Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways and the mechanisms are not fully understood. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a heterogeneous group of monocytes, granulocyte and myeloid cells at early stage of differentiation. They possess phenotypic plasticity and regulate airway inflammation. We recently reported that Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) regulates MDSC differentiation into fibrocytes, emerging effectors in chronic inflammation. However, the role of KLF4 in asthma is not known. Thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) is an epithelial cell-derived cytokine and a key initiator of allergic airway inflammation. Given the fact that TSLP promotes Th2 cytokine production that increases MDSC …

Heat, Acid And Osmotic Stress Tolerance Of Leuconostoc Mesenteroides As Influenced By Prior Exposure To Various Mild Stress Conditions, Ingrid C. Osorio Rodriguez
LSU Master's Theses
The importance of Leuconostoc mesenteroides is recognized for its contribution to taste in cultured dairy products. It has been cited for its potential role as a probiotic. Consumer demand exists for new dairy products with health benefits. In the manufacture of probiotic-products survival of Leuconostoc mesenteroides would depend on its ability to tolerate challenging processing and storage conditions. Improved viability by prior exposure to mild stresses can increase stress tolerance toward a more severe stress. Furthermore, it can result in cross-protection due to connection of several proteins in response to stresses. Objective was to evaluate the effect of prior …

Fishing is the prime source of the livelihood for the population living in the coastal areas of Pakistan and a major sector of exportation. In the year 2015-16, the fish product exports in foreign exchange recorded 325 US Million Dollars. This sector provides direct employment to an estimate 400,000 fishers and 600,000 peoples in related industries. Despite the importance of fisheries for Pakistan, the supervision of the activity seems defective particularly in relation to safety at sea. The fleet is made of traditional small size wooden boat which often are below regulatory thresholds. In addition, fishers are not properly trained …

Some preparation techniques, either conventional or advanced, have been provided. Advanced technique may overcome the limitations of conventional techniques. Recently, not all fertility clinics in Indonesia are able to provide advanced preparation techniques. Some techniques require expensive equipments and can only be used for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). Some fertility clinics use a modified procedure, namely the combination of density gradient centrifugation with a swim-up method for the preparation of the sperm to be used in ART. This study aimed to determine whether the modified density gradient centrifugation, which is density gradient centrifugation followed by a swim-up, is able to …

Most college students sit 14 hours per week on average, excluding sedentary study time. Researchers observing workplace and elementary school settings with active workstations to combat sedentary behavior have shown enhanced cognition without distraction. Until now, incorporating active workstations in college classroom settings remained relatively unexplored. This study’s purpose was to assess academic performance using in-class stationary cycle desks during a semester-long lecture course. Twenty-one college students (19–24 years) enrolled in a lecture course volunteered and were split into traditional sit (SIT) and stationary cycle (CYC) groups randomly, matched on a calculated factor equal to a physical activity (PA) score …

A Study Of The Biology Of Rhopalosiphum Padi (Homoptera: Aphididae) In Winter Wheat In Northwestern Indiana, J. E. Araya, J. E. Foster, S. E. Cambron
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Periodic collections of the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, during two years revealed small populations on winter wheat in Lafayette, Indiana. The greatest numbers were found on volunteer wheat plants before planting. In the autumn, aphids were detected on one-shoot plants by mid-October and also early March. The populations remained small until mid-June. We conclude that the aphid feeding did not significantly affect the plants, but helped spread barley yellow dwarf virus.

Appearance Of Damage Symptoms And Reinfestation Rates For Christmas Trees Attacked By The Zimmerman Pine Moth, Dioryctria Zimmermani (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), James W. Yonker, Donald L. Schuder
The Great Lakes Entomologist
Two blocks of Scotch pine Christmas trees were inspected to determine an appropriate time to evaluate Zimmerman pine moth damage, and to determine reinfestation rates for trees previously attacked by this insect. Results showed that damage evaluation should be delayed until mid-August and possibly later, in early fall. Evaluation done before this time could result in underestimation of total damage. In the reinfestation study, previously attacked trees were shown to sustain both a higher rate of reattack and more attacks per tree the following year than control trees. However, at most, only 61 % of the new attacks the following …
