Giant Magnetoresistance (Gmr): Spinning From Research To Advanced Technology, Kok K.Y., Ng I.K.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
In this paper, we aim to examine the research and development of materials demonstrating the giant magnetoresistance (GMR) property, a novel material property that has revolutionalised the advances of magnetic sensor and mass-memory technology today. A comprehensive outline for the fundamental materials aspects as well as the physics of the underlying mechanisms behind the GMR property is given. Recent development of GMR materials in data storage industry and other potential technological applications exploiting the GMR property are also discussed.
Comparison Of Bacterial And Archaeal Communities In The Subsurface Versus Surface: Implications For Nitrogen Cycling, Jason Cody Kimble 5059801155
Comparison Of Bacterial And Archaeal Communities In The Subsurface Versus Surface: Implications For Nitrogen Cycling, Jason Cody Kimble 5059801155
Biology ETDs
Arid-land caves are thought to be extremely nitrogen-limited, but almost nothing is known about how microbes in subsurface arid-land environments obtain this essential element to meet cellular demand. The depth of caves beneath the surface may represent a critical factor affecting microbial nitrogen cycling in these environments. Percolation of water and nutrients from a precipitation pulse event would affect deep arid-land carbonate caves at a much slower rate. To obtain nitrogen in deep, carbonate caves, microorganisms could use fixed N in the host rock for assimilatory biochemical pathways or for a respiratory electron acceptor. However, the latter process leads to …

An Introduction To The Economic Impact Of Dry Edible Bean Production, Timothy Meyer
Cornhusker Economics
Amazing statistics about Nebraska agriculture are plentiful. For example, Nebraska produces the 4th most output of agricultural products in the United States, while ranking only 37th in population. No wonder Nebraska's agricultural output ranks first when adjusted for population. It is safe to say most Nebraskans understand the importance of beef, corn, soybeans and ethanol. On the other hand, secondary crops play an important role in the economy as well, especially in the western portion of the state.

Factors Affecting The Evolution Of Inclusion Populations During Steelmaking And Casting Processes, Obinna Adaba, Laura Bartlett, Mingzhi Xu, Ronald J. O'Malley
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Investigations into the evolution of inclusion populations during ladle processing and continuous casting are reviewed. Details of the steelmaking practices employed in BOP and EAF steelmaking have been observed to have a strong influence on the size distribution, quantity, composition, phases and morphology of the final inclusion population delivered to the caster. Examples of the effects of different processing paths on the evolution of inclusion populations are presented. The importance of preexisting inclusion populations on the formation and removal of new inclusion populations is also reviewed and discussed.

Transcription Activator Like Effector Nucleases (Talens): A New, Important, And Versatile Gene Editing Technique With A Growing Literature, Philip Barnett
Publications and Research
Transcription activator like effector nucleases (TALENs) is a new and powerful technique in genetic engineering that can delete deleterious genes or add beneficial genes to organisms. It is being widely studied to improve crops and livestock, and is also being investigated clinically. Comparing the details of how both TALENs and its competitor, CRISPR-Cas9, function, reveals the potential advantages of TALENs. The growing literature, besides covering the scientific and technical aspects of TALENs, also includes pertinent information on regulatory aspects and the public’s perception and acceptance of TALENs.

The Value Of Cryptocurrencies: How Bitcoin Fares In The Pockets Of Federal And State Courts, Brandon M. Peck
The Value Of Cryptocurrencies: How Bitcoin Fares In The Pockets Of Federal And State Courts, Brandon M. Peck
University of Miami Business Law Review
A recent Eleventh Judicial Circuit Court of Florida decision has raised concerns over how both federal and state courts consider the unregulated cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. In State of Florida v. Michell Abner Espinoza, Judge Teresa Pooler held that Bitcoin did not fall under the statutory definitions of “payment instrument” or “monetary instrument” because virtual currency is not directly specified nor could it be included within one of the defined categories listed in Fla. Stat. § 560.103(29) or 896.101(2). Furthermore, Judge Pooler, alluding to the doctrine of lenity, refused to hold Espinoza responsible under a statute that is “so vaguely written …
Uk Governance: From Overloading To Freeloading, Richard Woodward
Uk Governance: From Overloading To Freeloading, Richard Woodward
Articles
The UK's ongoing political turbulence has prompted a reprise of debates from the 1970s when many concluded the country was ungovernable. Then, the most influential diagnosis conceptualised the UK's governance problem as one of ‘overloading’ caused by the electorate's excessive expectations. This article argues that these accounts overlooked another phenomenon besieging UK governance during this period. This phenomenon was freeloading: the withering of government capacity deriving from the ability of actors to enjoy the benefits of citizenship without altogether contributing to the cost. In the interim, these problems have become endemic, not least because of the unspoken but discernible policy …

Performance Of Membranes Crosslinked With Glutaraldehyde In Pervaporation Separation, Tan S.H., Ahmad A.L., Nawawi M.G. Mohd., Hassan H.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
Chitosan membranes crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) were prepared through a solution method, where the dry homogeneous chitosan membranes were immersed into the reaction solutions containing 1.25 x 10-3 wt. % of glutaraldehyde (GA). The extent of the crosslinking was controlled by varying the crosslinking time from 1 to 5 minutes. The prepared crosslinked membranes were used for pervaporation dehydration of isopropanol-water mixtures. The influence of feed composition on the separation characteristics has been investigated. The 2-minute-crosslinked-membrane yields the highest water concentrations in the permeate with moderate flux at 50 wt. % of isopropanol in the feed solution. The overall pervaporation …

Play The Game, Don't Let It Play You: A Case Study Of African American Male Student-Athletes' Experiences At A Division Ii Historically Black College, Eric A. Bailey Ii
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The media's overrepresentation of Black men in entertainment often portrays that the only Black males who are successful are those who are either professional athletes or entertainers. Therefore, at an early age, many Black boys aspire to capitalize on what society speculates to be their best attributes--physical ability. African American male athletes spend countless hours practicing, exerting a great deal of energy, and enduring physical pain and injuries while competing, all for the slim hope of securing a roster spot on a professional sports team. While college is intended to be a place to acquire the necessary skills or credentials …
When Does Sexuality-Based Discrimination Motivate Political Participation?, Douglas D. Page
When Does Sexuality-Based Discrimination Motivate Political Participation?, Douglas D. Page
Political Science Faculty Publications
The established consensus in political behavior research is that discrimination by political institutions motivates marginalized groups to vote and protest their conditions. However, existing studies miss a comparison between states with high and low levels of political discrimination, and they miss a comparison between states before and after the development of opportunities for groups to mobilize. In particular, a growing body of research shows that sexual-minority groups face discrimination to varying degrees across Europe. Sexual minorities in states with high levels of discrimination lack the support of other minority-group members, which encourages political participation. The analysis is based on surveys …

Using Crude Palm Oil (Cpo) As Diesel Engine Fuel, Lim T.H., Bari S., Yu C.W.
ASEAN Journal on Science and Technology for Development
In this study, heating was used to lower the viscosity of CPO to an acceptable level. 60°C was found to be the optimum heating temperature for CPO to ensure smooth flow in the fuel system, but heating further up to 100°C did not improve the engine performance. A comparison between CPO and diesel in terms of engine performance, combustion characteristics and emission showed that the brake specific fuel consumprion (bsfc) for CPO was 13% higher at 400 kPa brake mean effective pressure (bmep), and the highest bmep achieved was 13.5% lower. However, CPO fuel gave a brake thermal efficiency. Combustion …

In this paper we propose a real-time assistive localization approach to help blind and visually impaired people in navigating an indoor environment. The system consists of a mobile vision front end with a portable panoramic lens mounted on a smart phone, and a remote image feature-based database of the scene on a GPU-enabled server. Compact and elective omnidirectional image features are extracted and represented in the smart phone front end, and then transmitted to the server in the cloud. These features of a short video clip are used to search the database of the indoor environment via image-based indexing to …
Mutational Analysis Of The Molluscum Contagiosum Virus Mc160 Protein, Henri Estanbouli
Mutational Analysis Of The Molluscum Contagiosum Virus Mc160 Protein, Henri Estanbouli
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The Molluscum Contagiosum Virus (MCV), belongs to a family of large DNA viruses called Poxviridae. MCV causes a common skin infection resulting in benign neoplasms. 122 million cases of MC were reported in 2010. The virus is not primarily lethal, though fatalities have occurred due to secondary bacterial infections. Even with the high volume of reported cases, MCV is very much understudied, and its pathogenicity is not well understood. Thus, with that in mind, a more in-depth understanding of the MCV-host interactions is a priority. Presumably during infection, MCV utilizes immune evasion molecules to inhibit activation of the host pro-inflammatory …
