
The infection on Crocidolomia binotalis Zeller by the entomopathogenic fungi Paecilomyces fumosoroseus (Wise) Brown and Smith, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill, and Metarhizium anisopliae var. majus (Metsch.) Sorokin was studied histopathologically using electron microscopy. Conidia which landed on the cuticle germinated within four to six hours. In the case of B. basiana, shortly after landing, an appresorium was formed that attached itself fast onto the cuticle at the point of fungal entry. The infected larva then entered the moribund state 12 to 24 hours after inoculation. Death of the larva followed 24 to 48 hours later. By then the body cavity …

© 2017 Macmillan Publishers Limited, part of Springer Nature. All rights reserved. Antarctica's continental-scale ice sheets have evolved over the past 50 million years. However, the dearth of ice-proximal geological records limits our understanding of past East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) behaviour and thus our ability to evaluate its response to ongoing environmental change. The EAIS is marine-terminating and grounded below sea level within the Aurora subglacial basin, indicating that this catchment, which drains ice to the Sabrina Coast, may be sensitive to climate perturbations. Here we show, using marine geological and geophysical data from the continental shelf seaward of …

The Ability Of Different Imputation Methods To Preserve The Significant Genes And Pathways In Cancer, Rosa Aghdam, Taban Baghfalaki, Pegah Khosravi, Elnaz Saberi Ansari
Publications and Research
Deciphering important genes and pathways from incomplete gene expression data could facilitate a better understanding of cancer. Different imputation methods can be applied to estimate the missing values. In our study, we evaluated various imputation methods for their performance in preserving significant genes and pathways. In the first step, 5% genes are considered in random for two types of ignorable and non-ignorable missingness mechanisms with various missing rates. Next, 10 well-known imputation methods were applied to the complete datasets. The significance analysis of microarrays (SAM) method was applied to detect the significant genes in rectal and lung cancers to showcase …

Progress For Whom, Toward What? Progressive Politics And New York City’S Mandatory Inclusionary Housing, Samuel Stein
Progress For Whom, Toward What? Progressive Politics And New York City’S Mandatory Inclusionary Housing, Samuel Stein
Publications and Research
In both its historical Progressive Era roots and its contemporary manifestations, U.S. urban progressivism has evinced a contradictory tendency toward promoting the interests of capital and property while ostensibly protecting labor and tenants, thus producing policies that undermine its central claims. This article interrogates past and present appeals to urban progressive politics, particularly around housing and planning, and offers an in-depth case study of one of the most highly touted examples of the new urban progressivism: New York City’s recently adopted Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program. This case serves to identify the ways in which progressive rhetoric can disguise neoliberal policies. …
A Physical Framework For Evaluating Flood Inundation Risk Under Different Water Management Scenarios, Sage Hardesty
A Physical Framework For Evaluating Flood Inundation Risk Under Different Water Management Scenarios, Sage Hardesty
Master's Theses
In the United States, many river floodplains contain critical infrastructure that is vulnerable to extreme hydrologic events. These structures are designed based on flood frequency analysis aimed at quantifying the magnitude of the extreme events. However, many floodplains are ungauged or poorly gauged, making flood frequency analysis significantly uncertain. This research topic focuses on estimating flood frequency peaks for an ungauged critical infrastructure within Connecticut’s Naugatuck River Basin utilizing a physically based approach consisting of a distributed rainfall-runoff model forced by long-term reanalysis meteorological data and a hydraulic model driven by high-resolution LiDAR derived terrain elevation data. The hydrologic model …
Combined Noncyclic Scheduling And Advanced Control For Continuous Chemical Processes, Damon Petersen, Logan D. R. Beal, Derek Prestwich, Sean Warnick, John Hedengren
Combined Noncyclic Scheduling And Advanced Control For Continuous Chemical Processes, Damon Petersen, Logan D. R. Beal, Derek Prestwich, Sean Warnick, John Hedengren
Faculty Publications
A novel formulation for combined scheduling and control of multi-product, continuous chemical processes is introduced in which nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) and noncyclic continuous-time scheduling are efficiently combined. A decomposition into nonlinear programming (NLP) dynamic optimization problems and mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problems, without iterative alternation, allows for computationally light solution. An iterative method is introduced to determine the number of production slots for a noncyclic schedule during a prediction horizon. A filter method is introduced to reduce the number of MILP problems required. The formulation’s closed-loop performance with both process disturbances and updated market conditions is demonstrated through …

Profiling The Audience For Self-Transcendent Media: A National Survey, Arthur A. Raney, Sophie Janicke-Bowles, Mary Beth Oliver, Katherine R. Dale, Robert P. Jones, Daniel Cox
Communication Faculty Articles and Research
This article reports the findings from a national survey of self-transcendent (or inspiring) media audience members in the United States. Exposure to self-transcendent content is socially significant because, theoretically, it can orient users towards matters beyond themselves, ultimately promoting connections with others and altruistic behaviors. However, to date, little is known about the daily audiences for such fare. Four primary questions guided the investigation: (1) What are the media sources and contents identified as “inspiring” by the audience?, (2) Who makes up the current U.S. audience for self-transcendent media content?, (3) What personality traits and viewer characteristics are associated with …

Cholesterol Regulation Of Pulmonary Endothelial Calcium Entry Following Chronic Hypoxia, Bojun Zhang
Cholesterol Regulation Of Pulmonary Endothelial Calcium Entry Following Chronic Hypoxia, Bojun Zhang
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Chronic hypoxia (CH)-induced pulmonary hypertension (PH) is associated with diminished ATP-induced endothelial Ca2+ entry as well as membrane cholesterol in pulmonary arteries. Store-operated Ca2+ entry (SOCE) and depolarization-induced Ca2+ entry are major components of the response to ATP and are similarly decreased after CH. Because endothelium-dependent vasodilation is closely associated with pulmonary endothelial [Ca2+]i, the blunted agonist-induced Ca2+ influx in pulmonary artery endothelial cells (PAEC) may contribute to the development of CH-induced PH. Interestingly, impaired agonist-induced Ca2+ influx in PAEC following CH can be restored by membrane cholesterol supplementation. In the current studies, we hypothesized that impaired Ca2+ entry in …
