Race, Socioeconomics, Intelligence, And Criminal Offending: Accounting For Variation In Criminal Justice Outcomes, Elise Marie Ferguson
Race, Socioeconomics, Intelligence, And Criminal Offending: Accounting For Variation In Criminal Justice Outcomes, Elise Marie Ferguson
Sociology ETDs
Racial disparities in arrests and incarceration are well documented and typically considered the result of differences in rates of offending. However, research indicates variation in rates of arrest and incarceration by race is not due entirely to differences in offending. While criminal offending can result in part from differences in economic and social factors, these factors also influence criminal justice outcomes. The focal concerns perspective posits that criminal justice actors develop a schema – a pattern of thought or behavior – which can influence decision making and lead to differential treatment by race in criminal justice outcomes. This schema can …

Layer-By-Layer Assembled Membranes With Immobilized Porins, Sebastián Hernández, Cassandra Porter, Xinyi Zhang, Yinan Wei, Dibakar Bhattacharyya
Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
New and advanced opportunities are arising for the synthesis and functionalization of membranes with selective separation, reactivity, and stimuli-responsive behavior. One such advancement is the integration of bio-based channels in membrane technologies. By a layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of polyelectrolytes, outer membrane protein F trimers (OmpF) or “porins” from Escherichia coli with central pores ∼2 nm in diameter at their opening and ∼0.7 × 1.1 nm at their constricted region are immobilized within the pores of poly(vinylidene fluoride) microfiltration membranes, in contrast to traditional ruptured lipid bilayer or vesicle processes. These OmpF-membranes demonstrate selective rejection of non-charged organics over ionic solutes, …
Vu: Integrating Ar Technology And Interaction Into An Event Planning App, Yun Liu
Vu: Integrating Ar Technology And Interaction Into An Event Planning App, Yun Liu
Theses
Planning a social event can be expensive and time consuming. To minimalize the risk of event problems, the organizer can consult professional event planners. However, a consultant can also be costly. Therefore, purchasing decor, food, and other items, without
knowing if they look right or fit the venue, is a guessing game, and the game could be an expensive one.
If the original plan cannot be completed efficiently, then modifying or improving these works are likely to cost extra time and funds. However, testing the revised plan may also increase the likelihood of risk in future.
By integrating Augmented Reality …
Paleo Journey: An Interactive Paleolithic Cave Art Experience. Using The User Experience (Ux) Design Process To Develop An Interactive And Immersive Paleolithic Cave Art Exhibit Suitable For Children Between Five (5) And Seven (7) Years Old., James J. Parrillo
Theses
Most European caves containing Paleolithic cave art paintings (dating from approximately 10,000 – 50,000 years BP) are no longer accessible to the general public, and their visitor centers often require lengthy travel for tourists. Microgrid control technologies have been continuously developed over 20 years. However, there is still a lack of communication architecture that is able to provide fast, reliable and elastic services for multi-level data transmission and adaptable network management. This dissertation solves this intractable problem by integrating programmable networks …
Computational Framework For Modeling Adhesion Of The Red Blood Cell Membrane Using Impetus, Vi Quoc Ha
Computational Framework For Modeling Adhesion Of The Red Blood Cell Membrane Using Impetus, Vi Quoc Ha
Doctoral Dissertations
Modeling multiple receptor-ligand interactions, where receptors are distributed on a fluctuating membrane, is challenging since it involves two very distinct timescales. We overcame this obstacle by introducing an essentially time coarse-graining algorithm by employing a stochastic methodology to compute the probability of the bond remaining intact at specific time step. We developed a computational framework to model the complex receptor and ligand interaction by using a survival probability function. Using the model, we studied how membrane oscillations are affected by adhesion between substrate ligands and membrane receptors, and how diffusion of membrane receptors depends on ligand-receptor adhesion.

Sexual Recombination And Increased Mutation Rate Expedite Evolution Of Escherichia Coli In Varied Fitness Landscapes, George Peabody, Hao Li, Katy Kao
Faculty Publications
Sexual recombination and mutation rate are theorized to play different roles in adaptive evolution depending on the fitness landscape; however, direct experimental support is limited. Here we examine how these factors affect the rate of adaptation utilizing a “genderless” strain of Escherichia coli capable of continuous in situ sexual recombination. The results show that the populations with increased mutation rate, and capable of sexual recombination, outperform all the other populations. We further characterize two sexual and two asexual populations with increased mutation rate and observe maintenance of beneficial mutations in the sexual populations through mutational sweeps. Furthermore, we experimentally identify …

Redesigning High School Mathematics Curriculum To Enhance College Readiness, Alicia Sanfillippo
Honors Theses
As a peer tutor and academic coach at Western Michigan University since Fall 2014, I frequently assisted students with mathematics and science courses. Working closely with university students made me realize that many students lacked important skills that I would expect to have been developed prior to college. The skills that I realized students were lacking with respect to math literacy were pattern recognition, the ability to transfer skills, and comprehension and use of mathematical language. I set out to develop these skills as I prepared for an internship in an remedial Algebra II class at Kalamazoo Central High School. …
Characterizations Of Some Classes Of Graphs That Are Nearly Series-Parallel, Victoria Fontaine
Characterizations Of Some Classes Of Graphs That Are Nearly Series-Parallel, Victoria Fontaine
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A series-parallel graph can be built from a single-edge graph by a sequence of series and parallel extensions. The class of such graphs coincides with the class of graphs that do not have the complete graph K4 as a minor. This dissertation considers a class M1 of graphs that are close to being series-parallel. In particular, every member of the class has the property that one can obtain a series-parallel graph by adding a new edge and contracting it out, or by splitting a vertex into two vertices whose neighbor sets partition the neighbor set of the original …

Context-Sensitive Human Activity Classification In Video Utilizing Object Recognition And Motion Estimation, Abigail R. Jacoby
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
Classification of human activity in raw video presents a challenging problem that remains unsolved, and is of great interest for large datasets. Though there have been several attempts at applying image processing techniques to video to recognize human activity in controlled video segments, few have attained a significant degree of success in raw videos.
Raw video classification exhibits significant challenges that can be addressed through the use of geometric information. Current techniques employ a combination of temporal information of the feature space or a combination of Convolutional and Recurrent Neural Networks (CNN and RNNs). CNNs are used for frame feature …

Obesity And Diabetes: Evaluating The Impact Of Promotores As A Prevention And Intervention Strategy In The Latino Community, Jessica Castaneda
Master's Projects and Capstones
This paper aims to examine obesity and diabetes among the Latino population as a health problem. As the largest minority racial group in the U.S, Latino rates of obesity and diabetes are greatly higher than whites. The prevalence of obesity in Latinos is 45% compared to that of whites at 34.5% (CDC, 2015). The disproportionate rates at which Latinos are affected by obesity and diabetes have prompted numerous programs to combat this health problem. Promotores or Latino community health workers have been able to provide the important piece of culturally and linguistically appropriate education for the population. Evidence shows Promotores …
