Launch Procedures For Offshore Flights, Audrey A. Vaughn, Matthew Lucas, Amanda J. Raiter

2017 Academic High Altitude Conference

The Linn-Benton Community College Space Exploration Team held two successful offshore high-altitude balloon launches from the deck of the research vessel Pacific Storm. The payload filmed the umbra casted by the total eclipse as it passed across the Oregon coastline on August 21, 2017. Assigning roles and having a set procedure made the launch process operate more efficiently. Approximately ten onshore launches were conducted to rehearse procedures in preparation for the launch. During these launches, members became more familiar with their roles and the roles of others on the team to prepare for any and all situations that may occur. …

These include three species of Belostomatidae, 48 species of Corixidae, one species of Naucoridae, four species of Nepidae, nine species of Notonectidae, and one species of Pleidae. The riparian Gelastocoris oculatus was also found. Species keys for adults are provided along with notes on identification, habitat, biology, distribution, and abundance. Most species reached peak abundance in late summer and autumn and overwintered as adults, but seven species apparently overwintered as eggs. Most lentic species flew to streams or larger len tic habitats to overwinter. …

Flowers Associations And Mating Behavior Or Its Absence At Blossoms By Spilomyia Spp. (Diptera, Syrphidae), G. P. Waldbauer, Arthur W. Ghent Oct 2017

Flowers Associations And Mating Behavior Or Its Absence At Blossoms By Spilomyia Spp. (Diptera, Syrphidae), G. P. Waldbauer, Arthur W. Ghent

The Great Lakes Entomologist

(excerpt)

Syrphid flies of many species visit blossoms to obtain nectar and pollen (see Waldbauer 1983 for referencesl. Many of these syrphids, in common with other insects (Parker 1978), also find mates at the blossoms. Males of these syrphid species make aerial patrols of inflorescences frequented by females, alternating these patrols with sitting on foliage. l11ey pounce on or chase insects of various species and swiftly initiate copulation with can specific females (Collet and Land 1975; Maier 1978; Maier and Waldbauer 1 979a,b).

A Maple Wood Wasp, Xiphydria Maculata, And Its Insect Enemies (Hymenoptera: Xiphydriiade), Mark A. Deyrup

The Great Lakes Entomologist

A xiphydriid wood wasp, Xiphydria mandata, is very common in branches ofAeer spp. in Indiana. and is frequently the proximate cause of branches falling from shade trees. X. maculata is attacked by seven parasitoids: Alliaells bllrquei (Aulacidae), A. digitalis, Rhyssella nitida (Ichneumonidae), Xiphydriophagus meyerinckii (Pteromalidae), Coeloides rossicus betulae (Braconidae), Spathills elegans (Braconidae), and Orussus sp. (Orussidae). The latter three parasitoids prior to this study had no confirmed hosts; Xiphydriophagus is new to N. America. This parasitoid complex is compared with that of the Palaearctic Xiphydria camelus, showing a series of pairs of closely related Palaearctic and Nearctic forms.

Effect Of A Hay Mulch And Of A Companionate Planting On Cabbage Pest Populations, W. S. Cranshaw Oct 2017

Effect Of A Hay Mulch And Of A Companionate Planting On Cabbage Pest Populations, W. S. Cranshaw

The Great Lakes Entomologist

Cabbage crop environments were modified by either use of a hay mulch or intercrop- ping with "companionate" plants (nasturtium, thyme, and rosemary). A temporary reduction in egg and larval numbers of imported cabbageworm (Artogeia rapae L.) occurred on mulched plots. This effect disappeared later in the season as the plants grew large and coyered the mulch. On some interplanted plots, temporary increases in cabbage looper (Trichoplusia ni Hubner) larvae and decreases in imported cabbageworm eggs were noted. Hov.'Cver. on most dates, there was no effect of interplanting on pest populations. The general lack of effects on cabbage insect pests …

Head In The Clouds: Will A Next-Generation Library Management System Bring Clear Vision?, Denise M. Branch Oct 2017

Head In The Clouds: Will A Next-Generation Library Management System Bring Clear Vision?, Denise M. Branch

Charleston Library Conference

Multiple systems, disconnected workflows, and siloed information have plagued libraries for years. Librarians are tired of wrestling with inefficiencies and are seeking ways to unify their environment. Fortunately, they have discovered an effective tool to combat inefficiencies. Next generation library management systems are a new technology that brings many benefits. With these cloud-based systems a network of remote servers are hosted on the Internet that store, manage and process data rather than on a local server. They can transform the way services are delivered bringing streamlined workflows and enabling increased visibility and accessibility of all resources to the user community. …

Wrangle Your Data Like A Pro With The Data Processing Power Of Python, Geoffrey P. Timms, Jeremy M. Brown Oct 2017

Wrangle Your Data Like A Pro With The Data Processing Power Of Python, Geoffrey P. Timms, Jeremy M. Brown

Charleston Library Conference

Management, delivery, and marketing of library resources and collections necessitate interaction with a plethora of data from many sources and in many forms. Accessing and transforming data into meaningful information or different formats used in library automation can be time consuming, but a working knowledge of a programming language can improve efficiency in many facets of librarianship. From processing lists to creating extensible markup language (XML), from editing machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records before upload to automating statistical reports, the Python programming language and third-party application programming interfaces (APIs) can be used to accomplish both behind-the-scenes tasks and end-user facing projects. …

Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland Oct 2017

Social Scholarship? Academic Communications In The Digital Age, Steven Weiland

Charleston Library Conference

A recent sign of the technological transformation of scholarship is the consolidation of views about the emergence of the “digital scholar,” a variation on the influential reform minded account of faculty work associated with Ernest Boyer’s Scholarship Reconsidered (1990). An essential feature of this new form of academic practice and identity is named “social scholarship,” or participation in scholarly communications via the growing variety of digital networks for professional interaction. Scholars and librarians can recognize the change while acknowledging the durability of academic workflow conventions. Libraries can guide the faculty in social scholarship and be gadflies in matters of the …

From The Concept To Results: A Case Study On The Collection Development For The Odc–Opening Day Collection At Qatar National Library, Henry Owino, Katarzyna Helena Dudek

Charleston Library Conference

"A library collection should fit the mission for which it is created. The number of books it holds does not determine its worth." (E. J. Loveland, 2000)

If so, how do we create a national library, and how do we build its collection from scratch without making many mistakes? Since 2012, when the plans for the new national library were announced, Qatar National Library (QNL) envisioned as carrying out its mission to "spread knowledge, nurture imagination, cultivate creativity, and preserve the nation’s heritage for future generations” through three functions: National library, university and research library, and a metropolitan public library. …

Dda Management With Predictive Modeling, John Vickery Oct 2017

Dda Management With Predictive Modeling, John Vickery

Charleston Library Conference

Demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) programs have become an integral part of academic libraries’ collecting strategies. While DDA programs provide an effective way to build a just-in-time collection, it can be difficult to anticipate how many titles will be triggered for purchase and what the financial impact will be. This presentation will describe a project to build a predictive model to flag DDA titles that are likely to be triggered for purchase within the first year of being added to the catalog. By implementing a predictive model, collections and acquisitions departments can better plan the yearly DDA budget. In addition, titles with …

Institutional Outcomes Following Total Pancreatectomy With Islet Autotransplantation In Children, Stephen Sekoulopoulos, Jaimie Nathan

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

A retrospective review of TPIAT patients at a free-standing children’s hospital from April 2015 to April 2017 was performed to determine preoperative pancreatitis course and perioperative outcomes of TPIAT. Total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) is used to treat debilitating chronic pancreatitis (CP) and acute recurrent pancreatitis (ARP) that has failed medical and endoscopic therapy. Chronic pancreatitis is a progressive fibroinflammatory injury that can result in endocrine and/or exocrine insufficiency, as well as in severe pain and impaired quality of life. The fibrotic pancreas is removed while the insulin-producing islets are isolated and transplanted back into the patient, usually into …

One-Year Mortality In Patients With Community-Acquired Pneumonia, Paula Peyrani, Julio A. Ramirez Oct 2017

One-Year Mortality In Patients With Community-Acquired Pneumonia, Paula Peyrani, Julio A. Ramirez

The University of Louisville Journal of Respiratory Infections

Pneumonia remains a common cause of morbidity and mortality in the US. Although, communityacquired pneumonia (CAP) has traditionally been considered an acute process, more recently, data have emerged showing that patients surviving an episode of CAP are at increased risk of death long after hospital discharged. In this descriptive review, we examine the current knowledge of long-term mortality and propose a hypothesis explaining the pathogenesis of long-term mortality in patients with CAP.

Buecher, Ernest W. Valdez, Andrea Porras-Alfaro, Jesse M. Young, Kaitlyn J.H. Read, Diana E. Northup

KIP Articles

Microorganisms that reside on and in mammals, such as bats, have the potential to influence their host’s health and to provide defenses against invading pathogens. However, we have little understanding of the skin and fur bacterial microbiota on bats, or factors that influence the structure of these communities. The southwestern United States offers excellent sites for the study of external bat bacterial microbiota due to the diversity of bat species, the variety of abiotic and biotic factors that may govern bat bacterial microbiota communities, and the lack of the newly emergent fungal disease in bats, white-nose syndrome (WNS), in the …
