Species Specific Anaesthetics For Fish Anaesthesia And Euthanasia, Gd Readman, Sf Owen, Tg Knowles, Jc Murrell Aug 2017

Species Specific Anaesthetics For Fish Anaesthesia And Euthanasia, Gd Readman, Sf Owen, Tg Knowles, Jc Murrell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

There is a need to ensure that the care and welfare for fish maintained in the laboratory are to the highest standards. This extends to the use of anaesthetics for both scientific study, humane killing and euthanasia at end of life. An anaesthetic should not induce negative behaviours and fish should not seek to avoid the anaesthetic. Surprisingly little information is available to facilitate a humane choice of anaesthetic agent for fish despite over 100 years of use and the millions of fish currently held in thousands of laboratories worldwide. Using a chemotaxic choice chamber we found different species specific …

Across The Indian Ocean: A Remarkable Example Of Trans-Oceanic Dispersal In An Austral Mygalomorph Spider, Sophie E. Harrison, Mark S. Harvey, Steve J.B. Cooper, Andrew D. Austin, Michael G. Rix

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

The Migidae are a family of austral trapdoor spiders known to show a highly restricted and disjunct distribution pattern. Here, we aim to investigate the phylogeny and historical biogeography of the group, which was previously thought to be vicariant in origin, and examine the biogeographic origins of the genus Moggridgea using a dated multi-gene phylogeny. Moggridgea specimens were sampled from southern Australia and Africa, and Bertmainus was sampled from Western Australia. Sanger sequencing methods were used to generate a robust six marker molecular dataset consisting of the nuclear genes 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, ITS rRNA, XPNPEP3 and H3 and the …

The Cul3 Ubiquitin Ligase: An Essential Regulator Of Diverse Cellular Processes, Brittney Marie Davidge Aug 2017

The Cul3 Ubiquitin Ligase: An Essential Regulator Of Diverse Cellular Processes, Brittney Marie Davidge

Dissertations and Theses

Cul3 forms E3 ubiquitin ligase complexes that regulate a variety of cellular processes. This dissertation describes Cul3's role in several of these pathways and provides new mechanistic details regarding the role of Cul3 in eukaryotic cells. Cyclin E is an example of a protein that is regulated in a Cul3-dependent manner. Cyclin E is a cell cycle regulator that controls the beginning of DNA replication in mammalian cells. Increased levels of cyclin E are found in some cancers, in addition, proteolytic removal of the cyclin E N-terminus occurs in some cancers and is associated with tumorigenesis. Cyclin E levels are …

Endothelial Function Is Associated With White Matter Microstructure And Executive Function In Older Adults, Nathan F. Johnson, Brian T. Gold, Christopher A. Brown, Emily F. Anggelis, Alison L. Bailey, Jody L. Clasey, David K. Powell

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

Age-related declines in endothelial function can lead to cognitive decline. However, little is known about the relationships between endothelial function and specific neurocognitive functions. This study explored the relationship between measures of endothelial function (reactive hyperemia index; RHI), white matter (WM) health (fractional anisotropy, FA, and WM hyperintensity volume, WMH), and executive function (Trail Making Test (TMT); Trail B - Trail A). Participants were 36 older adults between the ages of 59 and 69 (mean age = 63.89 years, SD = 2.94). WMH volume showed no relationship with RHI or executive function. However, there was a positive relationship between RHI …

Using Pre-Assessments To Make Decisions About Differentiation In A Detracked High School Biology Classroom, Michelina Macdonald

Journal of Practitioner Research

This article describes how one teacher used practitioner research to study the role that pre-assessment played when making decisions about student grouping and differentiated instruction within a detracked, honors biology classroom. Much detail is provided in this article describing the study design around a unit on protein synthesis and the steps taken in data analyses to contextualize this study within a practitioner research methodology. The teacher discusses her findings using a claim, evidence, and reasoning framework common in scientific inquiry to illustrate the effectiveness of using pre-assessment to group students for tiered instruction.

Telesemantics And The Believer, Taylor Hamrick Aug 2017

Telesemantics And The Believer, Taylor Hamrick

Episteme

The paper concerns itself with Low-Level teleosemantics, a naturalized theory of intentionality designed to indicate which biological devices and which description are most immediate (and least sophisticated) to how an organism’s (such as a frog) representational system properly functions. The author argues for how Karen Neander’s approach solves Fodor’s indeterminacy problem. The author thoroughly responds to the objection that the Low-Level theory cannot generalize up to more sophisticated mental contents, such as belief-desire human psychology. He introduces a few tools, strategies, and considerations that extend the Low-Level theory, making it possible to increase mental state complexity by moving from action-oriented …

Designing An Authentic Behavioral Research Experience In The Classroom Using Siamese Fighting Fish, Betta Splendens, Gianne Souza, Ronald M. Coleman Aug 2017

Designing An Authentic Behavioral Research Experience In The Classroom Using Siamese Fighting Fish, Betta Splendens, Gianne Souza, Ronald M. Coleman

STAR Program Research Presentations

Recently there have been major shifts in biology education towards emphasizing the teaching of the scientific process to more closely reflect actual scientific practices. Authentic research experiences require the development of many higher order cognitive skills. Creating an authentic research experience that appropriately scaffolds the development of these complex skills while engaging individual student motivation remains challenging in classroom settings. Some common challenges include limited time available for working with large numbers of students, cramped working areas, and limited funding and materials resources. Using the Siamese Fighting Fish, Betta splendens, we have created an economically viable authentic animal behavioral …

An Ethical Approach To Pharmaceutical Price Increase In The United States, Derek Mclaughlin Aug 2017

An Ethical Approach To Pharmaceutical Price Increase In The United States, Derek Mclaughlin

Lindmark Fellowship in Ethics

The question of the ethics of drug pricing is a fairly new topic. Discussion started publicly in March of 2005 when an article in “The Economist” raised questions about many of the practices that have been going in this industry for years, like overpricing drugs that are no better than their replacements, and taking that profit to further advertise the products direct-to-consumer. This discussion has led to a question many Americans ask today: Are these companies putting profits ahead of people?

What is legally permissible is not always an ethical business practice, especially in the instance of profiting from healthcare. …

Increased Expression Of The Tight Junction Protein Tjp1/Zo-1 Is Associated With Upregulation Of Taz-Tead Activity And An Adult Tissue Stem Cell Signature In Carfilzomib-Resistant Multiple Myeloma Cells And High-Risk Multiple Myeloma Patients, Irene Riz, Robert G. Hawley Aug 2017

Hawley

Anatomy and Regenerative Biology Faculty Publications

Tight junction protein 1 (TJP1) has recently been proposed as a biomarker to identify multiple myeloma (MM) patients most likely to respond to bortezomiband carfilzomib-based proteasome inhibitor regimens. Herein we report increased expression of TJP1 during the adaptive response mediating carfilzomib resistance in the LP-1/Cfz MM cell line. Moreover, increased TJP1 expression delineated a subset of relapsed/refractory MM patients on bortezomib-based therapy sharing an LP-1/Cfzlike phenotype characterized by activation of interacting transcriptional effectors of the Hippo signaling cascade (TAZ and TEAD1) and an adult tissue stem cell signature. siRNA-mediated knockdown of TJP1 or TAZ/TEAD1 partially sensitized LP-1/Cfz cells to carfilzomib. …

Animated Films And Linguistic Stereotypes: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Accent Use In Disney Animated Films, Telma O. Soares Aug 2017

Animated Films And Linguistic Stereotypes: A Critical Discourse Analysis Of Accent Use In Disney Animated Films, Telma O. Soares

Master’s Theses and Projects

Although cartoons are entertaining and worldwide appreciated, studies have demonstrated that they are not neutral, and are likely to convey messages about society linguistic ideologies. This study aims to find out if Disney animated films released in 2016 use accents to express the nature of the characters. A discourse analysis is conducted with two animated films produced by Disney Studios to examine the language choices concerning accent use. Results show that these films convey language ideologies in animated cartoons through the use of accents, and the portrayal of these accents can reproduce and sustain language-based stereotypes of the groups who …

Creating A Learning Community In The Sciences, Bart De Stasio, Beth De Stasio, Brian Piasecki Aug 2017

Creating A Learning Community In The Sciences, Bart De Stasio, Beth De Stasio, Brian Piasecki

Diversity Conference 2017

Science is a collaborative discipline that is best learned through discussion, experimentation and group activity. But several groups of students—particularly students of color, first generation college students and some international students— are often marginalized in our classrooms, labs and are left out of study groups. Their voices aren’t heard, their points of view and interpretations aren’t always appreciated and the learning of these students is thwarted. To address these issues, we have been involved in forming and designing two groups that have been functioning for the past two years: LEDS (Lawrentians Enhancing Diversity in the Sciences) and BioCore, a supplementary …

Ecological And Organic Life Safety Concerns Of Hfo-1234yf, Alberni V. Ruiz Aug 2017

Ecological And Organic Life Safety Concerns Of Hfo-1234yf, Alberni V. Ruiz

STAR Program Research Presentations

While at NOAA my research was directed by the inquiry of whether or not HFO-1234yf, a new compound being introduced into coolant system and replacing greenhouse gases HFC, is harmful to organic life. Using the computer program Matlab I was able to develop figures that represented the concentration of HFO-1234yf (HFO) in 12 different tower locations throughout the country. Comparing and contrasting concentrations of this HFO compound at each site led me to the question the possible harmful side effects this compound could bring to organic life due to the fact that concentration levels are increasing, with one factor being …

Development And Implementation Of An Optimization Model To Improve Airport Security., Kassandra Guajardo, Angela Waterworth, Robert Brigantic Ph.D.

STAR Program Research Presentations

What if airport security teams across the world could quantify and then minimize the amount of risk throughout areas of an airport? The Operations Research Team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is developing and implementing an optimization model called ARAM (Airport Risk Analysis Model) for the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. ARAM will provide a recommended optimal deployment of security assets to reduce risk in areas of an airport. The model is based on a risk equation that considers consequences, vulnerabilities, and threat magnitudes at airports. ARAM will also provide the estimated risk buy down percentage, which is how much risk …
