Cyclic Peptide Conjugate Of Curcumin And Doxorubicin As An Anticancer Agent, Shaban Darwish, Saghar Mozaffari, Keykavous Parang, Rakesh Tiwari
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
The hydrophobicity of curcumin creates hurdle towards its use in the anticancer therapy. Herein, we synthesized a curcumin-doxorubicin conjugated cyclic peptide scaffold to improve the solubility of curcumin and create a conjugate containing two anticancer agents. A solid-phase Fmoc/tBu solid phase methodology was used to synthesize a cell-penetrating nuclear targeting peptide with free thiol and amine groups, which was coupled with the activated doxorubicin (Dox) and curcumin, affording Dox-peptide-curcumin conjugate (DPCC) (10). The antiproliferative activity of the conjugate was evaluated in human leukemia carcinoma cell (CCRF-CEM), human ovarian carcinoma cell (SKOV-3), and normal kidney cell line (LLCPK). Cyclic peptide-doxorubicin conjugate …

Exploring Gender In First-Year Composition, Ross Alan Bradley
Exploring Gender In First-Year Composition, Ross Alan Bradley
Theses and Dissertations
Recently scholars in Creative Writing have begun researching gender and how gender relates to student success composition classes. This thesis uses critical discourse analysis and linguistic markers associated with different genders to examine student interaction with emphasis on gender domination and power inequalities between students of different genders. Data was collected from both face-to-face and online first-year composition classes. The first chapter gives a brief overview of relevant literature and outlines the other chapters, the second chapter describes literature that was researched for the study, and the third chapter lays critical discourse analysis, which was used to analyze the data. …

During long-distance fall migrations, nocturnally migrating Swainson’s Thrushes often stop on the northern Gulf of Mexico coast before flying across the Gulf. To minimize energetic costs, trans-Gulf migrants should stop over when they encounter crosswinds or headwinds, and depart with supportive tailwinds. However, time constrained migrants should be less selective, balancing costs of headwinds with benefits of continuing their migrations. To test the hypotheses that birds select supportive winds and that selectivity is mediated by seasonal time constraints, we examined whether local winds affected Swainson’s Thrushes’ arrival and departure at Ft. Morgan, Alabama, USA at annual, seasonal, and nightly time …
Introducing Virtual Representation, Thomas Simmons
Introducing Virtual Representation, Thomas Simmons
Faculty Publications
The general rule that a person cannot be bound by an agreement or decree unless she received notice encounters practical difficulties where a person is missing, incompetent, a minor, unascertained, or even unborn. All beneficiaries are necessary parties in a trust proceeding. But short of appointing a guardian ad litem to represent persons who are difficult to notice, uncertainty and inefficiencies would be encountered were it not for the doctrine of virtual representation. Under the doctrine of virtual representation, persons - even if not yet in existence - can be held to be parties to a proceeding or an agreement …
New Synthetic Reactions Towards Global Chlorination And Enamides Functionalization, Mirza Ardella Saputra
New Synthetic Reactions Towards Global Chlorination And Enamides Functionalization, Mirza Ardella Saputra
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on two main projects, global chlorination and enamide functionalization, which both encompass in cationic intermediates. Inspired by the desires to find a new chlorination method, global chlorination project is emphasized in chapter one and chapter two, in which chapter one details various known chlorine-containing natural products, including alkyl chlorides and vinyl chlorides. This chapter also describes the previously known protocols to synthesize alkyl chlorides in the attempts of chlorosulfolipids total syntheses, as well as several known reactions to synthesize vinyl chlorides that are both important functional groups in organic synthesis. Chapter two depicts our novel synthetic reaction …

Reproductive Strategies Matter For Rare Plant Conservation: Pollination, Phenology, And Mating In An Endemic Plant Of The Sky Islands Of Arizona, Erigeron Lemmonii A. Gray (Lemmon's Fleabane) (Asteraceae), Pamela Bailey, Peter Kevan
Western North American Naturalist
Erigeron lemmonii A. Gray is extremely rare, but not endangered. There are fewer than 1000 individuals, but they compose an apparently stable, heterozygotic, diploid (2n = 18) population. The plants are perennial and endemic to one small location (about 0.5 km2) in Scheelite Canyon, Huachuca Mountains (Cochise County), Fort Huachuca Army Base, part of the Sky Island region, Arizona. Erigeron lemmonii grows from crevices in cliffs, ledges, and rock faces where it can form mats by spreading vegetatively from the roots as they proliferate, especially in microsites where soil accumulates. Our goals were to (1) investigate floral anatomy for reproductive …

Elderly Women’S Experience Of The Role Of Hydrotherapy In Health: Content Analysis, Parand Pourghane
The Qualitative Report
Living to an old age is considered by many elderly women to bring about a decreased quality of life. Hydrotherapy allows individuals to engage in certain physical activities that cannot be done outside the water. The purpose of this study was to explore elderly women’s experience of the role of hydrotherapy in their health and was conducted in selected pools of Guilan province in Iran in 2015-2016. Twenty-three elderly women were selected using a purposeful sampling strategy. The data was gathered through semi-structured interviews; Researchers used a qualitative design, based on a content analysis approach. Analysis results were identified as …

Spatial-Temporal Dynamics Of Neotropical Velvet Ant (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae) Communities Along A Forest-Savanna Gradient, Júlio Miguel Alvarenga, Cecília Rodrigues Vieira, Leandro Braga Godinho, Pedro Henrique Campelo, James P. Pitts, Guarino Rinaldi Colli
Biology Faculty Publications
Understanding how and why biological communities are organized over space and time is a major challenge and can aid biodiversity conservation in times of global changes. Herein, spatial-temporal variation in the structure of velvet ant communities was examined along a forest-savanna gradient in the Brazilian Cerrado to assess the roles of environmental filters and interspecific interactions upon community assembly. Velvet ants were sampled using 25 arrays of Y-shaped pitfall traps with drift fences for one year along an environmental gradient from cerrado sensu stricto (open canopy, warmer, drier) to cerradão (closed canopy, cooler, moister). Dataloggers installed on each trap recorded …
Predicting Student Success: A Logistic Regression Analysis Of Data From Multiple Siu-C Courses, Patrick Soule
Predicting Student Success: A Logistic Regression Analysis Of Data From Multiple Siu-C Courses, Patrick Soule
Research Papers
The objective of this report is to improve prediction techniques regarding the future performance of students in select university courses through the utilization of multiple logistic regressions. This is achieved with the aid of statistical computing software which applies forward step-wise variable selection methods that identify influential variables sufficient to accurately predict student success. Once a logit model is constructed with the required parameters and predictors, the inverse logit function outputs a probability of student success. In all cases, logistic prediction models matched or exceeded the performance of current prediction methods while using an equal or lesser number of explanatory …

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers
Hyperoxia-induced acute lung injury (HALI) is a key contributor to the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in neonates, for which no specific preventive or therapeutic agent is available. Here we show that lung micro-RNA (miR)-34a levels are significantly increased in lungs of neonatal mice exposed to hyperoxia. Deletion or inhibition of miR-34a improves the pulmonary phenotype and BPD-associated pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in BPD mouse models, which, conversely, is worsened by miR-34a overexpression. Administration of angiopoietin-1, which is one of the downstream targets of miR34a, is able to ameliorate the BPD pulmonary and PAH phenotypes. Using three independent cohorts of …
